A few weeks ago A$AP Rocky made waves when he seemed to have took some subliminal shots at Drake on his latest cut “HIGHJACK” and though the buzz has since died down, maybe a new video for the cut can get heads talking again.

Dropping off some new black-and-white visuals to “HIGHJACK,” A$AP Rocky gets his dapper don on as he styles in various spiffy suits as shadows play the walls in the background which show some thick women twerking to the beat and Rocky ducking Dracula’s hands?! Some pretty creep hand shadows, b.

Back in Detroit Big Sean goes the black-and-white route too and in his clip for “Yes,” Sean and his crew get turnt up in a warehouse where they smash TV’s, stomp the ground and lace the walls with cans of paint. Interestingly enough no one was smoking or drinking during this ruckus. Impressive. Just sayin.’

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Flee Lord, Tina, and more.

A$AP ROCKY – “HIGHJACK”

BIG SEAN – “YES”

FLEE LORD – “SNAKES IN DISGUISE”

TINA – “LOVER MAN”

ORION SUN – “SWEET”

NAPPY ROOTS FT. BENJI – “HOME FRIED”

JASONMARTIN & DJ QUIK – “FRESH WHITE T”

NIA SMITH & POPCAAN – “PERSONAL”

AUDREY NUNA – “SUCKIN UP”

New Radicals Release New Music for Democracy and Pen Open Letter to ‘Super Fan’ Doug Emhoff

Dear Doug,

When I got the call in June to join you at my local NY deli, Russ & Daughters, to riff for an hour on Big Oil, music and copyright in a tiny Secret Service swarmed kitchen I wanted to grab a bagel! Who knew that within weeks Kamala’s trajectory would change, and soon you’ll hopefully become America’s 1st First Gentleman. Congratulations Doug!

Learning you had been playing “You Get What You Give” hundreds of times since 2020 as your campaign “walk on song” touched me deeply — particularly when you told me you had selected the song merely as a music fan, not even being aware of the Biden family’s emotional connection to the song via Beau.

Needless to say, we were thrilled to get your personal invite to once again play our song live (as we did in January 2021 for the Biden inauguration), this time at the DNC just before Kamala’s introduction accepting the VP nomination. Of course, Kamala suddenly had bigger fish to fry becoming the presidential candidate, but thanks for blasting the record as your “walk-on” song at the DNC instead!

I’m writing this letter to you to send out an S.O.S. to all the artists and music people across America that the clock is truly ticking for us to save our democracy.

The time is clearly NOW for all to jump in and use whatever influence for the greater good and endorse the candidate who doesn’t “weirdly” (love that Coach Walz!) advocate taking away women’s rights and everyone’s freedoms. Or brags he’ll cancel America’s Presidential election in 2028!?

In that spirit, if we can talk music a moment, we are releasing the first New Radicals music in 25 years to rally the cause of democracy and encourage all artists to get out the vote. This isn’t some “comeback”; this is us doing our small part to support the fight for freedom!

As a musical gift to you, Doug, and our other fans, we’re releasing our version of “Murder On The Dancefloor,” plus our version of the Oscar-nominated hit, “Lost Stars,” from John Carney’s biggest music film Begin Again. It’s co-written by New Radical Danielle Brisebois who gave the world “Unwritten” and our film and Keira Knightley’s character’s songs their powerful female POV.

Listen to the New Radicals’ “Lost Stars” here and listen to “Murder On the Dancefloor” here.

Interestingly, we even learned through our mutual friends that Begin Again is headed to Broadway. We’re honored that co-star Adam Levine’s friends in Train are adapting what Adam declared the “perfect song,” and hoping Train adds more for Carney’s Broadway follow-up to Once!

Many people may not know that “Murder On The Dancefloor” was nearly our debut single, but then debuted as Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s bawdy hit which went Top 10 globally twice (this year from that dancing naked end scene in the often sadly “true to life” Saltburn).

