Pitchfork Music Festival - Day 2

It’s been four years since Hip-Hop lost a legend when MF Doom passed away on October 31st, and to celebrate the memory of the gifted lyricist, his estate has decided to drop some new work for his faithful followers to indulge in.

In some new animated visuals to “Vomitspit,” we follow a mini MF Doom creeping through his hood causing havoc and chaos to unsuspecting citizens of his city. We lowkey want an MF Doom animated series now.

J.I. meanwhile seems to be going through the motions with a lovely young lady and in his clip to “Get To Know Me,” the young rapper finds himself trying to mend his relationship with a shorty who seems fed up with their situation. Good luck with that, b.

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Jordyn Woods, Lojay, and more.

‘APT’ Drives YG Entertainment Stock Gain for Second Week; UMG Shares Slip Despite Post-Earnings Rally

YG Entertainment shares gained 4.3% this week as “APT” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars continued its hot streak. A week after YG’s stock gained 6.1% following the track’s blockbuster start on streaming services, the track topped both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. ROSÉ, a member of YG recording artist BLACKPINK, released “APT” through Atlantic Records in partnership with THEBLACKLABEL, a YG sub-label co-founded in 2015 by BLACKPINK producer Teddy Park. While YG continues to manage BLACKPINK, ROSÉ signed with THEBLACKLABEL for the management of her solo career.

Universal Music Group (UMG) shares fell 0.7% over the week but gained 1.6% to 23.45 euros ($25.52) on Friday (Nov. 1) following the company’s third-quarter earnings the prior day. Morgan Stanley raised its price target to 35 euros ($38) from 33 euros ($35.90). “Our conviction on UMG is as high as it’s ever been,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in an investor note. Guggenheim called UMG’s third-quarter results “encouraging” and maintained a 25.50 euros ($27.74) price target and its “neutral” rating on UMG shares.

Trending on Billboard

SiriusXM gained 4.7% to $27.65 after the company’s third-quarter earnings release on Thursday (Oct. 31) showed a net gain of 14,000 self-pay subscribers in the quarter. Despite the uptick, average revenue per user fell due to a “higher proportion of subscribers on self-pay promotional and streaming-only plans,” the company said.

Deezer shares gained 2.1% to 1.43 euros ($1.56) after the company’s third-quarter earnings showed 11% revenue growth and a 9% uptick in subscribers. New CEO Alexis Lanternier sounded upbeat about partnerships with MeLi+ and Mercado Libre, which has converted free trials at a rate “higher than our expectations,” in his words. Still, Deezer’s share price is down 32.9% year to date.

Reservoir Media fell 3.5% to $8.25 following its earnings release on Wednesday (Oct. 30) which showed solid 6% revenue growth. The stock did not get a bump from Reservoir’s slightly upgraded full-year guidance nor B. Riley’s increase of its price target to $12.50 from $11.50.

The 20-company Billboard Global Music Index (BGMI) was essentially flat for the week, rising 0.3% to 1,995.67 despite having just seven gainers as opposed to 13 stocks that lost ground. The small increase brought the index’s year-to-date gain to 30.1% and reversed the BGMI to the win category after it dropped 0.6% the prior week, breaking a streak of six consecutive weeks of gains.

Even a small gain outperformed many major stock indexes. In the United States, the Nasdaq composite fell 1.5% to 18,329.92 and the S&P 500 fell 1.4% to 5,728.80. Both indexes rose on Friday, however, as investors paid little attention to a weak jobs report and both Amazon and Intel jumped after reporting quarterly earnings. On Thursday (Oct. 31), Meta and Microsoft shares fell following their respective earnings reports, with Meta dropping 3% and Microsoft falling more than 5%.

Music streamer LiveOne was the greatest gainer of the week after jumping 32.8% to $0.77. The company announced on Thursday that it has engaged MZ Group to increase the visibility of PodcastOne in the investment community. LiveOne spun off PodcastOne in 2023 and retained an 81% stake. Investors may have taken note of MZ Group’s Chris Donovan’s statement that PodcastOne “owns intellectual property that can be sold for a significant return on investment.”

