Marcello Hernandez has brought a new energy to Saturday Night Live as the breakout star to join the show’s latest cast of comedians. As a result, the 26-year-old has teamed up with some of his favorite Latin music artists including Bad Bunny (who he most recently impersonated) and Karol G. In celebration of the comedy sketch show’s 50th season as well as Hispanic Heritage Month, Hernandez is raising a glass to his achievements in a new campaign with Buchanan Scotch Whiskey.

The #ComoLoDigas campaign looks to celebrate and display the various ways that Buchanan’s 200% fans pronounce (and enjoy) the beverage, while demonstrating that “what may differentiate Latinos in language unites them in community,” the brand says in a press statement.

As a fellow 200%-er, the #ComoLoDigas campaign also has a personal connection for the actor.

“One of the reasons that it’s been a really cool experience to work with Buchanon’s is the 200% campaign, which is just highlighting people that are 100% their culture or their parents’ culture, and then also 100% American,” Hernandez says in an interview with Billboard. “I think a lot of first-generation people like myself can relate to that.”

Choosing Buchanan’s Scotch Whiskey seemed like a natural choice for the comedian as it was a go-to for his family.

“You spend a lot of time when you’re younger not drinking,” he says. “When you get old enough to drink, you just want something that’s familiar. I think that this was really familiar to me because of the family parties I used to go to. It’s like a household name, if you will.”

Part of the reason Buchanan’s tapped Hernandez to be the face of the campaign was through their effort to bring younger Lantino Americans into the forefront — especially as Latino culture and language in the U.S. has evolved over the years. The campaign also hopes to unite the different communities within the culture by celebrating 200% pride and uniting everyone no matter what form (or sound). Within the campaign video, the brand spotlights the various ways in which people have been pronouncing “Buchanan’s” over the years “based on their country of origin, cultural slang or even the neighborhoods they live in, ensuring the love for Buchanan’s Whisky remains, no matter the pronunciation.”

Latino culture in the U.S. and language have evolved over the years, with younger Latino Americans celebrating our nuances, not to create division, but rather to celebrate 200% pride and uniting us no matter what form (or sound) it takes. Below, ShopBillboard chats with Hernandez more about life as a cast member on SNL, his favorite artists and what he looks forward to most when Grande takes over as host.

You just had the premiere for the 50th season. Compared to last season, what was different about this premiere experience?

Well, this year we had Maya [Rudolph] and Andy Sandberg and Jim Gaffigan and Dana Carvie, who all stopped by to play characters of the Presidential race. Having them there set the tone for what season this is going to be and show you how important it is. I just think it’s beautiful, the relationship that people that have graduated from the show still have with it.

You also did a Bad Bunny impression for the premiere. Did he know about it beforehand?

I didn’t tell him, but I did keep him in mind. I didn’t want to ruin the little relationship that we do have, but it was fun. He’s somebody that before I met him, I was just a huge fan. It’s fun to dress up like somebody that you’re fan of.

What do you think is the secret to the perfect Bad Bunny impression?

I think there’s probably different ways to do it, whether he’s on stage versus off stage. Off stage he’s definitely not like a a crazy loud person, maybe the way I am, so maybe turning myself down a couple notches and being a little more chill. He has a grace to him that is fun to watch, and it’s hard to throw him off.

And then looking forward, Ariana Grande is supposed to be hosting soon — any dream sketches with her?

I don’t know if I have any dream sketches, but I do know that when I was 12 or 13, my family and I did a trip to LA, and we were at a restaurant and we saw her. Back then, my sister and I would probably watch her on Victorius and I remember just being like,”we have to take a picture with her.”

We did. There’s this really old picture of really young me with Ariana. Any sketch that we do together will feel like a full circle moment.

Are there any musical guests you’re looking forward to seeing?

Personally, all I listen to is Latin music. I think just having any Latin artist come by would be beautiful and would definitely have me dancing at 8H.

