Young Guru Tells Wild Story Behind Jay-Z’s Verse on Drake’s ‘Talk Up’

If you haven’t heard, Drake dumped 100 gigabytes of content online Tuesday, and in the second folder, there’s a video clip that shows Drake, 40, and some friends discussing when to expect Jay-Z‘s “Talk Up” last-minute feature verse from the Toronto rapper’s fifth solo album Scorpion.

So apparently, Jay was on tour with his wife Beyoncé and planned to record and submit his verse afterward at the venue. In the clip, Drake tells 40 he plans to take a quick two-hour power nap so he can be around just in case the veteran rapper has some questions or concerns.

Trending on Billboard

Journalist Elliott Wilson posted the clip on his Instagram, and Jay’s longtime DJ and engineer Young Guru decided to gives fans the backstory to how they were able to get Drake the verse on time in the comments.

Between having to DJ during the show, being in charge of building a makeshift studio on the fly at the venue, and being late to a party he was booked to DJ months in advance, Guru’s night was pretty hectic. Here’s how he remembers the night in question:

We are on [the On the Run II Tour]. Remember I’m the DJ. Hov hit me and simply said, “Set up a studio in the venue.” I’m like, “What?” But, of course, I get it done. We go out and do a two-hour show.

Mind you, he has to remember every verse from every album. No backing tracks. I’m DJing, I can’t miss a cue or [musical director Omar Edwards] would kill me. We finish the show. We go back in the room to finish the verse, but the problem is I have an afterparty. I can’t [remember] what city or country in Europe, but understand, my parties have been set up months before the tour.

The promotor waited in [the] parking lot for two hours and I can’t tell him why I’m late. By the time Hov finished, the Internet that we set up from Live Nation is gone. Everyone is gone. I had to tether my phone to my computer to send the session to [Drake’s producer Noah “40” Shebib]. I made it to the club just in time for my set.

When y’all hear this work I sometimes wonder if you understand how much goes into it!!!! Classic Nights!!!! And I killed my set lol.

All of J Balvin’s Music Videos With 1 Billion YouTube Views: ‘Mi Gente,’ ‘Ay Vamos’ & More

Ahead of the release of his highly awaited studio album Rayo, J Balvin continues to crown YouTube’s Billion Views Club as the artist with the most titles in the coveted club. He has a total of 15 music clips with more than 1 billion views, at time of publishing, and surpasses previous titleholders such as Ozuna and Justin Bieber.

The Colombian artist’s most recent BVC entry is his collaboration on Tainy’s “Agua,” part of the 2020 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run movie soundtrack. The next visual clip that’s closest to the 1 billion mark is “Sensualidad” with Bad Bunny and Prince Royce (currently at 930 million views).

In 2023, Balvin reclaimed his crown as the artist with the most videos in YouTube’s Billion Views Club, climbing to the top with the entry of David Guetta’s 2018 “Say My Name,” in collaboration with Bebe Rexha and Balvin.

“With the move, Balvin breaks a three-way tie with Bad Bunny and Ozuna for the artist with the most entries in the Billion Views Club as a lead, featured artist or collaborator,” according to former press release. At that time, “Say My Name” marked the French DJ’s fifth title with more than one billion views, as well as Rexha’s third entry, and Balvin’s 14th entry.

The artist born José Álvaro Osorio Balvin made his comeback in early 2023 after a nearly 10-month hiatus from social media and creating music.

“Really right now, I’ve been focused on my family,” he previously told Billboard about his break. “I left social media to be connected to my reality and to my family. That has taught me a lot — to live more in the present. Obviously, I miss my fans, but when the time is right, I’ll be back.”

Balvin’s sixth studio album, Rayo, is set to drop Aug. 9, following his sets La Familia (2013), Energía (2016), Vibras (2018), Colores (2020), and José (2021).

