*NSYNC, Madonna & The Goo Goo Dolls Impact Global Charts With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Syncs

The highest new entry – the Hot Shot Debut – on the Aug. 10-dated Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and Billboard Global 200 is *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” new at Nos. 16 and 18, respectively. The song with the biggest weekly increase in overall consumption – the Greatest Gainer – is the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” up more than 30 spots on each list, hitting new peaks of Nos. 55 and 58.

Why are these songs, both chart-toppers upon their original releases a quarter-century ago, surging worldwide? Both tracks are featured in Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine, the biggest movie in the world. The superhero flick has brought in $852.1 million since its July 26 release, according to Box Office Mojo, becoming the year’s second highest-grossing film in a matter of 11 days. The film and its soundtrack are drenched in catalog songs, employing classic hits from the 80s, 90s and 2000s to juice its nostalgic appeal.

“Bye Bye Bye” debuts on the back of 35.8 million streams and 5,000 downloads sold worldwide in the week ending Aug. 1, according to Luminate. From the previous week, before the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, those numbers mark an 879% increase in global streams, and a more than 1,000% increase in sales.

While consumption is up across the board, “Bye Bye Bye” sees bigger gains internationally, up 1,083% in non-U.S. streams compared to its still-massive 494% bump stateside. The song pops up on four of Billboard’s Hits of the World charts. It’s particularly strong in Asia, at No. 7 on Malaysia Songs with appearances on rankings for Hong Kong and Singapore. Additionally, it debuts at No. 16 on Peru Songs.

This is *NSYNC’s third appearance on the Global 200, following their perennial holiday-season run for “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,” and last year’s reunion track, “Better Place.” Those have reached as high as Nos. 97 and 128, respectively, immediately outpaced by the group’s Total Request Live-era classic. “Bye Bye Bye” topped the Pop Airplay tally for 10 weeks in the spring of 2000. (Billboard’s global charts launched in 2020).

The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” crowned the same list for four weeks in July and August of 1998. Originally written for the City of Angels soundtrack, it’s fitting that another summer blockbuster has sent the song surging 26 years later.

“Iris” has been a constant on the global charts, logging its 48th week on the Global 200 since debuting in May 2022. But while the track has enjoyed a consistent on-and-off-the-chart presence, its Deadpool & Wolverine sync sparks its highest rank yet. It’s up by 23% to 21.3 million streams worldwide in the latest tracking week.

One more song featured in the film debuts on this week’s global charts. Madonna arrives with “Like A Prayer,” starting at No. 181 on the Global 200 and No. 189 on Global Excl. U.S. Back in 1989, the track topped the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks.

This isn’t Madonna’s first Deadpool-inspired bump. “Like A Prayer” was featured in the film’s official trailer, yielding a 49% blast in global streams (to 4.3 million) in the week of April 19-25. So while the song’s usage in the film may not have been a surprise to moviegoers, it still led to a 175% increase, nearly tripling its post-trailer count at 12.3 million.

“Like A Prayer” is Madonna’s second entry on the global charts. “Popular,” her collaboration with The Weekend and Playboi Carti for HBO’s The Idol, debuted last June, before reaching No. 13 on both lists in February of this year. That makes “Like A Prayer” the first of Madonna’s solo catalog to crack the lists. She has charted 58 songs on the Hot 100, including 38 top 10s and 12 No. 1s, but her storied career mostly pre-dates the 2020 launch of the global charts.

Recording Academy Issues Call for Member ‘Why I Vote’ Video Submissions

The Recording Academy has issued an emailed call to action for its voting members on Monday (Aug. 5) to submit smartphone videos in which they answer such questions including, “Why do you take the time to vote in the Grammy Awards each year?” The academy will then combine excerpts from the submitted clips to create “at least two short compilation videos.” In addition, individual member videos will be shared throughout September across the Academy’s social platforms.

The academy doesn’t want these videos to be self-serving promotional spiels, so they advised members to “please avoid promoting any personal or commercial projects in your submission. … Videos that reference your own or others’ Grammy Awards submissions by name will not be considered for inclusion.” And they don’t want people to filibuster, so they added: “Keep the videos below 90 seconds in length.”

In the email, the academy asked participants to answer any of the below questions in their submissions:

  • What does voting in the Grammy Awards mean to you as an artist?
  • How does participating in the Grammy Awards voting process shape music history?
  • How does your vote contribute to recognizing and rewarding musical excellence in the Grammys?
  • What makes Grammy Awards voting special to you?
  • Why do you take the time to vote in the Grammy Awards each year?

Members have until Thursday, Aug. 15 at midnight PT to submit their videos, though the academy says their form will close after 50 submissions are received. Submitted member videos will be part of the academy’s voter engagement campaign, launching in early September across the organization’s digital channels.

