Bad Bunny to Join Adam Sandler in ‘Happy Gilmore’ Sequel

Bad Bunny is on to his next movie adventure, joining Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 — the sequel to the cult-classic sports comedy film released in 1996 — The Hollywood Reporter revealed Tuesday (Sept. 10).

There are no details yet about Bad Bunny’s role.

The artist born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio made his acting debut in 2021 as Arturo “Kitty” Paez — a rich, well-connected kid who gets involved in the cartel life — for the drug-dealing drama Narcos: México on Netflix. He then moved on to film, where he starred opposite Brad Pitt in Bullet Train (2022) and Gael García Bernal in Cassandro (2023). Up next, he has Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller Caught Stealing at Sony Pictures.

“It ain’t over,” Sandler wrote Monday on Instagram alongside a photo of Happy’s Boston Bruins jersey, signaling the start of production. “The way I see it… we’ve only just begun.”

The original Happy Gilmore follows the story of a failed hockey player who discovers a talent for golf and competes in paid tournaments to earn money to prevent the foreclosure of his beloved grandmother’s house.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the forthcoming sequel is directed by Kyle Newacheck, who also directed the 2019 Murder Mystery movie starring Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Original cast members Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald will return for the sequel: Bowen as Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest, and McDonald as Shooter McGavin, an arrogant golfer and the film’s villain.

On The Tonight Show last month, Sandler confirmed that Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce will appear in Happy Gilmore 2 as well. “Travis has… he mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis,” Sandler said of the gig that Kelce publicly pined for earlier this year. “He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

The screenplay was co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy and will be co-produced with Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds. Dennis Dugan, who also directed the original film, will executive produce with Judit Maull, Kevin Grady, David Bausch and Barry Bernardi.

Shailene Woodley to Star in Janis Joplin Biopic

“I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her,” Woodley, who will star in and produce the film, said in a statement.

“Thank you to the California Film Commission’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program — myself and the other producers on this project believe California is the only place to film a slice of Janis’s life with authenticity and truth — and we are so grateful to have received the green light to do so!” the Big Little Lies star added.

The Joplin biopic from Temple Hill qualified for just under $10 million in production expenditures for a 30-day shoot in California, according to the state’s film commission.

Joplin died in 1970 at age 27 and a biopic of the legendary singer has yet to be produced, but not for a lack of trying. Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, P!nk and Melissa Etheridge, among others, were earlier on board to play Joplin in movies that never got to production.

In all, the California Film Commission awarded $51.6 million in tax credits to 19 projects to shoot in the state. That also includes keeping the Universal Content Productions’ Suits LA series from leaving Los Angeles for a rival locale.

Suits LA is a show whose characters are deeply ensconced in the world of film and television. Being able to shoot here will be a huge part of the show’s authenticity,” Suits LA showrunner Aaron Korsh said in a statement.

Other projects qualifying for local tax credits include the reboot Community – The Movie, executive produced by Dan Harmon and Andrew Guest, and reuniting the original cast for this film adaptation and an untitled Screen Gems project.

Johnson & Johnson Hit With Lawsuit Claiming ‘Rampant’ Use of Unlicensed Music in Videos

Johnson & Johnson is facing a lawsuit that accuses the pharma giant of “rampant infringement” of copyrighted instrumental music in YouTube and Facebook videos.

In a complaint filed last week in Los Angeles federal court, Associated Production Music (APM) claims that J&J released nearly 80 different internet videos featuring unlicensed “production music” — an industry term for stock tracks created for use in videos, podcasts and other content.

“At no point did defendant ever obtain APM’s license, authorization, or consent to synchronize the Recordings with the Videos,” the company’s lawyers write. “Moreover, despite being repeatedly contacted by APM regarding Defendant’s unlicensed uses of the Recordings, Defendant has refused to obtain proper licenses or admit wrongdoing.”

APM, a joint venture of Sony Music Publishing and Universal Music Publishing, describes itself as the top purveyor of production music in the country, controlling huge libraries of songs that have appeared in TV shows (Stranger Things, Game of Thrones and Spongebob Squarepants), movies (Lady Bird, The Shape of Water and The Big Sick) and video games (Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and MLB: The Show). One particularly notable APM song is “Heavy Action,” the theme to Monday Night Football.