When we spoke in NY, it was clear that you’re a family man of conscience who cares about his country and its people. It’s what makes Kamala and you true “new radicals” of the best kind. And anyone knowing Hall & Oates covered our “Someday We’ll Know” or king of critics, Robert Christgau, gave our album an “A” is pretty cool in my book!

In an era where a third of “Pizzagate” Republicans believe Taylor Swift is a Democrat Psy Op (who knew!?), it will be a breath of fresh air when the Harris administration passes critical things for the middle class. Like funding family and “frenemy” Village Troll mental health care in the states it’s most needed, or limits overpriced prescriptions that often “cost” more than a teacher’s salary.

For the record, New Radicals turn down every request from drug companies or anyone asking to change our lyrics (never!) and our publishers support that by saying “no problem.” We’d never morally support any type of industry that might contribute to an opioid epidemic that has already killed a million Americans.

Doug, I wonder what song these Silicon Valley jingle masseuses will try diseasing next, “Celebrex Sadness”? Well just a month past our July 12th, 25th anniversary — to any FDA Big banker Pharma’s out there…come around we’ll STILL kick your ass in!

We’re grateful our music is still inspiring some young “new radical” athletes and musicians who are jumping in too. Like BRAT Charli XCX who loves Kamala’s politics (and we beyond love Charli’s “1999” New Radicals video homage!), or Travis Kelce who tweeted “I’ve got the Dreamers Disease!”, which choked me up because that just means fighting for what you believe!!

In closing, Doug, sadly violence from toxic politics, BPD “biz con abuse bros” and Covid isolation has catalyzed much of today’s mental health crises leading to conspiratorial family criminality. But if anyone can heal or “prosecute” that, President Kamala Harris can — starting with RFK and Donald J Trump! Sorry, I had to sneak in a joke.

Democracy is at stake, not just in the USA but also in much of the world watching closely. With grieving artistic flourish for my own beloved Korean War vet Dad who tragically wrongfully passed mid-May, and my immobile, fragile Mom in memory care in Florida—don’t let the darkness shake down the light from the mothers and grandsons we’ll lose in the fight. Save democracy for the next generation and vote with your soul!

And to any DJs or TikTokers out there around the world, always feel free to play and use these songs to support and celebrate women’s, minority and LGBTQ+ rights and the spirit of freedom thriving and surviving around the globe!

Doug, Kamala—You got the Music in you. Go Lions!! Gregg

P.S. Doug, Since Broadway’s next to our favorite deli, if you’re in New York when Begin Again opens let’s grab that bagel and walk over with Adam and Train, Keira and John, Kamala and Danielle to all sing “Lost Stars” together!

P.P.S. VOTE!!!

“Lost Stars,” out on Flatiron Records, pre-save is here; “Murder On The Dancefloor” pre-save is here. Both are out on DSPs at midnight ET tonight.

Big Sean Apparently Responds to Baby Keem Biting Allegations: ‘Must Not Be Familiar’

Big Sean took to X last night and addressed biting accusations brought forth by some rap fans.

The Detroit rapper dropped the video for his month-old single “Yes” a couple of days ago and some immediately accused him of using Baby Keem‘s flow, leading to both rappers trending on X. “We really live in a world where baby keem has 40 year old sons,” one X user said, while another tweeted, “Kendrick and Baby Keem bout to send Big Sean a cease and desist.”

Later that night, Sean tweeted, “Must not be familiar wit my game,” seemingly in reference to the chatter online.

Fans tried to bring up Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar‘s (Keem’s older cousin) history of beef, but Sean recently told Charlamagne Tha God that they’ve settled things. “We already talked about it. I already got an apology for it,” he said in regards to a version of Lamar’s song “Element” that leaked in 2019. “I ain’t really had too much communication with him since then and you know, I represent a lot of people from my city from where I come from, fans of mine who think I didn’t stand on my sh—t and that’s not the case.”

