New Report Details The Disasterous Launch of Elon Musk’s Twitter Blue

Since Elon Musk reluctantly dropped $44 billion on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, he has been giving a masterclass on how to ruin something already good. A new report details how one of his ideas, Twitter Blue, was a disaster from the start.

New York Times report revealed that employees at X, formerly Twitter, tried to warn Musk about the dangers of his dumb idea, Twitter Blue, which allowed users to purchase verified blue checkmarks along with other features was a “dangerous” idea during a meeting at the company’s San Francisco office on November 9, 2022.

According to the report, Musk dismissed the employee’s concerns, telling them to be “adventurous” while eating the snacks in the office. Twitter Blue would go on to be the disaster his employees tried to warn them about as fake accounts with blue checkmarks began popping up instantaneously, spewing out false information and eroding trust among users.

Per The NYT:

“We’re going to be shooting from the hip in real time,” Mr. Musk said, fashioning his hands into a pair of finger guns.

Previously, Blue had been a small part of the company’s business, which relied on advertising for 90 percent of its revenue. Blue allowed a few thousand die-hard users to pay for premium features, like the ability to edit their tweets and customize the Twitter app on their phones, but it never gained much traction. To Mr. Musk, a Twitter obsessive who had purchased the company for $44 billion, the service represented an untapped financial opportunity.

Mr. Musk’s attempt to rescue a company he saw as a sinking ship was premised on the idea that he could persuade people — millions of them — to pay for Twitter Blue. That scheme, however, was doomed from the start by the haphazard planning and capriciousness of Twitter’s owner, whose nearly two-year stewardship of the company has cratered its finances and sullied his reputation as a generational entrepreneur.

Musk eventually shuttered Twitter Blue following its launch before relaunching it again, but the damage was already done, with the platform’s most famous users vowing not to pay for the service.

Phony Stark would also change the company’s name from Twitter to X, a very bonehead decision, and advertisers have shunned the platform.

The Tesla Chief has also begun pushing our right-wing conspiracies, restored Donald Trump’s account, and has endorsed the Orange Menace for president.

We really need Threads or some other app to give us a reason to kick X to the curb.

Taylor Swift Praises Charli XCX, Puts Rumors of Feud to Bed | Billboard News

Taylor Swift praises Charli XCX and puts fan rumors of a feud to bed with her comments. Keep watching to see what the artists had to say.

Tetris Kelly:
If you believed the rumors of beef between Charli XCX and Taylor Swift, they’re both speaking out without directly addressing said rumors. Some fans believed “Sympathy Is a Knife” off of Charli’s hit album Brat is about Taylor Swift.

“It’s so difficult being an artist, especially a female artist, where you’re pitted against your peers, but also expected to be best friends with every single person.” Charli made it clear before the album dropped that there weren’t any diss tracks on Brat, aside from “Von Dutch.” “And if you’re not, you’re deemed a bad feminist.” But we did see a song about Lorde get an epic remix.

While we don’t know if T-Swift will be on a remix of “Sympathy Is a Knife,” which Charli played for New York Magazine, Taylor told the mag, “I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011. Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.”

Taylor’s seen Charli’s work firsthand, when Charli was an opener for the Reputation Tour. When asked if she regretted the lyric that made most fans think “Sympathy” was about Taylor, she simply said no, and she was OK playing the silent game and letting the interview get awkward.

David Schulhof Launched His MUSQ ETF Fund Over a Year Ago. Here’s How It’s Doing Today

The Schulhof surname first became associated with the music business when former Sony America vice chairman Mickey Schulhof led the negotiations to acquire CBS Records in the late 1980s. But his son David staked out his own territory in 2006, when, backed by Trilantic Capital Partners, he used institutional money to buy music publishing assets from songwriters as a co-founder of Evergreen Copyrights — an early player in the song catalog gold rush that would extend into the 2020s. Schulhof and his partners later sold Evergreen to BMG for $80 million in 2010. Now, after spending about a dozen years as a publishing and business development executive for various film studios — as well as a two-year stint as a managing director of G2 Investment Group, a spinoff focusing on media assets for private equity firm Guggenheim Partners — the 53-year-old Georgetown University graduate is touting music industry stocks to retail investors through his latest undertaking, MUSQ Global Music Industry ETF.