Both individual member videos and compilation videos will roll out across the organization’s Instagram and TikTok accounts (and may also roll out across X, Facebook, and LinkedIn). Usage is for approximately one year through July 31, 2025. The academy cautions: Due to the expected number of submissions, the use of all videos is not guaranteed.

The Weeknd Returns to Halloween Horror Nights With Nightmare Trilogy Haunted House

While The Weeknd is wrapping up his final trilogy of albums, he has another horrifying one on the way this Halloween. The superstar announced on Wednesday (Aug. 7) that he’ll be returning to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood with a new haunted house, The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy.

The one-of-a-kind horror experience will feature surprises at every turn and music by The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) scored by his frequent collaborator and seven-time Grammy-winning producer Mike Dean.

In 2022, The Weeknd launched the After Hours Nightmare haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights that was inspired by his Billboard 200-topping album, After Hours. “I knew his songs, but I didn’t really understand how it all connected to horror until I sat down and started talking to Abel and then did a deep dive into his music,” Halloween Horror Nights creative director and executive producer John Murdy told Billboard at the time. “His music videos and his cinematic inspirations … was really I think the ‘a-ha’ moment for me.”

Halloween Horror Nights kicks off on Sept. 5 and will continue on select nights through Nov. 3. Ye & Ty Dolla $ign, Vultures 2 (YZY): We must be nearing the 15th anniversary of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, because Ye (formerly Kanye West) and Taylor Swift are mixing it up again. This time, it’s not particularly personal: Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department has been the album to beat on the Billboard 200 for over three months now, and Ye & Ty’s typically long-expected and long-delayed sequel o set Vultures 2, originally set for March, finally saw release last Saturday (Aug. 3), after being announced for the day before.  

Nevertheless, the race is now on, and Ye and Ty are in it to win it. As is typical of last-second new Ye releases of the past decade, Vultures 2 is not available for physical purchase upon its release – it is available only in digital format, on iTunes and Amazon and at his webstore, and is currently being sold for just $5. Late on Tuesday night (Aug. 6), Ye released a new deluxe edition to the album as a webstore exclusive, featuring a new song currently not available on streaming, “Take Off Your Dress.”

Given these maneuvers and Ye’s history on the chart, Vultures 2 would seem a likely frontrunner for the No. 1 spot. However, the set’s performance on streaming has not been equivalent to the dominance of his and Ty’s first Vultures: On Apple Music, the album only claims three of the top 50 spots, and it only has a single entry in that range on Spotify: “Field Trip,” which appears to be the closest thing to a breakout hit on the album – and still nowhere near a threat to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 like runaway smash “Carnival” did off the preceding set. Add to that some middling notices from fans and critics, many of whom have deemed the album unfinished-sounding, as well as a partial first tracking week (thanks to the delayed Saturday release), and Vultures 2 is fighting an uphill battle to claim the 200’s top spot this week.   

Still, with “Take Off Your Dress” drawing a highly positive fan response so far, the new deluxe edition of the album should help its numbers a decent amount. And the bar has been lower to clear with Tortured Poets in the last couple weeks than it was in the first few months – Swift’s album reigned last week with just 71,000 total units, the lowest total for a No. 1 album on the chart since March.  

Taylor Swift, The Tortured Poets Department (Republic): It’s been a lucky 13 weeks now for Taylor Swift’s massive blockbuster atop the Billboard 200, as the set returned to the top spot in a slow release week after having bequeathed it to Eminem (The Death of Slim Shady) and Stray Kids (ATE), respectively, in the two prior frames. The album has already set a career-best mark for Swift, though it still has a way to go to match the 19 weeks notched by Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time for the longest-reigning No. 1 album of the decade.  

Swift doesn’t appear to be giving up the fight just yet. She introduced a new digital variant of the album on her webstore over the weekend, with an exclusive bonus track: “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys (First Draft Voice Memo).” (At the same time, she re-released three of her previously available digital variants, each of which had a different first draft voice memo as their own exclusive bonus track.) She also held a sale on Aug. 4 where 16 previously available physical variants of the album (across CD, cassette and vinyl) were discounted by 13% — presumably in tribute to the album’s new landmark number of weeks ruling the chart – while also restocking the signed CD edition of the album on her webstore, which (as usual) quickly sold out.  

If totals between Ye and Swift remain tight through these final two days of the tracking week, there may likely be more reissues and releases to come on both sides, as the two historic rivals look to gain an edge in one of pop’s preeminent battlefields.  

