In Canada: Jessie Reyez to Be Honored at Women in Music; SiR Show Cancellation at Drake-Backed Venue Stirs Speculation

A true champion for positive change in music will be honored at Billboard Canada Women in Music in Toronto on Sept. 7, 2024.

Jessie Reyez will accept the Trailblazer Award, which is given to a female artist who acts as a music industry pioneer by using her platform to spotlight unheard voices and break ground for future generations of performers.

The Canadian singer straddles the worlds of hip-hop, R&B and pop and has proven to be a big star both on and off stage. She’s hit the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Canadian Hot 100 multiple times, while also appearing on a number of other charts in genres including Latin, R&B and dance. She’s collaborated and toured with artists from Billie Eilish to Eminem to Big Sean to Sam Smith. She’s been a hitmaker behind the scenes, too, penning songs for artists including Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa.

On and offstage, Reyez has used her platform to speak up against systemic inequality — from lack of diversity on the staff of major labels to immigration issues to LGBTSQ+ rights.

Reyez was previously honored with the Impact Award at Billboard Women in Music in 2020, accepting during the virtual ceremony while speaking about the ways she’s had to break through barriers as a woman in music.

“I’ve always said that being born a woman on this earth is like being born walking uphill,” she said. “There are so many burdens and bags that we carry and manage to do so with grace.”

Previous winners of the Trailblazer Award include Phoebe Bridgers, Kesha and Janelle Monae. Reyez will accept the award at the first edition of Billboard Women in Music in Canada.

The ceremony will also include guest of honor Alanis Morissette, who will win the Icon Award. The star-studded event will additionally celebrate previously announced honourees Allison Russell, LU Kala, The Beaches and more yet-to-be-announced.

SiR’s Concert is Cancelled in Toronto, Fuelling Speculation about Drake’s Involvement

Another last-minute concert cancellation at History in Toronto is causing online speculation related to Drake‘s feud with Kendrick Lamar.

Los Angeles R&B singer SiR was set to perform at the venue on July 30 but announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the show has been canceled. The singer stated that the venue canceled the event even though, he says, the show was sold out. “Not sure why,” he tweeted.

ScHoolboy Q reacted with laughter to the news; the rapper’s July show at History was canceled earlier this month with no reason given, and at the time he took to the same platform to imply it was because of the feud between Lamar and Drake. History is a collaboration between Drake and Live Nation.

“CANADIAN POLICE DONT WANT NOBODY FROM TDE PERFORMING,” ScHoolboy wrote after his show’s cancellation. A spokesperson from the Toronto Police Service said it had no part in the decision to cancel the concert.

ScHoolboy Q and Lamar are former labelmates on Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), which Lamar left last year, as well as former members of the group Black Hippy. SiR is also on the label and has collaborated with Lamar.

The SiR cancellation follows another Drake-related incident at History on Monday night (July 29). DJ Scheme, opening for Ski Mask The Slump God, dropped Lamar’s Drake diss track “Not Like Us” at the venue and shared a clip of the crowd singing along at full volume.

ScHoolboy Q, meanwhile, made a not-so-cryptic post on X shortly after, which simply read: “HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH ?.” His followers interpreted it as a reaction to the “Not Like Us” needle drop. – Rosie Long Decter

Céline Dion Sees Global Spike in Streams After Soaring Olympics Comeback

It’s all coming back to her now: Listeners are streaming Céline Dion in big numbers following a triumphant comeback performance.

The French Canadian superstar performed from the Eiffel Tower on July 26 as part of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Dion sang French icon Edith Piaf‘s “L’Hymne à l’amour,” making an emotional and highly-anticipated return to the stage amidst a battle with Stiff Person Syndrome.

Viewers tuned in across the globe to see Dion’s performance, and they clearly want more. Her global Spotify listenership has jumped 36% since the performance, with a 64% jump in France.

Dion isn’t the only artist whose catalogue is benefitting from the performance. The original recording of “L’Hymne à l’amour” by Piaf saw a 317% jump in Spotify streams in the day after the opening ceremony.

The big bump in listeners indicates that the public is ready and waiting for Dion’s return. Though she hasn’t confirmed a follow-up performance, there have been rumours of a potential Las Vegas show on the horizon.

The performance also followed the June release of a documentary chronicling Dion’s experiences with Stiff Person Syndrome, I Am: Céline Dion.

She shared a message on Instagram after the performance for the athletes in Paris: “stay focused, keep going, my heart is with you!” After everything she’s been through, her heart goes on. – RLD

Did A$AP Rocky Take Another Shot At Drake On New Track “HIJACK”?

