Kit Harington Talks ‘Game of Thrones’ Backlash, Why Jon Snow Spinoff Got Canceled

It’s no secret that the final season of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones left much to be desired as it led to it’s hardcore fans campaigning for a redo of the entire six-episode season.

Now years after that lackluster of a final season has aired, the show’s standout star Kit Harington (Jon Snow) addresses the backlash that the show caught from the fans and why his Jon Snow spinoff series never came to fruition. In a recent interview with GQ Hype, Harington explained that he was surprised at the fans reaction to the final episodes saying, “I went in and everyone loved Thrones; I came out and everyone hated it,” Harington says. “I thought, What the fuck is going on?!”

Looking back on how things unfolded during that final season of Game of Thrones, Kit explains how he understands why fans might’ve felt a ways about how the series ended and pointed to fatigue on the part of the cast of the series for why everything seemingly fell apart at the end.

Per GQ Hype:

“I think if there was any fault with the end of Thrones, is that we were all so fucking tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer. And so I understand some people thought it was rushed and I might agree with them. But I’m not sure there was any alternative. I look at pictures of me in that final season and I look exhausted. I look spent. I didn’t have another season in me.” And the backlash to the final episode specifically? “Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn’t quite work.”

It wasn’t the acting at all, it was the writing. The writers didn’t pen a good enough ending to the saga. Just sayin.’

As for why his Jon Snow spinoff series is dead in the water, that subject is a bit more complicated. Without going into detail about what it would’ve been about and why it didn’t work out, Kit and HBO decided to play it “safe” and not give fans something else to complain about if the series turned out to be yet another struggle affair.

“I don’t really want to say,” says Harington, reticent for the first time in our conversation, “because it starts a whole thing.” Even now, the Thrones fandom can be vociferous. “What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no. And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way. We spent a couple of years back and forth developing it. And it just didn’t… nothing got us excited enough. In the end, I kind of backed out and said, ‘I think if we push this any further and keep developing it we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want.’”

We’re not gonna lie, we still would’ve tuned in regardless. We’re still lowkey holding out hope that HBO and it’s writers get their act together and revisit the world of Game of Thrones post-White Walkers. What other threat is out there? Could Daenerys Targaryen still be alive? So many questions that’ll probably never be answered. SMH.

What do y’all think? Should HBO still roll the dice on a Jon Snow spinoff? Let us know in the comments section below.

Katy Perry’s ‘Lifetimes’ Music Video Under Investigation for Possible Environmental Damage

Following the release of Katy Perry’s “Lifetimes” music video, an investigation has been opened to determine whether filming the clip caused environmental damage to the protected dunes of S’Espalmador, which are amid one of the most ecologically prosperous enclaves in Spain’s Balearic Islands.

The Environment Department of the Balearic Islands shared in a press release on Tuesday (Aug. 14) that the production company did not request the proper authorization before filming the music video. The Stillz-directed clip for the Dr. Luke-produced track, released on Thursday (Aug. 8) finds the superstar making memories in Ibiza and Formentera, as she spends the day on the beach before partying all night at the club.

Per the release, one of the scenes was filmed in the dunes of S’Espalmador, in a prohibited area marked by ropes. The Environment Department noted that the video is not a “crime against the environment,” but an infringement, as filming “can be authorized” when requested properly.

Chappell Roan Praises Miley Cyrus for Inspiration, Making Music That’s ‘So Authentic’ in 2024 Disney Legends Ceremony Intro

Chappell Roan has no problem giving flowers to Miley Cyrus. In a video posted on Monday (August 12) the “Hot To Go” femininominon ticked off all the reasons she admires MC, a day after Miley was honored at Sunday’s Disney Legends Ceremony during the finale to this year’s D23 fan event where Cyrus was inducted with a class that also featured Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett and Harrison Ford.

“The things that I admire about Miley Cyrus is that she constantly reinvents herself and always works,” Roan said in the full video of Roan’s introduction of Cyrus posted by Pop Crave. “For a lot of artists it can seem inauthentic or out of the blue, but she’s very open about her transformations artistically and personally. She’s so true to herself and puts out music that is so authentic.”

Trending on Billboard

Roan, 26, recalled her very first concert, which was Miley’s 2007-2008 Best of Both Worlds tour featuring the Jonas Brothers as the opening act. “She came down in a box from the ceiling. I was like, ‘How do I do that one day?’ I still think about it,” Roan mused. “I still think about the show. I’m like, ‘I want to be like Hannah Montana,’ to this day.”

The intro made sense, since Roan said she thinks there’s “a lot of crossover” between Cyrus’ career and her own. Plus, she added, “I’m such a fan, too. I love her fanbase. She’s got the whole world that supports her. She could do whatever she wants, which is something I want to do. Miley does anything and it works. Miley feels like freedom to me.”

This year’s Legends ceremony, hosted by American Idol‘s Ryan Seacrest, found Cyrus, 31, celebrated as the youngest legend inductee to date. It also included superfan Lainey Wilson — who got her start performing as a Hannah Montana impersonator — singing the Hannah Montana theme song, “The Best of Both Worlds,” which she told the star-studded audience was “truly a dream come true.”

Rachel Dratch Interrupts Jimmy Fallon Monologue With Hilarious Raygun Breakdancing Impression

After going viral for her performance at the 2024 Olympics, Australian breakdancer Raygun has now been immortalized on late night television thanks to Rachel Dratch’s hilarious impression of her on The Tonight Show Monday (Aug. 12).

During his monologue, host Jimmy Fallon only needed to mention that breakdancing made its Olympic debut at the Paris games this month for the live audience to start laughing in anticipation of where the segment was headed. After laughing at competition clips of the real-life dancer born Rachael Gunn — who scored zero points against the other country’s breakers — viewers got an extra surprise when Dratch entered the studio dressed as the Aussie breaker, mimicking some of her unorthodox moves.