Outside of YG Entertainment, the other four K-pop stocks lost ground. HYBE fell 3.1% and increased its year-to-date loss to 20.0%. JYP Entertainment fell 4.2%. SM Entertainment slipped 0.7%. Collectively, the four K-pop companies’ share prices are down 28.6% in 2024.

iHeartMedia jumped 16.1% to $2.09 a week before the company reports third-quarter earnings on Thursday (Nov. 7). Another radio company, Cumulus Media, dropped 19.0% to $0.94 following its release of third-quarter earnings on Friday. The company’s revenue fell 1.8% to $204 million and it saw a net loss of $10.3 million, down from a net profit of $2.7 million in the prior-year period. “Looking forward, the advertising environment remains uncertain,” warned Cumulus CEO Mary Berner

BABYMONSTER Flex Global-Pop Appeal With First Full-Length Album ‘DRIP’

Led by the two singles “CLICK CLAK” and “DRIP,” the tracks make BABYMONSTER’s intentions of world domination clear with the multilayered linguistic and genre approach: “CLICK CLAK” is an English rap cut, where even the group’s powerhouse vocalists prove they can spit, while “DRIP” is a powerhouse K-pop jam incorporating dance music, hip-hop, EDM and powerhouse pop. G-Dragon (who also recently made his comeback to the K-pop scene) co-producing the latter and adding another level of sophistication and excitement, marking a significant co-sign from one of K-pop’s most iconic figures.

Both singles were accompanied by music videos that dropped this week with “CLIK CLACK” boasting more than 24 million views since its release on Wednesday (Oct. 30), while “DRIP” currently has a whopping 14 million views since its premiere less than 24 hours ago. Watch below:

Another prominent K-pop figure, Mino of WINNER, also contributed to the album, co-writing the throwback hip-hop/pop hybrid “Really Like You.” At the same time, BABYMONSTER also showcased their own creativity as members Asa and Ruka wrote on several tracks, including the special duo song “Woke Up in Tokyo,” which weaves Japanese lyrics into the mix.

Deeper into DRIP, listeners will also be treated to the acoustic cut “Love, Maybe” and the 2000s-tinged “BILLIONAIRE” (both sung entirely in English), and a standout in the emotional dance anthem “Love in My Heart.”

With the physical release of DRIP in the U.S. coinciding with the album’s global drop, BABYMONSTER has a strong chance of making a splash on the Billboard 200 chart later this month — a feat few K-pop rookies can achieve on first try. But until the charts feel BAEMON’s impact, fans can enjoy streaming DRIP, and check out the “CLIK CLAK” video below:

Spinnin’ Records Co-President Roger de Graaf to Retire After 25 Years at the Label

Spinnin’ Records president Roger de Graaf is retiring, a representative for the label has confirmed to Billboard.

De Graaf co-founded the Dutch label in 1999 alongside Eelko van Kooten, maneuvering it through several eras of electronic music and quickly evolving consumption models, from CDs to DSPs.

“In the beginning, we wanted to become the No. 1 dance company in the Netherlands,” de Graaf told Billboard in 2019. “Then we wanted to become the No. 1 dance company in Europe, and then the No. 1 dance company in the world.”

Spinnin’ became a pillar of the EDM era, with a roster including Afrojack and Martin Garrix, Tiësto, Martin Solveig, Nicky Romero, Sander van Doorn, and others. The company’s business structure also includes a flurry of artist imprints including Tiësto’s Musical Freedom and David Guetta’s Future Rave. In 2019, the label focused on international expansion, making inroads in the Brazilian market by signing Brazilian producer Alok and launching Spinnin’ Records Asia.

“Every time we had any success, we didn’t take a lot of time celebrating it,” de Graaf told Billboard in 2019. “We always wanted more and always focused on what could be our next success.”

Trending on Billboard

The success of Spinnin’ ultimately led Warner Music to acquire the label in 2017 in a deal reportedly worth more than $100 million. This transition saw van Kooten depart the label, with the exec going on to launch Ledo, a global digital distribution platform that partners artists with social media influencers.

In September 2023, de Graaf and Ewout Swart were named co-presidents of Spinnin’ Records. A successor to de Graaf has not yet been announced.

Young Thug’s Dad Wanted His Son to Keep Fighting Instead of Taking Deal

Young Thug‘s father isn’t too happy about the conditions of his son’s release from jail.

Jeffrey Williams Sr. spoke with local Atlanta news outlet 11Alive outside of the courthouse last night and admitted, while being grateful that his son is finally out, he was “startled” by his son’s decision to enter a non-negotiated guilty plea because he wanted Thug to keep fighting.

“Well, I was kinda startled behind it,” he told reporters before saying he agreed with his son’s lawyers to keep trying to fight instead of entering a guilty plea. “Let’s keep fighting, you know, let’s make them continue to embarrass themselves, but at the same token, I never tried to interfere with his decisions and I support him.”

