While many have expressed disappointment over the “snub”, Goldberg believes it wasn’t a case of being overlooked. “A lot of people are surprised — I don’t know why — that it didn’t receive a single CMA Award nomination,” Goldberg stated on The View.

“I don’t think she was snubbed, I think they just didn’t… it wasn’t for them.”

Goldberg’s perspective comes as part of a larger conversation sparked by the Cowboy Carter album, which marks Beyoncé’s foray into country music. Released in March, the album has performed remarkably well, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 – her eighth record to do so – and staying on the Top Country Albums chart for an entire month.

Despite the album’s commercial success, the country music industry has been slow to embrace it fully, a sentiment echoed by some of Goldberg’s cohosts.

Sunny Hostin expressed her surprise at the lack of recognition for two tracks in particular: Beyoncé’s reimagining of Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” and the original song “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

“I thought she would at least get nominated for those two,” Hostin said, referencing how even Parton herself had given Beyoncé her blessing to cover “Jolene,” even appearing on the track to introduce it.

“But, my mother always told me, ‘Find the audience that’s looking for you.’ This audience isn’t looking for her,” Hostin concluded.

Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in, pointing out that while industry insiders might not have been supportive, fans certainly were. “The Country Billboard charts do not lie,” she added. However, Goldberg reminded her that fans and voters don’t always see eye to eye.

Sara Haines rounded out the discussion by pointing out that awards aren’t necessarily the ultimate validation, remarking, “The best revenge is success.”

The conversation on The View follows comments made by Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, who has been vocal about his disappointment with the CMA Awards.

In an interview with TMZ, Knowles said, “There’s more white people in America and unfortunately they don’t vote based on ability and achievements. It’s still sometimes a white and Black thing.”

Knowles also referenced Beyoncé’s controversial performance with the Dixie Chicks at the 2016 CMAs, noting that the show never properly acknowledged her contribution.

Though the Cowboy Carter snub left many puzzled, the album’s chart performance speaks volumes. It dominated the Billboard 200 for two weeks and made Beyoncé the first Black woman to top the Hot Country Songs chart with “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

The album boasts a diverse lineup of billed guest artists, including Tanner Adell, Beyoncé’s daughter Rumi Carter, Miley Cyrus, Willie Jones, Tiera Kennedy, Linda Martell, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Post Malone, Reyna Roberts, Shaboozey and Brittney Spencer.

Among the many additional players on the album: 070 Shake, Jon Batiste, Ryan Beatty, Gary Clark Jr., The-Dream, Rhiannon Giddens, Paul McCartney, Pharrell, Robert Randolph, Nile Rodgers, Raphael Saadiq, Sara Watkins and Stevie Wonder.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump faced one another for their first presidential debate, and Hip-Hop Wired viewed the entire debate, capturing reactions from X, formerly Twitter.

On Tuesday (September 10), Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump met for their debate on ABC News. Trump seemed hesitant from the start, pausing in surprise as Vice President Harris strode over to greet him and introduce herself.

ABC News moderator David Muir opened the debate by asking Vice President Harris about the state of the economy and what she intends to create what she referred to as an “opportunity economy.”

“I believe in the ambition, the aspiration, the dreams of the American people,” Harris said. Trump retorted, reiterating his policy stance on employing tariffs against other countries, namely China. 

Harris sagely stated that President Joe Biden’s administration had to “clean up Donald Trump’s mess”, taking digs at the business mogul over his assumed orchestration of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attack and his response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abortion proved to be one of the more intense exchanges of the debates as Harris championed more progressive policies as Trump again equivocated.

Her poise and strategy of prodding Trump into baffling rambles provided one of the more incredulous moments of the night after she spoke about his rallies. “You will see during the course of his rallies, he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter, he will talk about windmills cause cancer,” Harris began, “and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. And I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you. You will not hear him talk about your needs, your dreams, and your desires.”

Trump angrily replied that his rallies were “the best,  then repeated a false claim from his campaign about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” he yelled. He was swiftly fact-checked by Muir.

With the looming specter of Project 2025 hanging over this upcoming election, Trump distanced himself from the plan after Harris’ initial answers tying him to it, claiming he hadn’t even seen the controversial document.

“I have nothing to do with Project 2025,” Trump said. “That’s out there. I haven’t read it. I don’t want to read it, purposely. I’m not going to read it.”

