Nipsey Hussle’s Brother Blacc Sam Opens Up About Rapper’s Last Moments

Nipsey Hussle‘s older Blacc Sam sat down with legendary radio personality Big Boy on his Off Air interview series.

In the recently published episode, they talked about a bunch of topics ranging from Sam and Nipsey’s childhood to the rapper’s untimely death that shook up the rap world. Toward the end of the interview, around the 1:07 mark, Blacc Sam opened up about the day his younger brother was killed in 2019. He remembered being optimistic that Nipsey would make it as they headed to the hospital but admitted to having his faith shaken when he ultimately passed. “Just couldn’t understand it. It was like the Twilight Zone after that,” he told Big Boy. “Everything I believed in — my faith was shattered.” Big then asked Blacc Sam if the murder was really as random as the public was led to believe, which prompted Sam to discuss the security protocol that was usually implemented whenever Nipsey visited his Marathon Clothing store.

“Somebody come to the shop, they know we in the doorway,” he said. “When Hussle pull up, we in the doorway. You’re gonna see me with a hoodie on and I got a pistol on me. You’re gonna see one of the team members in the hoodie in the doorway with a pistol. That’s protocol when Hussle pull up.

“So, it’s Sunday. It’s busy in there. Why the n—a in there didn’t follow the protocol? I wasn’t there. Why they didn’t follow it? Maybe they was f—king around, helping a customer who was doing some f—king customer service. This is what I’m thinking, trying to transition into some legitimate, just selling clothes. But nobody was in the doorway. From my understanding ol’ boy walked up with no shirt on first to check the scene ‘cus he knows what’s going on in that parking lot,” he said. “Had a conversation, probably seen no one was in the doorway, checked Hussle had on shorts, checked everybody else, left. They say he came back with a red shirt on. Tip-toed through the alley, went right and started shooting.”

He continued: “So, to me that’s premeditated. Number one, there’s no red shirts in the hood. Can’t buy no red shirt, no liquor store sell no red shirt. Number two, when a n—a come through the alley with the red shirt, that’s the throw-off.”

This year marks the fifth anniversary of Nipsey’s death. His girlfriend at the time, Lauren London, paid tribute to the late rapper on Instagram, writing, “If you know me You know March is always tough for me 31 days of holding my breath,” she said. “This day decided to fall on Easter Sunday this 2024 Interesting…. considering your name #GodWillRise Energy never dies…. I love you. Eternal.”

Nipsey was recently in the news because he has a posthumous verse on Rakim’s first album in 15 years. The legendary MC talked about getting a Nipsey verse in an interview with Billboard last month.

Billboard Explains traces the Mexican American band’s ascent from their first chart appearance — when Radicamos in South Central debuted at No. 35 on Regional Mexican Airplay in August 2018 — leading up to their latest album.

Notably, Pero No Te Enamores landed at No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart and secured a commendable No. 23 position on the Billboard 200 on the Aug. 10-dated list. This achievement shines even brighter considering the San Bernardino band’s foray into uncharted musical territory, creating a novel subgenre they coined “Jersey corridos.”

“When I first heard [Jersey club] about one to two years ago, I loved it. I was like, ‘Man, I wanna do something with it.’ I just didn’t know how. But I knew that when I did, they were gonna talk sh–,” frontman JOP told Billboard Español. “So when it got to the point to make a new album, I was like, ‘I wanna do Jerseys and dance music, I want to move something different but still keep the original Fuerza Regida [corridos essence] with the guitars.”

One of their career highlights was the release of “Bebe Dame” featuring Grupo Frontera, which soared to the top of the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. Their 2023 corridos-heavy album Pa Las Baby’s y Belikeada not only snagged their first No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart, but also reached No. 14 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

As Fuerza Regida continues to chart new paths and experiment with sounds, their journey remains a pivotal story in the evolution of Latin music on the global charts. Watch the full Billboard Explains video above for a deeper dive into their story, and check out our ranking of all 15 tracks from Pero No Te Enamores for more insight into their latest work.

Isaac Hayes Family Sues Donald Trump For $3 Million For Unauthorized Use of Song At Campaign Events

If you need any more proof that Donald Trump is one of the most unpopular and disliked people on the planet, you need to look no further than the fact he can’t use any music during his rally events without being hit with cease and desists or hit with lawsuits.

Spotted on Variety, the family of the late musician/actor Isaac Hayes is suing the orange menace, Donald Trump, for his continued unauthorized use of “Hold On, I’m Coming” at his campaign events.

Documents shared on Hayes’ social media accounts detail the family’s demand that Trump stop playing the song and pay $3 million for unauthorized use between 2022 and 2024. The documents note that the copyright has been infringed upon 134 times.

Hayes did not sing the song, but he wrote the iconic record for the R&B group Sam & Dave, which means his estate owns the rights to the music.

