Chappell Roan Says She’s Trying to ‘Pump the Brakes’ on Fame Due to Fans Giving ‘Stalker Vibes’

Chappell Roan has had one of the fastest, most organic rises to stardom that the music industry has seen in the past decade — but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

While talking to host Drew Afualo on the Wednesday (July 17) episode of The Comment Section podcast, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter got candid about the pitfalls of notoriety. “People have started to be freaks — like, [they] follow me and know where my parents live, and where my sister works,” she said of intrusive fans. “All this weird s–t.”

Roan also revealed she once promised herself years ago that if she ever had fans giving “stalker vibes,” or if her family was ever in danger as a result of her fame, she would stop making music. “We’re there. We’re there!” she told Afualo. “I’m just kind of in this battle … I’ve pumped the brakes on, honestly, anything to make me more known. It’s kind of a forest fire right now. I’m not trying to go do a bunch of s–t.”

Trending on Billboard

Fans can only hope that the Missouri native doesn’t actually quit, but it’s true that she’s reached unprecedented levels of exposure in the months since she dropped her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess last year. After a series of headline-making performances — including at Coachella and Gov Ball 2024 — the 14-track project earned a new peak of No. 5 on the Billboard 200 earlier this month.

It’s not all bad, though. Roan also opened up about the good things her newfound fame has afforded her, including recognition from her idols. “People who I’ve looked up to my entire life are like peers, which is sick,” she told Afualo.

Her biggest pinch-me moment? “Miley [Cyrus] invited me to a party, and I was like, ‘You don’t know that you were my first concert when the Jonas Brothers were opening for you,’” she said, noting that she should’ve gone the Hannah Montana route of using a disguise.

50 Cent’s ‘Many Men’ Up 250% in Streams Following Donald Trump Assassination Attempt

Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up newsletter, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip.

This week: Only in 2024 could we use the phrase “post-assassination-attempt streaming bump” for a pair of hits — one new and one old — while the most recent albums from Megan Thee Stallion and Charli XCX both spin off new viral jams, and more.

Many Streams and Sales for 50 Cent Classic, New Tom McDonald Single Following Assassination Attempt on Former President Donald Trump

On Saturday night (July 13), the world was rocked by news of an assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump during a campaign rally near Butler, PA. As folks tried to make sense of what had happened, they inevitably turned to contemporary culture’s most reliable source of comfort in helping to process world events: memes. One of the most common such templates compared Trump to the rapper 50 Cent, who famously rose to fame following an attack that left him shot nine times. 50 himself got in on the game, posting a photo of his iconic Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album cover with a photo of Trump’s head crudely pasted over his own, along with the shrugging caption, “Trump gets shot and now I’m trending.”

Trending on Billboard

It wasn’t just his image that was trending, though: Listeners also flocked to 50’s Get Rich staple “Many Men (Wish Death),” the most frequent soundtrack for TikTok videos related to the assassination attempt, due to 50’s history and its “Many men/ Wish death ‘pon me” chorus. (Naturally, 50 himself also shared and responded to one or two over social media – and promoted his own “Many Men” T-shirts.) The result of it all was a massive surge in streams and sales for the song, as it collected over 2.2 million U.S. on-demand audio streams from July 13-15 – up 250% from the previous Saturday-to-Monday period – while also rising from a negligible amount of sales to over 2,000, according to Luminate.

50 wasn’t the only artist to capitalize on the event and its public reaction: Conservative rapper Tom MacDonald, who has been a regular presence on the Billboard charts over the past few years for his right-leaning, anti-woke anthems, also seized the moment with the July 14 release of new single “You Missed.” The song begins with the lyrics “They burning the country down with they progressiveness/ It started with changing what gender is” and goes on to blame the “evil” woke left for the assassination attempt, ultimately taunting: “B–ch, you missed/ Thank god the left can’t aim!”

Predictably, the song has resonated with its intended audience: “You Missed” racked up 423,000 on-demand audio streams over its first two days of release, as well as nearly 10,000 in digital song sales. If those numbers – particularly the latter one – keep up through the rest of the week, “You Missed” will likely hit on next week’s Billboard Hot 100 (dated July 27). – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Charli XCX’s ‘Apple’ Makes for Delicious TikTok Fodder

As Brat Summer continues, Charli XCX’s hit album has enjoyed plenty of viral moments — although “Apple,” the standout synth workout in the LP’s back half, has established itself as a fan favorite. As explained in the new Billboard cover story on Charli, “Apple” almost didn’t make the final cut of Brat — but now, the song has launched a multi-step dance routine on TikTok, which Charli performed herself alongside pals Troye Sivan and Terrence O’Connor.