ETFs, or exchange-traded funds, are essentially hybrids of mutual and index funds that enable investors to participate in the performance of publicly traded companies without buying individual stocks. ETFs tend to focus on a specific industry or investment theme. MUSQ (pronounced “music”) is an industry index fund that lets retail investors participate in the music industry’s growth through investments in 40 to 50 mainstream company stocks, including the three major-label groups, the major digital service providers (Spotify, Amazon, Apple and Alphabet), Live Nation, SiriusXM, LiveOne and Sonos. It also includes international music companies HYBE, Alex, CTS, Believe and HIM International Music.

Schulhof, who designed the parameters of the index — which is a passive investment vehicle — and serves as its sponsor, launched MUSQ on July 7, 2023, with $2 million in seeding from Goldman Sachs. That investment enabled the creation of about 100,000 shares in the ETF. On that first day of trading, it closed at $24.95. Today, the fund has grown to about 900,000 shares and is backed by the stocks of music companies that carry a net asset value of about $22.8 million.

On Aug. 6, MUSQ closed at $22.17 a share, a week after Schulhof talked to Billboard about his reasons for creating the fund, as well as its performance since its launch.

The MUSQ website lists you as CEO of the fund. If you are the creator and the chief executive, why doesn’t your name appear on any of the financial filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission? Jay Garrett Stevens is listed as the CEO in the annual report.

Once I owned the index, I licensed it. There are maybe a half a dozen white-label, turnkey service providers that manage and work with ETF investment trusts. In order to be listed on any of the stock exchanges, the fund has to be a trust. So I identified what I believe to be the best ETF service provider out there, Exchange Traded Concepts. If you go to their website, you’ll see they manage several billion dollars and something like 60 ETFs across all kinds of other thematic funds. Garrett is the CEO of ETC, and he is listed in all those filings like that, as are the names of [ETC’s] portfolio advisers.

Promotional materials that Schulhof handed out during MUSQ’s first day of trading.

Nina Westervelt

In that case, what is your role with the MUSQ fund?

I am the founder, sponsor, owner and CEO. I handle all marketing. I am the face for this fund. I’ve done tons of podcast interviews and things like Fintech.tv. When reporters call, I am the one talking about the results from Luminate’s midyear report, Goldman Sachs’ Music in the Air report or something Billboard may have written about. I’m also out there talking to investors, evangelizing about how the music industry is undermonetized, and cheap when it’s compared to streaming services like Netflix or Hulu.

How do your service providers work with MUSQ?

ETC is doing all the back-office work for me. They are the adviser and the trading subadviser. Here’s an analogy: If I buy a publishing catalog and outsource it to Kobalt to handle the collections, accounting and to deal with all the other back-office stuff, it’s basically the same thing. Meanwhile, VettaFi does the rebalancing of the index fund every quarter, aligning it with the eligibility requirements for the companies’ shares in the fund. I give those results to ETC.

Do you have any fiduciary responsibility for the fund?

No. What I do on a daily basis besides marketing is deal with all the compliance. I get everything cleared and [Financial Industry Regulatory Authority-approved]. And I need to get my appearances on podcasts and other media approved by compliance if I want to put them on our website.

What are the eligibility requirements for a company’s shares to be considered for inclusion in the MUSQ index?

Companies eligible for the MUSQ index either have to generate more than 50% of their revenue from music or they have to be a top five player in [music] streaming or content, live music, ticketing, technology or radio. If you look in our fund, we do have Apple, Amazon and Google, and clearly those names don’t generate more than 50% of their revenue from music, but they are among the top five players in the streaming category.

From the Desk of David Schulhof Founder/CEO, MUSQ

A plaque that the New York Stock Exchange presented to him on July 13, 2023, when he rang the closing bell.

Nina Westervelt

What other requirements or restrictions does MUSQ have?

