Stray Kids & Jimin Debut at Nos. 1 & 2 on Billboard 200 — K-Pop Has Top Two Albums for First Time

K-pop superstars Stray Kids and Jimin make a splash atop the Billboard 200 (dated Aug. 3), as the acts’ latest albums, ATE and MUSE, debut at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. In turn, it marks the first time the top two on the Billboard 200 are K-pop (Korean pop) albums.

Further, ATE lands Stray Kids their fifth No. 1 in a row, making the act the first group ever to debut at No. 1 with their first five charting albums. They previously opened atop the chart with ODDINARY, MAXIDENT (both in 2022), ROCK-STAR and 5-STAR (both in 2023).

The only other artist to debut at No. 1 with its first five chart entries was rapper DMX in 1998-2003 with It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot (1998), Flesh of My Flesh Blood of My Blood (1999), …And Then There Was X (2000), The Great Depression (2001) and Grand Champ (2003).

ATE arrives with 232,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 25, according to Luminate. That’s the largest week of 2024 for any K-pop album, and the sixth-biggest debut for any album this year. MUSE moves in with 96,000 units, and gives BTS member Jimin his second solo album to reach No. 2 (after last year’s FACE).

Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, the Twisters soundtrack debuts at No. 7 with 57,000 equivalent album units earned. The country music-heavy album is the first soundtrack to reach the top 10 in 2024, and it does so with the year’s biggest week, by units earned, for any soundtrack. Further, it’s the first country soundtrack from a theatrical film to reach the top 10 in over a decade.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Aug. 3, 2024-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on July 30. Of ATE’s 232,000 first-week units, album sales comprise 218,000, SEA units comprise 13,000 (equaling 19.05 million on-demand streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise 1,000. With 218,000 copies sold, ATE is the top-selling album of the week, debuting at No. 1 on Top Album Sales. It also nets the largest sales week for any K-pop album this year and 2024’s second-largest sales week for any album of any genre (trailing only the 1.91-million sales debut of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department). ATE’s sales were bolstered by its availability across 11 different CD variants, all containing collectible items like photocards, stickers and posters (some of which was randomized), including signed editions, as well as variants exclusive to Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart.

As ATE is mostly in the Korean language, it is the 25th mostly non-English-language album to hit No. 1, and the second of 2024. On the March 9-dated chart, TWICE’s With YOU-th garnered the group its first leader when it opened at No. 1. Of the 25 mostly non-English-language albums to reach No. 1, 16 are mostly Korean, five mostly (or all) Spanish, one mostly Italian, one entirely French, and two mostly a blend of Spanish, Italian and French. Of the 25 almost all non-English-language albums to reach No. 1, 21 have topped the chart since 2018 (the year that K-pop superstars BTS scored their first of six No. 1s, with the chart’s first Korean-language No. 1s). Further, of the 16 K-pop albums that have reached No. 1, Stray Kids and BTS account for 11 (five and six, respectively).

Speaking of BTS, the group’s Jimin sees his latest solo project MUSE bow at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 96,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 74,000 (aided by its availability across nine CD variants, containing collectible posters, photocards and stickers; inclusive of exclusive editions sold at Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart), SEA units comprise 15,000 and TEA units comprise 7,000. In 2023, Jimin’s first solo charting set, FACE, debuted and peaked at No. 2.

MUSE was preceded by the Billboard Hot 100-charting “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” (with Loco), which debuted at No. 88 on the July 13-dated list.

Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) falls to No. 3 in its second week with 79,000 equivalent album units earned (down 72%) after debuting at No. 1 a week ago. Swift’s former leader The Tortured Poets Department is a non-mover at No. 4 with 74,000 units (down 9%); Zach Bryan’s The Great American Bar Scene slips 3-5 with 71,000 (down 19%); and Morgan Wallen’s chart-topping One Thing at a Time dips 5-6 with 65,000 (down 2%).