Now, “Apple” is earning considerably more streams than it was a few weeks ago: during the week ending July 11, the track scored 2.71 million official on-demand U.S. streams, up 50 percent from its total two weeks prior (1.81 million), according to Luminate. In lieu of an official music video, Charli has been sharing fan performances of the “Apple” dance on social media, writing yesterday of the song, “It’s her world and we’re just living in it!” – JASON LIPSHUTZ

Megan Thee Stallion Eyes Bilingual Smash With Yuki Chiba Collab “Mamushi”

After topping the Billboard Hot 100 and eviscerating the rap game earlier this year with her blazing diss track “Hiss,” Megan Thee Stallion now has her eyes on another potential hit from her recently released Megan album.

According to Luminate, “Mamushi” — which features Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba (KOHH) — earned 10.2 million official on-demand U.S. streams during the period of July 5-11. That’s a whopping 39.5% increase from the 7.33 million streams the Koshy-produced track pulled during the week prior (June 28-July 4), following the album’s debut. And it’s still going up: Over the past weekend (July 12-14), “Mamushi” posted an 18.3% increase to 4.8 million official on-demand U.S. streams from the 4.05 million streams it earned during the previous weekend (July 5-7).

The somewhat unlikely hit has been significantly boosted by a viral TikTok dance craze, which has already seen participation from actress Tia Mowry, WNBA powerhouse A’ja Wilson and Thee Stallion herself. Dancer and TikTok user @mona712_official originated the infectious dance combination on June 29 – just one day after the Megan album hit DSPs. In the time since then, her clip has garnered over 19.4 million views, which helped the official “Mamushi” sound own over half a million posts in just two and a half weeks. On Instagram, the smash collab soundtracks over 327,000 reels. “Mamushi” is also far and away the most viewed audio clip from Megan, with over nine million views.

Already a Hot 100 hit – the track reached a new peak of No. 45 on the chart dated July 20 — “Mamushi” looks poised to continue climbing the chart.

Yaelokre Hops Into Viral Success With “Harpy Hare”

The folk revival continues with new artist Yaelokre and her song “Harpy Hare” which hit No. 1 on the Spotify Viral 50 Global and US charts this week. Yaelokre is unlike anyone else out there: The artist combines her folk songs with her hand-drawn woodland illustrations on all her artwork and lyric videos. Plus, when she performs live or to her TikTok audience (580.2K followers and counting), she wears a handmade animal mask. It’s almost as if Gorillaz existed in the same stylistic universe as the drawings of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, if that makes any sense.

While the visuals are certainly eye-catching, it seems that the music is what is turning TikTok scrollers in the true fans for Yaelokre. “Happy Hare” rose 577% in official on-demand U.S. streams from the week of June 14-20 to July 5-11 – and from last week to the first half of this week (July 12-14), it jumped again by 186%. – KRISTIN ROBINSON

Season’s Gainings: It’s Coming Home? Maybe Next Time

You know it’s football tournament season – the soccer kind, not the gridiron kind – when you start to see the whispers of “It’s coming home” spreading through social media, expressing optimism for England’s chances of finally claiming the Euro Cup championship. (Even American pop star Katy Perry got into the action on Sunday.) And with it, of course: a surge in consumption for Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds’ “Three Lions,” which was written as the team’s anthem when England hosted the 1996 Euro Cup, and has been revived for its Cup pursuit essentially every three years since – including last Sunday (July 14), where it spiked 714% from the prior Sunday to 72,000 official on-demand streams in the U.S. alone. Unfortunately, England fell to Spain in the Sunday championship finals – the country has still yet to win the tournament in its 66-year history – but hey, there’s always 2027. – AU

Janelle Monáe Recreates Infamous Michael Jackson Photo, Janet Jackson Is Over Interviews | Billboard News

Janelle Monáe is living it up in Europe and recreated an iconic photo of Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson confesses she’s over interviews. Keep watching to hear what she has to say!

Janet Jackson:

And I don’t mean to be rude, but I have to be honest with you. Please stop asking me questions.

