COVID f—ed us, bro…. Three, four years later, and y’all motherf—ers still care to come to this sh–. It truly means so f—ing much to me and the team…. To know that this random idea I had, that it brings the spirit of L.A. up for two days, I say this with every bone in my body: Thank you all!”

Gracie Abrams Explains How Exactly Taylor Swift’s Kitchen Fire Broke Out

Gracie Abrams and Taylor Swift made fire when they teamed up for their new collaboration, “Us” — literally.

Abrams sat down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to discuss how the songwriting session for her The Secret of Us track led to Swift putting out a fire in her apartment after an all-nighter. “It’s dramatic. We almost burned her house down. Literally. […] We went to dinner and we drank a lot of alcohol and we were talking about our lives, and then we were talking about our albums, and she was in the middle of Tortured Poets and I was in the middle of [The Secret of Us],” the 24-year-old singer recalled. “We were just getting so excited talking about all of it. And she was like, we have to go back to the house and I want to play you the songs and blah, blah, blah. So we went back to her house and we opened a bottle of wine and we went song for song in the kitchen, and we were being like theatre kids, standing and running around the center island. It was so funny. The whole time I was like, ‘This is ridiculous. This is crazy.’”

She continued, “At this point, it’s like two in the morning and we, off the back of playing song for song for song for song, for I don’t know how long, we were listening through sketches that Aaron [Desnner] had sent us and the guitar part for “Us” came on, and immediately we ran to the piano, and we had no plan to make any [song], but it felt just like a Nashville writing session. We sat at the piano, just found the key, and then wrote the whole song from two to six AM. We filmed the whole thing, not because we were like, ‘We need to film this,’ but we just needed to get it all down, whatever. It was so full body, it was dramatic but it was so much fun.”

Of the fire, Abrams recalled that she heard a “crack” from the other room, which Swift thought was her cat. “We finished the bridge and we went into the kitchen to get probably wine, and there was a bonfire on her center island. Truly a huge ball of flame. There had been a candle that we had lit when we got home, and it was so hot that it burst. And the base of the candle was this wooden, like a tree trunk kind of a thing,” she shared. “I don’t know how she knew where this was, but she runs and grabs a fire extinguisher and for minutes is trying to get it to work and it won’t work. And I was just like, I’m crying, but I had had a similar problem earlier. I had weirdly had a candle burst and I learned that if you put water on it because wax, oil and water…. Anyways, eventually she put it out. Extinguished it.”

She continued, “We both had crazy chest coughs for weeks after because the whole kitchen was covered in smoke. ‘Us’ came from that night. That was a really good night. No one got hurt. We actually both got burned from the wax and all that stuff. It was gnarly, but it was funny.”

Last week, Abrams took to Instagram to share a video of the duo playfully creating the song, calling the evening “some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.” She also included a video of Swift extinguishing an apartment fire. “Now we know how to use a fire extinguisher. I love you,” Abrams wrote.

The 24-year-old Abrams spent the summer opening for Swift’s The Eras Tour, a role she’ll reprise on select dates in North America later this fall. She’ll head out on her very own headlining tour of theater-sized venues across the United States, starting Sept. 5 in Portland.

The Secret of Us features the previously-released tracks “Risk” and “Close to You,” which debuted at No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it’s the followup to Abrams’ debut record Good Riddance, which arrived February 2023, peaking at No. 52 on the Billboard 200.

Corey Feldman Invokes ‘The Goonies’ & Michael Jackson in Fred Durst-Directed ‘The Joke’ Video

It’s a circus out there! Corey Feldman has dropped a colorful ’80s inspired music video for his latest single, “The Joke,” and Billboard is premiering the visual directed by Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst.