Twisters: The Album debuts at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with 57,000 equivalent album units earned — marking the first soundtrack the reach the top 10 in 2024 and the year’s biggest week, by units, for any soundtrack. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 40,000 (equaling 52.85 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 29 songs), album sales comprise 14,000 (it was available to purchase a digital download, CD and in three vinyl variants) and TEA units comprise 3,000.

The country music-heavy project is the companion album to the film Twisters, which blew into U.S. movie theaters on July 19. The film is a standalone sequel to 1996’s Twister, which boasted a rock-focused soundtrack (peaking at No. 28 on the Billboard 200).

The Twisters album features a wealth of new original material from country stars including Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Miranda Lambert and Lainey Wilson, and was preceded by three charting hits on the Hot Country Songs chart (Combs’ “Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma,” Bailey Zimmerman’s “Hell or High Water” and Tyler Childers’ “Song While You’re Away”). Twenty of the album’s 29 songs appear in the movie, and over half of the album’s tracks were released over the course of the 10 weeks leading up to the set’s drop on July 19.

Twisters is the first country soundtrack to reach the top 10 since the Jan. 4, 2014-dated chart, when The Robertsons’ TV soundtrack Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas closed out its last week in the top 10, having peaked at No. 3 the previous November. As for country soundtracks to theatrical films, like Twisters, the last to reach the top 10 was Country Strong, which peaked at No. 6 on the Jan. 29, 2011, chart. The last country soundtrack from a theatrical film to debut in the top 10, like Twisters, was Hannah Montana: The Movie, which bowed at No. 2 on the April 11, 2009, chart, later reaching No. 1 on the May 2 list. (Soundtrack and country albums are defined as those that are eligible for, or have charted on, Billboard’s Soundtracks and Top Country Albums charts, respectively.)

Closing out the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 is Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (falling 7-8 with 54,000 equivalent album units; up less than 1%), Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft (6-9 with nearly 54,000; down 5%), and Noah Kahan’s Stick Season (holding at No. 10 with 43,000; up 10%).

Sinead O’Connor’s Exact Cause of Death Revealed One Year After Her Death

Sinead O’Connor‘s official cause of death has been revealed one year after her passing.

The “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer’s death certificate lists that she died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, the Irish Independent reported on Saturday (July 27).

The death certificate specifically noted that O’Connor’s passing was a result of “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection,” the publication said.

The certificate was reportedly registered by the late Grammy winner’s husband, John Reynolds, in London on Wednesday (July 24).

O’Connor died at 56 in her London home on July 26, 2023, where authorities said she was found “unresponsive.” The next day the police announced that they were not treating her passing as suspicious and had handed the investigation over to the coroner’s office to determine the cause of death.

In January, London’s Southwark Coroners Court announced that O’Connor died of natural causes and that the coroner had “therefore ceased their involvement in her death.”

At the time of her death, O’Connor’s family said, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

The Irish singer struggled with mental illness throughout her life, including PTSD, depression and suicidal tendencies. In 2022, her 17-year-old son Shane died by apparent suicide. She is survived by three children, including daugher Roisin Waters, aged 28.

O’Connor released her bracing debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987, featuring the alt radio hits “Mandinka” and “I Want Your (Hands On Me),” followed by her breakthrough 1990 masterpiece, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. The sophomore effort featured her global breakthrough hit, the No. 1 Prince-written smash “Nothing Compares 2 U,” as well as such enduring favorites as “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and the hypnotic “I Am Stretched on Your Grave.”

Grupo Frontera’s latest single “Ángel,” featuring Romeo Santos, has topped this week’s new music Latin poll.

In a poll published on Friday (July 26) — in support of the weekly New Music Latin roundup and playlist, curated by Billboard Latin and Billboard Español editors — music fans voted for the Texas-based group and Dominican artist’s first collaborative effort as their favorite music release of the week.

“Ángel” generated over 42% of the votes, beating out other new releases that dropped that week, including Omar Courtz and Anuel AA’s “Serio Con Ese Q” and Piso 21 and Ozuna’s “Fichaje del Año.”

