The ‘Washington Post’ Reportedly Loses 200K Subscribers After Refusing To Endorse Kamala Harris

The Washington Post has become the latest so-called progressive publication to feel the wrath of the fall-out following its decision not to endorse a presidential candidate in this uncomfortably tight race between Vice President Kamala Harris and the orangey-white nationalist who has normalized slinging lies and bigotry from the political stage.

According to anonymous courses cited in an NPR report, more than 200,000 people canceled their subscriptions to the Post after the publication announced it is “returning to its roots” by staying neutral in the race to the White House and declining to endorse Harris or Donald Trump.

It’s not terribly surprising that the Post is basically hemorrhaging subscribers, considering folks on social media put out the call to send a message to the Post and its owner, Jeff Bezos, that its readers won’t stick around if it won’t make an endorsement in an election this crucial.

From Variety:

On Friday, Washington Post CEO and publisher William Lewis wrote in an article on the paper’s website, “The Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. Nor in any future presidential election. We are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates.” The Post has endorsed a candidate in every presidential election since 1976, with the exception of 1988. Lewis, who joined the post in November 2023, was formerly CEO of Dow Jones & Co. and publisher of the Wall Street Journal.

As first reported by NPR, Bezos — who bought the Washington Post in 2013 — had recently decided that the newspaper would not endorse either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump in the 2024 election. The paper’s editorial board had already drafted an endorsement of Harris. Some observers (and, evidently, thousands of subscribers) interpreted the move as an attempt by Bezos to avoid getting targeted for attacks by Trump.

The fallout for the Post comes just a few days after the Los Angeles Times lost its editorial chief, who resigned over the publication’s relatively new owner,  Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, ordered the Times’ editorial board not to endorse Harris after endorsing a Democratic president in every election since 2008. Journalist Mariel Garza said in her resignation letter that it mattered that the largest newspaper in California declined to endorse “in a race this important,” and that “it matters that we won’t even be straight with people about it.”

“It makes us look craven and hypocritical, maybe even a bit sexist and racist,” Garza wrote. “How could we spend eight years railing against Trump and the danger his leadership poses to the country, and then fail to endorse the perfectly decent Democrat challenger — who we previously endorsed for the U.S. Senate?”

Yeah — this is the wrong time for major news outlets to choose silence in the name of pseudo-neutrality and objectivity. The choice between a non-fascist woman who will have worked in all three branches of government if elected and the guy from The Apprentice who spouts non-stop hate speech and propaganda is clear. The Post and the Times needed to do the right thing.

HYBE CEO Lee Jae-Sang Apologizes Over Leaked Company Document Critical of K-Pop Artists & More

HYBE CEO Lee Jae-Sang has shared a public apology following a partial leak of the company’s internal “Weekly Music Industry Report,” which boasted what some have called disparaging remarks about the K-pop industry, including some young artists.

The letter stemmed from a Thursday (Oct. 24) court hearing regarding the HYBE audit carried out by the South Korean National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee. The Korea Herald reported that Democratic Party representative Min Hyung-bae revealed the weekly document during the heart. Reportedly spanning around 18,000 pages, Rep. Min noted that the document contains unverified rumors and at times harsh commentary on very young artists, including minors, with alleged statements including, “They debuted at an age when they’re at their most unattractive” and “Surprisingly, none of them are pretty.”

In response to the leak, a letter by Lee that was posted on the company’s official website on Tuesday (Oct. 29) offers an apology “to the artists, industry stakeholders, and fans” who were upset the the revelations.

“This document was created as part of a process to retrospectively gather various reactions and public opinions on industry trends and issues,” wrote Lee, clarifying that it was shared only with “a limited number of leaders.” However, he acknowledged that it was “highly inappropriate” for the document to feature “provocative and explicit expressions directed at K-pop artists,” adding, “As the representative of the company, I acknowledge all the mistakes and take full responsibility.”

Lee added that HYBE is “reaching out to each agency individually to offer our apologies directly” and continued, “I am also sincerely extending an official apology to all the artists of HYBE Music Group who have been subjected to criticism due to the company.”

Lee further promised “to establish guidelines and strengthen internal controls to prevent such issues from occurring again” and added that the company has halted the creation of such documents. Near the end, he emphasized HYBE’s dedication to the well-being of all artists and its respect of the fans, committing to reforms aimed at contributing positively to the K-pop industry.

As the CEO of HYBE, I extend my sincere apologies regarding the HYBE monitoring document.

Regarding our monitoring document that was highlighted during the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee audit on October 24, I deeply apologize to the artists, industry stakeholders, and fans.

This document was created as part of a process to retrospectively gather various reactions and public opinions on industry trends and issues. Although it was intended to be shared only with a limited number of leaders to understand market and fan sentiments, the content was highly inappropriate. The document contained provocative and explicit expressions directed at K-pop artists, included personal opinions and evaluations of the author, and was preserved in written form. As the representative of the company, I acknowledge all the mistakes and take full responsibility. I am particularly sorry and distressed about the unfounded suspicions of reverse viral marketing that are not true at all, causing misunderstandings and harm to innocent artists and individuals.

I formally and respectfully apologize to the external artists mentioned in the document who have suffered damage and distress. We are also reaching out to each agency individually to offer our apologies directly. Additionally, I am also sincerely extending an official apology to all the artists of HYBE Music Group who have been subjected to criticism due to the company.