The Saturday Night Live alum didn’t say anything the entire sketch, keeping up a bit that Raygun only expresses herself through dance moves. These included impressions of the Olympian’s kangaroo-like hopping and rolling on the floor. After wordlessly convincing Fallon to dance with her, Dratch boogied her way offstage and left.

Trending on Billboard

The skit comes amid reports that breaking will not be invited back to the Olympics in 2024, possibly marking the end of a very short lifespan for the sport’s recognition by the Games. This year, Japan’s Ami Yuasa won the women’s gold medal in breaking, followed by silver-winner Dominika Banevic from Lithuania and bronze-earner Liu Qingyi from China. The men’s category saw Canada’s Philip Kim take gold while France’s Danis Civil and the United States’ Victor Montalvo finished with silver and bronze, respectively.

Oates moved to Nashville in 2010 and embedded himself in Nashville’s Americana music community, releasing several solo projects, including 2020’s Live in Nashville and his most recent, 2024’s Reunion. He also teamed with My Morning Jacket’s Jim James to curate the Bonnaroo SuperJam in 2013 and was the creator and executive producer for the 7908 Aspen Songwriters Festival, which evolved into the national streaming charity fundraising event Oates Song Fest 7908.

Tencent Music Stock Falls 15% on Declining Revenue, Monthly Active Users

Tencent Music Entertainment’s stock fell by 15% on Tuesday after declines in the leading Chinese music streamer’s quarterly revenue and monthly active users overshadowed higher profit and paid subscriber gains.

TME’s revenues of RMB7.16 billion ($985 million) edged 1.7% lower this quarter from the year-ago quarter, and monthly active users for online music services fell by 3.9%. Mobile monthly active users of social entertainment fell by 31.6% in the second quarter ending June 30 compared to the second quarter in 2023.

TME executives remained upbeat about their ongoing efforts to convert free users to paid subscribers. The quarter saw a nearly 18% year-over-year increase in online music subscriptions to 117 million, driving a 10% expansion of the company’s monthly average revenue per paying user (ARPPU).

Trending on Billboard

“We have seen a steady increase in both online music subscribers and retention,” TME’s chief executive Ross Liang, said on a call discussing the company’s earnings. “We are delighted to see improved user loyalty on our platform, thanks to multi-faceted product and technological advancements that bring out increasingly engaging and entertaining music journey for each user.”

Quarterly profit was up 33% to RMB1.79 billion (US$247 million) compared to the year-ago quarter and up 17% from the first quarter this year. Revenue from the company’s online music services jumped 27.7% to RMB5.42 billion (US$746 million) thanks to music subscription revenues rising nearly 30% to RMB 2.89 billion ($403.8 million).

That drove the company’s gross margin up to 42% from 34.3% last year.

The number of paying users of social entertainment rose 5.3% to 76.9 million, but the monthly ARPPU for those users dropped 45.8%.

TME’s stock was trading at $11.16, down 15% at 12:25 p.m. in New York. While Tuesday’s sharp decline has contributed to TME’s stock falling by nearly 25% in the past month, the company’s stock is up 28% year to date.

De La Soul Announces NYC Show Featuring ‘Choose-What-You-Pay’ Ticketing Model

De La Soul announced plans for a New York City concert at the top of 2025, and they’re taking an atypical approach to ticketing options for the show.

According to the Lincoln Center’s website, fans are suggested to pay $35 per ticket, but will have options to pay more and less depending on what they want to do.

Per Brooklyn Vegan, it’s De La Soul’s first NYC show in 16 months. Pre-sale tickets will go on sale starting on Sept. 5 with the general public having their chance on Sept. 12.

Before returning home to New York in January, De La has a handful of festival dates that will take the Long Island-bred group to the West Coast and north of the border as well as across the pond for shows in the U.K., France, Belgium and more.

2023 proved to be an emotional rollercoaster of a year with the passing of co-founder Trugoy the Dove (born David Jolicoeur) at the age of 54. Following years of internal conflicts and label issues, De La Soul’s first six studio albums hit streaming services for the first time in March 2023.

The crew made a splash with their streaming debut while registering 12.5 million official on-demand U.S. song streams in the week ending March 9 and sold 28,000 albums, according to Luminate.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom clearly took the easy way out on a recent vacation, where, according to Perry’s Instagram feed, they spent a leisurely afternoon jumping out of a helicopter into the ocean. You heard that right. On Monday (August 12), Perry posted photos and video of the engaged couple getting hyped before leaping out of the chopper into the sea. Perry soundtracked the clip with a her current single, “Lifetimes,” and captioned it with a few lines from the dance banger whose Ibiza-shot video has a similarly beach-y, endless summer vacation theme.

“Like the stars are in the sky/ You and I will find each other / In every single life,” Perry wrote in the caption to the heli-hop post.

Perry recently revealed the track list for her upcoming 11-track 143 album (Sept. 20), which will feature “Lifetimes” and previous single, “Woman’s World,” as well as: “I’m His He’s Mine,” “Crush,” “Nirvana,” “All the Love,” “Truth” and “Wonder,” as well as three songs with as-yet-undisclosed features, “Gorgeous,” “Gimme Gimme” and “Artificial.”

The couple, who’ve dated since 2016 and got engaged in 2019, share three-year-old daughter Daisy Dove. The dive was not super surprising for Bloom, who risked life and limb in his recent Peacock series, Orlando Bloom: To The Edge, in which he went for a wingsuit flight, did a lung-busting free dive in the Bahamas and climb to the top of a 400-foot tower in Utah to stand on a tiny platform.