Abortion is one of the touchier subjects of the race and one that Trump and his running mate JD Vance have faltered on regarding their messaging. ABC News moderator Linsey Davis’ question led to one of the more intense serve-and-volley moments of the debates with Harris leaning into the more progressive side of the debate while Trump seemed to display once more his changing stances on reproductive rights.

Seizing on conservative voters’ concerns that Harris would change the fabric of the country, Trump referred to the Vice President as a “Marxist” in a key moment in the debate. “If she ever got elected, she’d change it. And it will be the end of our country. She’s a Marxist everybody knows she’s a Marxist. Her father is a Marxist professor in economics, and he taught her well,” Trump quipped, referencing her father Donald J. Harris.

Muir also asked Trump about his repeated attacks on Harris’ racial identity. “I don’t care what she is,” he said before again saying that “I read where she was not Black”. Harris responded that it was a “tragedy” and a “disgrace” that he would
resort to that, bringing up his calling for the death of the Exonerated Central Park Five as an example of his past bigotry.

The debate questions would move to foreign policy, where Trump criticized President Biden for his support of Ukraine. “You’re not running against Joe Biden, you’re running against me,” Harris said, turning to face Trump. Trump would jab Harris and the Biden administration on the withdrawal from Afghanistan, but she would counter by hammering him on his love for authoritarians such as Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Meme fans gathered plenty of fodder due to the expressions of incredulity from Harris, especially as Trump would get combative with Muir after several questions. While the microphones were muted, crosstalk could still be heard. The feature proved to be effective for Harris, allowing her to respond vividly through her facial expressions which could be criticized by certain pundits and outlets. There was also praise for Muir and Davis as moderators, who strived to give each candidate time to respond while working hard to avoid being steamrolled by Trump’s petulant moods after Harris’ answers.

Tim Walz Reacts to Taylor Swift’s Kamala Harris Endorsement, Salutes Her As ‘A Fellow Cat Owner’

Gov. Tim Walz has responded to Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as she runs for the office of President of the United States – and as a “fellow cat owner,” he’s happy.

Walz, the Minnesota governor who is Harris’ VP pick on the Democratic ticket for the President of the United States, was on MSNBC speaking to Rachel Maddow on Tuesday (Sept. 10) night, shortly after the 2024 presidential debate wrapped, when news broke that Taylor Swift had endorsed Harris.

“I am incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift and I say that as a fellow cat owner,” Walz said after Maddow read him part of Swift’s lengthy, heartfelt Instagram statement. “That was eloquent and that was clear and that’s the type of courage we need in America to stand up. We’ve seen it out of those Republicans who were at the DNC. We’ve seen it out of women who would like to have their personal lives kept personal but are forced to go out there because they nearly died because they can’t get abortion services in a pregnancy. And now you have somebody like Taylor Swift coming out making that very clear. This would be the opportunity, Swifties: KamalaHarris.com, get on over there, get things going.”

Swift’s statement was both a rebuke of AI content from late August that falsely claimed she had endorsed Trump, and an explanation of her political priorities in the upcoming election.

“Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site,” Swift posted on her Instagram immediately after the 2024 Presidential Debate wrapped. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris for President, Signs Statement As ‘Childless Cat Lady’

Taylor Swift has made a surprising political move, taking to social media to endorse Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.

In a post shared with her millions of followers, Swift expressed her admiration for Harris following today’s Presidential Debate, calling her a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and a “warrior” for causes she holds dear, such as LGBTQ+ rights and women’s reproductive freedoms.

The “Fortnight” singer endorsement follows a moment of reflection, spurred by a false AI-generated image of her endorsing Donald Trump, which had appeared on his website.

Flavor Flav, Dionne Warwick & More React to First Kamala Harris/Donald Trump Debate: ‘Doing All That Yelling & Lying’

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump faced off Tuesday night (Sept. 10) for their first-ever debate in the 2024 presidential campaign — and musicians took to social media to share their reactions.

The event, hosted by ABC News at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center, marked the first meeting between the two presidential hopefuls, with Harris walking over to Trump’s podium to introduce herself with a handshake to start the debate.