Tetris Kelly:

Janet Jackson keeps it real as Janelle Monáe recreates one of her brother’s most infamous moments. Janelle Monáe has been having a blast on tour in Europe. She recreated one of Michael Jackson’s most recognizable moments in pop culture history, in a now deleted IG post, when he held his child outside a window to share with his fans. Janelle held her robot dog off the balcony with a towel over its head even wearing a similar outfit to MJ. Meanwhile, his sister Janet says she’s not a fan of interviews during an interview.

Dev Griffin:

People want to know, do you have a question that’s a “please stop asking me?” that you feel like maybe just comes up a little too much.

Janet Jackson:

And I don’t mean to be rude, but I have to be honest with you. Please stop asking me questions.

Tetris Kelly:

While talking to UK’s Heart Radio, Janet said she’s over interviews.

Janet Jackson:

I really don’t like speaking, so I’d rather stay quiet and listen to other people talk and that’s always been me.

Tetris Kelly:

We love an honest queen!

Janet Jackson:

Don’t ask me questions, are we finished?

Sexyy Red Revealed That Her ‘Dream Collab’ Is Coming Soon

More Sexyy Red news is coming out of her weekend at London’s Wireless Festival.

While chatting backstage with British interviewer Rambo she was asked her dream collab and not only did she say it who it was, the two have already done something together. “I did my dream collab already — Tyler the Creator,” she answered.

We all remember when Redd and Tyler first linked up and gave us a photo shoot for the ages. They ran into each other backstage at a Drake show in L.A. during the Toronto rapper’s It’s All a Blur tour and hit a couple poses. She immediately posted the pics on X with the caption,” My dreams came tru.”

We’re going to have to wait and see how that collab sounds, though, as Redd didn’t go into detail other than they’ve worked on something already. Hopefully that song comes sooner rather than later because it’s surely capable of sending Rap Twitter into a frenzy.

The St. Louis rapper also dropped the news that her and Chief Keef have a joint album in the works during a Viper magazine interview backstage at the Wireless Festival. “That’s my boo… We droppin’ an album soon,” she said when asked about her relationship with the influential Chicago rapper. “We just be on some money sh—. Some car sh—, fast cars. F—k these h—s. Buy some clothes. And keep your hair done,” is the description she gave of the project’s subject matter.

Death, Skulls & Caffeine: Inside the Booming Business of Metal Band-Branded Coffee

When he’s not obsessed with the double-bass patterns in “A Skull Full of Maggots” and “Hammer Smashed Face,” Cannibal Corpse‘s Paul Mazurkiewicz Jr. contemplates coffee. “Always thought, in the back of my mind, ‘It’d be cool to have a Cannibal Corpse coffee,’” he says. So when Mike Tonsetic, a founder of Concept Cafes, reached out to the death-metal drummer on Instagram and proposed the band-branded Brazilian blend Beheading & Brewing, Mazurkiewicz responded: “Sounds like what I was thinking about for years. Why not?”

Introduced on Halloween 2022 and emblazoned with album cover artist Vince Locke’s image of a disemboweled zombie drinking from a decapitated head, Cannibal Corpse coffee bags have been “selling really well” on tour and online, according to Mazurkiewicz. And it’s part of a new branding formula in heavy music: touring stars from GWAR (“espresso destructo”) to August Burns Red (“revival roast”) aligning themselves with gourmet blends, copious caffeine, black bags and scary artwork.

Trending on Billboard

“We thought it was going to be hell-raisers and beer drinkers shooting us down, and saying, ‘Coffee is stupid,’” says Tonsetic, whose Orlando-based company has also teamed with Ministry, Soulfly and Suicide Silence’s Chris Garza. “But metal fans in their 40s-plus, a lot of them are sober and not just drinking beer. They’re getting into other things, whether it’s coffee or tea.”

Rockers have teamed with coffee companies for years. Iggy Pop customized a blend with Portland’s Stumptown Coffee in 2019, and KISS (of course), Dropkick Murphys and members of Green Day have put out their own brands. While hard-rock bands have historically focused on branding bourbon and other alcohol products, in recent years, the estimated $458 billion coffee industry has come for metal, often through roasters with “death” in their names and skulls in their logos. “Like everything, after a couple happen, everyone starts doing it,” says Cory Brennan, founder of 5B Artist Management, whose clients Slipknot and Babymetal do not have their own blends. “The coffee-metal world is getting saturated, but there are some great ones.”