Annie Lennox Mourns Mass Deaths in Gaza on Oct. 7 Anniversary: ‘I Am for Ceasefire & Peace’

Annie Lennox is reflecting on the mass tragedies that have unfolded in the Middle East since Hamas launched its deadliest attack yet on Israel exactly one year ago.

Sharing a series of infographics via Instagram on Monday (Oct. 7), the politically outspoken musician took a moment to mourn all the casualties that have occurred over the past 12 months — from the 1,200-plus Israelis who lost their lives when Hamas descended on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, to the countless Palestinians (Associated Press estimates more than 41,000) who have died in Israel’s war efforts against the terrorist organization in the year since.

“This is a heavy day – one year after the events that were to create a ‘tipping point’ in this decades long situation of discord and brutality,” Lennox wrote. “I had always hoped things might change for the better.. but tragically – that is not the case. On Oct 7th 2024 we are looking at a potential ‘forever war’ situation, with the entire Middle Eastern region on the brink of being completely drawn into it.

“Today’s career politicians have no moral compass and the ‘never again’ understanding has evaporated in plain sight, with ‘human rights’ shredded into pieces,” she continued. “We humans are capable of tremendous achievements and indescribable atrocities.”

The Eurythmics frontwoman also encouraged followers to “reflect upon the sanctity of life..and the qualities of peace, compassion and empathy.”

“I am for ceasefire and peace,” she added in the comments. “That is ALL I call for. I deplore anti – Semitism as much as I deplore the killing, wounding and continuous displacement of children, women and innocent Palestinian civilians.

“And of COURSE I want to see the innocent hostages returned safely to their families,” Lennox concluded. “This tragically doesn’t seem to be a priority for [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu and his government.”

As the “Sweet Dreams” artist pointed out, the violence in Gaza has been unrelenting since the Oct. 7 attacks. As Israelis gathered to pay tribute to the people they lost that day with memorial services Monday, AP reports that Hamas was simultaneously firing rockets at Israel alongside Hezbollah, an allied militant organization from Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israel is continuing to assail both Gaza and Lebanon as tensions mount with Iran, and Palestinians are facing rampant hunger and homelessness across the country.

Lennox is far from the first musician who has supported a ceasefire amid the crisis. Dua Lipa, Paramore, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Reneé Rapp, Hozier, Muna and more have also all called for an immediate end to the violence in Gaza, while Drake, Jennifer Lopez, Adam Lambert and several more stars signed an Artists4Ceasefire letter to President Joe Biden and the U.S. Congress in October 2023.

Foxy Brown Addresses Jay-Z Relationship Rumors: ‘Y’all Want Me to Be Anti-Hov So Bad’

In a series of Instagram Story posts over the weekend, Foxy Brown attempted to debunk rumors that she and Jay-Z had a sexual relationship when she was underage.

Brown famously made her debut in 1995 on LL Cool J‘s posse cut “I Shot Ya” alongside Def Squad’s Keith Murray, the late Prodigy, Fat Joe and, of course, LL when she was just 19 years old. However, most remember her getting her start opposite Jay-Z on the 1996 hit single “Ain’t No N—a,” from his debut album Reasonable Doubt, and the two continued to feature on each other’s tracks, where she would often play Bonnie to his Clyde in terms of themes and subject matter.

Brown initially posted and addressed a screenshot of a tweet alleging Jay made her sign an NDA, among other things, calling it “fake news.”

“In icon business! Miss me wit that fake news,” Foxy wrote. “NDA? Ain’t a MF alive could stop my story. NDA on my sh– gon’ run 100 mill.”

She then posted a screenshot of a YouTube video saying she’s breaking her silence about Jay-Z and references one of her IG Stories where she tells someone, “My story will shock to your core! I don’t play victim. But I had to step away for a min, for my sanity, or I would’ve been dead,” in response to a fan giving her positive words about here resolve.

“Stop playin’ wit my name, dyin’ for a comment,” Brown said. “Can’t spin me with the sucker sh– to take Hov down. Betta ask bout’ the cloth I’m cut from.”

