Here’s What M. Night Shyamalan Has to Say About Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Sixth Sense’ Lyrics

M. Night Shyamalan’s breakout film The Sixth Sense — which became an instant pop-culture phenomenon when it was released in 1999 — finds itself in the conversation once again thanks to Kendrick Lamar.

The Compton rapper referenced the movie twice during his rap battle with Drake. First, on “Euphoria,” Kendrick raps, “Am I battlin’ ghosts or AI? N—as feelin’ like [Haley] Joel Osteen/ Funny, he was in a film called A.I./ And my Sixth Sense tellin’ me to off him.” He then begins his knockout blow “Not Like Us” with the movie’s iconic line: “I see dead people.”

Shyamalan appeared on Way Up With Angela Yee with his daughter Saleka, a singer and actress who’s making her acting debut in her father’s upcoming film Trap. When asked about Kendrick’s references, the filmmaker mentioned that they are already familiar with each other. “We kind of lightly know each other, and I did know [he was a fan],” Shyamalan said of Lamar. “He’s very gracious with me, and I love him.”

The director then revealed that someone in his office had first told him about the “Euphoria” reference, saying, “The first song ends with it,” Shyamalan recalled. “So someone in the office was like, ‘Oh, Kendrick just dropped something and it references one of your [movies].’ I was like, ‘Oh, cool.’ That was before everything blew up.”

M. Night Shyamalan’s other daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her directorial debut earlier this year with the release of horror film The Watchers in February.

Trap stars Josh Hartnett who plays a serial killer trapped at a Lady Raven (played by Saleka) concert with his daughter as authorities zero in on him.

Mick Management Doesn’t Just Represent Artists – It’s in the ‘World-Building’ Business

Given the multitude of distribution, streaming, promotion and marketing options and expectations, the business of becoming an established artist has turned into a seriously heavy lift for music acts and their managers. It’s one reason that Mick Management partner Jonathan Eshak says, “We don’t like to refer to ourselves as a management company anymore. We’re a music company. What we do more than anything else is brand development, artist development — world-building … We’re not just trying to keep the train on the tracks.”

Eshak and his partner, Michael McDonald, the company’s founder, got into management after immersing themselves in other sectors of the business. McDonald served as Dave Matthews Band’s tour manager before co-founding ATO Records in 2000 with Matthews; his manager, Red Light founder Coran Capshaw; and Chris Tetzeli, who went on to start 7S Management. He opened Mick the following year with John Mayer as one of his first clients and, in 2004, brought on data savant Eshak, who worked at Universal Music Publishing Group (and is the twin brother of Island Records co-CEO Justin Eshak). Jonathan became a partner in 2015.

With a staff of approximately 20 in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville, the duo has built a boutique firm — with its own record label, Mick Music, distributed by Believe — that represents Maggie Rogers, who released the critically praised Don’t Forget Me in April; Leon Bridges and Ray LaMontagne, who will both release albums later this year; The Walkmen and the solo career of their frontman, Hamilton Leithauser; Sharon Van Etten; Brett Dennen; Mandy Moore; My Morning Jacket; and The Marias.

Trending on Billboard

In a fragmented culture where “it’s very hard to find water-cooler moments,” according to Eshak, Mick’s team excels in building committed fan bases for a roster of individualistic artists who punch above their weight. “Artists all define success differently, and we understand that,” he adds. “We understand that there’s no one way of doing it anymore.” Their bespoke approach has resulted in some notable recent successes. In August, Rogers will embark on an international arena tour — including two shows at Madison Square Garden — though she has yet to achieve platinum sales with an album. In 2018, Leithauser began a five-night residency at the swank, 100-capacity Café Carlyle in New York, playing to “a few die-hard Walkmen fans and some fairly confused business travelers,” as Eshak puts it. This year, Leithauser sold out 12 nights, and the concept will be expanded with potential notable guests in 2025. And in June, The Marias celebrated the release of their new album, Submarine, with a secret pop-up show in downtown Los Angeles for approximately 5,000 fans. Eshak says 38,000 RSVP’d.