Chappell Roan, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (KRA/Amusement/Island/Republic): Don’t forget about the Midwest Princess! While Roan’s debut album is now nearly 10 months old, it continues to gain in overall momentum – climbing to a new peak of No. 4 on the Billboard 200 this week, as five of its tracks continue to slowly ascend the Hot 100. The ubiquitous Roan has also benefitted from additional headlines and exposure following her historically well-attended late-afternoon Lollapalooza set on Thursday, and even from the announcement of Minnesota governor and Nebraska native Tim Walz as Kamala Harris’ running mate – with many pop fans dubbing him the “Midwest Prince(ss)” to Harris’ Brat, and even seeing parallels between their campaign hats with Roan’s own merch.  

Rise and Fall was still well behind Tortured Poets this week in terms of overall units – 53,000 to 71,000, with the former actually dipping a little from the previous week, despite the chart gain – so it’s unlikely to bridge that gap in one or even a couple weeks. However, given the unstoppable growth of the album over the past four months, it seems practically inevitable that it will be a true contender for the top spot before long – particularly if Roan ever releases any kind of physical reissue or deluxe edition for the well-loved set.  

Charli XCX, Brat (Atlantic/AG): And of course, you can’t talk about Midwest Princess this summer without mentioning its across-the-pond counterpart. While Brat has also been gradually gaining in public awareness throughout the warm-weather months – with breakout hits “360” and “Apple” bounding up the Hot 100 — this week it gets a particularly notable adrenaline shot: the release of a new Billie Eilish-featuring remix to Brat bonus cut “Guess,” which also received an extended rollout over the past week, including an eye-popping music video.  

The “Guess” remix, which topped both the Spotify Daily Top Songs USA and YouTube’s Trending Music charts on Friday in its first full day of release, looks poised to become Charli’s biggest Hot 100 hit of the whole Brat era. It should give the album a major boost on the chart this week — though posing a true challenge to Swift’s juggernaut may also still be too lofty a goal for it at the moment.

Ye Explains Why Drake & Jay-Z Are the Top Rappers in Unearthed 2022 Interview With Candace Owens

Conservative political commentator Candace Owens interviewed Ye — formerly Kanye West — in 2022 and kept the 72-minute chat shelved until releasing it on her YouTube page on Wednesday (Aug. 7).

The explosive interview finds Yeezy touching on a myriad of topics as he was feeling the impact of his antisemitic remarks, which resulted in companies such as Gap, Balenciaga, Def Jam and Adidas severing ties with the Chicago-bred artist.

At one point, Ye gave flowers to rival Drake and mentor Jay-Z as the best to ever do it in the rap world.

“This makes me think, Drake is the best rapper ever by the numbers. Jay-Z is the greatest rapper ever by the inspiration,” he stated.

The follow-up comment from Ye took a drastic turn when it came to Hov and Beyoncé’s marriage. “I just think Beyoncé need to let him go get some p—y, serious,” West suggested in jarring fashion. “Go to the [Dominican Republic] or something, you know what I mean?”

Fans couldn’t believe where the conversation about Jay-Z ended up. “50 cent is gonna have a field day with this,” one person wrote on X, as another added, “Ye is definitely crazy for saying that out of the blue like that.”

West and Jay-Z haven’t been spotted together in recent years so it’s unclear where their relationship stands today. However, on the music side, Jay made a surprise appearance on Donda standout “Jail” in 2021.

Ye and Drake have been frenemies with on-and-off-again beefing for much of the decade. West attempted to insert himself into the Kendrick Lamar-Drizzy feud on behalf of K. Dot, but his “Like That” remix didn’t make much noise.

Yeezy also name-dropped Drake in what appears to be a dissing fashion on Vultures 2 track 530, which centers around his divorce from Kim Kardashian. “You a fake b—h/ You don’t really love Ye, go listen to Drake, b—h,” he raps.

2 Suspects Arrested for Plotting Attack at Taylor Swift’s Vienna Show

Two suspects were arrest for allegedly plotting an attack at Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna, Austria, this week, according to ABC News.

The two people — one of whom is a 19-year-old Austrian citizen — were taken into custody on Wednesday (Aug. 7) after they reportedly “radicalized” themselves online, with Swift’s concert marking the target of an attack they were planning, per authorities. No further information has come out about the two suspects.

Swift is set to perform at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on Thursday (Aug. 8), Friday (Aug. 9) and Saturday (Aug. 10). The venue seats more than 50,000 fans. Authorities have confirmed that security measures have been increased for the shows.

The superstar, who kicked off the European leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour in May, will be stopping at Wembley Stadium in London before she’ll swing back through the United States and Canada for one last leg before closing out the Eras Tour in December. 