Coming in second place as a fan favorite was Fuerza Regida’s new album, Pero No Te Enamores, which boasted more than 21% of the votes.

Seven People Killed in Stampede at Concert in Congo’s Capital

Seven people were killed and many others were injured during a stampede at a music concert in Congo’s capital Saturday (July 27), authorities said.

The stampede occurred at the 80,000-capacity Stade des Martyrs stadium in the heart of Kinshasa where Mike Kalambayi, a popular Congolese gospel singer, was performing, Kinshasa Gov. Daniel Bumba said.

State television RTNC said seven people were killed in the chaos and some of those injured were admitted to intensive care. Among those who died was a 10-year-old child, according to local media, the BBC reports.

Authorities did not comment on what caused the stampede, saying an investigation into the incident was underway. However, the local music management company that organized the event said the chaos erupted when “the security services tried to neutralize some troublemakers.”

An estimated 30,000 people attended the concert, which featured several other musicians and pastors, the management company Maajabu Gospel said in a statement.

Videos that appeared to be from the scene and broadcast of the event showed large crowds gathered outside the stadium in front of barricades as they waited to enter. Inside, people could be seen rushing to the center stage.

Stade des Martyrs, which is said to be one of the largest stadiums in Africa, is closed until further notice, according to the BBC.

Congo has witnessed such stampedes in past years, often blamed on poor crowd control measures such as excessive use of force. Eleven people died in a similar crush at the same stadium last October during a music concert.

DJ Polo, born Thomas E. Pough, of Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo fame has passed away.

Word of DJ Polo’s untimely passing began circulating online on July 27. Fellow rap pioneer Eric B took to social media to pay his condolences. “My brother DJ POLO we had some great times you will never be forgotten GODS speed,” wrote Eric B as a caption to a photo of DJ Polo.

No cause of death has been reported at this time.

The story goes that Kool G. Rap and DJ Polo were invited by the late Mr. Magic and Marley Marl to create a demo in their studio. The result was “It’s A Demo,” which left Marley and Magic so impressed that G. Rap and Polo were made part of the Juice Crew, which included Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie and more. “It’s A Demo” would appear on Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo’s debut album, Road To The Riches, in 1989, which also featured classic cuts like the title track, “Men At Work” and “Poison.” The duo would release two more albums—1990’s Wanted: Dead or Alive and 1992’s Live And Let Die—before parting ways.

Polo would drop his own solo project, Polo’s Playhouse, in 1998.

Taylor Swift Reacts to ‘…Ready for It?’ Olympics Ad on NBC: ‘Ready to Scream at My TV Cheering for These Athletes’

Taylor Swift‘s live version of “…Ready for It?” from The Eras Tour is the soundtrack to a new NBC commercial promoting the network’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Swift shared the ad Saturday night (July 27) on Instagram, following her concert at Olympiastadion in Munich, Germany, where she’s performing twice this weekend.

“So ready to scream at my tv cheering for these athletes,” she wrote in an Instagram Story, adding a gold medal emoji to her comment while sharing a reel of the “…Ready for It?” promo.

“Baby Let The Games Begin. #WeAreReadyForIt, @taylorswift. Primetime in Paris: 8/7c on NBC and Peacock #ParisOlympics,” the official NBC Olympics account wrote about the ad themed to Swift’s bold Reputation album opener.

The spot features U.S. Olympic stars including Noah Lyles, LeBron James, Carissa Moore, Jagger Eaton and more, with Simone Biles appearing at the end of the ad for the 2024 Olympics on NBC.

The 2024 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony featured performances from Lady Gaga and Celine Dion, as well as a pre-recorded cameo from Beyoncé, who introduced Team USA in Friday’s primetime coverage.

Nick Jonas Compares Disney Channel Games to ‘Love Island’ on Crack, Sings Ode to ‘Jorts’ With Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon

Nick Jonas remembers the “Disney Games” in a very specific way: “like Love Island on crack.”

