AI Firms Udio and Suno React to Major Labels’ Lawsuit: ‘We Stand Behind Our Technology’

On Monday (June 24), the three major music companies filed lawsuits against artificial intelligence (AI) music startups Suno and Udio, alleging the widespread infringement of copyrighted sound recordings “at an almost unimaginable scale.” Spearheaded by the RIAA, the two similar lawsuits arrived four days after Billboard first reported that the labels were seriously considering legal action against the two startups.

Filed by plaintiffs Sony Music, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, the lawsuits allege that Suno and Udio have unlawfully copied the labels’ sound recordings to train their AI models to generate music that could “saturate the market with machine-generated content that will directly compete with, cheapen and ultimately drown out the genuine sound recordings on which [the services were] built.”

Trending on Billboard

Hours later, Suno CEO Mikey Shulman responded to the lawsuit with a statement sent to Billboard. “Suno’s mission is to make it possible for everyone to make music,” he said. “Our technology is transformative; it is designed to generate completely new outputs, not to memorize and regurgitate pre-existing content. That is why we don’t allow user prompts that reference specific artists. We would have been happy to explain this to the corporate record labels that filed this lawsuit (and in fact, we tried to do so), but instead of entertaining a good faith discussion, they’ve reverted to their old lawyer-led playbook. Suno is built for new music, new uses, and new musicians. We prize originality.”

An RIAA spokesperson fired back at Shulman’s comment, saying: “Suno continues to dodge the basic question: what sound recordings have they illegally copied? In an apparent attempt to deceive working artists, rightsholders, and the media about its technology, Suno refuses to address the fact that its service has literally been caught on tape — as part of the evidence in this case — doing what Mr. Shulman says his company doesn’t do: memorizing and regurgitating the art made by humans. Winners of the streaming era worked cooperatively with artists and rightsholders to properly license music. The losers did exactly what Suno and Udio are doing now.”

Udio responded on Tuesday (June 25) with a lengthy statement posted to the company’s website. You can read it in full below.

In the past two years, AI has become a powerful tool for creative expression across many media – from text to images to film, and now music. At Udio, our mission is to empower artists of all kinds to create extraordinary music. In our young life as a company, we have sat in the studios of some of the world’s greatest musicians, workshopped lyrics with up-and-coming songwriters, and watched as millions of users created extraordinary new music, ranging from the funny to the profound.

We have heard from a talented musician who, after losing the ability to use his hands, is now making music again. Producers have sampled AI-generated tracks to create hit songs, like ‘BBL Drizzy’, and everyday music-lovers have used the technology to express the gamut of human emotions from love to sorrow to joy. Groundbreaking technologies entail change and uncertainty. Let us offer some insight into how our technology works.

Generative AI models, including our music model, learn from examples. Just as students listen to music and study scores, our model has “listened” to and learned from a large collection of recorded music.

The goal of model training is to develop an understanding of musical ideas — the basic building blocks of musical expression that are owned by no one. Our system is explicitly designed to create music reflecting new musical ideas. We are completely uninterested in reproducing content in our training set, and in fact, have implemented and continue to refine state-of-the-art filters to ensure our model does not reproduce copyrighted works or artists’ voices.

We stand behind our technology and believe that generative AI will become a mainstay of modern society.

Virtually every new technological development in music has initially been greeted with apprehension, but has ultimately proven to be a boon for artists, record companies, music publishers, technologists, and the public at large. Synthesizers, drum machines, digital recording technology, and the sound recording itself are all examples of once-controversial music creation tools that were feared in their early days. Yet each of these innovations ultimately expanded music as an art and as a business, leading to entirely new genres of music and billions of dollars in the pockets of artists, songwriters and the record labels and music publishers who profit from their creations.

We know that many musicians — especially the next generation — are eager to use AI in their creative workflows. In the near future, artists will compose music alongside their fans, amateur musicians will create entirely new musical genres, and talented creators — regardless of means — will be able to scale the heights of the music industry.

The future of music will see more creative expression than ever before. Let us use this watershed moment in technology to expand the circle of creators, empower artists, and celebrate human creativity.

“Here We Go!,” which samples Axel F’s 2005 hit, “Crazy Frog,” will serve as an original song for the Eddie Murphy-led film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which arrives on Netflix July 3. The news comes a few weeks after the streaming platform unveiled the trailer for Axel F, which is directed by Mark Molloy and serves as the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. Murphy first played the titular Detroit detective Alex Foley in 1984, and last filled his shoes in 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III.

“Here We Go!” will mark the Lil Nas’ first solo release since “Where Do We Go Now?,” which appeared in his 2023 documentary Long Live Montero. He also recently teamed up with Camila Cabello on the single “He Knows,” which followed his duet “Tennessee” with Kevin Abstract.

