Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” rebounds to No. 1, from No. 3, on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, sparked by the July 4 premiere of its official video.

The track adds a second week at the Hot 100’s summit, after it debuted at No. 1 nine weeks earlier. It became a pop-culture fixture and spent the next eight weeks after its arrival between Nos. 2 and 6, including the last two frames at No. 3. In that span, it was further boosted by Lamar’s Juneteenth The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert – in which he performed the seething diss track five times – at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

(Only two non-holiday songs have logged more time, nine weeks each, between stays at No. 1 on the Hot 100: Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” in 2023 and Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” in 2013.)

Meanwhile, Lamar lands his first multi-week Hot 100 No. 1 on his own; he previously led with no billed collaborators for a week in 2017 with “Humble.” He has ruled the Hot 100 for an overall personal-best three weeks in April with “Like That,” with Future and Metro Boomin. He earned the first of his four No. 1s for a week in 2015 as featured on Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.”

Also in the latest Hot 100’s top 10, Morgan Wallen’s “Lies Lies Lies” launches at No. 7, becoming his 10th song to reach the region.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. Disney Music Group Teams With AudioShake to Separate Stems of Classic Songs Using AI

Disney Music Group and AudioShake, an AI stem separation company, are teaming up. As part of their partnership, AudioShake will help Disney separate the individual instrument tracks (“stems”) for some of its classic back catalog and provide AI lyric transcription.

According to a press release, Disney says that it hopes this will “unlock new listening and fan engagement experiences” for the legendary catalog, which includes everything from the earliest recordings of Steamboat Willie (which is now in the public domain), to Cinderella, to The Lion King, to contemporary hits like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Given so many of Disney’s greatest hits were made decades ago with now-out-of-date recording technology, this new partnership will allow the company to use the music in new ways for the first time. Stem separation, for instance, can help with re-mixing and mastering old audio for classic Disney films. It could also allow Disney to isolate the vocals or the instrumentals on old hits.

Trending on Billboard

Disney’s partnership with AudioShake began when the tech start-up was selected for the 2024 Disney Accelerator, a business development program designed to accelerate the growth of new companies around the world. Other participants included AI voice company Eleven Labs and autonomous vehicle company Nuro.

At the accelerator’s Demo Day 2024, on May 23, AudioShake gave a hint at what could be to come in their partnership with Disney when AudioShake CEO, Jessica Powell, showed how stem separation could be used to fix muffled dialog and music in the opening scene of Peter Pan.

Disney explained at the Demo Day that many of their earlier recordings are missing their original stems and that has limited their ability to use older hits in sync licensing, remastering, and emerging formats like immersive audio and lyric videos.

“We were deeply impressed by AudioShake’s sound separation technology, and were among its early adopters,” says David Abdo, SVP and General Manager of Disney Music Group. “We’re excited to expand our existing stem separation work as well as integrate AudioShake’s lyric transcription system. AudioShake is a great example of cutting-edge technology that can benefit our artists and songwriters, and the team at AudioShake have been fantastic partners.”

“Stems and lyrics are crucial assets that labels and artists can use to open up recordings to new music experiences,” says Powell. “We’re thrilled to deepen our partnership with Disney Music Group, and honored to work with their extensive and iconic catalog.”

Desiigner Explains What Led To His “Indecent Exposure” On That International Flight Last Year

Last year, Brooklyn rapper Desiigner was arrested and charged for indecent exposure after he gratified himself on a flight for all to see.

Now that his actions have led to him being a registered sex offender, the “Panda” rapper opens up about the disturbing incident and tried to explain that though he did in fact commit the crime, he wasn’t exactly there at the time, so to say. In a recent interview with Adam22 on the No Jumper podcast, Desiigner explained that he was having what he called an “out of body” experience when he publicly choked his chicken (do the kids still say that?) due to, wait for it, his vegan diet?!

Well, not just his vegan diet but also because he was on meds at the time and that led to him needing to satisfy the most savage of urges regardless of where he was.

I didn’t know what I was doing. I was fully tweaked out of my mind. This is when I was vegan, I didn’t have enough sugars and stuff like that. I was kinda out of my body. It was a OB experience. It really wasn’t who my character was… I was on medication. I took medication on the plane and just went to sleep.”

While many assumed he was on something at the time of the incident, we would’ve never guessed it was veganism and meds.