Drake may be done going back and forth with Kendrick Lamar, but it seems like A$AP Rocky isn’t letting the King of the North off the hook that easily for speaking sideways about his queen, Rihanna.

Months after A$AP Rocky took a subliminal shot at Drake on Kid Cudi’s “WOW,” the Harlem rapper is at it again as he throws another indirect dart at the Canadian crooner for his transgressions on his 2023 song, “Fear Of Heights.” In a newly released cut dubbed, “HIJACK,” Rocky seems to continue to rub his relationship with Rihanna in his ops’ face with some bars saying, “These n*ggas want my wife bad, the people want my next track.”

While people may make of that what they want, Hot 97’s DJ Kast One recently attended a listening event for A$AP Rocky’s next album, Don’t Be Dumb, and according to HipHopDX, Pretty Flacko got a little something for Drizzy in the chamber ready to go.

Per HipHopDX:

After attending a listening event for the album, Kast One said on air: “I heard A$AP Rocky definitely addressing a lot of the main topics that are happening out there right now. Let’s just say the list keeps going on strong.”

Host Ebro Darden then asked whether “Rocky is still on Drake’s list,” with the DJ responding: “Oh, he’s gonna be cemented on the list after this.”

Whether Rocky’s shots at Drake are more subliminal bars or direct darts at the embattled Canadian king remains to be seen, but one has to wonder if Drake would even entertain another battle so soon after getting beaten, battered and bruised by the likes of Kung-Fu Kenny.

Check out “HIJACK” below, and let us know if A$AP Rocky vs. Drake is a battle you’d like to see, or if the two men should just let things go and move on with their lives.

Simone Biles Jabs Donald Trump After Winning 6th Gold Medal, Says “I Love My Black Job”

Artistic Gymnastics - Olympic Games Paris 2024: Day 6

Simone Biles, who already secured her position as the most decorated gymnast of all time, won her second gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris this week. After a glowing reply on X from Ricky Davila, Simone Biles took a jab at Donald Trump and the former president’s weird “Black jobs” quip.

Ricky Davila shared an X reply Friday morning (July 2) featuring images of Simone Biles showing off her latest gold medal at the Paris Games. Davilla, using Trump’s “Black jobs” quote, wrote in the caption, “Simone Biles being the GOAT, winning Gold medals and dominating gymnastics is her black job.”

Biles caught wind of Davila’s reply, quoting and resharing while writing in the caption, “I love my Black job.”

Some might recall that Trump recently debated President Joe Biden in June on the CNN network, where he suggested migrants were crossing the border and taking “Black jobs” as a means to attract the Black voting bloc, but the tactic backfired explosively by way of social media lampooning Trump’s words.

Further, during an appearance at the 2024 NABJ Convention and Job Fair in Chicago, Trump once more used the “Black jobs” bogeyman to stoke fears of Black voters as he looks primed to take on presumptive Democratic Party nominee Vice President Kamala Harris this fall.”I will tell you that coming from the border, are millions and millions of people that happen to be taking Black jobs,” Trump said.

Trump also sparked another social media trend during the same NABJ appearance by suggesting that Vice President Harris suddenly turned Black.

“She was always of Indian heritage and she was promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black?” Trump said, trying to seize on a thin wave of poorly researched assumptions that have grown loud but ultimately weak legs on social media.

Danny Ocean Calls on Artists to Unite for Venezuela: ‘It’s Good Against Evil’

As tension continues in Venezuela following the presidential elections on Sunday (July 28), when the Venezuelan electoral authority declared Nicolás Maduro the winner and the opposition denounced irregularities in the count and claimed that their candidate Edmundo González had won with almost 70% of the votes, Venezuelan and foreign artists have spoken out about the difficult situation in the South American country.

Whether expressing solidarity with the Venezuelan people or sharing images of the demonstrations that have turned violent in the face of repression by the Armed Forces and the police, Venezuelan stars like Nacho, Lele Pons and Elena Rose, as well as foreigners like Juan Luis Guerra, Gloria Trevi and Don Omar, have shared messages of support with their millions of followers.

Trending on Billboard

One of those who has been most vocal from exile is Danny Ocean, who in recent days posted an emotional video on his Instagram account calling on the family members of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces (FANB) and police forces to make them see reason to prevent further bloodshed.

