Crystal Aikin Scores Her First Gospel Airplay Chart No. 1 With ‘He Can Handle It’

Crystal Aikin’s “He Can Handle It” ascends to No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart (dated June 29). The single increased by 2% in plays June 14-20, according to Luminate.

The song, which was recorded live, was co-written by Nate Bean and Ayron Lewis.

Aikin, from Tacoma, Wash., banks her first chart-topper in her third Gospel Airplay appearance. It follows “So Amazing,” which peaked at No. 21 in March 2015, and “I Desire More,” which hit No. 18 in June 2009.

Aikin has achieved two top 10s in her two appearances on Top Gospel Albums. All I Need arrived at its No. 8 best in February 2015 after her self-titled debut set opened and peaked at No. 3 in January 2009.

Aikin, who earned a nursing degree from Pacific Lutheran University, won the first season of BET’s Sunday Best in 2007. Genre cornerstone Kirk Franklin hosted the talent show from that year to 2021.

‘Look At’ Koryn Hawthorne

Also on Gospel Airplay, Koryn Hawthorne adds her fourth top 10 as “Look at God” rises 12-9 (up 23%). The song, which the Abbeville, La., native co-penned, follows “Speak to Me,” which became her second No. 1 in April 2021, leading for a week. Her rookie entry “Won’t He Do It” began a 19-week command in March 2018 and “Unstoppable” reached No. 5 in June 2019.

On the multimetric Hot Gospel Songs tally, Hawthorne has three chart-toppers. As a finalist on the eighth season of NBC’s The Voice, she first led with “How Great Thou Art,” which she performed on the show, for a week in April 2015. “Won’t He Do It” dominated for 41 weeks beginning in March 2018, the chart’s longest reign ever by a female artist, and “Speak to Me” ruled for 19 frames beginning in November 2020.

The Alchemist Wants to Work With Jay-Z: ‘He’s Always Been on My List’

During a conversation with fellow producer Cardo for Lucid Monday’s cover story, The Alchemist said he still wants to work with Jay-Z.

“Jay always been on my list. I’ve been saying it for 100 years,” the producer said, after claiming there’s not many artists left on his bucket list. “At this point, I hope it would be a mutual thing, like I would want to work with somebody that would wanna work with me. There’s a couple that’s brewing that’s like bucket list s–t for me that I hope happens. I still have hopes like that.”

While admitting Jay Electronica indirectly made the dream happen when he featured Jay on the Alchemist-produced song “The Neverending Story,” he still hasn’t made a beat specifically for the Brooklyn legend.

However, that collab almost happened back in 2001. During an appearance on the podcast A Waste of Time in 2015, the Los Angeles producer told hosts ItsTheReal he played the “We Gonna Make It” beat for Jay, but he passed on it. “I actually played him the ‘We Gonna Make It’ beat,” he said. “I was playing it for Hip-Hop and then he told Jay come in the room and he was just like, ‘Yeah, it’s dope,’ and just walked out, he just stuck his head in.” The beat was also offered to Nas, but eventually landed in the hands of Jadakiss.

He then said he ran into Jay at a popular New York City nightclub after Jada’s version blew up and the rapper had a message for him. “He leaned in my ear and was like, ‘Yo, when you gonna stop wasting them beats?’” he recalled. “And it was ill because it was very confident and he wasn’t trying to be funny, he was deada–. Like, that was the first thing he said to me. I looked at him and he was serious, it threw me for a loop.”

The Alchemist then said he suggested they go to the studio after the club to which Jay agreed to meet up at Baseline, but he never showed. “Got my drum machine, went over to Baseline… he did not show up.” However, that session ended with a placement on State Property’s second album The Chain Gang Vol. 2 with the song “Still in Effect” featuring Freeway and Neef.

Back in March, V dropped his first post-military enlistment single, “FRI(END)S,” which was written entirely in English. The song followed his September 2023 EP Layover, which the K-pop star dropped just a couple months before beginning his mandatory service in the South Korean military alongside bandmates RM, Jimin, Jung Kook, Jin, J-Hope and Suga, who have also enlisted.

previously confirmed that he had banked a few projects to release during his time away, writing in a December statement that he’d “prepared a lot of things” for the 18-month period. “I will miss you so much,” he penned at the time, as translated to English. “Actually, I’m really sad that I can’t make happy memories with my ARMY for the time being […] it’s the hardest not to see the ARMY.”