Trending on Billboard

Earlier this year, APM says it discovered that J&J had been using the company’s songs without permission. The lawsuit lists out 79 different videos featuring 30 different APM songs, like a YouTube video posted by J&J in May 2021 called “Nurse Leaders Disrupting Healthcare.” The video, which features an upbeat instrumental track behind narration, allegedly used an APM track called “Driving Inspiration” without securing a license.

The lawsuit is light on details, and it’s unclear how a sophisticated company came to release dozens of videos without securing licenses for the music. A representative for J&J did not immediately return a request for comment on the allegations.

Though the songs in question are hardly Hot 100 hits, intentionally using them without a license would still be a costly decision for J&J. Under federal copyright law, a judge can award as much as $150,000 per song infringed if a defendant acted willfully — nearly $12 million for all the songs involved.

Diddy Hit With $100M Default Judgment in Sexual Assault Lawsuit | Billboard News

Diddy has been hit with a $100 million judgment in a sexual assault lawsuit brought to him by inmate Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith. Keep watching for the full story.

Tetris Kelly:

Diddy’s been told to cough up $100 million in a sexual assault case he blew off.

Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith:

I’d like to either preserve the issue of default judgment or judgment in my favor based on failure to answer.

Tetris Kelly:

Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith claimed Diddy drugged and sexually assaulted him at a party back in 1997.

Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith:

He offered me $2.3 million to allow what happened to me to go away.

Tetris Kelly:

In a livestream of the court proceedings last week, Cardello-Smith claimed Diddy told him he wouldn’t be responding to his complaint and intended to settle outside of court. According to court documents, Diddy chose not to respond to the complaint after confirming receipt, so Judge Anne Marie Anzalone ruled in favor of default judgment, awarding Cardello-Smith the $100 million he was suing for. Given the large sum of money he now owes, the judge set a payment schedule of $10 million every month, starting October 1st. In a statement to Billboard, Diddy’s attorney strongly denies his client was ever served with the lawsuit, saying he “looks forward to having this judgment swiftly dismissed.”

Tory Lanez Confirms His Prison Cell Studio Was Shut Down, Blames The “Higher Ups”

Tory Lanez Confrims His Prison Cell Studio Was Shut Down

Source: Handout / Getty / Tory Lanez

The short Canadian rapper who was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion can no longer make music from his prison cell.

TMZ Hip Hop exclusively reported that Tory Lanez’s weekly release of “Prison Tapes” came to an end after prison guards raided his cell block and relieved him of his studio equipment.

Tory Lanez is currently serving out his 10-year prison sentence at California Correctional Institution for shooting Megan Thee Stallion and, somehow, found a way to continue his music career while being behind bars.

The artist, born Daystar Peterson, confirmed the terrible news (we’re being sarcastic) to his loyal fans in a statement via his Instagram account. He blamed the “higher-ups” for taking his equipment, claiming it was in retaliation for using the “Prison Tapes” to help his fellow inmates obtain lawyers and reopen cases using royalties he was receiving from music he was making behind bars.

Here is his statement in full:

The rumors are true. ‘The Prison Tapes’ will be discontinued until further notice. However, I think it’s important that my fans know the truth about the crooked a** sh*t that’s REALLY going on here. My cell was not raided and trashed because I learned how to record myself in prison or because I created ‘The Prison Tapes. I was shut down because the ‘HIGHER UPS’ figured out what I was really doing with ‘The Prison Tapes’ and how many inmates were being helped in a life changing way because of them.”

Since the first day I-was incarcerated, all I’ve seen is blacks and other minorities receive the most cruel, illegal, and unfair punishment/treatment. For so many nights, I asked God to reveal his purpose in making me go through the ills of the prison system. I was later shown that purpose. I was placed in jail to suffer, to feel, and to witness firsthand the pain and oppression being inflicted upon the young black and brown men and women of my generation.

I knew I had to change this injustice. So, I made a plan that when I got to prison, I would figure out a way to record music and put all the proceeds towards the legal representation of my fellow inmates, giving them a once in a lifetime chance to go home to their families on appeal and resentencing.