Dionne Warwick kept things short and sweet with her debate post on X, simply writing: “Doing all that yelling and lying.” Big Boi asked his followers for their thoughts, writing on X: “How do you feel about this Debate so far?” The Outkast rapper responded to the top reply — “Nobody answered a damn question. A sh– show. But good thing fact checking in real time is [fire emoji] — by posting, “Maaaan ! Same.

Bette Midler also referenced the live fact checking from ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis, who debunked a report that Trump brought up about Haitian immigrants eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio. “Now he’s spreading that lie about eating cats,” Midler wrote. “Muir says NO PETS have been harmed,” she added, referencing Muir letting the former president know that Springfield police have come out to say there are no reports of pets being stolen and eaten.

Social media was overrun with memes about the pet moment, with Flavor Flav joking: “Pet Shop Boys better stay inside and lock the doors. You too Snoop Dogg. And Pitbull.”

Childish Gambino Halts Remaining Tour Dates Over Health Concerns

Childish Gambino is on the North American leg of his tour which is in support of his final audio projects, Bando Stone and the New World & Atavista, under the stage name. Childish Gambino, otherwise known as Donald Glover, has put a pause on his tour citing health concerns.

Childish Gambino kicked off “The New World Tour” on August 11 in Oklahoma and was set to run well into 2025. Taking to social media on Monday (September 9), Glover shared with his fans that he’ll be taking time off to remedy his health issues to give fans the performance they paid for.

hey everyone. unfortunately i have to postpone the rest of the north american tour to focus on my physical health for a few weeks. hold onto your tickets. ALL tickets will be honored for the upcoming dates in north america when they are rescheduled. thanks for the privacy. thanks for the support. thanks for the love.

Glover was slated to perform in Houston on Sunday (September 8), the second show to be postponed on the tour but the first due to illness. On August 24, technical difficulties prevented a tour stop in Connecticut from going forward as planned.

It isn’t known how the makeup dates for the canceled shows will be handled but the tour was scheduled to head to Europe on Halloween before embarking upon a final third leg in Oceania.

Glover has said that Bando Stone and the New World and Atavista will be the last projects bearing the Childish Gambino name. A film project connected to the former is under production.

After two albums’ worth of breakup songs, fans of Olivia Rodrigo were ready to see their girl find true love — something she finally seemed to do when Louis Partridge entered the picture.

The public first became aware of the young pop star and Enola Holmes star’s romance in late 2023, right after the release of Rodrigo’s Billboard 200-topping sophomore album Guts, which was filled with angsty tracks many fans believed to be targeted at ex-boyfriends Adam Faze and Zack Bia. European Music Market at Risk of Falling Behind Other Global Regions: IFPI

The recorded music market in Europe is at risk of falling behind other global regions unless regulators enforce tougher protections for artists, creators and rightsholders, according to a new report from international labels trade body IFPI.

In Europe, music sales grew to over $8 billion in 2023, representing more than a quarter of global revenues (28.1%) and maintaining the continent’s long-held status as the second largest region in the world for recorded music sales behind the U.S. and Canada, according to IFPI data.

Europe’s prominent position is coming under threat, however, from other music markets that are growing at faster rates, states IFPI’s first-ever report focused specifically on recorded music in the European Union, published Tuesday (Sept. 10).

Last year, music sales among the 27 members of the European Union trading block — which the U.K. exited in 2020 — grew by 8.7% to 5.2 billion euros ($5.7 billion), says IFPI. While that places the EU below only the U.S. in total revenue terms, several other international markets are significantly outpacing its growth rate thanks to the widespread global adoption of music streaming services.

Examples cited by IFPI include China, which grew music sales by more than 25% to 1.3 billion euro ($1.4 billion) in 2023; Sub-Saharan Africa, up 25% to 85 million euros ($93 million); Mexico, up 18% to 454 million euros ($500 million); and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), which climbed 14% to 102 million euro ($112 million).

Although all of those territories are developing from far lower bases than mature EU markets such as France and Germany — and all have some way to go before they come close to surpassing EU music sales — IFPI said their rapid growth represents “warning signs” that the region is facing strong competition from its global competitors. Notably, some of those fast-growing music markets were virtually non-existent just over a decade ago.

The report, which is titled “Music in the EU: A Global Opportunity,” comes three months after European Parliament elections and ahead of the unveiling of the new European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, which is expected to take place later this month.