Major Labels Sue Over AI, Ye Settles Copyright Case, Megan Beats Lawsuit & More Music Law News

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly newsletter about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: The world’s biggest music companies file lawsuits against AI music firms accusing them of stealing copyrighted music at “an “unimaginable scale”; a federal judge rules that Megan Thee Stallion didn’t copy her chart-topping “Savage” from an earlier song; the artist formerly known as Kanye West settles a copyright lawsuit filed by Donna Summer’s estate; and much more.

THE BIG STORY: Major Labels Sue AI Music Cos. Over Training

In the latest battle between the music industry and artificial intelligence firms, the three major music companies filed lawsuits against AI startups Suno and Udio over allegations that they copyrighted music to train their models on an “unimaginable scale.”

Like numerous other copyright cases already filed by book authors, visual artists, newspaper publishers and other creative industries, the new lawsuits ask what could ultimately wind up being a trillion-dollar legal question: Is it copyright infringement to use vast troves of proprietary works to build an AI model that spits out new creations? Or is it just a form of legal fair use, transforming all those old works into something entirely new?

The music business already picked that fight once, when major publishers sued AI giant Anthropic last year over its use of written lyrics to train AI models. (That case remains pending). But the new case, spearheaded by the Recording Industry Association of America, is the first to deal with sound and music itself, targeting two companies that are offering models that spit out full songs at the push of a button.

Suno and Udio have quickly become two of the most important players in the emerging field of AI-generated music. Udio has already produced what could be considered an AI-generated hit song with “BBL Drizzy,” a parody track popularized with a remix by super-producer Metro Boomin and later sampled by Drake himself. And as of May, Suno had raised a total of $125 million in funding to create what Rolling Stone called a “ChatGPT for music.”

In the new lawsuit, the record labels alleged that that success had been built on the backs of real human artists: “Since the day it launched, Udio has flouted the rights of copyright owners in the music industry as part of a mad dash to become the dominant AI music generation service. Neither Udio, nor any other generative AI company, can be allowed to advance toward this goal by trampling the rights of copyright owners.”

For more, go read Kristin Robinson’s full story on the new lawsuits, complete with access to the actual complaints filed against Suno and Udio. And stay tuned to Billboard for more updates as the two cases unfold in the federal courts…

Other top stories this week…

MEGAN WINS COPYRIGHT CASE – A federal judge ruled that Megan Thee Stallion didn’t copy her chart-topping song “Savage” from an earlier song, saying the songs were “qualitatively different” and that there was no evidence the superstar has ever even heard the little-known instrumental track.

SUMMER SAMPLE SETTLEMENT – Ye (formerly Kanye West) finalized a settlement with the estate of Donna Summer to resolve a copyright lawsuit that accused him of “shamelessly” using her 1977 hit “I Feel Love” without permission in his song “Good (Don’t Die).” An attorney for the Summer estate confirmed to Billboard that the settlement did not include a license for West to legally re-release the offending track: “We got what we wanted.”

YSL TRIAL DRAMA CONTINUES – Yak Gotti, one of Young Thug’s co-defendants in the YSL gang case in Atlanta, asked the Georgia Supreme Court to force Judge Ural Glanville to recuse himself from the ongoing trial, citing recent revelations about a secret meeting between the judge, prosecutors and a key witness. Gotti’s lawyers warned that the judge’s actions “offend public confidence in the independence, integrity, and impartiality of the judiciary.”

ALBUM HACKING SUIT RESOLVED Kelsea Ballerini reached a settlement to end her lawsuit against Bo Ewing, a superfan she had accused of hacking her and then leaking her unreleased album. Ballerini agreed to drop the case after Ewing promised to never again share or access the offending materials.