Although the ‘HIGHER UPS’ have stopped ‘The Prison Tapes’ temporarily, they were too late to stop my overall plan. Since the month of July, l’ve afforded legal representation for 472 inmates and actively reopened 476 cases. With the help of legal firm ‘UNITE THE PEOPLE, so many inmates will be returned to their families and loved ones. I’m naming this ‘The Hands of God Project. Lastly, they know I’m a threat and they don’t want me saying or doing this so if ANYTHING happens to me, just know I went out in the blaze of glory trying to revolutionize the end of a mass incarceration era on our people.

Social Media Has Thoughts

To be expected, Lanez’s fans, aka his “Umbrellas” are eating this story up and are praising the “Say It” crafter for going above and beyond for his fellow inmates, while blaming the two biggest boogy men in the industry right now, Jay-Z and Roc Nation.

“Tory Lanez is gonna be a way bigger artist when he comes home. Then he and others can take care of this Roc Nation problem,” one person on X, formerly Twitter, wrote.

Others feel no remorse for the convicted felon. Another person on X wrote, “You don’t get to shoot a black woman over a minor fight and then claim that you’re fighting for black and other minorities in our prison system. Tory is a disgrace and literally set black men back with his antics. He should rot in jail. I don’t care.”

Welp, we guess that’s the end of Lanez doing his best impression of Lucious Lyon from Empire.

You can see more reactions in the gallery below.

1. Interesting how that works

3. Is it Megan? JAY-Z? or Roc Nation?

5. Roc Nation you will pay for your crimes

The Miami-Dade Police Department released the body cam video of Tyreek Hill’s arrest, and social media was furious over it.

On Monday evening (September 9), the Miami-Dade Police Department released the body camera footage of when star Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by officers. The video showed more of the incident that took place, causing more outrage from those who viewed it through social media. Officers detained Hill on Sunday (September 8) just blocks away from Hard Rock Stadium, where the Dolphins were set to open their season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The initial video sent out shows Hill being pulled over by a motorcycle cop, unsure as to why he was stopped.

In a thread by Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640, the officers are seen talking to Hill, getting his attention by knocking on the driver’s window. “Hey don’t knock on my window like that,” Hill is heard saying to the officer, who then asked Hill why he wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Another officer is heard explaining why they stopped Hill when Hill rolls the window back up, asking for a ticket after handing over his license. At that point, the receiver is ordered out of the car. Hill rolls the window down slightly to tell them he is getting out when the second officer begins to pull on the door to get him out with another officer joining in.

Hill is then heard on the phone with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. He’s then being placed in cuffs as an officer yells, “When we tell you to do something you do it, you understand? Not when you want, but when we tell you. You’re a little f–king confused.” Hill stands up after having been sat down, informing officers about his knee surgery but is then pushed back down. “Did you have surgery on your ears when we told you to put your window down,” the officer yelled. Other Dolphins players, including Calais Campbell, tried to intervene.

https://twitter.com/AndySlater/status/1833273674033463799?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1833273674033463799%7Ctwgr%5E6061e4fc2f0a8c1b4fa1e37bd092d7537dda3dfa%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Ftyreek-hill-police-release-body-cam-footage-of-detainment-before-dolphins-season-opener-230114871.html

The scene shocked many who watched the video, with calls for all officers to be fired. Attorney Ben Crump asked in a post on X, formerly Twitter, “Was this use of force really necessary?” Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels told the press afterward that one of the officers was suspended until further notice.

Beyoncé Gets Candid About Her Stardom | Billboard News

Beyoncé sat down with GQ magazine and got candid about who she listens to, her life and more. Keep watching to see our favorite moments from her cover with GQ!

Tetris Kelly:
Beyoncé is on the cover of GQ, and she’s being candid about pop stardom, who she’s listening to, she even had time to go to the movies, and answers that question about the visuals. We’re breaking it all down.

We’ve known Queen Bey to be a pop star for 25 years, but after her knee injury, does she think about retiring? She told the mag: “I retired from the formula of the pop star a very long time ago. I stopped focusing on what’s popular, and began focusing on the qualities that get better with time and experience. Good music and strong messages will never retire.”

So who does Beyoncé have time to listen to?

“I love Doechii and GloRilla, and I just heard That Mexican OT, he’s from Houston … He goes hard! I really like ‘Please Please Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter, and I think that Thee Sacred Souls and Chappell Roan are talented and interesting.”