“What each of those things speak to is us finding interesting ways that the artists appreciate and superserve fan bases,” McDonald says.

Eshak saw his first concert in the late 1980s when George Strait and his band headlined the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the Houston Astrodome. “Thirty-plus years later, I was given this belt buckle by the rodeo when Leon Bridges headlined,” he says. “Truly a full-circle moment.”

Michael Buckner

What are the challenges of running an artist management company today versus 25 years ago?

Jonathan Eshak: When I first started with Michael, the sky had started to fall on the recorded-music business. This was the dawn of file-sharing companies like Napster and Kazaa. It was attractive to join Michael for that very reason. He was coming from building a world that was unique, not just to the ebbs and flows of the success of recorded music but also, how do you do things well in touring, merchandising, etc. He understood the creation of cultures, having worked with Dave Matthews and Coran.

Like the Grateful Dead, Matthews built a culture around his music.

Eshak: The Dead were the godfathers of that, and Mick’s ethos effectively starts there. While the challenges of the industry have evolved, the code of building an artist’s career remains the same. Which is, how do you focus on building a meaningful, long-lasting relationship with your fan base? We always say, “How do we make the artist the hit and not just the songs?” Music is just part of the cocktail. It’s also, how are we creating a dynamic of connectivity between the artist and the fan? How are we merchandising with them? How are we creating live shows that are meaningful, that evolve? There’s been a lot of lip service about artist development throughout the history of recorded music.

Michael McDonald: There were fewer breakthrough moments then, whereas today, because of the way technology and culture has evolved, it’s been democratized. The upside is that more people can succeed. The downside is there are fewer channels that create that star-turn moment.

Market From The Desk Of Story with Co-CEOs Michael McDonald and Jonathan Eshak of Mick Management

Eshak snagged this copy of the run-of-show for Saturday Night Live on Nov. 3, 2018, when Rogers appeared as musical guest. “It’s an honor each time our acts receive the invite,” he says.

Michael Buckner

Maggie Rogers seems to be a prime example of someone who has grown through connectivity with her fans.

Eshak: Maggie has understood the importance of connectivity from the start. She had this moment of Pharrell-ity, for lack of a better word, and instead of sitting back and working that, she understood the importance of going around the world and connecting with her fans face-to-face. To your point, she’s doing two nights in Madison Square Garden without a platinum record. Now, she obviously wants that and we want that for her, but people who are in are in. Even as she’s grown, the No. 1 thing on the checklist is, what are we doing for that audience?

What’s an example of that?

Eshak: When we were announcing the fall arena tour, we created pop-up shops in all the markets where people could line up to buy exclusive merchandise and, most importantly, reduced-price tickets. She was hearing from unsettled fans about ticket prices, so we tried to create solves. Fans could walk [into the pop-ups], point at a seat map and get a ticket that was going to cost less than if they paid for it online. Because of that, her fans understand that she sees them.

What questions do you ask before signing an artist?

McDonald: Most importantly, “Do we love the music? Do we feel like we can really grow this career?” And then, “Do they, will they, work hard?” We can’t want it more than they do. Some of this is research you can do before you meet the artist. Much of it we do through conversations, but there’s also data that’s crucial. We’ve had great success following our passion and guts, but to not use the tools at our disposal to help make those decisions would be foolish. Data is a great strength of Jonathan’s and why we’ve evolved in using it to inform decisions but never to unequivocally make decisions. If we did, we never would have signed some of the artists we have.

Why did you partner with Firebird?

McDonald: Firebird brings us resources that a company our size doesn’t have. There’s a data department and an analytics department of 10 to 15 people. There’s a finance department. There are all sorts of things that allow us to double down on the data and free us up to stay focused on our artists.

Market From The Desk Of Story with Co-CEOs Michael McDonald and Jonathan Eshak of Mick Management

McDonald celebrated “turning 50, 20 years of sobriety, raising nearly $500,000 for MusiCares and crossing something off my bucket list” by participating in the 2019 Iron Man World Championship. “It was an epic journey and one of the greatest days of my life,” he says.

Michael Buckner

What’s your pitch to artists you want to sign?