MADONNA CASE CLOSED – Two Madonna fans dropped their lawsuit complaining about delayed starts to her concerts, but the star’s lawyers quickly clarified that the move was “not the result of any settlement.” Reiterating earlier claims that the lawsuit had been a “strike suit” aimed at extorting a settlement, Madonna’s attorneys say they might still seek legal sanctions against the lawyers who filed the “frivolous” case.

PETTY DOC SPARKS LAWSUIT – A filmmaker named Martyn Atkins filed a lawsuitagainst Warner Music over the 2021 Tom Petty documentary Somewhere You Feel Free, claiming the movie featured 45 minutes of his copyrighted film footage of the late rock legend without permission or payment. Atkins claimed he had been “conned” into sharing the footage with the producers after they promised him the chance to direct the documentary.

Ice Cube Says a New ‘Friday’ Installment Is in the Works: ‘We Finally Got Some Traction’

“We’re working on it. We finally got some traction with Warner Bros.,” Cube told Flavor Flav after being asked if a new movie was on the way. “They have new leadership. My man Mike DeLuca — who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins — Mike DeLuca was there. So, now he’s running Warner Bros. And him and my man Michael Gruber was like, ‘Yo, what the f—k is going on with Friday? Man, let’s get this s—t back online.’”

The filmmaker has been trying to get the fourth movie off the ground for a while now. Back in 2022, Cube was on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast and expressed his frustration with the film studio. “I don’t know. Warner Bros. is weird right now. I don’t know what they’re doing, they don’t know what they’re doing,” he told the legendary boxer at the time. “We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going to be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”

Chris Tucker, who became a star after appearing in the first Friday movie, is open to reprising his role, but also put the blame on Warner Bros. for the delay. “It’s studios, and they gotta want to do it, and then it’s producers and all that stuff. It’s a lot that goes with it,”he told host Big Tigger during a March interview on Atlanta’s V-103 radio station.

Tentatively titled Last Friday, it would be the franchise’s first installment since 2002’s Friday After Next. Since the first film was released in 1995, three of its stars have passed away. Cube expressed his frustration on that subject as well.

“You know, I was a little hot because they had took so long,” he admitted to Flav. “John Witherspoon passed away, [Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr.] passed away, [Anthony ‘AJ’ Johnson] passed away. I’m like, ‘Man, we keep losing people, and y’all keep dicking around, not doing the movie the way it needed to be done.’”

Music Investment Platform JKBX Says Yields on Over Half of Its Available Songs Jumped in 2023

JKBX, the music investment platform backed by Spotify and Red Light Management, said Tuesday (June 25) that yields on more than half the songs up for investment on the platform saw substantial increases in 2023. That’s evidence, the start-up’s execs say, that if it makes dollars, it makes sense.

Pronounced “jukebox,” JKBX’s first Securities and Exchange Commission-regulated offering went live in March, giving average Joe investors the chance to buy royalty shares that earn money when songs like Adele‘s “Rumour Has It” or Taylor Swift‘s “Welcome To New York” get played.

Ten of the 85 songs in JKBX’s initial offering generated yields of 5% to 9.6% percent in 2023, while total revenue for songs in the listing was up 9% in 2023 compared to 2022, the company said. While investors get paid dividends based only on income that JKBX has received since April 1, which excludes most of the 2023 reported income, the jump in yields makes the case that investors stand to earn tangible returns, JKBX executives say.

Trending on Billboard

The highest-earning song by 2023 revenues was OneRepublic‘s “Counting Stars”, which generated $376,750 in combined revenue from the songwriter’s share of composition rights and producer’s share of sound recording rights. That works out to a 5.5% yield per royalty share for composition and a 6.98% yield per royalty share for sound recording rights.

Another OneRepublic song, “If I Lose Myself,” along with “Wings” by Birdy, were among the songs with the highest per-royalty-share yields in 2023, at 9.66% and 7.71%, respectively. When the company launched, executives estimated investor returns of around 3.5%.

The 10 most popular songs to buy royalty shares in include Beyoncé‘s “Halo,” Ellie Goulding‘s “Burn” and “Lean On” performed by Major Lazer, and DJ Snake, among others. The company declined to say what percentage of the royalty shares in the initial offering have sold.