The demonstrations in Venezuela have left “at least 20 dead, dozens injured, and hundreds detained,” reports Univision Noticias. While the government has refused to make public the voting records that would show Maduro has won, opposition leader María Corina Machado and her team published theirs on the internet, with election witnesses also showing them on social media. The U.S. government has recognized Edmundo González as the winner of the elections.

Danny Ocean, who left Venezuela in 2015, feels that the only way for this to end is with the support of the militia, and that is why he insists on his call. In this “as told to” narrative, the Venezuelan musician reflects on the situation in his country and invites his colleagues to unite in a single message.

I don’t even know where to start. What is happening in Venezuela hurts me a lot. It hurts to see the number of kids who are dying right now in the streets, and I feel that the only ones who can ease this and reduce this are the National Armed Forces and the police.

I know that they must not be having an easy time either, honestly. But, I don’t know, that’s how I feel. Everything I have been talking about from my side has been from the heart, trying to be as sensible as possible. And I also don’t want to interfere with the communication that is happening right now with Venezuela; I am trying to support all the people who are trying to talk to their children, helping to pass information about the people who are inside Venezuela.

From my side, I don’t want to be putting out information like this arbitrarily; I think it’s necessary to give space to digital media so they can communicate what they want to communicate. I just want to call on the relatives of the military to please talk to them, tell them that we are really tired. They know what is happening and what is really going on and what is right and what is wrong. They are the only ones who can help the people so that there is no massacre in the streets.

If we want to get out of this mess, because this is no longer a political issue of left, right, blue, red, yellow, none of that crap. No. This is now a situation of good against evil. And about people being tired. People are really tired.

And beyond that, there are almost 8 million Venezuelans who are abroad, as I said in my post, and the region is not prepared for another massive wave [of emigrants]. And we don’t want more broken families. Enough is enough! If that number is so high, it’s for a reason. If there’s smoke, there’s fire. This is something very important for the international community to understand, because we are really tired, and the military knows it.

The game right now is on their side. It really depends on them. And I, as a spokesperson, as an artist, am trying to simply carry my message on that side.

[I would like to see Venezuela] prosperous, with chances to grow, where people don’t have to worry about their future, don’t have to worry about having to leave to seek a better future. A place where there is room for everything. Venezuela has everything for everyone to do something incredible. That’s what I hope happens at the end of all this.

But now I’m trying to focus on the present, on what is happening. Right now I think we need to all get together, guys. People are dying in the streets.

I see artists throwing crap at each other [on social media]. That doesn’t work. The messages have to be positive. I know there is a lot of pain, I know there are many things stored inside, but it’s not the time to be throwing crap at each other. It’s very important that at least the community of artists among us Venezuelans are aligned with the messages we are giving.

If all the artists got on a wave of pleading with our militia and our police to help and collaborate — because they are the only ones who can reduce that number [of victims] — that would be great. I think it would be a spectacular movement if we all united with that message.

Justin Timberlake Pleads Not Guilty in Sag Harbor DWI Case

Justin Timberlake made a brief appearance via Zoom in a Sag Harbor, NY courtroom on Friday morning (August 2) where a spokesperson for the singer confirmed to Billboard that he entered a not guilty plea in connection with his June arrest for DWI.

According to CNN, Timberlake, 43, attended the arraignment virtually and spoke twice during the hearing, answering “yes” to questions from Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace. The procedural hearing reportedly included Irace admonishing Timberlake’s attorney, Edward Burke, for comments he’s made outside the courtroom to the media, encouraging the lawyer to be careful about speaking to the press in the future.

During a hearing last month, Burke disputed the claim that Timberlake was intoxicated and said his client should never have been arrested, saying, “the police made a number of very significant errors in this case.” CNN reported that Burke once again claimed that the singer was not intoxicated at the time of his arrest during Friday morning’s appearance.

Trending on Billboard

Timberlake was arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor on June 17 and arraigned the following day on one count of “driving while intoxicated.” According to a statement from the Sag Harbor PD at the time, JT was observed “operating a 2025 BMW southbound on Madison Street, failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign and failing to maintain his lane of travel.” A police report filed by the arresting officer added, “It was ascertained that the defendant was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”

Officer Michael Arkinson noted that the 10-time Grammy winner told him during the arrest, “I had one martini and I followed my friends home.” Burke issued a statement two days later promising to “vigorously” defend the pop star, whose Tennessee driver’s license was suspended in the state of New York; Burke said that is standard procedure in DWI cases.