She then added: “Comprehension is a lost art” and “Y’all want me to be anti-Hov so bad. FOH. Post that.”

The rumors about their relationship started when Nas mentioned their alleged relationship on 2001’s diss song “Ether,” on which he rapped, “Foxy got you hot ’cause you kept your face in her p—/ What you think, you getting girls now ’cause of your looks?”

The rumors have ramped up on social media since Diddy was arrested.

From ‘Monotonía’ to ‘Soltera,’ Shakira’s Healing Evolution in 5 Tracks

Shakira unleashed Pies Descalzos 29 years ago, marking her third studio album following Magía (1991) and Peligro (1993). Since its release on Oct. 6, 1995, under Sony Music Colombia, the 13-track set co-written entirely by the Colombian artist and Luis Fernando Ochoa is a staple in Latin music thanks to its timeless songs such as “Estoy Aquí,” “Antología” and “¿Dónde Estás Corazón?”

The album’s commercial success put a then-emerging Shakira on the map, peaking at No. 5 on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart in summer 1996. But beyond its Latin pop and alternative rock fusions, it was the then-18-year-old’s lyricism that instantly enchanted and connected with fans.

Shakira was young. She was vulnerable. She was in love — and it all reflected in her compositions.

Over the years, her sound has consistently evolved, but her emotional lyrics have remained intact, drawing inspiration from personal experiences that mirror fearless versions of herself, now even more so, as a single mother of two.

Since her very public breakup in 2022 from her longtime partner, and father of her two children, soccer star Gerard Piqué, Shakira has gravitated to music as a healing method. Just last month, she delivered “Soltera,” a vibrant tropical tune about enjoying the single life. Her therapeutic breakup journey, however, traces back to her first collaborative effort with Ozuna, “Monotonía” — and evidently gave life to her latest studio album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.

Below, Billboard shares five Shakira songs that best showcase her healing evolution.

The Flaming Lips Star Steven Drozd’s Teen Daughter Is Missing, Band Sends Out Poster for Help

The Flaming Lips are calling on fans for help after instrumentalist Steven Drozd’s daughter went missing.

Both Drozd himself and frontman Wayne Coyne took to their social media pages on Monday (Oct. 7) to share a missing person poster of 16-year-old Charlotte “Bowie” Drozd, who has been missing since around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. According to the posts, Bowie was last seen on the monorail in Seattle, Washington, near the Space Needle.

Most recently, Flaming Lips performed in their Oklahoma City hometown for Summer Freak Out at OKC’s Zoo Amphitheatre in August. The group also recently celebrated their 40th anniversary, as they were formed in 1983 and, as a result, they performed their albums, 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 1999’s The Soft Bulletin, in their entirety.

“I think a big part of why we’re still together and still touring and still doing stuff that people are interested in is because we try to change with the times or change as we go,” Drodz recently told The Oklahoman of their longtime success. “A lot of bands, they make a couple of records, they get stuck in that one sound, and that’s just what they do for the rest of their career, whatever. And that’s fine. But I think that would probably kill us, if we did something like that. Even if it doesn’t seem like we’re going through any big changes, we feel like we’re going through changes. So, that helps us feel new and fresh.”

10 Takeaways From FORM Arcosanti 2024

Nestled amid the stark beauty of the Sonoran Desert lies Arcosanti, an experimental urban utopia designed by visionary architect Paolo Soleri.

Located roughy an hour north of Phoenix, Ariz., the remote futuristic eco-city drew roughly 2,500 attendees to the long-awaited return of FORM. First launched in 2014, the three-day music event became immediately beloved for transcending the typical festival experience. As modern festivals continue to compete in a grueling live events industry fighting to stay relevant while competing to be credited for the best-synchronized drone show or which dance stage had more LED screens, FORM rebels against the status quo by cultivating the meaningful connection between musicians and fans. And when it comes time for the music, there are no VIP sections or even artist backstage tents — just musicians walking amongst fans, equally admiring the architectural marvel of the property. And when it’s time to perform, the small stone amphitheater sets the stage for a community of present-minded individuals to sharing a cohesive moment, no frills, just music.