No single stock can be greater than 5% of the fund’s overall holdings. It used to be 7%, but I lowered it. If a company has a good year and its stock comprises 8% of the index, it would be rebalanced at the end of the quarter. Other rules: No company can have less than a $100 million market capitalization or a daily trading liquidity of less than $500,000 per day. So those rules help give the index a good crosssection of small-cap, midcap and large-capitalization companies with liquidity. And I added a small buffer: If a company drops below $100 million in market cap, then their capitalization weight is cut in half. If the stock price continues to drop in the next quarter, it comes off the index.

Have any mainstream music industry stocks not met the requirements to be included in the index?

You may notice Deezer is not in our index. Even though it has over a $200 million market cap, it does not meet the daily trading liquidity requirement.

Have any companies been removed from the index?

IHeart was once in our fund but the stock is down 70%, so it is no longer in the index. The reverse is true if a small [music-related] company grows and now has a market cap greater than $100 million and it also has the required daily trading level of liquidity. Then it can become eligible. It has to have both ingredients.

When a big company in the index releases its financials, does it have much of an impact on the index’s share price?

Yes. The share price is based on the net asset value, but earnings do have an impact. Spotify right now has an average weight of about 3.4% in our fund, so it’s a top 10 holding. The stock crushed earnings in July, and year to date it’s up almost 70%, so that’s going to have a greater weight this quarter because it delivered stellar results. Other stocks like Believe and Tencent are posting positive returns that will have an impact on the weighting. But no single name can be greater than 5% of the fund. MUSQ pricing has been pretty stable during the past year [ranging from a high of $25.82 on July 31, 2023, to a low of $22.17 on Aug. 5, 2024].

Nina Westervelt

What happens when the stocks in the index aren’t doing well?

MUSQ is a highly diversified, uncorrelated fund. So when the markets are tanking, MUSQ is not tanking. Also, we’re not a meme play in any way. This is really designed to capture the growth and accurately track the global music industry. We view this as a long-term growth investment for investors.

Does MUSQ consist entirely of equity investments, or do you buy fixed-income instruments from these companies too?

They are all equities.

You say your fund is diversified by music industry sector, geography and genre.

The index has labels and music publishers that supply content, it has companies in the concert business, it has technology stocks, and those companies are diversified by genre. Also, the index is diversified across many countries. Today, it looks like 49% is U.S., 21% is Korean, 11% is Japan. If you go to the index page on our website, it will give you a breakdown. Internationally, we’ve got some exciting companies: Tencent in China, CTS Eventim in Germany, Hipgnosis in the U.K., Believe in France. And then we’ve got 10 or 11 K-pop stocks like Genie Music Corp and Cocoa, [and] the two biggest streaming companies in South Korea, HYBE and YG Entertainment. We have companies like Cloud Music and Avex in Japan and Amuse, one of the biggest content companies in Taiwan.

Does having international companies make the index more attractive to investors?

All the international companies in this fund trade in local currencies. You would have to open up local accounts to trade them, and that costs fees. MUSQ creates a very liquid, convenient and portable way for investors to have access to all these exciting companies.

Nina Westervelt

How did you do on Hipgnosis?

Hipgnosis was 2.3% weight in our fund and because Blackstone is taking it private, it is up 42%, so we made money on it.

Your fund has grown from $2 million in assets to over $20 million in assets. What’s the next goal?

To reach $25 million. A lot of financial firms have that as a minimum before they offer it to their customer. Beyond that, it’s $50 million. If the MUSQ fund gets to that point, it would have hundreds of thousands of financial advisers offering it as an investment option.

Nicki Minaj Sued By Fan For $5M Over Alleged Slander

Nicki Minaj is dealing with a new legal battle, this time with a fan who claimed that she relentlessly slandered him online.

According to reports, Nicki Minaj is being sued by a former fan who alleges that the rap star humiliated him by slandering him repeatedly despite his avid support of her. The lawsuit was filed in a Los Angeles, California, court by Tameer Peak. Peak is suing for $5 million in damages for reputational harm, financial loss, and emotional distress. In the documents of the lawsuit, Peak states that he has been one of Nicki Minaj’s biggest fans for over 15 years and was instrumental in the social media promotion of Pink Friday 2, which was a boost to her career.