Trending on Billboard

In that version, Lamar rapped, “Big Sean keep sneak dissin,’ I let it slide/ I think his false confidence got him inspired/ I can’t make them respect you, baby, it’s not my job/ You finally famous for who you date, not how you rhyme/ Cute ass raps, get your puberty up/ Then make you a classic album before you come at us/ Drake and Meek Mill beef might got you gassed up/ But I’m a whole ‘nother beast, I really f— you up.”

Big Sean’s sixth solo album Better Me Than You was originally expected Aug. 9, but he decided to push the release back and has yet to announce another date.

Bratz Re-Creates Doja Cat & Joseph Quinn’s Romantic Stroll in Doll Form

Bratz is paying tribute to one of the juiciest moments currently unfolding in pop culture: Doja Cat and Joseph Quinn’s rumored romance.

In a photo posted Wednesday, the “Paint the Town Red” artist and Stranger Things actor appear in doll form — Doja’s complete with Bratz’s signature pout — wearing re-creations of the outfits their real-life counterparts wore on a recent romantic stroll in London, their plastic hands touching. The Grammy winner models a mesh crop top and leathery knee-length skirt, while Quinn sports a blue button-down and slacks.

“Body so [tea] she’s dating a Brit! @dojacat @josephquinn,” Bratz captioned the post.

The rendering perfectly matches a photo taken of Doja and the A Quiet Place: Day One star on Aug. 17, looking very much like a couple a full two years after the rapper first confessed to liking Quinn in private messages sent to Noah Schnapp, who then got on her bad side by posting screenshots of the exchange to social media. “Noah can u tell Joseph to hmu,” she’d written at the time. “Wait no. Does he have a gf?”

Trending on Billboard

After Schnapp posted the DMs, Doja called him out on Instagram Live for being “so unbelievably, like, socially unaware and wack,” adding, “That’s like borderline snake s–t.” The child star quickly apologized, however, and both have since moved on.

Flash forward a couple years, and fans are now commending Doja on “manifesting” her seeming romance with Quinn. One day after the photos of them walking together were taken, a video surfaced of them once again walking through London on a different outing, this time showing the English actor rubbing the “Woman” artist’s back and touching her hip.

A$AP Rocky Explains Why He’s Delaying His ‘Don’t Be Dumb’ Album: ‘IM SORRY FOR THE WAIT’

A$AP Rocky‘s forthcoming fourth album Don’t Be Dumb was slated to arrive on Aug. 30, but in his new Billboard cover story that came out Thursday (Aug. 22), he revealed that he’s pushing the project to the fall.

“LEAKS & SAMPLE CLEARANCES ARE DISRUPTING THE ALBUM. ITS BEEN 6 YEARS & I WANNA MAKE THE BEST ALBUM EVER. IM SORRY FOR THE WAIT,” he wrote on X in response to NFR Podcast sharing Billboard‘s reporting about Rocky’s delayed album release.

The Harlem rapper (real name Rakim Mayers) told Billboard that Don’t Be Dumb will feature frequent collaborator and friend Tyler, The Creator and Morrissey and an all-star roster of producers, including Pharrell Williams, Mike Dean, Hitkidd, Madlib, Metro Boomin and The Alchemist. “I sat and I played the album for Tim Burton, and he was f—ing with it heavy,” he said, adding that the Beetlejuice director was “rocking his head” while listening to it. “He’s like, ‘Wow! I didn’t know you made that kind of music!’”

It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Taylor Swift Speaks on Vienna Shows & Receives a Tribute | Billboard News

Taylor Swift breaks her silence on the canceled Vienna shows, and Coldplay’s Chris Martin pays tribute to Taylor. Keep watching for more!

Tetris Kelly:

Taylor Swift is speaking out about her canceled shows in Vienna as Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Maggie Rogers pay tribute to her in that same stadium. Taylor Swift just completed a string of shows in London after having to shut down previous shows after authorities discovered a terrorist plot. She has now spoken out saying, “Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, but I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”

And if anyone thinks she took too long to address, she added: “I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows. In cases like this one, ‘silence,’ is actually showing restraint.” Coldplay has opened the doors at the same venue in Austria and Maggie Rogers joined Chris Martin for “Love Story” as a tribute.