“That feels so far away from now, but then again, it feels like we just played our first show on this tour because you have made this so fun for us that we wanted to do 100 shows, 150-something shows that we have on the whole tour,” Swift said on stage during a show in June. “This tour has really become my entire life. It’s taken over everything. I think I once had hobbies, but I don’t know what they were anymore because all I do when I’m not onstage is sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mash-ups and think about what you might want to hear. So when I’m not on the stage, I’m dreaming of being back on the stage with you guys.”

BTS’ SUGA Apologizes After His License Was Revoked | Billboard News

BTS’ Suga issued an apology after having his license revoked for driving a scooter while intoxicated. Keep watching for what he has to say.

BTS’ Suga issues an apology after being caught riding a scooter while intoxicated. Suga, who also goes by Agust D as a solo artist, is addressing fans after an incident involving police in Seoul. He took to Weverse to explain the situation, saying, in part, “I violated road traffic laws without realizing that I was not allowed to use an electric kickboard while drunk due to the simple thought that it was a short distance away.”

BTS’ record label, BIG HIT, issued a statement explaining that Suga was wearing a helmet and that no one nor any property was hurt or damaged during the incident. Suga went on to give more details, saying, “While setting up my electric scooter at the front gate of my house, I fell alone. A police officer was nearby, and as a result of a breathalyzer test, my license was revoked and I was fined.”

Suga is currently serving mandatory military service in South Korea. BIG HIT added, “As a social service agent during his military service, he is prepared to accept any disciplinary actions from his place of work for causing a social disturbance.”

Fuerza Regida’s ‘Pero No Te Enamores’: All 15 Tracks Ranked

With the raw energy of corridos and the dance-floor fervor of Jersey club, Fuerza Regida’s latest creation, Pero No Te Enamores, forges a bold, unprecedented fusion. At the helm, frontman Jesús Ortiz Paz, a.k.a. JOP, embraced the risk of blending these distinct styles.

“When I first heard [Jersey club] about one to two years ago, I loved it. I was like, ‘Man, I wanna do something with it.’ I just didn’t know how. But I knew that when I did, they were gonna talk sh–t,” he tells Billboard Español. “So when it got to the point to make a new album, I was like, ‘I wanna do Jerseys and dance music, I want to move something different but still keep the original Fuerza Regida [essence], with the guitars.”

The gamble paid off. This week, the album, which was released on July 25, made an immediate impact on the Billboard charts, debuting at No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums and No. 23 on the Billboard 200. The focus track, “Nel,” marked by its emotional-yet-disillusioned tone, entered the coveted Billboard Hot 100 at 91. Additionally, eight cuts from the album appear on Hot Latin Songs.

For this new sound, Fuerza Regida enlisted music producers Gordo — known for his work on Drake’s Baltimore club hit “Sticky” — and Synthetic, the architect behind Lil Uzi Vert’s Jersey club smash “Just Wanna Rock.” “Gordo has the dance s–t on lock, he’s the man; and Synthetic, he’s killing it with the Jersey club,” adds JOP.

The San Bernardino band’s innovative leap into Jersey corridos does more than fuse two disparate genres: It carves out a fresh niche in the musical lexicon, affirming that the barrios and dancehalls can, in fact, share a singular, resonant heartbeat.

Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance was the subject of a comical jab by Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz during a vibrant speech with Kamala Harris in Philadelphia.

On Tuesday (August 6), before a packed auditorium at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris officially introduced her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota. He demonstrated how effective he was with his messaging as he attacked JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate. “Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland,” Walz began. “JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires, and then wrote a best seller trashing that community. Come on. That’s not what middle America is. And I gotta tell you. I can’t wait to debate the guy.” As the crowd roared, Walz then quipped: “That is if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”

The reference to an alleged passage from the first edition of Vance’s book Hillbilly Elegy made the crowd raucous, and Walz immediately acknowledged it. “You see what I did there?” he said, briefly touching his ear as he laughed. But Walz’s speech also had jabs for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as well. “Make no mistake, violent crime was up under Donald Trump,” Walz stated, “and that’s not even counting the crimes he committed.” He also added: “He doesn’t know the first thing about service – because he’s too busy serving himself.” Harris spent her speech highlighting Walz’s accomplishments, which include his decades-long career as a teacher in high school and defensive coordinator for the school’s team as well as his 24 years serving in the Army National Guard. “My promise to you is this: Our campaign will reach out to everyone, from red states to blue states, from the heartland to the coast, in rural, urban, suburban, and tribal communities,” she said to the crowd.

Walz was one of two remaining candidates to be Harris’ running mate – the other was Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who pledged his support for the ticket at the rally. Walz has proven to be a highly effective communicator so far for the Democrats, having been the figure who first described the Republican candidates and their supporters as “weird,” which has become virally affixed to them in the last couple of weeks.