Per Variety:

In the letter, Hayes’ family also asked that all videos featuring Trump using the song be taken down and requested that an official statement is released from Trump’s campaign acknowledging that the Hayes estate has not “authorized, endorsed or permitted” use of the song.

Hayes’ family went on to say that if these demands are not met, they will “take all legal action required to enforce the infringed upon intellectual property rights, including but not limited to sending third party take down requests and/or federal litigation.”

Isaac Haye’s son, Isaac Hayes III, shared a photo of the documents on Instagram, writing in the caption for the post:

We the family of @_isaachayes Isaac Hayes Enterprises, represented by Walker & Associates, are suing Donald Trump and his campaign for 134 counts copyright infringement for the unauthorized use of the song “Hold On I’m Coming” at campaign rallies from 2022-2024.

We demand the cessation of use, removal of all related videos, a public disclaimer, and payment of $3 million in licensing fees by August 16, 2024. Failure to comply will result in further legal action.

– The Hayes Family

This is not the first time the Hayes family has called out Trump for using the song.

Celine Dion Also Had Smoke For Donald Trump

The Hayes family was not the only ones to criticize the Trump campaign for not having permission to use music. Celine Dion’s management also called out Donald Trump’s campaign for using “My Heart Will Go On” at a recent Trump/JD Vance event.

It looks like the only music MAGA clowns can hear at Trump rallies is Kid Rock tunes and “YMCA” from the Village People for the foreseeable future.

Haley Joel Osment Thinks Kendrick Lamar’s Joel Osteen Mix-Up on ‘Euphoria’ Was ‘Intentional’

Actor Haley Joel Osment reacted to being referenced on Kendrick Lamar’s “Euphoria,” and he believes K. Dot purposefully mixed him up with pastor Joel Osteen on the Drake diss.

The Associated Press caught up with Osment at the Blink Twice premiere in Los Angeles on Aug. 8 to get his thoughts on Lamar’s apparent reference while naming films like A.I. and The Sixth Sense that HJO starred in around the turn of the century.

Trending on Billboard

“Am I battlin’ ghost or AI/ N—a feelin’ like Joel Osteen/ Funny, he was in a film called A.I. And my sixth sense tellin’ me to off him,” Kendrick raps on the track.

Osment recalled being in Ireland shooting for an upcoming movie when he received hundreds of texts blowing up his phone about Lamar’s “Euphoria,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“I was shooting in Ireland when all that happened and I got like a hundred texts in the middle of the night. I was like, what is going on,” he said.

While K. Dot actually names Texas pastor Joel Osteen instead of him, Osment believes he did it with intention because of Lamar’s attention to detail, which led him to think there’s a deeper meaning to the mix-up.

“I think he’s too precise,” Osment added. “I don’t know for sure and I’m not gonna assume that he knows my exact name, but the way I’ve heard people talk about that and certain analysis that I’ve read about it, I think that it’s an intentional scrambling of my name and that other guy’s name. Because Kendrick’s too precise to just make a mistake like that.”

Kendrick Lamar also later pulled Osment’s “I see dead people” line from The Sixth Sense to open the Cali bounce of his “Not Like Us” anthem, which topped the Hot 100 for two weeks.

Another Round: Shaboozey’s ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 for Fifth Week

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” adds a fifth nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Notably, the single, the singer-songwriter’s first leader on the Hot 100, is the first song to rule in streams, radio airplay and sales simultaneously since Adele’s “Easy on Me” in 2021. As “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” continues atop the Hot 100, it rebounds for a 10th week at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, notches a fourth week atop Streaming Songs and adds a second week atop Radio Songs.

Dating to the origin of Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart in January 2013 (when it joined Radio Songs, which began in 1990, and Digital Song Sales, which first published in 2005), “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” becomes one of only a dozen hits to have ruled in the Hot 100’s three metrics simultaneously.

Plus, as “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” tops the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a ninth week, it’s the first song to reign in streams, airplay and sales while leading both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs.

“A Bar Song (Tipsy),” on American Dogwood/EMPIRE (with country radio promotion by Magnolia Music), is from Shaboozey’s album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated Aug. 17, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Aug. 13. Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. “Cowgirls” is Wallen’s Billboard Country Airplay chart-topping hit with singer-songwriter Ernest. With Ernest absent that evening, Wallen had some help from Jelly Roll, who performed the song’s second verse and joined Wallen on the chorus.

Though Jelly Roll is seen briefly stumbling over a couple of the lyrics during the rehearsal moment, he comes back strong on the song’s hook, singing “long live cowgirls” directly to Bunnie XO.

Jelly Roll commented on Bunnie XO’s video, saying, “It’s all a product of being in love.” The end of the video reveals that the support served him well, showing performance footage of Jelly Roll and Wallen tearing up the song onstage with ease.