Jonas, who tells Jimmy Fallon he skipped the 2024 Summer Olympics opening ceremony to visit The Tonight Show, appeared on NBC’s late-night show Friday, July 26. (The singer mentioned plans to head to Paris for the games later on, with friend/designer Ralph Lauren, who dressed him for his wedding with Priyanka Chopra in 2018.)

“You never competed in the Olympics,” Fallon pointed out. “You did, however, compete in the Disney Games.”

“What do you remember about this time of your life?” the host asked the Jonas Brother.

“So much hair,” joked Jonas, looking at a photo circa his youthful Disney star days.

“For those that don’t know,” Jonas explained, “the Disney Channel Games were basically the Olympics, but they would bring in 100ish Disney Channel stars from all over the world and make us compete in silly games.”

Then he revealed where the real fun came in: “What it really was, was like Love Island on crack. They would put a bunch of teenagers in the Disney park after hours and just say, ‘Let’s see what happens.’”

Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show, with musical guest Ice Spice performing “Did It First/Think U The Shit (Fart),” also had a bonus: a pre-taped segment starring Will Ferrell, Nick Jonas and Jimmy Fallon performing a song about jorts, a sweet summer staple for the trio.

In the musical sketch about jorts, Fallon and Ferrell bring the basics — “I’m in my jorts/ I’m in my jort shorts/ I’m in in my jorts/ Jean shorts/ That means jorts” — and Jonas jumps in to jazz things up.

“I wear my jorts every day of the week/ They start at my hips and they end at my knees/ And if you see me you’ll know that I’m in ‘em/ They’re jorts and they’re short and they’re totally denim,” he sings on the spot, vying to join the jorts troupe.

2024 Summer Olympics Schedule: Basketball, Gymnastics & More

The Olympic games will feature archery, artistic swimming, badminton, basketball, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, breakdancing, canoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, rhythmic gymnastics, rowing, rugby, sailing, shooting, skateboarding, soccer, sport climbing, surfing, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, trampoline, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling.

Simone Biles, Shakari Richardson, Katie Ledecky, LeBron James, Steph Curry and other star athletes will be competing for Team USA this year. If you want to catch Team USA Gymnastics featuring Biles, Jade Cary, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee and Hezly Rivera, competitions start on Sunday, July 28.

The women’s gymnastics qualifications will be held from 3:30 a.m.-4:30 a.m ET on Sunday. The men’s gymnastics round was held on Saturday.

The men’s team final is scheduled for Monday, July 29, followed by the women’s final on Tuesday, July 30. The all-around finals for the men’s team will be on Wednesday, July 31, and women’s all-around finals will be on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Men’s basketball kicks off on Saturday with group stage matchups between Australia vs. Spain, France vs. Brazil, Greece vs. Canada and Germany vs. Japan.  

On Sunday, Team USA will face off against Serbia in men’s basketball, while South Sudan will face Puerto Rico in the men’s group phase. Team USA men’s basketball returns to the court on July 31 against South Sudan.

Women’s basketball also starts on Sunday with Spain vs. China and Serbia vs. Puerto Rico. Team USA will play Japan on July 29 and Belgium on Aug. 1

Men’s and women’s first-round tennis matches will be held on Saturday and Sunday. The first, second and third round matches are scheduled for July 29-30. The men’s singles third round, women’s singles quarterfinals, men’s doubles semifinals, women’s doubles quarterfinals and mixed doubles quarterfinals are on July 31. The men’s singles quarterfinals, women’s singles semifinals, women’s doubles semifinals and mixed doubles semifinals are on Aug. 1.

Swimming starts Saturday and will be held each day through Aug. 4. The women’s 10K open water finals are slated for Aug. 8. The men’s 10K open water finals will be on Aug. 9.

Olympics track and field competitions will be held from Aug. 1-11.