Eshak: It really comes down to having a shared code, so it’s important that we take the time to sit down with artists and say, “What are your life goals in addition to success in recorded music?” This is such a deep relationship that we talk all the time. We talk on weekends. We’re there with them for very big life stages, and it’s really important for us to have at least a common set of goals because it takes a lot out of everybody. Where we do a good job is acting almost as coaches now. It’s our job to be highly informed about how people are having success, distilling that and applying it to the artists that we represent, who are all quite different. In other words, how can we do this with you so that you remain true to yourself? We can’t do that for a thousand artists. It’s not the business model that Michael and I have elected to build.

You have a label.

Eshak: We have a label, and we’re working with some of our artists whose repertoires are returning to them and they need a mechanism to put music out. Some of it is also identifying artists that we like and helping them put music into the world.

Do you encourage your artists to own their masters?

McDonald: One hundred percent, whenever possible. Today, we would be hard pressed to pursue a deal that started with perpetuity music being somewhere else. There’s always a chance that it’s going to happen, and ultimately, it’s an artist’s decision. If they feel like this is their shot and they’re willing to give that up — absolutely. But one of the reasons we created the label was to say, “All right, let’s have an easy mechanism where we can control the deal terms. Let’s put music out and try to build on that. Then, if a great licensing option is not available today, let’s take a year and try to build something.” Ray LaMontagne’s album Trouble reverted to him in May after 20 years. So it’s not always a three-year or five-year reversion. But 20 years ago, we were able to take a long view and say, “Let’s take whatever percentage less today so at least there’s the option to sell those recordings X number of years later.”

Are your agreements with artists traditional percentage deals or partnerships?

McDonald: It varies. We have a lot of traditional deals, but any time we’re in true partnership, where we’re sharing [intellectual property] with an artist, it’s fully above board and clear with everyone’s legal teams. There is an evolving way that artists are going to get into business with different companies. We welcome that as things evolve.

A friend of McDonald had this box made for him. “It’s where I keep my most cherished and memorable notes and small keepsakes from artists, family and friends.”

Selena Gomez Shows Off Letter ‘B’ Necklace From Benny Blanco on 32nd Birthday

Selena Gomez celebrated her 32nd birthday with an ocean view and a sparkly letter “B” necklace from Benny Blanco.

On Monday (July 22), the singer-actress shared a few photos from her special festivities on Instagram. In one snap, she models a yellow babydoll dress while posing underneath a “Happy birthday Selena” balloon arrangement, with palm trees, sand and miles of blue water making up the background.

In two other pictures, Gomez shows off her romantic accessory — a silver charm around her neck that boasts her boyfriend’s initial. “Thank you so much for your birthday wishes!!” she captioned the post. “I’m very grateful and always thankful … 32.”

Blanco commented, borrowing a lyric from Jay-Z’s “Public Service Announcement”: “i got the hottest chick in the game wearing my chain.”

Earlier that day, the producer dedicated his own post to the Rare Beauty founder’s big day. “i used to play a teddy bear in ur music video and now i get to b urs in real life,” he wrote, sharing a photo from the pair’s “I Can’t Get Enough” music video shoot. “happy bday bb ! i love u !”

“I love you,” Gomez added in the replies alongside a teddy bear emoji.

Gomez closes out her 31st year with several new accolades under her belt, including her first-ever Emmy nomination in an acting category thanks to her performance on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. She also recently won best actress alongside her Emilia Pérez co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Pazat at the Cannes Film Festival.

In honor of her big day, however, the “Lose You to Love Me” singer is choosing to highlight just one specific endeavor: her Rare Impact Fund, which she says has raised $15 million to date for youth mental health initiatives all over the world.

“As always, for my birthday this year I would be so grateful if you were able to donate to the Rare Impact Fund,” she wrote on Instagram. “Please visit RareImpactFund.org to learn more and to donate. No amount is too small, and this is the biggest gift you could ever give me. Love you all!”

All the Musicians Supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election

Ariana Grande, Cardi B, John Legend and more have all spoken in favor of the VP’s bid.