Peak says that the relationship changed amid the “Nicki Hate Train,” which took place in 2017 where the rapper accused several fans of hers of being moles who were tasked with sabotaging her. He also claims that Minaj berated him on an Instagram livestream that had over 100,000 viewers after inviting him to her hotel room to film, and that her husband, Kenneth Petty, assaulted him during a fan event at the 2020 Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida. The suit also claims that Peak received messages from other fans earlier this year to “stop saying dumb s–t,” and would fire insults at him in online sessions with fans, which included, “It’s clear they’re not necessarily, you know, a full basket umm at the picnic.” She also allegedly claimed the Newark, New Jersey, resident was on welfare and that he was a “stalker” who impersonated members of her team.

Peak has gained some notoriety in the past for being a superfan, having gained some fame for showing up to Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour in Philadelphia last year in an alien costume. “Mr. Peak has been harassing Nicki on social media for years on end to no avail,” said Nicki Minaj’s attorney Judd Bernstein in a statement. “He has now graduated to seeking to shake her down financially with manifestly false allegations and legally frivolous claims. He will regret having gone down this disreputable road when he is forced to pay her legal fees as required by California law.”

Swifties for Kamala Harris Aren’t Waiting Around for Taylor Swift’s Endorsement to Take Action

Taylor Swift doesn’t need to endorse Kamala Harris for her fans to rally around the Democratic nominee. Many of them already are, mobilizing on behalf of the VP under the name Swifties for Kamala.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, a few of the organization’s leaders shared that they don’t particularly care if or when the 34-year-old pop star publicly supports Harris, because their movement is much bigger than that. As 21-year-old Rohan Reagan explained to the publication, “We are doing this outside of her, using the platform of Swifties as a way to get people involved in the election.”

“Taylor did throw her support toward Joe Biden during the 2020 election, so it is possible that she’ll show her support again,” Reagan continued. “But Swifties for Kamala aren’t waiting for her to do that.”

Co-founder Irene Kim, 29, added, “We’re not trying to make her do anything — we do not speak for Taylor. Our movement is about the power of our community and how we can mobilize together.”

The interview comes about a month after President Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, appointing his second-in-command to take over the ticket. Since then, Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate and officially accepted her nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention — but Swift has yet to publicly show support for the attorney-turned-politician. There was a moment earlier this month when many fans believed the “Anti-Hero” singer subtly embraced Harris by posting an Eras Tour photo with what appeared to be a Kamala look-alike in the background, but so far, there have been no signs that it was purposeful.

Even so, many other musicians have stepped up to the plate to endorse Harris, including Megan Thee Stallion, John Legend, Pink and Stevie Wonder — each of whom has performed at various campaign events — as well as Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato, Quavo, Bon Iver, Barbra Streisand, Carole King and more. And in the meantime, Swifties for Kamala plan to continue advocating for Harris on behalf of the “Karma” artist’s fans, from raising awareness about the VP’s campaign to providing followers with voter registration resources.

“One of our goals is that we really want to make this almost a Swiftie safe space where people feel comfortable to be active in politics, especially younger voters and people who have never really participated in politics,” 22-year-old cofounder Emerald Medrano told Cosmo. “We combine voter registration information with, like, friendship bracelets initiatives. We’re bringing things from our fandom culture into a political space, which I think is a really cool way to help people open up and participate.”

Arrest Made In The Killing Of Sneaker Reseller Upscale Cracc

Earlier this summer, the sneaker community mourned the loss of well-known sneaker reseller. Javier Osorio-Mejia aka Upscale Cracc was shot and killed in an apparent robbery attempt in Soho this past June.

Now, two months after the tragic event, police have made an arrest in connection to the shooting. Fox 5 New York is reporting that 35-year-old Jayquan Straker was taken into custody and charged with murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. Though no motive has been revealed for the June 25 killing, many people assume it was a robbery gone wrong as Mejia was shot in the right leg three times, which ultimately led to his passing.