Timberlake is not required to attend the next hearing in the case on August 9 and a spokesperson for Burke told Billboard the attorney had no further comment at press time. The singer is currently on the European leg of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, with the first of two shows at Antwerp’s Sportpaleis scheduled for Saturday night (August 3).

Watch Snoop Dogg Go ‘Snooping Around’ the Louvre on Private Tour During 2024 Paris Olympics

Snoop Dogg has kept busy amid the 2024 Olympics in Paris, but he’s still finding time to take in a little culture.

In a hilarious Instagram video posted Friday (Aug. 2), the rapper embarks on a guided one-on-one tour through the city’s famous Louvre museum while no one else is around. “We’re finna be snooping around,” he tells the camera, walking through the empty halls.

The Doggfather starts by checking out the world’s most famous painting, Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” “I just found out I was Mona Lisa’s twin brother, Tony Lisa,” he jokes while looking at the painting in awe, checking whether the portrait’s eyes follow him by observing it from different angles.

Next, Snoop takes in the “Winged Victory of Samothrace” sculpture, correctly guessing which of the masterpiece’s wings is an original part of the statue, and which had to be replaced. “I love this,” he says in disbelief. “This is beautiful.”

Later, the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” artist mistakes a painting of the Roman god Cupid for a woman — that is, until he gets a closer look at the figure’s anatomy. “That ain’t a lady?” he remarks. “Cupid? I knew it was somebody I knew.”

Snoop has been in the City of Love since the Olympics kicked off July 26, serving as a commentator for NBC. So far, he’s participated in the torch relay, interviewed athletes and cheered on Team USA at various events, including the women’s gymnastics qualification — a few days after which the Simone Biles-led group won gold in the all-around.

The musician also led gymnast Suni Lee in a round of hilarious affirmations before testing out his swimming skills with Olympic champion Michael Phelps in the pool.

The Lox Perform Their Classics on NPR’s Tiny Desk: Watch

Waking up on a Friday morning and realizing The Lox did a Tiny Desk concert hits harder than a strong cup of coffee.

Since destroying Dipset in the most memorable of Verzuz battles, the trio out of Yonkers have reached a new level of popularity. Fans new and old appreciate Styles, Jadakiss, and Sheek for their loyalty and cohesion as they’re one of the only groups in music history to have never broken up, going on 30 years strong. Their cohesion and professionalism was on full display again during their NPR Tiny Desk set on Friday (Aug. 2).

The group ran through the classics such as Styles P’s “Good Times” from his debut solo album A Gangster and a Gentleman and “Money, Power, & Respect” from their debut group album of the same name. They even made sure they did something for the ladies with Sheek performing his song “Good Love” from his third album, Silverback Gorilla. While they opened the set up with the instrumental to Jada’s street classic “All for the Love,” they did end it with his and Styles’ ultimate party starter “We Gonna Make It” from Jada’s debut album Kiss tha Game Goodbye.

Billie Eilish & Charli XCX Donate 10,000 Pairs of Underwear From ‘Guess’ Video to Women’s Charity

In their cheeky “Guess” music video, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX stand on top of a mountain of women’s underwear — but none of it went to waste once the director called “cut.”

Following the visual’s shoot, the two pop stars donated all of the unworn garments to I Support the Girls, a foundation that collects and distributes essential items — such as bras, underwear and menstrual hygiene products — to women experiencing homelessness, impoverishment or distress. According to a post on the non-profit charity‘s website, the contribution included about 10,000 pairs of undies.

I Support the Girls also got a shout-out at the end of the “Guess” music video, which dropped Thursday (Aug. 1) soon after the “Von Dutch” artist teased that the nine-time Grammy winner was joining the project with a cryptic Instagram post. In the photo, Charli had showed off her frilly lingerie while her unidentified duet partner, who later turned out to be Eilish, flashed three layers of boxers to the camera.

“All unworn undergarments will be donated to survivors of domestic violence through I Support the Girls,” reads a message during the credits of the Aidan Zamiri-directed project, written in lime-green lettering to match Charli’s Brat album cover.

Following the donation, I Support the Girls is officially in its Brat summer. The foundation posted a video showing off its process of distributing products to those in need by customizing the “Guess” lyrics: “You wanna buy it, share it, pack it, ship it, pull it off the shelves and then go gift it.”

Eilish’s appearance on “Guess” marks just the latest remix Charli has released from her critically acclaimed album Brat, which has so far peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The “Boom Clap” singer has also dropped revamped versions of her album’s tracks with Lorde, Robyn and more.