After weeks of mounting pressure from fellow Democrats to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, sitting POTUS Joe Biden announced that he was doing just that — shortly after which he endorsed his own vice president, Kamala Harris, to take on the role instead.

In the hours that followed, countless party members, public figures and voters alike provided an outpouring of support for the attorney-turned-politician’s last-minute campaign, which raised more than $50 million in fundraising less than a day after it launched. “On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country,” Harris wrote in a public response to the news. “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”

So, too, did musicians get on board. Following a noticeable and well-documented drought in celebrities endorsing Biden for a second term in the early months of 2024, many were suddenly quick to publicly back Harris as soon as she took the reins. Everyone from Ariana Grande to Cardi B and John Legend shared their approval of the VP’s candidacy, while Charli XCX notably declared online: “Kamala IS brat.”

More stars are sure to throw their hats in the ring as election day draws closer, while others — Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, etc. — will likely continue to cheer on former president Donald Trump as the Republican party’s nominee. Billboard will update this list as more endorsements roll in, but for now, keep reading to see which artists and other music-world figures have expressed their support of Kamala Harris’ bid for the White House so far below.

Additionally, YG Entertainment founder Yang Hyun Suk revealed in a video that the popular K-pop girl group will perform a number of shows to celebrate their 15th anniversary. Yang explained that the 2NE1 tour will begin in Seoul, South Korea, in October, before heading to Osaka, Japan, in November and Tokyo, Japan, in December. He revealed that the tour would continue throughout 2025, with further locations yet to be revealed.

Since surging to popularity with their 2009 debut single “Fire” and becoming known worldwide for their swaggering girl power anthem “I’m the Best,” 2NE1 — consisting of members Park Bom, Sandara Park, CL and Minzy — became one of K-pop’s most iconic girl groups. The group disbanded in 2016 following a year-long hiatus and Minzy’s departure. They unveiled their fitting final song, “Goodbye,” in 2017. In 2022,CL reunited the group at Coachella, marking the first time the girls performed on-stage together since 2015.

Andrea Bocelli Celebrates 30 Years in Music With Ed Sheeran, Will Smith & More at Italy’s Teatro del Silenzio

If the evening of July 17 in Lajatico, Tuscany, celebrating 30 years of Andrea Bocelli‘s career were a film, it would be an American blockbuster. In the Teatro del Silenzio (“Theater of Science”), a fairytale place among the Tuscan hills that only opens once a year and is in its 19th edition, there were big names as guests, an amazing stage, and the most loved Italian songs in the world, including “O Sole Mio” and “Funiculì Funiculà.”

“I tried not to be overwhelmed by emotions,” Bocelli said the next day. “I tried to express them, to convey them through each song, each duet, while maintaining the cold blood necessary to complete this bet, as beautiful as it is large, ambitious and – I can say it now – also a little risky, given the amount of songs, the lineup, the many people involved.”

A guest list like this onstage hadn’t been seen since the times of “Pavarotti and Friends.” In fact, for the first time Bocelli virtually duetted with the image of Luciano Pavarotti, who appeared in a video behind him for “Notte ‘e Piscatore.”

Trending on Billboard

At “Andrea Bocelli 30 – The Celebration,” the percentage of foreigners was close to 90% of the 12,000 present every evening (July 15, 17 and 19), as explained by Veronica Berti, Bocelli’s wife and organizer of the event. Most of the visitors come from the United States, but also from Congo, Peru, Spain and South America. In many cases these are people who return to the Teatro del Silenzio every year.

Bocelli himself sought the reason for this feeling of affection toward him. “I believe that it is an audience that still knows how to get excited and frankly express its feelings, that is capable of having fun, of being moved, as well as enjoying good music. Every time I go onstage, what I want most is to give back to those present a bit of positivity and serenity, lighting a smile in them, a moment of tenderness. When this impulse of mine is seized, I am happy. Just as I am happy that many return to the Teatro del Silenzio year after year, undertaking long journeys to experience the concert and also what Italy is able to express, from art to cuisine. It is that ‘culture of beauty’ that we sometimes underestimate, but which the whole world loves.”