After a five-year hiatus, the festival returned even stronger this past weekend (Oct. 4-6) with a genre-blending lineup of killer acts — including Jamie xx, St. Vincent, Bonobo, Skrillex, Thundercat, James Blake and more.

Walking into Arcosanti is like stepping onto a movie set from a dystopian sci-fi flick. Brutalist concrete structures, bathed and baked in the Arizona sun, create a visually arresting contrast from the typical major music festival experience. But even after tickets for this year’s FORM sold out in less than 24 hours after the announcement of its return, the boutique festival never lost sight of the key elements that made it so beloved in the first place.

Trending on Billboard

Here are the top 10 takeaways from the weekend.

1. Stage Dive Into Sustainability

Arcosanti’s eco-conscious philosophy and commitment to sustainability permeated every aspect of the festival. Locally sourced food trucks like Tamale Shoppe and the Phoenix Culinary Collective offered up delicious and eco-friendly sustenance, while readily available water refill stations and a robust composting system minimized waste. The full event execution demonstrated a step in the right direction for the industry and was a tangible reminder that eco-consciousness and a great time can go hand-in-hand.

2. The Arcology Awakens

The festival stages weren’t just platforms for musical performances; the permanent structures are architectural marvels seamlessly integrated into the landscape and the festival fabric. The Amphitheater, which was topped by a parachute that allowed peeks of desert stars above, captured the intimate essence of St. Vincent, whose Saturday night set was a last minute addition to the lineup. She strummed away on her guitar, sharing moments of bliss with the mesmerized fans seated only a few feet away. Meanwhile, the grand archways of the Vaults stage pulsated with raw energy that enveloped fans in a vortex of bass-thumping sounds.

3. A Starry-Eyed Symphony

The Sonoran Desert transformed into a celestial canvas at night. With minimal light pollution in the remote area, the Phoenix Astronomical Society hosted evening stargazing sessions on the rooftop overlooking the main Amphitheater. On Saturday night, attendees were able to peek into a cosmic light show through high-resolution telescopes as Angel Olsen played in the background, for an experience that was pure magic. The experience was a poignant reminder of our place in the grand scheme of the universe, a feeling that resonated throughout the weekend, even when the music ended.

Beck

Rocco Avallone

4. Beck’s Back in the Desert

Beck, one of the festival’s late addition headliners, delivered a set dripping with nostalgia, tongue-in-cheek stage banter and sonic experimentation. From classics like “Loser” to cuts from his 2019 album Hyperspace, he masterfully navigated his performance, keeping the crowd energized and engaged. It was altogether a testament to his enduring influence and ability to capture the hearts of fans year after year.

5. Jamie xx’s Curated Chaos

Coming off the release of his latest album In Waves, Jamie xx took to the Vaults stage with a cigarette in one hand and beer in the other, clearly prepared to deliver. (Minutes before he went onstage, the British producer was seen still on his laptop, excitedly working on his set.) When the show started, the Grammy-nominated artist flexed his prowess, delivering a masterclass in weaving opposite genres into tunes that left the crowd pulsating with a sense of euphoria.

Overall, his performance was a testament to the beauty of FORM, in how it creates a sonic sanctuary for artists to comfortably experiment, an ambience that helped make it possible for Jamie to dance and smile onstage as he traversed bold transition, like going from trance mix of Ghetto 25’s “Don’t Stop” to a guitar-laden build-up to Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”

6. Kim Gordon, Forever a Sonic Siren

Sonic Youth legend Kim Gordon brought a dose of raw energy to the Arcosanti Amphitheater. Backed by a killer band, she revisited iconic hits like Sonic Youth’s 1990 song “Kool Thing” and showcased newer material that pulsed with an undeniable urgency. Her voice, a potent mix of vulnerability and strength, resonated throughout a crowd illuminated with moody lighting, reminding us of her enduring influence.