Still, Desiigner hopes his fans don’t think he’s a pervert or anything like that and says that he’s been working on bettering himself since the incident including working out, meditating and apparently eating animals again.

Luckily, the incident didn’t bar him from continuing to board flights, but best believe when they see his name on that passenger manifest the flight attendants probably think “OMG, he’s coming.” Just sayin’.

What do y’all think about Desiigner’s explanation for his 2023 incident? Let us know in the comments section below.

Glen Powell & Daisy Edgar-Jones Try Out Viral ‘Apple’ Dance: See How Charli XCX Reacted

Brat summer is here to stay — and not even the strongest of national disasters could wipe it out. Twisters castmates Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos have become some of the latest stars to try out TikTok’s viral dance to Charli XCX‘s “Apple,” posting a video of the choreography that earned a seal of approval from the alt-pop star herself.

In a clip shared by the Normal People actress on Instagram Sunday (July 14), she stands in between her two costars as they each do the same purposefully rigid, staccato movements to Charli’s Brat fan-favorite song. The dance has blown up on TikTok in the weeks since the English singer-songwriter released her sixth studio album — which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in June — and Charli has also previously joined in on the trend.

“I think the apple’s rotten right to the core/ From all the things passed down from all the apples coming before,” her voice can be heard singing in Edgar-Jones’ video. “I split the apple down symmetrical lines/ And what I find is kinda scary, makes me just wanna drive.”

“Caught the lads up on Brat summer ?,” the Where the Crawdads Sing star captioned her post, under which Powell commented, “Hard to remember my life before this dance. Thank you, Daisy.”

Charli also made an appearance in the replies, leaving an ecstatic, “ABSOLUTELY !!”

The video comes just a few days ahead of Twisters‘ July 17 theatrical release. The film — which also stars Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Katy M. O’Brian and more — serves as a standalone sequel to 1996’s tornado-chasing epic Twister.

Cardi B Says Democrats Are Being ‘Selfish’ Letting Joe Biden Run for Presidential Again

Cardi B isn’t one to mince her thoughts when it comes to politics. Last week, she called the Democratic party “selfish” for continuing to let President Joe Biden seek re-election later this year.

A clip re-surfaced and Cardi doubled-down on her stance Thursday (July 11) when captioning the post with “Yeup Yeup Yeup” on X. She also voiced her belief that it was time for Vice President Kamala Harris to step in for Biden in the upcoming election.

“I feel like it was very selfish of Biden and the whole Democrat party that they allow Biden to continue to run for president,” she said. “I feel like they should have passed the torch to Kamala [Harris]. This was the perfect moment for her. Right now, I don’t feel like we have strong candidates.”

Cardi continued: “I feel like this would have been her perfect time to shine. We already know she’s sharp with the f–king mouth. Whatever value that Biden wants, she’s practically the same value. So I feel like it was a little bit selfish to not make that choice to give her this moment to run for presidency.”

In the replies, the Bronx native also tweaked her Bardi Gang fanbase’s name to the “Smarty gang.”

Cardi B has been critical of President Biden in the past, but calmed fans’ worries earlier in July when she assured them she’s never going to be a Republican. “I will never turn republican lol,” she replied to a fan on X.

Cardi has criticized the United States’ involvement in the Israel-Hamas war, and she was also critical of Biden’s inaction on the economy as part of her Rolling Stone cover story in May. “I feel like people got betrayed,” she said at the time. “It’s just like, ‘Damn, y’all not caring about nobody.’ Then, it really gets me upset that there is solutions to it. There is a solution. I know there’s a solution because you’re spending billions of dollars on any f–king thing.”

After interviewing and endorsing Biden in the 2020 election, Cardi isn’t supporting either party’s candidates right now. “I don’t f–k with both of y’all n—-s,” she said about Biden and Trump.

While reports emerged earlier in July about Democrats fielding interest in Harris going to the top of the ticket, Biden has said he has no plans to step aside. He addressed the public from the Oval Office on Sunday (July 14) in the wake of the apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump over the weekend in Pennsylvania.

“We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” Biden said. “The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do that … Politics must never be a literal battlefield, God forbid, a killing field.”

Glass Animals Are Proud Of ‘Heat Waves,’ But Would Have ‘Loved It’ If Rihanna Had Given It a Shot

Glass Animals would never look a gift hit in the mouth. After all, the group landed one of the biggest chart singles by a British group since the Spice Girls in 2021 when their slinky track “Heat Waves” went viral thanks to TikTok.