I acknowledge the lack of awareness among the leadership who received the document and, as CEO, I have immediately halted the creation of such monitoring documents. I promise to establish guidelines and strengthen internal controls to prevent such issues from occurring again.

Once again, I apologize to the artists, industry stakeholders, fans, and everyone who loves and supports K-pop for the pain caused by this incident. As the company’s representative, I commit to thorough reflection and self-examination to rectify past mistakes and prioritize the rights of all K-pop artists and respect for fans. We will do our utmost to contribute to the healthy development of the K-pop industry.

Thank you.

Kanye West & adidas Come To A Settlement In Legal Battle

The once successful partnership between Kanye West and adidas has reportedly been fully dissolved. The two parties have settled their legal battle.

As spotted on Sneaker News the apparel giant has confirmed that they no longer have any business ties to the rapper. During an third-quarter earnings call a reporter asked for an update regarding the brand’s current ties to Kanye West to which CEO Bjorn Gulden responded “There (aren’t) any more open issues and there is no… money going either way.” The Norwegian businessman went on to add “there were tensions on many issues (but) … both parties said we don’t need to fight any more.”

Kanye West and adidas originally announced their partnership back in 2014 after the “Stronger” performer claimed Nike failed to limited him to only creating sneakers. In 2015 YEEZY Season 1 debuted along his first adidas signature shoe. The Yeezy Boost 350 was a huge success with this model selling over 9,000 pairs in over 10 minutes. His line would go on to produce several iconic sneaker releases including the YEEZY 700, 300, Foam Runner and Slides.

On Oct. 7, 2022 adidas announced they would be ending the line after Kanye West made several antisemitic remarks. “Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness” a press statement read. Following the split adidas moved to exhaust all remaining YEEZY inventory via their CONFIRMED app and at adidas outlet stores.

Young Thug Co-Defendant Takes Plea Deal in YSL RICO Trial: Report

A co-defendant in Young Thug’s YSL RICO case has agreed to a plea deal, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The outlet reports that Quamarvious Nichols, 29, reached a plea deal with prosecutors on Tuesday (Oct. 29), in which he pleaded guilty to a single count of violating Georgia’s anti-racketeering laws in exchange for having several charges dropped, including murder and weapons charges. Per NBC News, Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker agreed to a negotiated sentence of 20 years for Nichols, though he will only have to serve seven years in prison followed by 13 years probation, including credit for the two years he’s already spent in jail. He had been facing a potential life sentence.

Nichols’ plea deal means only four other co-defendants remain alongside Young Thug in the trial, which is now the longest-running criminal case in Georgia state history following 10 months of jury selection and another 11 months of testimony.

“Stay out of all kinds of trouble,” Whitaker reportedly told Nichols in court while handing down the negotiated sentence. “Make this a birthday present to yourself, to your wife and your family.”

Young Thug, born Jeffery Williams, has remained in jail since his May 2022 arrest. His girlfriend, Mariah The Scientist, has stood by him while attending numerous court dates and making several jail visits throughout the case.

Last week, Whitaker was weighing whether to declare a mistrial in the case, sparked by an incident involving a state witness revealing “sensitive information” to jury members. If granted, a mistrial would require prosecutors to either restart from scratch or drop the case altogether.

“Ohnana” gave Kapo his maiden visit to any Billboard ranking when it debuted on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. tally in July. A month later the song peaked at No. 30 (Aug. 31-dated list), the same week he became Billboard’s Latin Artist on The Rise, and the track also reached the No. 60 mark on the Billboard Global 200 chart.

Kapo celebrates his first No. 1 on his Billboard chart career with 7.2 million audience impressions earned in the U.S. in the tracking week ending Oct. 24 for “Ohnana” (up 12%), according to Luminate. The song ejects Feid’s “Sorry 4 That Much” from the summit and sends it to No. 4, following its one-week reign.

“Ohnana” joins “Passoa” at its No. 18 peak on Latin Rhythm Airplay, Kapo’s first team-up with Jhayco. The latter is one of 29 tracks from Le Clique: Vida Rockstar (X), Jhayco’s third studio album which gave the Puerto Rican his third straight top 10 on Top Latin Albums and Latin Rhythm Albums in September.

“Ohnana” also reaches its No. 2 peak on the Latin Airplay chart, where Kapo joins nine other soloists who have reached the top two on the overall list in 2024. Here’s the recap of the 10 artists and their songs, where only Karol G makes for a female representation:

The song, which marks Hanlon’s first top 10 on a radio ranking in over a decade, rises to the top 10 despite a 2% dip in audience impressions, to 1.4 million, earned in the U.S. in the tracking week ending Nov. 24.

“Repetimos” is Hanlon’s third top 10 and first since 2013, when “I’ll Be There (Allí Estaré),” featuring Karlos Rose, landed at its No. 3 high. The arranger, previously reigned with “La Gorda Linda,” featuring Tito Nieves, for one week in 2005.

For Youtuel and Darell, both artists pick up their first top 10 performance on the tropical radio ranking. While the Orishas lead singer also scored a top 10 on a radio tally in 2024 through “Fría,” with Enrique Iglesias (No. 3 peak on Latin Pop Airplay in May), Puerto Rican Darrell last secured a top 10 almost a year ago, with the Ozuna and Maluma three-way, “Lollipop” (No. 7 on Latin Rhythm Airplay in December 2023).