Fox 5 New York reports:

Sources told FOX 5 NY’s Lisa Evers that Straker, who’s accused of killing Osorio-Mejia, left behind his cash and his brand new Range Rover.

Osorio-Mejia was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he died.

Straker then fled in a black SUV, police said.

NYPD detectives and crime scene investigators spent many hours going over the scene in search of clues. Sources told FOX 5 NY’s Lisa Evers significant ballistic evidence was recovered from the apparent ambush.

Detectives also recovered cash that was left on the ground, along with the victim’s trademark lime green Nike sneakers.

Known for selling sneakers to hard-to-find sneakers to celebrities, Upscale Cracc was loved and considered a stand-up guy by those who knew him best.

Now that his killer has been arrested, maybe we’ll learn what led to the shooting and whether or not it was a set-up or a robbery gone awry.

Post Malone Charts 18 Songs From ‘F-1 Trillion’ on Hot 100, Including Every Collaboration

Post Malone is back with another massive week on Billboard’s charts, thanks to his new album F-1 Trillion.

The set launches at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated Aug. 31) with 250,000 equivalent album units earned in its opening week, according to Luminate. That’s the second-biggest week of 2024 for a country album, following the opening frame of Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter (407,000 units) in April. F-1 Trillion also becomes Post Malone’s first No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart.

All 18 songs from F-1 Trillion’s standard edition chart on the Billboard Hot 100 – including all 15 collaborations – led by former six-week No. 1 “I Had Some Help” at No. 2. Here’s a recap (all of which are debuts except where noted):

Rank, Title:
No. 2, “I Had Some Help,” feat. Morgan Wallen (holds at No. 2; spent six weeks at No. 1 in May-July)
No. 13, “Pour Me a Drink,” feat. Blake Shelton (up from No. 30; peaked at No. 12 in July)
No. 17, “Guy for That,” feat. Luke Combs (up from No. 36; returns to peak)
No. 23, “Wrong Ones,” feat. Tim McGraw
No. 25, “Losers,” feat. Jelly Roll
No. 34, “California Sober,” feat. Chris Stapleton
No. 40, “What Don’t Belong to Me”
No. 42, “Finer Things,” feat. Hank Williams Jr.
No. 50, “Nosedive,” feat. Lainey Wilson

No. 56, “Have the Heart,” feat. Dolly Parton
No. 60, “Goes Without Saying,” feat. Brad Paisley
No. 63, “Missin’ You Like This,” feat. Luke Combs
No. 65, “Hide My Gun,” feat. HARDY

No. 78, “Never Love You Again,” feat. Sierra Ferrell
No. 83, “M-E-X-I-C-O,” feat. Billy Strings
No. 88, “Right About You”

Trending on Billboard

(The standard edition of F-1 Trillion was released on Aug. 16 and sports 18 songs. Later on Aug. 16, Post Malone released a deluxe reissue, dubbed the “Long Bed” edition, with nine additional solo tracks by the singer.)

Post Malone also charts a 19th song on the latest Hot 100: Taylor Swift’s former two-week No. 1 “Fortnight,” on which he’s featured, ranks at No. 55. The haul marks a new weekly best, surpassing his 18 entries on May 12, 2018, when his album beerbongs & bentleys made its chart arrival.

With 15 debuts, Post Malone ups his career total to 95 career Hot 100 entries. Of those, 48 have reached the top 40, 13 have made the top 10 and six have hit No. 1. He first appeared on the chart dated Sept. 26, 2015, with his breakthrough hit “White Iverson.”

Multiple guests on F-1 Trillion make notable visits to the Hot 100. Thanks to his feature on “Finer Things,” Hank Williams Jr. tallies his fourth career entry on the chart, and first since “A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version),” with Chad Brock and George Jones, in 2000. Before that, he had last charted in 1964 with “Long Gone Lonesome Blues” and “Endless Sleep.” “Finer Things,” at No. 42, is now the highest-charting song of his career.