Taylor Swift Calls Herself a ‘Long Time Hugh Grant Stan’ After Actor Praises Eras Tour

If you look for it, you’ll find that love actually is all around — especially between Taylor Swift and Hugh Grant.

Over the weekend, the 63-year-old actor was one of many stars in attendance at the 34-year-old pop star’s Eras Tour shows in London, where he watched from a VIP tent alongside Tom Cruise, Greta Gerwig, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. On Sunday, Grant took to X to sing Swift’s praises, writing, “Thanks so much from one ageing London boy, wife and thrilled 8 year old #halfgirlhalfbracelet.”

It also seems as though the Notting Hill heartthrob — who shares three kids with his wife, producer Anna Eberstein — got some quality time with the 14-time Grammy winner’s beau, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, at the concert. “You have an incredible show, an amazing and v hospitable team and excellent if gigantic boyfriend,” he added in his tweet. “#tequilashots.”

The next day, Swift responded to the Golden Globe winner’s post to say that his feelings are very much mutual. “As a long time Hugh Grant stan this tweet is very important to my culture,” she quipped Monday.

Trending on Billboard

Grant and his tentmates attended the second of the musician’s three nights at Wembley Stadium, to which Swift will return for five more Eras shows in August. Prince William and his children Prince George and Princess Charlotte were present for opening night, while Sir Paul McCartney was spotted dancing and trading friendship bracelets with Swifties on closing.

Swift’s tenure at the venue was filled with surprises, including acoustic duets with Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Gracie Abrams. Most notable, however, was Kelce’s hilarious on-stage cameo in between “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” on night three, during which he carried his superstar girlfriend in his arms and playfully coached her on her dancing.

“I’m still cracking up/swooning over @killatrav’s Eras Tour debut,” Swift later wrote on Instagram. “Looking out into crowds of 90,000 fans each night and hearing that VOLUME… Those were some of the loudest crowds I’ve ever heard … Never going to forget these shows.”

Kali Uchis Reacts to ‘Igual Que Un Angel’ With Peso Pluma Topping Latin Airplay & Latin Pop Airplay Charts

Kali Uchis and Peso Pluma add a new No. 1 to their Billboard Latin Airplay chart count as “Igual Que Un Ángel” ascends from No. 3 to lead the June 29-dated ranking.

“Thank you to everyone for your support, for believing in this song,” Uchis tells Billboard. “Thank you!”

Trending on Billboard

“Igual Que Un Ángel” puts the Colombian-American singer/songwriter back at No. 1 after almost three years, when “Telepatía” climbed 5-1 on the survey dated July 3, 2021, for her second champ on the overall Latin Airplay ranking. Peso picks up his fourth ruler, and second in 2024, following the one-week coronation of “Qlona,” with Karol G (March 2-dated tally).

In the tracking week of June 14-20, “Ángel” registered 7.93 million audience impressions, with a 13% increase from the week prior, according to Luminate. Thanks to that sum, the collab lands at No. 1 in its 11th week. The chart’s previous No. 1, El Fantasma’s “Sabor a Michelada,” falls to No. 10 with a 36% decline in audience, to 5.5 million.

“Ángel” takes the lead on Latin Airplay 23 weeks after it debuted atop the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs, Latin Streaming Songs and Latin Digital Song Sales charts (dated Jan. 27). On the latter, it dominated for four consecutive weeks. The song also made its run across multiple Billboard charts. Here’s the recap:

Peak Date, Chart Peak Postion, Weeks at No. 1
Jan. 27, Billboard Global 200, No. 9
Jan. 27, Hot Latin Songs, No. 1, one
Jan. 27, Latin Streaming Songs, No. 1, one
Jan. 27, Latin Digital Song Sales, No. 1, four
Feb. 3, Billboard Global Excl. U.S. No. 10
Feb. 3, Billboard Hot 100, No. 22
March 30, Rythmic Airplay, No. 35
June 29, Latin Airplay, No. 1
June 29, Latin Pop Airplay: No. 1

With “Ángel,” Peso Pluma switches genre gears and lands his first No. 1 on Latin Pop Airplay with his firt chart entry, with a 2-1 lift. (He’s previously charted No. 1s on both Regional Mexican Airplay and Latin Rhythm Airplay.) Uchis, meanwhile, loges her second No. 1 on Latin Pop Airplay, also three years after “Telepatía” took charge for one week in March 2021. In between, “No Hay Ley,” her second and last entry as a soloist unaccompanied by any other artist, reached No. 11 high in Feb. 2023.

Elsewhere, thanks to its radio pull, “Ángel” moves 19-16 on Hot Latin Songs, despite a 2% dip in streaming activity, with 2 million official U.S. streams during the tracking week.