And my favorite takeaway? She has time for Disney. She said, “The best movie I’ve seen this year is Inside Out 2. I think it’s brilliant.”

And when it comes to Renaissance and Cowboy Carter not having visuals, she stated: “I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice. The music is so rich in history and instrumentation. It takes months to digest, research and understand. The music is enough.”

The Carpenters’ ‘Christmas Once More’ Collection Will Be Released This Holiday Season

On Nov. 1, A&M/UMe is set to release the Carpenters’ Christmas Once More, a new collection featuring 16 Carpenters holiday classics, personally curated by Richard Carpenter. This newly remixed and remastered set includes fan favorites such as “Merry Christmas Darling,” featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, “Sleigh Ride” and “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays.” The album title is a play on the title of the duo’s 1973 pop smash “Yesterday Once More,” which was later used as the title of a 1985 hits collection by the duo.

The Carpenters have been associated with Christmas since 1970, the year they burst to stardom with “Close to You” (Billboard’s No. 1 Song of the Summer for 1970) and “We’ve Only Just Begun.” That holiday season, they released “Merry Christmas Darling,” a nostalgic Richard Carpenter-Frank Pooler ballad that reached No. 1 on Billboard’s annual Christmas Singles lists in 1970, 1971 and 1973.

Trending on Billboard

The song remains a classic. “Merry Christmas Darling” ranked No. 41 on Billboard’s 2023 list of the 100 best Christmas songs of all time. Melinda Newman praised the song’s “dreamy reverie” and especially Karen’s lead vocal. “Her vocal on ‘Merry Christmas Darling’ as she longs for her loved one, who is away for Christmas and New Year’s Day, is pure, sublime perfection. She conveys the perfect mix of yearning, sadness and hope since she knows, even though it’s unspoken, they will be joyfully reunited after the holidays. Over 50 years since its release, it’s still the soundtrack for any college couples separated during the holiday break.”

“Merry Christmas Darling” was re-released in 1974 with a torchy ballad version of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” on the B side. It was released again in 1977 with “Christmas Song” on the B side. Also in 1977, the Carpenters headlined their first holiday TV special for ABC, The Carpenters at Christmas. In 1978, finally, they released their first holiday album, Christmas Portrait. It coincided with the release of a second holiday special for ABC, The Carpenters: A Christmas Portrait, which featured film legend Gene Kelly as a guest star.

Christmas Portrait has logged 66 weeks on the Billboard 200. Among the duo’s albums, only Close to You has logged more weeks on Billboard’s flagship albums chart (87).

Richard had a unique idea for creating a near-continuous work that would mix hymns, pop tunes, vocals and instrumentals.  He did some of the orchestral arrangements himself, while others were assigned to Peter Knight and Billy May.

“With Karen’s marvelous leads,” Richard has written, “combined with an oversize studio orchestra and chorus, terrific arrangements, and timeless music, Christmas Portrait was, and is, an almost incomparable Christmas album.”

Enough material was recorded during the Christmas Portrait sessions to allow for the release of a second Carpenters holiday album, An Old-Fashioned Christmas, in 1984, the year after Karen’s untimely death at age 32. In 1990, Christmas Portrait – The Special Edition combined tracks from both Carpenters’ seasonal LPs with some additional material. Now comes Christmas Once More, which will be available in multiple formats, including CD, black vinyl, limited-edition gold vinyl, digital download, streaming and ATMOS.

There have been numerous indications in recent years of the Carpenters’ continuing audience appeal. A 1998 compilation, Love Songs, rode the Billboard 200 for 25 weeks. Carpenters songs have been featured in several hit movies, such as 2007’s The Simpsons Movie (which memorably featured “Close to You”). Both “Close to You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun” have been voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The Carpenters got an unexpected shout-out on a global stage in March 2023. While accepting an Academy Award for best original song for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR, M.M. Neeravaani said, “Thank you, Academy. I grew up listening to the Carpenters, and now here I am with the Oscars.” He then proceeded to sing his acceptance remarks to the tune of the duo’s Billboard Hot 100-topping smash “Top of the World,” a move that charmed the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and the global TV viewing audience.

Here’s the track listing for the CD edition of Christmas Once More.