“‘The Joke’ is more than just a song — it’s a statement. For years, I’ve faced criticism from those who want to undermine my dedication to music. This single is my way of reclaiming the narrative and showing that my commitment to my art is unshakeable,” Feldman tells Billboard. “Fred and I have a long history of working together. We originally recorded ‘Seamless’ as a feature in 2016 on my Angelic 2 The Core album, which will be re-released digitally on July 4th weekend. We co-wrote and co-produced that song, but working with Fred Durst as a director on the music video has been an incredible experience. He had a clear concept in mind and I relinquished the creative to him, and although it wasn’t how I saw it, his version surprised me and delivers the laughs. I can’t wait for my fans to see the energy and vision we’ve brought to life”

The video kicks off with actor-singer on stage bouncing around to circus music, his dancers and band behind him, everyone dressed in the decade’s brightest duds. The tune then takes a creepy turn as Feldman laughs like a maniac before the band — complete with headbands and hair inspired by the likes of Robert Smith and Alice Cooper — begins to jam.

The video slows down during the bridge, when The Lost Boys actor rips open his multicolored tracksuit’s jacket to reveal the Goonies T-shirt underneath, paying homage to the 1985 Steven Spielberg-directed classic in which he starred as he sings, “Maybe there are times, I second guess myself/ The pain outweighs the wealth?/ Maybe it is time, to crawl back in my shell, contemplate farewell?/ Well …”

A familiar “hee hee!” is heard as the former child star covers his eyes, then re-emerges dressed as his late friend Michael Jackson. “Let’s give ’em hell!” Feldman sings as he busts out some moves by the King of Pop.

The Limp Bizkit frontman makes a cameo at the end, clapping as the video ends and Feldman — still dressed as Jackson — joins him on the set. “Fantastic!” the rocker praises, but the actor has a few concerns about the video they just filmed.

“Listen, I love that you’re directing this. I think it’s gonna be amazing; everything looks great,” Feldman starts before gesturing to his sequined Michael Jackson outfit. “I really don’t know about this whole thing, though.”

The rocker assuages his fears by saying, “Brother, look at me. It’s not going in the video.” Guess “The Joke” is on Feldman!

Ahead of the video’s premiere on Billboard.com, the singer-actor performed the song on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast and talked to the host about his music and influences. “I grew up studying from Michael. I learned from Michael,” he shared. “So a lot of the stuff I design musically … has gotta have that same kind of drive, it’s gotta have that thing that makes me dance, that makes me want to move so that it comes alive when I perform it.”

Watch the music video for “The Joke” above, and check out Corey Feldman when he joins Limp Bizkit on the Loserville tour, which kicks off July 16 in Somerset, Wis.

A$AP Rocky Drops the Release Date for New Album ‘Don’t Be Dumb’

A$AP Rocky is finally ready to drop his first album in six years.

The Harlem rapper made his Paris Fashion Week debut on Friday (June 21) with his first AWGE collection entitled American Sabotage, and played three unreleased tracks during the collection’s show. Once the presentation concluded, a pre-save link went live revealing the album’s title — Don’t Be Dumb — and an August 30 release date.

Flacko wore some items from the collection during his Rolling Loud performance in 2023. He also played unreleased songs during his set with one song then-titled “Taylor Swift” causing a bit of controversy due to lyrics allegedly aimed at Travis Scott. “First you stole my flow/ So I stole your b—h/ Then you stole my style/ I need at least 10 percent/ All due disrespect, I hope you take offense,” Rocky rapped. The two have been going back and forth dating back to around 2015, when Scott was dating Rihanna and was accused by A$AP Nast for “stealing [A$AP Mob’s] swag.”

In an interview with Dazed last year, Rocky said this album “feels like [his] best work yet.” However, he didn’t go into much detail, telling the outlet, “I want to leave expectations wide and open. I don’t want to tell you what to expect. I just want people to experience it how they do naturally.”

Rocky has already released two singles, dropping “Same Problems” and “Riot (Rowdy Pipe’n)” in 2023. There’s no word on whether or not they’ll make the final cut for the album.

Adding to his fashion resume, the rapper and father of two recently starred in Bottega Veneta’s Father’s Day campaign with his sons RZA and Riot. Rocky became a brand ambassador for the Italian fashion house in 2022.

Tom Petty Documentary Stole Filmmaker’s Footage of Rock Legend, Lawsuit Claims

A filmmaker is suing Warner Music over the 2021 Tom Petty documentary Somewhere You Feel Free, calling the movie a “brazen exploitation” that used nearly an hour of his copyrighted film footage without permission.