7. Bonobo Unhinged

Bonobo, largely known for his downtempo electronic and ambient soundscapes, delivered a bass-thumping, chest-pounding Saturday night set that invigorated a perhaps unsuspecting audience. With thumping house and high-energy techno mixes, he turned up the temperature and set the audience ablaze, a difficult task in the desert heat, but one he pulled off with style.

FORM Arcosanti 2024

James Blake

Rocco Avallone

8. James Blake, Bathed in Sunlight

The U.K. multi-hyphenate’s recent crusade against the live event and ticketing industry saw him filling up independent music venues and cathedrals across North America over the past months, making FORM an idea setting for his emotional sonic landscapes. His stripped-down Sunday afternoon set, which included “Retrograde,” “Say What You Will” and “Godspeed,” was full of intricate nuances and delicate compositions, creating a sing-along that allowed the whole crowd to let their inhibitions go.

9. Community & Self-Reliance

This year’s event was troubled by a record heatwave that brought temperatures up to 100 degrees for campers. (All FORM attendees stay in adjacent camping and glamping areas.) Rather than cover themselves in Crisco and lay on a desert rock to accept their fates, a sense of community and cooperation washed over attendees. The FORM community rallied by sharing umbrellas with strangers, making space for newfound friends to sit closely side by side in air-conditioned listening room activations and offering patience and understanding for the hospitality staff, who worked tirelessly to pass out cold drinks and water throughout the festival grounds.

10. Beyond the Music

FORM Arcosanti wasn’t just about the music, although of course it was definitely a major highlight. Workshops on sustainable living, art installations scattered throughout the arcology, a poolside dance party, ambient outdoor sound stages and hifi vinyl listening experiences offered loads to do beyond the music stages. It was, once again, a festival that encouraged a sense of exploration and childlike wonder. At its core, roaming directionless and absent of intent was sometimes the best way to discover the true beauty of FORM.

Davido hasn’t tipped his hand when it comes to special guests, but fans can expect plenty of surprises and appearances from his artistic peers.

Even without dropping an album in 2024, it’s been a banner year for Davido, who made history headlining Madison Square Garden for the first time in April.

“As Africans, we’re changing the narrative of being African in America. Years ago, it was a different thing. Now, when you say you’re African, you’re proud to say it, eat the food, wear the clothes, play the music,” he told Billboard earlier this year. “And [for] the people that are coming to experience African culture for the first time, I want them to leave knowing that they’re never going to forget this.”

On the music side, Davido teamed up with Angelique Kidjo for the buoyant “Joy” in August. The “Fall” singer’s Timeless album arrived in March 2023 and reached No. 37 on the Billboard 200.

Olivia Rodrigo Donates All Ticket Profits From First Concert in the Philippines to Women’s Health Charity

Olivia Rodrigo‘s first-ever concert in the Philippines was anything but sour on Saturday (Oct. 5), especially after the 21-year-old pop star donated all the net profits from her ticket sales to a charity supporting women’s health.

Shortly after the Guts World Tour stop in Bocaue’s Philippine Arena concluded, Rodrigo — who is half Filipina — announced her partnership with Jhpiego on Instagram. “been dreaming of this show for a whileeeee,” the “Vampire” singer wrote, sharing a video of herself waving to her fans on stage at the show. “my first time in the Philippines and also my biggest venue ever!!!!! thank you to everyone Manila for welcoming me so generously and making me feel so loved.”

“I’m SO stoked that all the net ticket sales from last night could be donated to @jhpiego through my fund 4 good,” Rodrigo continued. “I got to visit the organization while I was in Manila and was so impressed by the work they are doing providing healthcare to women and girls in the Philippines. It was the most special show and the most meaningful trip. to say I’m grateful doesn’t even cut it! Mahal kita.”

The three-time Grammy winner also included photos from her visit to the Jhpiego office, one of which showed her sitting around a conference table with a group of women and another of which found the star posing with people from the organization and a custom “welcome” sign. In another snap, she poses with a “Miss So Filipina” sash during her concert at Philippine Arena, a play on her Guts deluxe track “So American.”