Wallen is known for his walk-out videos that showcase the singer-songwriter getting hyped up for his performances each night as he enters the stadium. Bunnie XO recently had a spotlighting moment of her own, sharing a TikTok clip of her own walk-out momentbefore one of Jelly Roll’s performances, with the walkout music for the clip being Wallen’s “Broadway Girls.”

Team USA’s Men’s Basketball Gold Medal Most-Watched Since 1996 Olympics

HipHopWired Featured Video

Basketball - Olympic Games Paris 2024 - Day 15

Team USA and its Men’s basketball squad will never live up to the lofty heights of the Dream Team of the 1990s and some fans realize the comparisons are both unfair and necessary. That said, the current Team USA team defeated Team France in a nail-biting gold medal game that was the most-watched contest of its sort since the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Team USA, which had a tough game against Team Serbia led by Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, took on host nation Team France’s Men’s basketball team with young standout, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, along with other fellow NBA players Nicolas Batum, Evan Fournier, Rudy Gobert, and Bilal Coulibaly.

On Saturday (August 29), LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant were the unofficial “Big Three” for Team USA with contributions from Anthony Edwards, Derrick White, Anthony Davis, Joel Embiid, Devin Booker, and Jrue Holiday. Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton saw limited playing time throughout the entire Olympics. Tatum, who just won the NBA championship this year with the Boston Celtics, did get some playing time in the gold game.

Deadline reports that viewership numbers were released and the event was the most-watched gold medal basketball game since the 1996 Summer Games with 22.7 million viewers reported during the late afternoon contest kicked off stateside.

Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, the Men’s gold medal game also earned the highest viewing numbers across NBCUniversal’s digital platforms with a reported 2.7 viewers per minute. This good fortune spread over into other sports with the U.S. Women’s National Team and their 1-0 triumph over Team Germany becoming the most-watched gold medal game for that sport since 2004.

Cool New Pop Songs: Addison Rae’s ‘Diet Pepsi’ is a Sugar Rush, and Potential Turning Point

Looking for some motivation to help power you through the start of another work week? We feel you, and with some stellar new pop tunes, we’ve got you covered. These tracks from artists including Nina Nesbitt, Sophie Thatcher, Lunar Vacation and more will get you energized to take on the week.

Coolest New Pop Song of the Week: Addison Rae, “Diet Pepsi”

Before artists like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were accepted as arena-level pop stars in the 2010s, they were largely dismissed by critics and adult listeners as Disney-kid performers, making music for the youth and not to be taken too seriously. A pop generation later, the designation previously bestowed to Disney Channel grads has been transferred to social media influencers — many of whom, from the D’Amelio sisters to Huddy to Bella Poarch, are trying to translate millions of TikTok followers into mainstream music stardom, and who are still largely brushed off by music-biz gatekeepers.

Addison Rae exists in that group, too: the 23-year-old Louisiana native is a true triple-threat as an actress, former competitive dancer and recording artist, who happens to have the fifth-most followers of any TikTok account. Last year, Rae’s debut EP AR contained some bright spots as a bubblegum project, and she popped up on the remix to Charli xcx’s “Von Dutch” in March alongside A.G. Cook, joining the Brat extended universe months before Brat Summer officially kicked off.

Now, with a newly signed Columbia Records deal, Rae has released her first solo single of 2024 — and after Rae’s past gestures at pop stardom, “Diet Pepsi” suggests that she could someday make the leap.

“Diet Pepsi” plays out like a Lana Del Rey song refracted through a radio-ready lens. Soda gets sipped and blue jeans get ripped during a backseat encounter with a dude in a gold chain, as Rae delineates between sexually charged exposition in the verses, breathless utterances in the pre-chorus and blissed-out falsetto in the hook (“When we drive in your car, I’m your baby / Losing all my innocence in the backseat,” she sings) — shifting keys on the final chorus to emphasize her yearning.

The “Diet Pepsi” music video, directed by Sean Price Williams, leans into the Lana-esque Americana haze, with rapid black-and-white clips communicating bleary lust and pinup-model iconography. Yet Rae also puts her own playful spin on that image, grinning while covering her face with the American flag and planting her lipstick on a car window.

Regardless of its future chart impact or role in preceding a proper Columbia Records album, “Diet Pepsi” is a promising step for Rae, as a beguiling pop track that establishes an aesthetic for the multi-hyphenate. The darkly shimmering sound is more mature than that of AR, but more importantly, it’s more clearly defined; Rae’s debut EP was impressive, but we’re now starting to get a better sense of who she could be as a recording artist. For Rae, “Diet Pepsi” might not be an immediate smash, but it could very well prove to be a turning point.

Here are some new pop songs worth checking out this week…