In a lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles federal court, Martyn Atkins says he never gave the Somewhere producers consent to use hours of footage he filmed of the music legend during the 1990s but that the movie nonetheless contained “a shocking 45 minutes” of his materials.

“Atkins did not provide consent, did not otherwise license any of the footage, and was not compensated in any manner for the Film’s unauthorized, brazen exploitation of the works Atkins created and owns,” his attorneys wrote in a June 18 complaint.

Trending on Billboard

Released in March 2021, Somewhere You Feel Free promised viewers “never-before-seen footage” of Petty as he worked on his 1994 album Wildflowers. Much of the footage was filmed by Atkins, who served as art director for the album and says he often documented the proceedings with a 16mm camera. Later, Atkins says he and the music legend watched the footage and discussed eventually using it to create such a documentary.

But after Petty’s tragic death in 2017, the project didn’t come together until 2020, when Atkins says he was invited to a meeting with Petty’s daughter and other reps from his estate. After they promised him the job of directing the upcoming documentary, Atkins says, he provided them with a detailed breakdown of where he had stored the original footage at Warner Music’s storage facility.

But after that first encounter, he says he was “never asked to another meeting.”

“Atkins had been conned into believing he would produce and direct the film so that Atkins would reveal the location of his footage to defendants,” his lawyers write. “He was then cut out completely — in every imaginable respect. He was not even told as a courtesy that his works would be misappropriated and featured, let alone asked his consent.”

When he saw the movie, Atkins says he says he was shocked at what he saw: Roughly half of the movie’s 90-minute runtime was composed of his footage, including some of the “most compelling and iconic shots of Petty” in the movie. “Atkins simply could not believe it.”

A likely defense argument from Warner Music is that Atkins produced the footage as a so-called work-for-hire — a legal term meaning he created it at the request of someone else. If true, that would mean that even though Atkins filmed the footage, the rights to it were retained by Petty or the label. After all, he was the art director on Petty’s album and stored the film in Warner’s facilities.

But in his lawsuit, Atkins specifically aimed to preempt that argument: “The footage Atkins shot … was not subject to a work-for-hire or other such agreement. Atkins did not license the footage to Petty, Warner Records, any Warner Records affiliate, or anybody else. He was not acting as an employee of Petty or Warner Records, or any other party [and]  here is no agreement in existence relating to any of the film footage.”

Beyond simply using the footage, the lawsuit claims that Somewhere‘s producers have “repeatedly misrepresented” that the footage was “magically and unexpectedly discovered” before the documentary was shot. “The film’s producers have systematically implemented this false narrative to manipulate the viewing public and bolster the marketing of the film,” the complaint reads.

In technical terms, the lawsuit names Warner Music unit WMG Productions LLC, as well as the film’s production company, Girl On LSD LLC. The lawsuit includes counts of direct and secondary copyright infringement and a claim that the defendants effectively stole his property.

IDK & Gunna, “TIFFANY”

A viral snippet that goes on to live up to the hype is a rarity nowadays, but IDK and Gunna defied the odds with “TIFFANY,” their first-ever team-up. Gunna is a guest on the DMV native’s single but feels right at home with his close friend Turbo helming the twitchy production. The chemistry is apparent, as they join forces for a silky chorus name-dropping the designer brands filling their wardrobes. With a luxe visual shot in Paris, it’s fitting the track dropped in the midst of Paris Fashion Week. IDK lets it be known he’s been grinding for a decade to get to this point, and refers to himself as reliable children’s cartoon character Bob the Builder. “TIFFANY” follows IDK’s Joey Bada$$-assisted “Denim,” and he’s drummed up some momentum heading into his album later this year.

Adrian Marcel, “Lovin Me”

Rising R&B singer Adrian Marcel offers up a delectable slice of warm, inviting R&B vibes on his new single, “Lovin Me.” With his soulful falsetto and pristine layering coloring the drum-heavy jazz-inflected soundscape of Bay Area R&B, Marcel crafts a track that grapples with the lingering feelings of apprehension that remain in even the longest of relationships. “Through all your sacrifice, you stood by my side/ But still, I can’t help wondering/ If you’re still in love with me,” he ponders over the Sonny B-produced track, co-written with Ryn Nicole. Playing on the doe-eyed balminess of classic soul and R&B, “Lovin Me” is a sweet addition to the soundtrack for a hazy summer evening.