One of the main reasons that pushed Bocelli to organize such an event in his hometown is to be able to show artists of that level to his fellow citizens. It’s not every day you see José Carreras, Placido Domingo, Ed Sheeran, Lang Lang, Laura Pausini, Tiziano Ferro, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Russell Crowe and Zucchero on the same stage.

The evening of July 17 was a great celebration for all those who love Italy and its music, not just that of Andrea Bocelli. “I also thought of my parents, to whose memory I dedicated the first edition of the Teatro del Silenzio,” said Bocelli. “I like to think that every note that rose between those hills that they loved so much reached them in heaven.”

The sky was cobalt blue, the moon was in the background, the temperature was perfect as the sun went down. The large orchestra took its place. A child entered the scene and started a record player playing “O Sole Mio” (from Bocelli’s live album Night in Central Park). Bocelli descended from a high silver staircase in the center of the stage, which seemed to point to the sky, starting the show.

The first part had an operatic flavor, apart from the presence of Zucchero, who came onstage already in the fourth piece with “Miserere.” Then came two protagonists of opera: Placido Domingo and José Carreras. Also worth mentioning are the baritone Franco Vassallo and the soprano Nadine Sierra, who gave a very touching moment with “Vicino a Te S’acqueta,” from the opera Andrea Chenier. Meanwhile, the 500 drones above the heads of the audience reproduced a moving starry sky and the staircase became a triangle on which the videos were projected.

The second part of the evening was no less sumptuous. Kicking things off was none other than Will Smith, who performed the lyrics to “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” written by Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein at the end of World War II with music by Richard Rodgers.

Then Lang Lang arrived. The Chinese pianist played “Ritual Fire Dance,” leaving everyone astonished. Then it was the moment of Virginia, Bocelli’s daughter, who is only 12 years old and had already shown a great love for music. She sang “You Raise Me Up,” a title that couldn’t be more appropriate.

Another exceptional guest took to the stage, a great friend of the host, Laura Pausini. He sat on the piano to accompany Pausini for Charles Aznavour’s “She.” In the end, Pausini wanted to say how all this reminded her of her beginnings at the piano bar, just like Bocelli himself. “At the time we were happy to sing for a few people, as much as we are now to be in front of such a large audience,” she said.

After her, it was Russell Crowe’s turn, who has the perfect vocal timbre and attitude to sing Leonard Cohen’s “Take This Waltz” alone. Then it was the Bocelli brothers’ turn. Matteo sang his “Honesty” accompanied by Amos on the piano.

Bocelli then introduced the next international guest. “One day a guy who was already quite famous and already playing stadiums came to me,” he says. “We recorded a song together, but he let me know that my part wasn’t right. He asked me to do it again, and he was right! That song now has half a billion views on YouTube.” Ed Sheeran came onstage, and together they sang “Perfect Symphony.”

The surprises didn’t end, because Johnny Depp took to the stage as guitarist. He and Bocelli performed a cover of “En Aranjuez con Tu Amor” in honor of their late friend Jeff Beck, who died last year; all three played it together in 2020. At the end of the performance, Johnny Depp said how important it was to play that piece, which made you imagine that Jeff was there with them.

Finally, Laura Pausini returned to the stage, this time in a duet with Tiziano Ferro on “Invece No.”

The three evenings of “Andrea Bocelli 30 – The Celebration” will become a film with the same title, directed by Grammy nominee and Emmy Award winner Sam Wrench.

The album Duets (Decca Records / Sugar Music) will be released Oct. 25 and will bring together many of the collaborations of the last three decades, but also new songs, for a total of 32 tracks. The album will feature duets with Ed Sheeran, Céline Dion, Sarah Brightman, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez, Giorgia and Luciano Pavarotti, and new duets recorded specifically for this album with Shania Twain, Chris Stapleton, Gwen Stefani, Marc Anthony, Karol G , Sofia Carson, Lauren Daigle, Elisa, Matteo Bocelli and Hans Zimmer.