JKBX is quick to caution that future returns are not guaranteed. The estimated yields are based on the last 12 months of income, and “variations in income are expected over the copyright lifespan of the asset,” the company says.

Institutional investors like insurance companies and pension funds have led recent demand for investing in music assets because the yields on music rights are typically resilient during broader market downturns and the asset class offers low-risk returns compared to other alternative assets.

Institutional investors, private equity funds and high-net-worth individuals have poured billions into acquiring direct stakes in catalogs or backing companies that do, or into buying securities backed by catalogs held by music companies like Concord, Kobalt and Chord.

JKBX was founded in 2022 with the goal of bringing retail investors into the asset class by offering a cheaper, Securities and Exchange Commission-regulated way to invest in music. It officially launched in March of this year.

“JKBX empowers people to invest in music as a regulated security, bringing together investment fundamentals with true passion,” JKBX CEO Scott Cohen said in a statement. “I believe that the fans that helped make these songs successful should also have the opportunity to share in the wealth.”

Lil Wayne & LeBron James Star in New Beats Pill Campaign: Where to Pre-Order the Bluetooth Speaker

Don’t call it a comeback. The Beats Pill is making its return with improved sound features, a cheaper price tag and Lil Wayne and LeBron James helping usher in the new era.

Announced on Tuesday (June 25), the new Beats Pill is 10 percent lighter than its predecessor, with a 20-degree tilt for “better on-axis sound projection.” It retails for $149.99 – around $50 cheaper than the original — and will be available in matte black, statement red and champagne gold.

After Wayne gets up to see where the noise is coming from, he ends up joining in on the party.

The Beats Pill offers up to 24 hours of battery life and a Fast Fuel charging option that gives you two hours of music playback after a 10-minute charge. The Bluetooth speaker has USB connectivity for continuous play (it’s iOS and Android compatible) and one-touch pairing.

“The Beats Pill is back and better than ever — now packed with outstanding sound, all-day battery life, and convenient features,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats. “From the beloved Pill characters to cameos in the world’s most watched music videos, the original Beats Pill was a pop culture phenom and we’re thrilled to bring back a fan favorite updated with the latest features in an iconic design.”

If you have the original Beats Pill, back from 2012 or 2013, then you probably remember the choppy sound quality and terrible bass. According to Beats, the new Pill promises to deliver “better sound than ever before.”

Beyond the acoustic upgrades, including a redesigned tweeter for “crisper highs and rich mid-range tones” and a reengineered racetrack woofer, Beats Pill features a removable carry lanyard, a soft-grip silicone backing and an IP67 dust and waterproof rating.

The Beats Pills is available for pre-order at Amazon, Beats, Apple.com and BeatsbyDre.com. The speaker will be released on June 27.

Motion Picture Academy Invites 487 to Become Members: Full List of 21 Music Branch Invitees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is inviting 487 artists and executives, including 21 in the music branch, to join the organization.

The invitations spotlight the Academy’s ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity. Of the 2024 class, 44% identify as women (up from 40% in last year’s new member invited class), 41% belong to underrepresented ethnic/racial communities (up from 34% last year) and 56% are from 56 countries and territories outside the U.S. (up from 52% last year).

The music branch was one of 14 branches that extended the majority of their invitations to candidates from countries or territories outside the U.S.

Six branches (not including music) invited more women than men. Four branches (again not including music) extended the majority of their invitations to members of underrepresented ethnic or racial communities.

The Academy notes that demographic information is provided by the candidate when possible or projected through research and will be confirmed by members upon acceptance. In keeping with past policy, those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2024. This is seen as a sign of the Academy’s laser focus on boosting its diversity numbers.

If all 2024 invitees accept membership, the total number of members (including emeritus members) will be 10,910. The number of voting members will be 9,934.

Likewise, if all 2024 invitees accept membership, 35% of the Academy will identify as women; 20% will be from underrepresented ethnic or racial communities; and 20% will be from countries or territories outside the U.S.

“We are thrilled to welcome this year’s class of new members to the Academy,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang said in a joint statement. “These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community.”

Eight individuals have been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches. These individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership.

There are 71 Oscar nominees, including 19 winners, among the invitees.