The new cohort of Brussels politicians will be responsible for monitoring and enforcing already passed EU legislation such as the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act and the AI Act, which all impact the music business to varying degrees, in some instances significantly.

“The EU is a vitally important place for music,” said IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley in a statement. “However, the data in this report shows us that other parts of the world are developing and growing rapidly and the EU risks falling behind.”

To ensure that the EU’s music market stays competitive, Oakley called on European policymakers to provide “legal certainty and protection for music rightsholders, supporting the development of responsible and ethical AI and creating a competitive playing field on which today’s dynamic music sector can evolve.”

“Today, European music faces great risk but also great opportunity,” Oakley continued. “How policymakers address these issues will help determine its future.”

An accompanying press release from IFPI said its research sets out how policymakers can help “secure a positive future for music at what is a pivotal time for music in Europe” amidst rising global competition.
The report notes that when adjusted for inflation, recorded music revenue in the EU last year was only 61% of where they were in 2001, the music industry’s revenue peak.

Specific areas in which IFPI says policymakers can support creators and rightsholders include effective implementation of the EU’s AI Act, which passed earlier this year, and upholding existing EU copyright laws preventing the use of copyright-protected works and music from being used for training AI systems without prior consent. AI developers must also maintain and provide records of the materials used in training and developing generative AI models that enable rightsholders to exercise and enforce their rights, says IFPI.

When it comes to individual EU markets, the report highlights the continued strong performance of domestic acts in their home countries. In the 22 EU markets where IFPI collects yearly chart data, on average, 60% of the Top 10s were tracks by domestic artists in 2023, compared to only 47% in non-EU markets.

EU markets fared less well in terms of top 10 global chart exports, which were once again dominated by U.S. artists like Miley Cyrus, SZA and Taylor Swift last year, though Latin and Central American artists, most notably from Columbia and Puerto Rico, also performed well.

Here Are All the Performers & Presenters for the 2024 MTV VMAs: Full List

The MTV VMAs are looking pretty good for 40. They have a red-hot host, Megan Thee Stallion; a highly credible show-opener, Eminem; and a cast of performers that includes two of the buzziest artists of the year, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.

The 2024 VMAs are set to air live on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 8 p.m. ET/PT from New York’s UBS Arena. Katy Perry, who won video of the year for “Firework” in 2011 and hosted the show in 2017, is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award and also perform a hit medley. (She’s the first person in VMA history to host, win video of the year and get the Vanguard – the MTV trifecta.)

Presenters include Cyndi Lauper, who won a Moon Man for best female video at the very first VMAs on Sept. 14, 1984. (The show is now more woke: The award is now referred to as a Moon Person all categories are gender-neutral.) Carson Daly is also set to present. Eminem will open the show just weeks after his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), became his 11th album to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. Just this week, his 2005 hits compilation Curtain Call: The Hits became the first hip-hop album ever to log 700 weeks on the Billboard 200.

Eminem landed eight nominations this year. His smash “Houdini,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, is up for six awards, including video of the year and song of the summer. In addition, Eminem is nominated for artist of the year and VMAs most iconic performance for his 2000 performance (joined by 100+ Eminem lookalikes) of “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am.”

If Eminem wins in just one of the eight categories, he will break out of a tie with Peter Gabriel for the most wins by a male artist in the show’s history (13).

Taylor Swift leads all artists with 12 nods this year. If she wins five or more, she’ll pull ahead of Beyoncé as the artist with the most VMAs in history. Bey currently has 27, followed by Swift (23), Madonna (20) and Lady Gaga (18).

Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph are set to make their VMA debuts by performing on the Extended Play Stage. Le Sserafim will make their U.S. award show debut by performing on the VMAs pre-show. 

General fan voting closed Friday (Sept. 6) on MTV’s website. Voting for best new artist remains active through the show.

With the addition of social categories, Swift still leads in terms of most nominations (12), followed by Post Malone (11), Eminem (eight), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter + SZA (seven each); Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo + Teddy Swims (four each).

Swift and Malone are not scheduled to perform, nor are such other heavily-nominated artists as Grande, SZA, Boone and Eilish.

The 2024 VMAs will air live on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT across MTV’s global footprint, including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1 and Univision.

Hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, the 90-minute live VMAs pre-show special airs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo.