At the end of the year, the documentary Andrea Bocelli: Why I Believe will also be released, telling his story from his beginnings in piano bars until today. In the winter, Bocelli will be on tour in North America, for 10 dates in San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Uncasville and Miami, as well as returning to New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden York for two concerts. The tour will begin in San Diego on Nov. 4 and conclude in Miami on Dec. 22.

78-Year-Old Donald Trump Is Shook Over Biden Dropping Out, Xitter Notices

Donald Trump’s social media posts after President Joe Biden’s decision not to run for re-election suggest that he’s worried.
Donald Trump’s social media reactions in the wake of President Joe Biden dropping out of the race for president on Sunday (July 21) have garnered heavy notice. So much so that it has led many to believe that he’s worried about the prospects of facing off against Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden endorsed shortly after announcing his decision. In his first public statement afterward with CNN, Trump said of Biden: “He is the worst president in the history of our country. He goes down as the single worst president by far in the history of our country.” He also claimed, according to Kaitlan Collins, Harris would be easier to beat.

It wasn’t too long after that, however, that Trump took to his Truth Social platform and fired off a series of posts aimed toward “Crooked Joe Biden” first writing that Biden “only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement.” Trump also hinted at blowing off the presidential debate set for September on ABC, claiming that “George Slopadopolus” should be replaced by a debate on Fox News.

On Monday morning (July 22), Trump’s Truth Social posts fired up again at 6:19 A.M., furthering a conspiracy that President Biden does not have COVID-19 and joking about Biden waking up and not realizing he dropped out. He would also attack South Carolina Representative James Clyburn and rant about Special Counsel Jack Smith, writing that “All of these Biden/Harris cases against me are a Weaponization of Justice against their Political Opponent, Me” without directly addressing Vice President Harris until a post made in the early afternoon where he wrote: “Joe Biden will go down as the Worst President in the history of the United States. KAMALA, OUR HORRIBLE & INCOMPETENT BORDER CZAR, WILL BE WORSE!”

Those observing Trump’s posts also called out the fact that with Biden out of the race, there should be more questions about Trump’s age and mental stability than there were before. Democratic Representative Ted Lieu said as much in a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “Trump’s cognitive decline is readily apparent. He makes incoherent rants at his rallies. He is the oldest person ever running for President. Trump should pass the torch and withdraw.”

Take a look at some of the responses to Trump’s rambling on social media below.

The 10 Best Moments of Tomorrowland 2024

This past weekend, Tomorrowland 2024 kicked off its 20th anniversary in arguably one of its most epic opening weekends yet. Over its three days, the dance festival in Boom, Belgium welcomed roughly 400,000 festival goers, who came from around the world and arrived decked out in eye-catching and photo-worthy costumes and summer attire. With temperatures soaring over the weekend, these types of outfits were essential.

July 19-21 marked the first weekend of Tomorrowland 2024, along with some of the hottest temperatures the festival has experienced, with the daily heat climbing up to 90 degrees, compared to the average 70-degree temps. Hot weather couldn’t stop the party, though, as DJs brought their A-game with playlists filled with crowd-rousing beat drops, enthusiastic calls for attendees to put their hands in the air and an overall sense of community.

Tomorrowland’s stages have always been feats of technology and whimsy, and 2024 was no exception. The festival’s 20th birthday wasn’t just a milestone moment for the event itself, but a celebration of life — which was also revealed to be the theme for this year, with multiple elements of the event taking inspiration from this idea.

With the site clocking it at roughly 9,000 acres, walking from stage to stage is a full-on experience where one encounters art, fellow attendees, performers and delicious food booths ready to fuel you up for the next dance session. Of course, the who’s who of the electronic music world were on site for the event, with hundreds of DJs including Swedish House Mafia, Tale of Us, Alesso, Amelie Lens, Bonobo, Dom Dolla, The Blessed Madonna, REZZ and Deadmau5 performing as REZZMAU5, David Guetta, Solomun b2b Four Tet, Eliza Rose and many others all playing over the weekend.

From mesmerizing stages to surprise guest appearances — and ahead of the second weekend of the festival starting this Friday, July 26 — below are all the moments from Tomorrowland 2024 we won’t be forgetting any time soon.