Surely you remember it? The one with the hypnotizing chorus, “Sometimes, all I think about is you/ Late nights in the middle of June/ Heat waves been fakin’ me out/ Can’t make you happier now.” Though the single from the Oxford-bred band was released in June 2020 in the heat of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, it took an epic 59 weeks to make its way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2022, where it stayed for five weeks; the song also set a record by hanging around on the Hot 100 for a total of 91 weeks, making it the longest-charting hit in the Hot 100’s then-64-year history.

Now, four years later, the group is prepping their return with their fourth studio album, I Love You So F***ing Much (July 19), and in an interview with The Independent singer Dave Bayley revealed that the band’s signature smash almost went to another artist with much more chart-topping experience.

Trending on Billboard

“I had hoped it would be someone else’s song,” Bayley told the paper about an attempt to get Rihanna to record it. “It got so far that I was sitting in the Roc Nation offices, playing the song for her manager,” he explained. “I ended up sending them parts of the song, but I’m grateful it didn’t go further.”

Don’t get him wrong, either way would have been just fine with him. “But at the same time, obviously, I’m a huge fan – I would’ve loved it,” Bayley said of the possibility of RihRih taking a swing at “Heat Waves.”

After “Heat Waves” passed the 90-week Hot 100 run of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” Bayley told Billboard he was blown away. “Wow, all I can say is wow,” he said at the time. “Many of you know when I wrote this song I was writing about missing someone I loved very dearly. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that it would lead to so much love and connection across the globe.”

Though she obviously didn’t take them up on the offer, the possibility that the song could have ended up in Rihanna’s hands would surely have thrilled her Navy. The mother of two toddlers and founder of the billion-dollar Fenty Beauty brand has not released a new album since 2016’s multi-platinum Anti and with the exception of a handful of features — as well as her 2022 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Oscar-nominated hit “Lift Me Up” — has kept a low musical profile for much of the past seven-plus years.

Anyma Announced As the First Electronic Act to Headline Sphere In Las Vegas

Electronic music is landing at Sphere. After much speculation about which electronic act might be the first to bring the genre to the boundary-pushing venue in Las Vegas, Sphere announced on Monday (July 15) that the role will be filled by Anyma.

The Italian producer, born Matteo Milleri, is also one half of the duo Tale of Us and debuted the Anyma project in 2021. The New Year’s Eve performance will find Anyma bringing his Genesys show to Sphere, marking the final time this show will be performed.

Named for Anyma’s 2023 debut album, Genesys and its 2024 followup Genesys II, the Genesys show has been performed for tens of thousands of people at venues in Asia, Europe, South America and beyond. The albums, like the corresponding visual performance, explore themes of technology, nature, humanity and coexistence.

Trending on Billboard

Anyma is thus well-suited for the venue, with the producer’s production heavily leaning into technology-driven visuals that will likely pop even harder when projected on Sphere’s dome-shaped structure. The performance will mark the first ever Anyma show in Las Vegas, with the performance officially titled Afterlife Presents Anyma, The End of Genesys.

The show is presented by Live Nation. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, July 23, with a presale happening on July 22.

While Las Vegas is a noted U.S. electronic music hub, since opening in September of 2023, Sphere has not, until now, featured the genre, instead focusing on rock with venue openers U2, along with jam bands via residencies from Phish and Dead & Company. Classic rock will also move into the venue this fall with a residency from the Eagles.

Verizon Faces Music Piracy Lawsuit From Major Labels: ‘Buried Its Head In The Sand’

The three major record labels are suing Verizon over allegations that the telecom giant effectively encouraged its internet subscribers to steal copyrighted music on a “staggering” scale.

In a lawsuit filed Friday in Manhattan federal court, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment claim that Verizon has “buried its head in the sand” in the face of repeated warnings about piracy on its network, fostering a “safe haven” for illegal activity.

“While Verizon is famous for its ‘Can you hear me now?’ advertising campaign, it has intentionally chosen not to listen to complaints from copyright owners,” lawyers for the labels wrote. “Rather than taking any steps to address its customers’ illegal use of its network, Verizon deliberately chose to ignore plaintiffs’ notices, willfully blinding itself to that information and prioritizing its own profits over its legal obligations.”