In celebration of his new set, Billboard spotlights all of his music videos in the coveted BVC, below:

Watch Bon Iver Rally Support for Kamala Harris & Tim Walz With ‘Battle Cry of Freedom’ Cover in Wisconsin

Bon Iver took the stage at Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’s campaign rally in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on Wednesday (Aug. 7), drumming up support for the Democratic presidential bid before captivating the audience with a mellow cover of “The Battle Cry of Freedom” on guitar.

In a clip from the rally posted by Harris’ headquarters on X, Justin Vernon introduced the Civil War-era composition as a tune that’s been “rolling around in [his] head these last months.”

“We’re here for the right reasons,” he continued as the crowd clapped. “We all know what we’re here for, so we’re gonna do our thing, make this music and make way for the people we need to hear from.”

Sporting one of the Harris-Walz campaign’s Internet-famous trucker caps, the singer/songwriter went on to play an emotional rendition of the ballad on electric guitar, letting the notes wash over the gathered voters before adding in vocals. “Yes we’ll rally round the flag, we’ll rally once again/ Shouting the battle cry of freedom,” Vernon belted with his signature warble. “We will rally from the hillside, we’ll gather from the plain/ Shouting the battle cry of freedom!”

Billboard was the first to report that Bon Iver would be performing at Harris’ campaign-trail stop in Eau Claire, where the two-time Grammy-winning act was founded. Vernon has long been committed to uplifting his hometown, founding the Eaux Claires Music Festival with The National‘s Aaron Dessner back in 2015.

Harris and Walz also took turns speaking during the rally following Vernon’s performance, as well as personally greeted some of the kids who came out to the event (paying no mind to an unceremonious interruption from a plane branded “Trump-Vance”). It marks one of the duo’s first campaign events since the sitting VP announced that the Minnesota governor would serve as her running mate on Tuesday.

Phony Stark aka Elon Musk Sues Advertisers For Allegedly Boycotting X

Elon Musk & X have filed a lawsuit against advertisers he claimed colluded to boycott the social media platform.

According to reports, tech billionaire Elon Musk and the parent company of the social media platform X, formerly Twitter filed a lawsuit in a Texas federal court against the World Federation of Advertisers claiming these companies colluded to boycott the platform. The suit also names other companies such as Mars, Unilever, CVS, and Dutch clean energy firm Orsted. “This is an antitrust action relating to a group boycott by competing advertisers of one of the most popular social media platforms in the United States,” the suit reads.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino informed subscribers of the lawsuit in a video and letter posted to X, formerly Twitter, stating that the advertisers were harming “the marketplace of ideas” with their actions. The suit also named the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, or GARM as a defendant claiming they were “discontinuing entirely or substantially reducing their previously substantial advertising purchases.” The company seeks a jury trial and unspecified damages, alleging the boycott is still ongoing. “By sharply curtailing its revenues, the boycott has reduced X’s ability to invest in new or improved functionality, thus harming the consumers who use X’s platform.”

The lawsuit comes after an investigation was initiated by the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee last month, which heard testimony from those companies involved. “The extent to which GARM has organized its trade association and coordinates actions that rob consumers of choices is likely illegal under the antitrust laws and threatens fundamental American freedoms,” its report read. Musk infamously told advertisers at the DealBook Summit last November who had begun to withdraw after his acquisition of X in 2022 to leave, saying: “Somebody’s going to try to blackmail me with advertising?! Blackmail me with money? Go f–k yourself. Go. F–k. Yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is.” Companies cited the rise of racist and anti-Semitic content on the platform as a major reason for their exit.

Kesha Plans to Re-Record ‘TiK ToK’ Lyric Change When She Has ‘Legal Rights To’

“TiK ToK was the first single that I put into this world that had my voice AND my name credited!!!! I remember making it fun and happy because that’s how I felt and wanted others to feel,” she wrote alongside the glitter-heavy cover art of the 2009 track. “What I’m so proud of is that’s how this song STILL makes me feel, through it all, and those are emotions I want all of us to connect to. 15 (!!!!!!) years later, I see this song as a snapshot into the way I saw the world at the time. That girl was naive and wild and playful. This song eternalizes a side of myself that I love very much, and now see I have to protect fiercely. The world has changed so much and so have I.”