2Rare, “Congratulationz”

2Rare has a lot to be thankful about these days. He’s sharing the love and the timing is perfect for his “Congratulationz” single, which serves as a celebratory anthem for every graduating class across the country. The triumphant tune is a refreshing change of pace compared to previous releases for the Philly native, as he toasts to leveling up in life and thanks his parents and God for being there every step of the way. “Give it up for us one time,” he urges listeners, with help from a children’s choir to further drive home the familial aspect. It’s not going to reach the heights of Quavo and Post Malone’s diamond single of the same name, but 2Rare’s positivity is a welcome sound.

THEY., “Diamonds And Pearls”

“Be my addiction, material girl/ Wrapped ’round my finger like diamonds and pearls/ Hit all your buttons with no strings attached/ Make you wanna run it back,” Drew Love sings at the beginning of “Diamond And Pearls,” a Prince-nodding, City High name-checking ode to the sensuous heat of the chase. After previewing the song last year, the acclaimed R&B duo presents a full song that leans into its hip hop-soul and neo-soul influences, while employing a sing-rap cadence in the verses that feels decidedly contemporary. Embracing all aspects of the chase — sex, liquor, material wealth — “Diamonds And Pearls” is the kind of infectious R&B jam that makes even the slimiest concepts feel alluring.

Bay Swag, “Worldwide Sniper”

It’s a Slizzy Summer in NYC, and Bay Swag, alongside his “Fisherrr” collaborator Cash Cobain, are the driving forces behind the sexy drill movement sweeping the Big Apple rap scene. The Queens native gives his rendition of DMX’s “What These B—–s Want” anthem, as Bay runs through various women in his lineup, like an H-Town fling who used to date NBA star James Harden or a nurse from Brooklyn that he passed to Fivio Foreign. With Cash helming the ominous production, the 24-year-old is crossing state lines to live up to his “Worldwide Sniper” reputation. If you let Bay Swag tell it, he says the track is “a shout-out to all the baddies worldwide who bring that energy wherever they go.”

The 80s & Snoh Aalegra, “Blue”

Last Friday (June 21), The 80s — comprised of James Fauntleroy & No I.D. and formerly known as Cocaine 80s — released the 2024 remaster of their Pursuit EP, the first in a series of defining Blog Era projects. With three-time Grammy nominee Snoh Aalegra offering her first musical release of 2024 via a new verse on “Blue,” the moody album closer emerges as one of the set’s most rewarding listens. Her ethereal tone blends beautifully with Fauntleroy’s tender falsetto — grounded by endless layers of backing harmonies — making for the perfect vocal complement to the dramatic piano line that anchors No I.D.’s sparse production. “And all I ever wanted was your love/ Damn, I would pull the sun down/ Just because you’re all I wanted,” they coo.

Zach Bryan Is Previewing Songs From His New Album at Bars Across the U.S.

Zach Bryan is set to release his upcoming studio album, The Great American Bar Scene, on July 4 via Warner Records. The 18-track project will include 17 songs and a poem, highlighted by the preview releases of “Pink Skies” and “Purple Gas.”

A double vinyl version of The Great American Bar Scene is also slated to be released on Oct. 10. In addition to prepping new music, Bryan has been headlining his Quittin’ Time tour, which welcomes a slate of openers including Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Turnpike Troubadours and The War & Treaty.

The album will be released as Bryan still has several entries on the Billboard 200, chart, including two projects in the chart’s top 20: his 2023 self-titled album is at No. 12 and his 2022 project American Heartbreak is at No. 15. Lower on the Billboard 200 are his previous projects, 2020’s Elisabeth, 2022’s Summertime Blues and 2023’s Boys of Faith.

The Influence of Tina Turner, Little Richard & More on Rock n’ Roll | Billboard News

Tina Turner, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Little Richard and various other Black artists paved the way in rock n’ roll before turning into a predominantly white genre in the ’80s. Keep watching to see how these artists influenced the art of rock n’ roll!