Shortly after the project dropped last week, the Joker star and “Uptown Funk!” hitmaker gave “Die With a Smile” its live debut at Mars’ Thursday night (Aug. 15) concert at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. For the show, he wore a cowboy hat, while Gaga again sported bee-hive hair akin to her look in the music video, maintaining the song’s retro feel.

Following the drop, Gaga took to TikTok to share a video in which she’s seen singing along to her freshly released collab, rocking a bright blue eye makeup look as she sweetly cradles a tiny French Bulldog.

Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Greatest Love Story Never Told’ Views Skyrocket After Ben Affleck Divorce News

In the 24 hours after Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, streams on the former’s The Greatest Love Story Never Told documentary — which dove into the couple’s rekindled romance after a 20-year split — skyrocketed.

According to Luminate, U.S. viewership of the Prime Video flick jumped from 10.7k minutes watched on Tuesday (Aug. 20) — the day the singer filed to legally dissolve her marriage to the actor after two years together — to 354.1k minutes watched on Wednesday (Aug. 21). That makes for a 3,000% increase in just one day.

Chronicling the process of making her most recent album This Is Me … Now, the documentary found Lopez recounting how she and Affleck fell back in love nearly two decades after they called off their original engagement in 2004. They first dated in 2002 after meeting on the set of Gigli but called it quits two years later, only to get back together in 2021 and finally tie the knot a year later.

Trending on Billboard

The marriage marked the “Jenny From the Block” singer’s fourth wedding, following Ojani Noa, Cris Judd and Marc Anthony, with whom she shares teenagers Max and Emme. Affleck was previously married to Jennifer Garner; the exes are parents to Violet, Seraphina and Samuel.

“I never thought that he and I would get back together,” Lopez told Billboard of Affleck ahead of the premiere of Greatest Love Story Never Told. “I just just couldn’t give up on idea that there was something amazing out there for me, even when it got really bad — and it did at times. I always believed deep, deep down to not give up completely. It wasn’t until I got to the point where I was really OK on my own and not having to be in a relationship when I feel like universe kind of opened up and said, ‘Well here you go.’”

“Then to have this kind of crazy, strange, magical, surrealistic plot twist where I wound up back with that person, it was insane and it was also very inspiring,” she added at the time of the doc’s corresponding album, which debuted at No. 38 on the Billboard 200. “So I went back in the studio, and in the way that [2002’s] This Is Me… Then captured that first moment in time, I wanted to capture this moment in time.”

Indie Record Store Profile: Home Rule Records in Washington, D.C.

When Home Rule Records owner Charvis Campbell got a cold call from the Office of the Vice President of the United States on May 3, 2023, he felt the way most people would have when confronted by the same scenario: perplexed.

“It felt like an interview, like a background check,” Campbell tells Billboard. “When we were done, I was like, ‘Wait, this is kind of weird.’”

But the calls continued. Next, VP Kamala Harris’ representative asked if anyone from the Uptown Washington, D.C., record store would be in the shop that day and mentioned that someone from the office might stop by. Then, Campbell got another call from a different representative who strongly suggested he stick around. The next thing he knew, the Secret Service came to inspect the 2,700 sq. ft. independent record store — and then the vice president followed.

With a swarm of press around Vice President Harris, Campbell tried to help her around the store by asking what she might be interested in. “I’m like, ‘Okay, you want to talk about Coltrane?’ and she was like, ‘No, I want Mingus.’ She was looking for the real jazz,” says Campbell. “She had that keen sense to want some real hardcore music.”