Metal-branded coffee deals vary. Several sources say they’re 50-50 revenue splits between artist and coffeemaker, but another source adds that expenses for a high-end brew can be as much as $12.50 per bag, so for a $20-25 price point, the coffeemaker might give a well-known band roughly $8, or $5 for a lesser-known artist. “If I do a collaboration, as long as I cover my costs, they get to have the profit,” says Carl Fricker, owner of 24-hour Brisbane, Australia, espresso house Death Before Decaf, which sells blends by rising metalcore stars August Burns Red and Sydney metal band Northlane. “A lot of the bands, as they’re getting on in years, they don’t go out and get smashed anymore. When they get into coffee, they get right into coffee.”

Cannibal Corpse Coffee

“It does really well,” says August Burns Red guitarist Brent Rambler. “We’re big coffee drinkers. At worst, I’ll get some great coffee out of it.” Adds vocalist Keith Wampler, whose band The Convalescence sells its Brazilian hazelnut through Grindcore Coffee Co.: “If you make it gory and put some skulls on it, it’s a little cooler than your average bag of coffee you grab at the store.” (The word “death” can be fraught for coffee companies in the U.S.; when Death by Decaf attempted to expand here, by trying to extend its Australian business name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, New York-based Death Wish Coffee Co. sued for infringement. Death by Decaf settled last December, and the owner says he spent $200,000 on legal fees.)

As for flavor, most metal stars leave aesthetic coffee details to the experts: “I’ve got three options that are pretty extreme in the caffeine count, and that seems to be a huge selling point for a lot of bands,” says Chad Petit, Grindcore’s owner.

But for Grindcore’s coffee bag with GWAR, displaying a cartoon of the band wielding a buzzsaw and giant hammer, the shock-metal veterans insisted on elaborate tastings and feedback. “This is a band that kills people on stage and cuts people’s heads off,” says GWAR co-manager Liam Pesce. “Obviously, they’re going to want the darkest roast and flavor imaginable.” Adds John Bambino, another GWAR co-manager: “I think there was mention of nutmeg in there.”

Ice Spice Unveils ‘Y2K!’ Tracklist, Featuring Travis Scott, Gunna & Central Cee

Ice Spice revealed all 10 songs that will be featured on her debut album Y2K! on Wednesday (July 17).

Scott previewed their collaboration during his London tour stop last week. The tracklist also includes previously released singles “Phat Butt,” “Think U The Sh-t (Fart)” and “Gimmie a Light.” “Think U The Sh-t (Fart)” became Ice’s highest-charting unaccompanied solo Billboard Hot 100 hit.

Her first full-length album comes a year and a half after her debut EP Like..?, which reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and featured her hit singles “Munch (Feelin’ U)” and “Princess Diana” (which later got a Hot 100 No. 4 remix with Nicki Minaj).

“I just feel so blessed and grateful to have the platform that I have, to share this music with all my fans,” she told Billboard‘s deputy director of R&B/hip-hop Carl Lamarre at the 2024 BET Awards red carpet.

Carlos Watson and his now-defunct startup, Ozy Media, have been found guilty of fraud.

Spotted on The Verge, Carlos Watson and Ozy Media were found guilty of fraud by a federal jury on Tuesday, per the New York Times reporting.

During the trial, the jury heard arguments from the government that Watson and Ozy Media misled investors by falsifying financial records, inflating audience numbers, and even completely making up business deals.

Things started well for Watson and business partner Samir Rao when they founded Ozy Media in 2013. The company launched with a newsletter, magazine, and an annual conference in New York City.

The company also received millions in investments while establishing high-profile partnerships before it all went to sh*t.

Per The Verge:

But things came to a halt when a 2021 article from New York Times media columnist Ben Smith reported that Rao impersonated a YouTube executive during a call with a Goldman Sachs banker about a potential $40 million investment. Rao pleaded guilty to related charges last year and is awaiting sentencing.

Additionally, prosecutors alleged that Watson lied to a prospective investor by saying that Google offered $600 million to take over the media startup. According to testimony from Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the company only considered investing $25 million as part of a potential plan to hire Watson. During the trial, Watson’s lawyers blamed Rao and Ozy Media’s employees for the fraudulent activity, NYT reports.

Speaking on the verdict, Breon Peace, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, broke down the fraud shenanigans Watson was up to.

“The jury found that Watson was a con man who told lie upon lie upon lie to deceive investors into buying stock in his company,” Peace said in a statement. “Watson invented phony financial figures and caused others to forge fake contracts and impersonate a media executive.”

Bruh.

Watson is looking at a lengthy 37 years in prison after being charged with conspiracy to commit securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.

Damn.