Billy Ray Cyrus Claims Wife Firerose Physically Abused Him in Latest Divorce Case Salvo

Amid an ugly divorce case, Billy Ray Cyrus is now claiming in new court filings that he was abused physically, verbally and emotionally by his soon-to-be-ex-wife Firerose.

A week after Firerose (Johanna Rose Hodges) accused Cyrus of “psychological abuse” during their short-lived marriage, the singer fired back with his own filing on Monday – not only “vehemently” denying her allegations, but leveling his own claims of abusive behavior against his estranged wife.

“Defendant’s allegations of abuse were only made to sensationalize her false complaints by using the word abuse,” Cyrus’ lawyers write. “While the plaintiff would acknowledge that he was certainly vocal, frustrated and angry with the defendant in May 2024, it is the plaintiff who, in fact, has been abused. Not only verbally and emotionally by the defendant, but PHYSICALLY.”

Trending on Billboard

Cyrus filed for divorce on May 22, citing “irreconcilable differences” and “inappropriate marital conduct.” The pair, who first started dating in 2022 after years of friendship, were married for only 7 months before the split.

The proceedings have since turned nasty. In a June 13 filing, Cyrus filed an emergency motion accusing Firerose of nearly $100,000 in unauthorized “fraudulent” credit card charges and seeking a temporary restraining order to stop her. Her attorneys later said the accusations were “untrue.”

Then in a June 14 response to the complaint, Firerose claimed that she had been the “victim of extreme verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse. She claimed that Cyrus had been “unpredictable and volatile” due to substance abuse, and had filed for divorce just a day before she had been scheduled to undergo a preventive double mastectomy.

In his response filing on Monday, Cyrus argued that Firerose had scheduled the “elective” surgery as part of an ongoing threat to use the surgery to “ruin his longstanding career in the entertainment industry” if he chose to file for divorce. He claims that she at one point made the threat explicit, allegedly saying: “If you even think about divorcing me right now, I will tell everyone that you did it because of the double mastectomy and your career will be over.”

An attorney for Firerose did not immediately return a request for comment.

“She’s a winner, champion/ Superhuman, number one/ She’s a sister, she’s mother,” the lyrics read. “Open your eyes, just look around and you’ll discover/ You know/ It’s a woman’s world and you’re lucky to be living in it.”

At press time, no additional information was available on the title of Perry’s sixth full-length studio album, the follow-up to 2020’s Smile. Perry began ramping up excitement for her next era last month when, after finishing her seven-year run on American Idol, she changed her social media profile pic to a sleek, futuristic silver logo with her shiny initials floating inside a pair of parentheses.

Watch Morgan Wallen Get Hit in the Face With a Pair of Women’s Underwear Mid-Concert

At one of his recent shows, Morgan Wallen got hit in the face with a pair of women’s underwear while he was in the middle of performing his Billboard Hot 100-topping Post Malone duet “I Had Some Help.” Luckily, he didn’t need any help when it came to handling the interruption like a pro.

In a clip posted by a fan who attended the country star’s Friday concert in Minneapolis, Wallen smiles while singing in front of an enormous audience at U.S. Bank Stadium. As he crouches down on the catwalk to get slightly closer to fans in the front row, a baby-blue thong flies into frame, gently smacking the hitmaker’s forehead.

Wallen then instinctively catches the undergarment in his non-microphone-wielding hand. Grinning, he stands up and chucks it back into the crowd before walking away.

Trending on Billboard

The incident comes amid the “Last Night” singer’s One Night at a Time World Tour, which kicked off in April. He will next take the stage in Denver, with back-to-back shows scheduled for June 28 and 29 at Empower Field at Mile High.

Just days after he launched the trek, Wallen was arrested and briefly jailed for allegedly throwing a chair off the roof of Eric Church’s bar in Nashville. He later posted an apology to X, writing, “I’m not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility. … I have the utmost respect for the officers working every day to keep us all safe.”

“Regarding my tour, there will be no change,” he added at the time.

The Tennessee native is fresh off a five-week run at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with his and Posty’s collaboration, which dropped mid-May. The track was dethroned this week by Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” which tops the chart dated June 29, 2024.

Who Is Yeri Mua? Meet The Mexican Influencer Who Signed with Sony Music México

The life of Mexican influencer Yeri Mua has taken a new turn with her foray into music, writing yet another chapter in her peculiar story.

Born in the port of Veracruz, Mexico, Yeri Cruz Varela (real name) went viral in 2018 at just 16 years old, doing makeup tutorials on YouTube and social media that attracted thousands. But that was only the beginning. Over time, the girl with a carefree spirit would share with her audience family aspects such as her relationship with her parents, whom she made part of her content; her stormy love affairs, which became part of her daily life in her online publications; and her much talked about physical transformation, achieved after several cosmetic surgeries and, of course, makeup.