She added that she “loves” the lyric change that she hopes to make “permanent” on the recording one day. After altering the song during Reneé Rapp’s Coachella festival set in April to include the line “f— P. Diddy” — in light of accusations of sexual misconduct against the rapper and mogul — Kesha doubled down by tweeting, “WAKE UP IN THE MORNING LIKE F— P DIDDY” in all caps.

Trending on Billboard

“I will re-record it when I have legal rights to! Now, my first baby stands for so much,” Kesha continued on X. “It stands for fiercely protecting my fun and unadulterated joy, in myself and in others. The whole ride has been absolute insanity, but the JOY is still riding.”

She concluded her message, “I hope you all can find 3 1/2 minutes of play in this song and connect with your wild child-like joy.”

The track gave the star her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 – and the first No. 1 of the 2010s. See Kesha’s celebration of “TiK ToK” below.

In the early morning of hours Wednesday, August 7, rapper Nelly was arrested for charges that included ecstasy possession. Yes, the current year is 2024.

Per KCRG, the “Hot In Herre” rapper, born  Cornell Haynes II, 49, was pinched in the St. Louis area and was sent to the Maryland Heights Police Department. He was released shortly thereafter.

The details are scarce but reportedly, Nelly was popped in possession of four ecstasy pills and he was also charged with not having insurance. NBC News reports that he was arrested for failing to appear for an outstanding warrant for a traffic violation.

Bruh… But kicker is Nelly wasn’t even driving at the time of his arrest.

TMZ reports that Nelly was asked to his ID at the Hollywood Casino in St. Charles by Missouri State Highway Patrol’s gaming division troopers. After running his license, an active warrant was found. The ecstasy was found during the search, and he was hit with a felony drug possession charge along with the warrant for not having vehicle insurance (from a previous traffic stop).

Cold world.

Recently, Nelly and singer Ashanti revealed that the couple, who reunited after years apart not too long ago, were already married since December. They are also expecting their first child together.

WNBA Star A’ja Wilson Shares Bloopers From Her Attempt at Megan Thee Stallion’s Viral ‘Mamushi’ Dance

A’ja Wilson just shared a video of her attempting to do Megan Thee Stallion‘s viral “Mamushi” TikTok dance, and let’s just say it wasn’t exactly a slam dunk.

In the clip posted to her Instagram Story on Tuesday, the 27-year-old Olympic athlete and her Las Vegas Aces teammate Sydney Colson try out the choreography in what appears to be a hotel room. For the most part, Wilson gets the timing of the hand gestures right but seems a little unsure before giving up in a fit of laughter. Meanwhile, her fellow hooper messes up the pace of the movements almost immediately, so she starts improvising her own dance.

“tik tok bloopers are gems lmaoooo,” Wilson captioned the clip, also wishing Colson a happy birthday.

Trending on Billboard

It appears that the video was filmed back in early July, when Wilson posted a different video of the pair trying out the dance in the same room and outfits. “Day One of trynna learn the Watashi Wa stahh dance w/ @sydcolson Soooo How’d we do @Megan Thee Stallion ??,” she wrote at the time.

Nowadays, the WNBA star is much busier leading the Team USA women’s basketball team in the 2024 Olympics. Over the weekend, the ladies beat out Germany 87-68 in the group phase; at press time, the American ballers are winning against Nigeria in their quarterfinals game. Semifinals will take place Aug. 9, while the bronze and gold medal games will go down two days later.

What You Should Know About WMG’s Earnings Call: From Spotify Bundles to Executive Restructure

Warner Music Group’s stock was up around 3% Wednesday (Aug. 7) as investors optimistically received its fiscal third-quarter earnings report, which showed that streaming revenue continues to grow for the third-largest major music company.