Tetris Kelly:
Most of the rock music you listen to today would not exist if not for Black innovators paving the way. During this Black Music Month, we’re taking a look back at some of the trailblazing artists that made rock n’ roll what it is.

Rock was born in the 1950s at a time when the United States was just as segregated as music genres. People look back to Elvis, whose sound was not a white sound, he was compared to African American R&B singers and covered countless African American musicians.

Little Richard has been described as the architect of rock n’ roll for his dynamic music and electrifying stage presence in the mid ’50s music scene. Ike and Tina Turner opened for The Rolling Stones in the late 1960s, which introduced their bold style of soul-infused rock.

And Sister Rosetta Tharpe has been credited as the godmother of rock n’ roll. A Black, queer woman in the ’40s, she forged her sound in an industry dominated by men, and she wielded a guitar on a level that rivaled them. But by the ’80s, rock n’ roll had now become white music, with most general knowledge of rock history not going back further than the ’70s.

Rumors are that it may be the third act and a genre Beyonce is looking to reclaim.

Kygo Meets Terminally Ill Dog Also Named Kygo at Palm Tree Music Fest: See the Photos & Video

Earlier this month, the story of a terminally ill dog named Kygo went viral, with the dog’s owner stating that it would be a dream come true for the pup to meet his namesake, Kygo the Norwegian electronic music producer.

That story resulted in Kygo the DJ inviting Kygo the dog (and his owner) to the human Kygo’s Palm Tree Music Festival, which happened in Southampton, N.Y., on Saturday (June 22).

Trending on Billboard

Happily, the dog and his crew made it to the show, with the Kygos convening backstage to pose for photos and swap merch. Kygo the DJ gave the dog a Palm Tree Crew bandanna, while Kygo the dog (and his owner) gifted a “Kygo Krew” hat and T-shirts with the dog’s face on it.

“That’s why I want a dog,” human Kygo said during the meeting, “just to have someone to come back home to and it’s just pure pleasure.”

The story originally went viral after the dog and its owner were featured on the dog-centric Instagram account The Dogist. The pup at the heart of the story is a seven-year-old husky, malamute, poodle and collie mix who’s been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Earlier this month, his owner stated that “he doesn’t have much longer.”

The Dogist host Elias Weiss Friedman was also on site for the meeting, posting that Kygo the DJ “invited us all out to his concert in Southampton to meet up before the show. It turns out, despite not growing up with dogs or having one at the moment, Kygo fully understood the importance of a dog and what they mean to their person. I want to thank Kygo the man for making Kygo the dog’s second bucket list dream come true.”

The post also notes that Kygo the dog’s owner received a $10,000 donation from the animal-focused nonprofit The Brady Hunter Foundation to help pay for treatment costs.

The fourth Hamptons iteration of Kygo’s traveling Palm Tree Music Festival featured performances by artists including Swedish House Mafia, Sofi Tukker, Purple Disco Machine and Kygo himself. The producer’s fifth studio album, Kygo, was released this past Friday, June 21.

Tupac Shakur Murder Suspect Keefe D Asks For Release On $750K Bail

Keefe D will seek to prepare for his upcoming trial from the comfort of his home. He has asked to be set free on bail.

As reported by The Grio the former Los Angeles gang leader has asked the presiding judge to let him out of jail while he waits for trial. On Thursday, June 20 his legal representatives formally submitted a request on the behalf of their client. In response the judge has scheduled a hearing to review the request where Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ attorney will ask for bail. If approved the alleged Southside Crip shot caller will be free on house arrest with electric monitoring.

Recently media personality and entertainment entrepreneur Wack 100, born Cash Jones, has toyed with the idea of putting up the bail money for Keffe D. In a recent livestream on Clubhouse he spoke to his Keefe’s son, Duane Davis Jr., seemingly confirming he would help them secure the bond in exchange for Keefe’s story rights. It has not been confirmed by Keffe D’s attorney Carl Arnold whether or not Wack 100 contributed to the bail monies.

In September 2023 Davis was arrested and charge for first degree murder for his involvement in the drive by shooting that left Tupac Shakur dead. He has since been held at Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. His trial is expected to commence in November.