With her role on “Have the Heart,” Dolly Parton adds her 22nd career Hot 100 hit and second this year, after “Tyrant,” with Beyoncé. Before that, she had last charted via her featured turn on Brad Paisley’s “When I Get Where I’m Going” in 2006. This marks the first calendar year that Parton has charted multiple songs since 1985, when she logged two duets with Kenny Rogers—“The Greatest Gift of All” and “Real Love.”

Plus, Billy Strings scores his first career Hot 100 entry thanks to his featured appearance on “M-E-X-I-C-O.” The 31-year-old bluegrass star has already forged a successful history on Billboard’s rankings, including seven career entries on the Bluegrass Albums chart:

Peak Position, Title, Year
No. 3, Turmoil & Tinfoil, 2017
No. 1 (25 weeks), Home, 2019
No. 10, An OurVinyl Sessions (EP), 2019
No. 1 (9 weeks), Renewal, 2021
No. 1 (16 weeks), Me / And / Dad, 2022
No. 6, Meet Me at the Creek / Pyramid Country / Must Be Seven / Meet Me at the Creek (Live at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Winston-Salem, NC 3/4/23), 2023
No. 1 (5 weeks), Live, Vol. 1, 2024

He has spent 55 total weeks at No. 1 on the Bluegrass Albums chart in his career (encompassing the No. 1 runs of his four leaders). That’s the fifth-most since the list launched in 2002, after Alison Krauss (242), Steve Martin (83), Nickel Creek (82) and Old Crow Medicine Show (66).

Three of his albums have also reached the Billboard 200: Renewal (No. 82 peak), Me / And / Dad (No. 37) and Live, Vol. 1 (No. 58). He has also raked in six Grammy Award nominations, winning for best bluegrass album in 2021 for Home.

Angie Martinez to Make Directorial Debut With ‘God’s Favorite DJ: The Story of DJ Clark Kent’ Doc

Dubbed the “Voice of New York,” Angie Martinez has been a towering figure in New York City hip-hop radio for decades, being inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2020. She also became a New York Times best-selling author when her 2016 memoir made the list. And now she can add director to her accomplished résumé: The hip-hop journalist will make her directorial debut with a documentary about the important, yet often overlooked, DJ Clark Kent.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Angie had this to say: “DJ Clark Kent is a rare gem whose influence is seen in nearly every era of Hip-Hop’s history books. With our 50-year-old culture susceptible to outside perspective and agenda, it’s important that we spotlight the heroes who push the art form with purity and authenticity. I am honored to help share Clark’s many truths with the world.”

Born Rodolfo Franklin, the Panamanian-American DJ and producer was instrumental in the careers of Jay-Z, Foxy Brown and Shyne, among others. He’s produced tracks for the likes of Jay, Biggie and Mariah Carey, most notably “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Sky’s the Limit” and “Loverboy (Remix),” respectively. Kent is also a well-respected figure within the sneaker community, collaborating with brands like Nike and Adidas, and owning upward of 3,000 pairs of sneakers.

“I’m honored to have Angie Martinez directing. Her entire career has been rooted in telling stories in a beautiful & meaningful way. Angie is a true icon of Hip Hop and we are very lucky to have her guiding this project,” Kent told the outlet.

The documentary will be called God’s Favorite DJ: The Story of DJ Clark Kent and the synopsis reads as follows: “[This doc] tells the story of a man who spent the last four decades uninterruptedly as an architect, teacher, and unsung hero within Hip-Hop. The world class DJ, producer and sneaker aficionado takes us back to watershed moments when he single-handedly altered history; like when he convinced Shawn Carter to believe in the future of Jay-Z or taught the Notorious B.I.G. to perform like a star and coached Lil Kim through her first studio session. Directed by award-winning media personality and creator of the IRL (In Real Life) Podcast Angie Martinez, the documentary illuminates how much Clark’s DNA appears in several corners of present pop culture — from the stars for whom he composes music (Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Rick Ross) to his 2024 sneaker collaboration with Nike that now resells for over $10K.”

Produced in partnership with Green Leaf Productions and Mark Sparks Productions, the documentary will feature friends and peers like Jay-Z, DJ Khaled, DJ D-Nice and more.