Trending on Billboard

On May 9, Harris posted a video on Instagram that showed her walking away from HR Records — which specializes in used jazz, soul, R&B, funk and more — with three vinyl records: Charles Mingus’ Let My Children Hear Music (“one of the greatest jazz performers ever”);  Roy AyersEverybody Loves the Sunshine (one of her “favorite albums of all time”); and Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald’s “beautiful” collaborative 1959 album, Porgy and Bess

“It was one of those things that wasn’t planned,” says Campbell, adding that Vice President Harris asked about the challenges of running his small business and engaged with several people who happened to be in the shop. “It was very unexpected, but sincere in the sense of her enjoying the music and wanting to learn more about the shop.

“For me,” Campbell adds, “it was, ‘There’s a lot of other places you can be right now, but the fact that you took the time says you’re supportive of small businesses, but also of our shop.’”

After Harris’ visit and her subsequent clinching of the Democratic nomination for president, Campbell says there has been a notable increase in HR’s social media engagement, and out-of-town visitors will stop by to take a photo where Harris once was. It’s been a boon for one of the rare Black-owned record stores in the country (Campbell estimates there are only about 20 to 30 across the nation), not to mention for such a young establishment.

Campbell and his business partner Michael Bernstein opened HR Records in 2018 with no music business experience between them (though Bernstein had worked as an independent musician many years prior). Campbell had been driving up to Baltimore from D.C. on a regular basis to purchase vinyl from the small independent shop East-West Records until its owner, Bill Coates, informed Campbell the store would be closing for good.

“I would tease the owner and say, ‘Hey, if we bring this to D.C., we’ll make some money,’” says Campbell. “Being the wise sage that he was he said, ‘No, you don’t want to get into the record business.’”

Undaunted, Campbell bought Coates’ entire collection and quickly realized he needed to do something with it. Initially, the collection went into the back of an antique shop for about six months, before Campbell and Bernstein landed on a location for HR Records. In 2018, they opened their doors on 702 Kennedy Street NW and began selling exclusively used vinyl.

Kamala Harris

HR Records does not lack for inventory, with thousands of records packed into bins and decorating the walls. (“Too many to count,” says Campbell.)

In addition to vinyl, the store carries CDs and merch that each account for roughly 10% of its inventory. The other 80% is a curated collection of rare and used jazz, soul, reggae and African music records. While the store has participated in Record Store Day, Campbell found it overwhelming for such a small and niche shop. “I would prefer to have that ‘68 Blue Note on the wall as opposed to the reissue of it,” he says. “The reissue sounds great, but I’ll go for the original any day.”

To fill the crates with rare vinyl, Campbell has had to develop relationships with a lot of private collectors, which he considers the hardest and best part of his job. “Once we sell that amazing Sun Ra or Coltrane or Eric Dolphy record, it’s gone,” Campbell says. “That’s what I think [Coates] was getting at. It’s going to take time and effort to build up a place where people feel comfortable giving you their records so that records are coming in the door.”

It has taken years for Campbell to acquire many collections, but he says the effort has been worthwhile. Developing those private collector relationships has led to even greater opportunities, like creating The HR Music and Film Foundation, which was born from COVID-relief work the store did for musicians by hosting gigs at the small stage in the back of the shop, filming them and promoting the videos and artists on their social media. After roughly 15 shows, the HR team realized they could get more support if they formed a not-for-profit organization.

Today, the HR Music and Film Foundation produces live musical performances, concerts, film screenings and festivals. It also educates youth in the community through workshops, classes and hands-on experience, allowing them to develop confidence and skills in music production, audio production, filmmaking, photography and graphic design. The foundation’s first project was a documentary on Black Fire Records, a Black-owned independent jazz label that started in D.C. in the 1970s. In support of the film, the foundation launched a local outdoor festival with live music and an evening screening of the documentary in 2022. The third annual Home Rule Music Festival took place in June and the documentary aired on PBS in 2023.

“When I think of the work we’ve done now with our foundation and the documentaries,” says Campbell, “It’s about using the medium of film combined with music which is so powerful in terms of being able to tell stories and educate people and educate our community.”