Rodrigo has been supporting women’s causes throughout her eight-month trek via her Fund 4 Good, through which a portion of her ticket proceeds has been continuously funneled to local nonprofits that champion girls’ educations, reproductive rights and more. According to Jhpiego’s website, the organization is active in more than 35 countries across the world and provides life-saving health care to fight against conditions such as cervical cancer, malaria, HIV and complications from pregnancy and childbirth.

“We are beyond honored to be the nonprofit #oliviarodrigo chose to support during her first visit to the Philippines,” Jhpiego wrote in a statement on its Instagram Story. “Her generosity and commitment to women’s health will make a lasting impact. Together, we’re helping more young women and girls access the care and support they need!”

Claudia Brant Launches Cha Cha Cha Publishing With Warner Chappell to Develop Emerging Songwriters

After building a prolific career as a songwriter — having penned more than 4,000 songs and received multiple awards, including both SESAC and ASCAP Latina Songwriter of the Year prizes — Claudia Brant has launched a new venture called Cha Cha Cha Publishing.

Teaming up with Warner Chappell Music, Brant’s agency aims to develop emerging songwriters and producers while also providing them with music publishing services, ranging from creative opportunities to administration support, to help accelerate their careers.

The idea was born after Brant taught a Latin songwriting course at Berklee College of Music in spring 2023 that focused on song formation and structure, lyrical concepts, melodic development and effective lyric translations.

Trending on Billboard

“The exercises I gave my students were very difficult. If they want to be a songwriter, they have to be a chameleon because that’s who I am,” Brant tells Billboard. “I can write salsa, a bolero, a pop song, an alternative song, and I wanted to develop my students in that direction with challenging exercises. At this stage of my career, where I’ve practically worked with almost every artist there is and won all of these awards and recognitions, it’s time to give back and help the new generation.”

During the course, the Argentine-born hitmaker ultimately hand-picked three aspiring talents and signed them to Cha Cha Cha Publishing: Agua García, a Música Mexicana composer; Laura Prías, who focuses on Latin pop, urban, indie, regional Mexican and boleros; and Fco. Chandia, a young Chilean engineer and producer. The former two already wrote a song for Chiquis that will soon be released.

“I’m making them work really hard, and at the same time, they’re learning a lot,” says Brant. “The good thing — which I didn’t have at the beginning of my career — are all the strong connections I made throughout the years. I got them into the rooms with Mario Caceres, Joel Enrique, Luis Salazar, Rolo from Icon Music, and I want them to write in every genre, create new material, and fight for it.”

With a trajectory that spans over 25 years, Brant has written songs for Luis Fonsi, Ricky Martin, Camila Cabello, Alejandro Sanz, John Legend, Becky G, Calibre 50, Marc Anthony and many more. In 2008, “No Me Doy Por Vencido,” which she wrote with Luis Fonsi, topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for 19 weeks. She’s a nine-time Latin Grammy winner, including song of the year in 2009 for Fonsi’s “Aqui Estoy Yo.” In 2016, she was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“Claudia is a legendary songwriter and artist with a talent unlike any other,” said Gustavo Menéndez, president of Latin America and U.S. Latin at Warner Chappell Music, in a statement. “I’ve known her for years, and what I admire and respect most about her is how relentless she is. She has consistently stayed ahead and fought for what she believes in, all while being recognized at the highest of levels. I’m very excited to be working with her in this next phase of her career as she turns her talents towards helping develop other writers and artists.”

Brant explains that although she’s writing way less now than she did earlier in her career, she wants to ensure her mentees develop the kind of writing skills she’s honed over the years.

“I’m nurturing them with what I know and what I’ve learned throughout the years with this beautiful craft,” she says. “I tell them that they’re gonna have to write a song a day for the next 10-15 years, and to try to write in as many different genres as possible. That craft only comes from exercising and interacting with the artists. Creating music every day makes you grow. If you have the talent, the drive, and are willing to work, you’ll make it.”