All of this has grown her fandom: On TikTok, for instance, she has more than 22.6 million followers; on Instagram, she boasts 12.1 million. (On YouTube she has a separate account where she now posts her music).

Her friendship with Mexican reggaetón stars like Jey F and El Gudi led her to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer in 2023, when she collaborated with them on the song “Chupón”, whose video has more than 100 million views. Then came “Línea del Perreo” with Uzielito Mix, El Jordan 23 and DJ Kiire, and “Mamita Rica” with rising star Kenia Os, who also started her career as an influencer.

Trending on Billboard

Today, at 22, Yeri Mua is a celebrity who has caught the attention of superstars like J Balvin, with whom she released “G Low Kitty Remix” last April. Shortly thereafter, the content creator-turned-singer moved on from being an independent artist by signing a contract with Sony Music Mexico in early June. And, on Tuesday (June 25), she received a nomination for Premios Juventud in the “Creator of the Year” category.

In an conversation with Billboard Español, the Mexican influencer of the moment talked about her music plans, her ability to learn languages, her thoughts about starting a family, the moments that have shaped her character, as well as her plans to retire early.

How was your signing day with Sony Music?

As a woman I felt fulfilled. My managers, my best friend, my parents were there. Just before signing, my parents and I had a very intimate moment where we asked my grandfather, who is in heaven, for his blessings and to enlighten me on this important path.

Your parents have been together for many years. Have you imagined yourself getting married?

You bet I have. I would have no problem getting married at this age, even though many people say it’s not good. I’m not afraid because there is divorce. A wedding is a very nice family celebration.

Your relationships have been much talked about and your partners have even been criticized.

The truth is that I used to love toxic boyfriends — but to get married, I wouldn’t marry just anyone. For example, I get along very well with my current partner, because he listens to me in everything and that makes me happy.

I would like a beautiful [wedding] gown. There are not so many weddings anymore, so I would like a party in style. Maybe I would get married between 25 and 27.

Despite your age, you seem to have already experienced a lot. What is Yeri really like?

I think it is very demonized to make mistakes; making mistakes is a way to learn and move forward, and that has been my life. Many people think that I have always been a liberal person sexually and in every way — but no, when I was 17 my mother did not allow me to go out with skirts or showing cleavage.

My personality was formed as I grew up, because it was a process for my parents to accept the way I am now. I have always been extroverted, but it was a process. Today they love me and accept what I do.

Does anyone advise you on what to do?

I have not learned from what others tell me, I have to live it and stumble, and then I can get over the bumps. I don’t have to follow the advice of others; I have to follow my intuition even if it sucks. Today I can say that the problems I got into one, two or three years ago I would not commit them again.

You have talked about retiring young, at age 35. Is this true?

Yes, because I want to have a family and I don’t want my children to be nepo babies, to be exposed. If I am exposed it is because I want to. I don’t want my children to be exposed to cameras or fame without them causing it.

If I am working hard and breaking my back right now, it is to give them a normal childhood. I would like to have two children.

Has making money always been your objective?

I am in favor of the fact that it is not necessary to get a college degree. Since high school, I started studying hairstyling, because we were not going through a very good economic period and I started working since I was a teenager: I did nails, scrubbed feet, took care of children, I did everything because I liked to earn money. My mom allowed me to do high school online as long as I worked and I haven’t stopped.

I believe that no one should skip the stage of enjoying youth. However, I believe that working changes young people’s mentalities.

Are there any other passions you have besides music and makeup?

I always went to private schools, although I studied one year in the U.S. in a public school.

My school in Mexico was trilingual, so in addition to Spanish, I learned English and Mandarin Chinese. Languages have always been easy for me. In fact, I started studying languages and I would like to return to it.

How do you stay in shape?

I confess that I had rhinoplasty, liposuction twice and breast implants. Before my surgeries I was 20 kilos (44 lbs.) overweight — I lost weight on my own and then I had surgery. To be honest, I am not so much of an exerciser nor a dieter. At home I have a person, Mrs. Lucy, who cooks for me. If you eat healthy at home, you don’t need diets.

Tell us about the experience of making a video with J Balvin.

Although it was very fast, it was very pleasant. Colombians have something special, they make you feel good. J Balvin is someone I admire for the musical legacy he is leaving, he is a gentleman.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=FmAyIYFqcTI&version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-US&autohide=2&wmode=transparent

Who would you like to collaborate with?

My dream reggaetón collaboration would be with Karol G or Tokischa, but artists that I also love and are top for me are Ice Spice and Doja Cat. I’m very inspired by their image, and I’m going to work to achieve it.