On a call discussing the company’s earnings, Warner Music Group (WMG) CEO Robert Kyncl answered questions and shared his perspective on Spotify’s bundling controversy; discussed what WMG is doing to get more mileage out of its catalog; and shared a broad update on the company’s previously-announced $200 million cost savings/reinvestment plan — while remaining mum on the more recent executive restructure that’s been reverberating through the music industry since last week.

See below for three major takeaways from the call.

Trending on Billboard

Bundling is not inherently bad

Overall streaming revenue was up 5% for Warner this quarter, with recorded music streaming revenue up 8.7% — reflecting growth in subscription revenue of 7%. While that was welcome news to investors, the subject of Spotify’s contentious decision to bundle music and audiobooks — allowing them to qualify for the lower mechanical royalty rate reserved for bundles under the Copyright Royalty Board’s (CRB) Phonorecords IV agreement — did not go unmentioned. But in his opening remarks and later, during a Q&A period with analysts, Kyncl said the company derives its streaming earnings from a diversity of partners and appeared to tamp down talk of the controversy that erupted over the bundling policy.

“I know that investor attention has recently been focused on the dynamics between labels and DSPs, with some speculating that we’re adversaries playing a zero-sum game. That’s simply not the case,” Kyncl said. “We’re actively engaged with our partners around ways to drive growth for all of us.  Streaming dynamics remain healthy … with plenty of headroom for subscriber growth in both established and emerging markets … across multiple partners. Also, price optimization and improvements in the royalty models will provide ongoing opportunities for additional growth.”

Kyncl went on to note that bundling, which could result in lower payments to songwriters, has been used in other industries, like TV, for the purpose of market expansion. “The job of wholesalers like the music companies is to ensure that the sanctity of our pricing are in line with each other. You can expect us to pursue that strategy,” Kyncl said. “As it relates to CRB, I don’t see it as something that will persist in the long term.”

Radio silence on executive restructuring

WMG executives did not directly discuss the internal restructuring plans made public last week, which led longtime co-leader of Atlantic Records and Atlantic Music Group chairman/CEO Julie Greenwald to announce she was stepping down on Tuesday (Aug. 6). During his opening remarks, Kyncl did highlight the “commercially and creatively … successful” partnership between WMG and 10K Projects — whose CEO/founder Elliot Grainge has been picked to succeed Greenwald — by noting English-Cypriot singer-songwriter Artemas’ single “I Like The Way You Kiss Me,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Global Excl. U.S. chart in April.

However, Kyncl did share details about a restructuring plan he mentioned on WMG’s last earnings call, which included selling the entertainment websites Uproxx and HipHopDX — with the overall goal to increase investment in music, technology and new skill sets and deliver $200 million in savings by the end of fiscal 2025.

“The majority of changes have already been implemented,” Kyncl said. “We are laying a strong foundation to accelerate our progress and yield greater value over time. We made improvements to our royalty systems and the tools used to identify unclaimed revenue, we overhauled our global supply chain, unlocking our ability to scale our third-party distribution business, and we’ve transformed our proprietary tools that identify fan trends while building new ways to engage with super fans.”

Catalog optimization is a major priority

One area where Kyncl is investing in technology is through a project he says is aimed at increasing the “performance of catalog…across all of our DSPs.”

Speaking of recent spikes in streaming for artists in Warner’s “deep” catalog — like Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman — as well as “shallow” catalog like Ed Sheeran, Kyncl said generating continued digital success stories for those acts is a top priority.

“We have a project on this across our technology and business teams to move down the entire catalog and make sure it’s properly optimized for streaming and on every large DSP,” he said on the call. “All of this augments our marketing campaigns against catalog which we have done in the past and continue to do and we’re applying more and more frontline focus on catalog.”