The financial stakes for Verizon could be very large. The labels accuse the company of infringing more than 17,000 songs; if a judge awarded the maximum penalty for each of those songs, the damages could total more than $2.5 billion. The allegedly-infringed tracks include music by The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Katy Perry and hundreds of other top artists.

Trending on Billboard

The new case is the latest in a long line of major lawsuits aimed at forcing internet service providers to take more proactive steps to eliminate piracy on their networks. In one such case, the labels initially won a shocking $1 billion verdict against Cox Communications.

For years, internet service providers typically weren’t held liable for individual infringements by their millions of users, thanks to a “safe harbor” provided by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. But starting in the mid-2010s, music companies began arguing that ISPs had forfeited that immunity by ignoring the DMCA’s requirement that they terminate “repeat infringers” from their network.

Beginning with a landmark case filed by BMG against Cox, those arguments have repeatedly proved successful. Major labels have filed similar cases against Cox, Charter, RCN and other ISPs in courts around the country, often winning huge judgments against them.

In the new lawsuit filed Friday, the labels turned those same arguments against Verizon. The company has allegedly received “hundreds of thousands” of notices of illegal file-sharing by specific subscribers, the lawsuit says, but “deliberately refused to take action” so that it could “continue to collect millions of dollars from them.”

“Verizon’s motivation for refusing to terminate or suspend the accounts of blatant infringing subscribers is simple: Verizon valued corporate profits over its legal responsibilities,” attorneys for the labels wrote.

Back in 2019, a federal jury in Virginia ordered Cox to pay $1 billion in a similar case, awarding the labels more than $99,000 for each of 10,017 separate songs. Though that verdict was later vacated on appeal, Cox could still face a similarly large fine when the total is recalculated in a future trial.

In technical terms, the lawsuit accuses Verizon of contributory infringement (meaning the company induced or authorized its customers to pirate the music) and vicarious infringement (meaning the ISP profited from illegal downloading it could have stopped).

A rep for Verizon did not return a request for comment on Monday.

Nine Inch Nails and Dr. Martens are collaborating on a new collection in honor of the 30th anniversary of band’s multi-platinum sophomore album, The Downward Spiral.

First teased on July 8 and officially revealed on Monday (July 15), the upcoming footwear collection features artwork from the Grammy-nominated album and a design inspired by NIN’s unforgettable live performances.

Trending on Billboard

“This collaboration just makes so much sense,” John Crawford, the band’s creative director, said in a statement. “Not just because of the countless fans I’ve seen wearing Dr. Martens at NIN concerts over the years (myself included), but because NIN and Dr. Martens are both known for rejecting convention and expectation in favor of innovation, with their distinctive ability to transcend genres and styles in a way that unique to each person who experiences them. The goal was always to make this collection feel as authentically Nine Inch Nails as possible, and I believe through close collaboration with the team at Doc’s we’ve succeeded in that.”

The collection includes a 10-eye 1490 boot that is inspired by the band’s cornstarch pre-show ritual. The lace-up boot is made from textured black and white Backhand leather and includes an ankle zipper on the side.

The eight-eye 1460 collab features artist Russell Mills’ album art as well as other references to the album. It also boasts a commando tread sole and multiple fastening options, including a branded ankle zipper.

For those looking for a shoe rather than a boot, the collection includes 1461 three-eyed piece that features The Downward Spiral‘s “crystal teeth” artwork and the name of the album printed in a subtle gloss.

The fourth piece of footwear in the collection is one fans won’t be able to purchase, though a few lucky ones will be gifted a pair. The 1490 10-eye boot features all-black leather that is embossed with the album’s artwork. According to the press release, the boot is “a fitting tribute to the unique bond shared by the band and those who have supported them for decades.”

Crawford participated in a Reddit AMA discussing the “inspiration and design choices behind the collaboration.” The AMA was held from 8 to 9 a.m. PT on July 15; fans were able to submit questions ahead of time for a chance to win one of five pairs of the fan-exclusive boot.

The Downward Spiral, released in 1994, became a pivotal album for Trent Reznor, the band’s mastermind. The critically acclaimed LP debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and went on to sell nearly four million copies.

Atticus Ross, who joined NIN in the early 2000s and with Reznor has become an Oscar-winning scoring duo, teased that he was “excited” to work on a new album. “I think we’re in a place now where we kind of have an idea,” he told GQ in April, as Ross and Reznor discussed their new multimedia company — With Teeth — and hinted at upcoming projects. NIN’s music is currently featured in the new season of The Bear.