He added, “I feel great that he’s going home, but at the same token, I still want him to fight, but that’s his decision. I raised him to be the man that he is. You know, I’ve always been in his life, from a pup to now. And I’m gonna continue to be in his life. As an adult, he has to make his own decisions.”

Thugger Sr. was then asked about some of the conditions of his son’s release, one of which included not being allowed to visit the Metro Atlanta area for 10 years. “I’m totally against that, because this is where he’s from. To have a district attorney take that away from him — she’s from another state — To see her take a man away from where he’s from, to have to go live somewhere else, that’s offensive to me. I’m really offended by that.”

He was wearing a hat featuring the name of DA Fani Willis’ opponent, Courtney Kramer, in November’s upcoming election. “In order for us to get back to our normal life, we gonna have to put in some more work. But the work that we need to do foremost for the city of Atlanta, Fulton County? We need to get rid of the poison that’s in our system, and that’s the district attorney’s office, so vote Courtney Kramer.”

Williams Sr. has been vocal about supporting his son and Gunna while they both were embroiled in this ordeal. He came to Gunna’s defense multiple times when the YSL member was accused of being a snitch by some peers and fans after he took an Alford plea

What Role Have Hip-Hop Artists Played in the 2024 Election? | Billboard Unfiltered

In this episode of ‘Billboard Unfiltered,’ Billboard staffers Carl Lamarre, Trevor Anderson, Kyle Denis and Damien Scott discuss the significant role hip-hop artists have played in the upcoming election by being vocal about their endorsements. They also react to Tyler, the Creator’s ‘CHROMAKOPIA,’ Lil Durk’s arrest, and the reasons more rappers are ending up in jail, and more!

Carl Lamarre:

I know you’ve said he’s in your Big 3. I think this has solidified it.

Kyle Denis:

I mean, last two albums won Grammys, he’s going to probably lock up another No. 1, hopefully, with this one.

Carl Lamarre:

I don’t think Ari got that kind of time or the patience to really try to play this indie game.

Trevor Anderson:

You really trying to put somebody away for, you know, charges that are going to be murder. You know it’s got to be multi-decade sentences, life sentences. All these kinds of things.

Damien Scott:

It really feels like rap kind of gave up this election. We kind of sat this one out.

Carl Lamarre:

Hey guys what’s going on and welcome to another episode of ‘Billboard Unfiltered.’

Damien Scott:

What’s good?

Carl Lamarre:

Gentleman!

Trevor Anderson:

What’s up?

Kyle Denis:

Yo, yo, yo.

C

And we’re back again, let’s close out this week in a good way. We got some music on Monday from a certain cat called Tyler, the Creator. His seventh studio album, ‘CHROMAKOPIA.’

Damien Scott:

I enjoyed the Monday release. I enjoyed the Monday morning-

Carl Lamarre:

It feels good right?

Damien Scott:

I enjoyed going to work, listening to a new album in the morning, on a Monday morning, starting the week with new music. I liked that, we should try more of that.

Kyle Denis:

If more releases are as good as this one, I am all for Monday’s.

Carl Lamarre:

You know, we could be on to something.

John Mulaney Doesn’t Understand Chappell Roan’s ‘Hot to Go!’ Trend in Hilarious New ‘SNL’ Promo

John Mulaney is not up to date on TikTok trends.

The comedian is set to host this weekend’s Saturday Night Live episode with Chappell Roan as the musical guest, and the duo appeared in a new promo released on Thursday (Oct. 31). In the clip, the duo stand alongside SNL cast member Ego Nwodim, who excitedly suggests that the trio can “do the thing.”

When Mulaney expresses confusion, Nwodim refers to the popular TikTok trend in which one participant says “I hope she does ‘Hot to Go!,’ in reference to Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess hit. However, in the trend, usually the scene jokingly cuts to something other than a Roan performance of “Hot to Go!”

Mulaney, still confused, tells Nwodim to “just ask” Roan to sing “Hot to Go!,” as she’s standing right next to them. “He doesn’t get it, girl,” Roan interjects, as she and Nwodim walk away, leaving Mulaney alone.

Saturday’s show will mark Roan’s SNL debut. The singer appeared to tease her next era earlier this month in an Instagram post in which she shared some selfies and hinted at the follow-up to her debut breakthrough LP. “Album kinda popped off imo but it is time to welcome a hot new bombshell into the villa,” she captioned the pics, in a reference to the Love Island catchphrase welcoming new contestants that led fans to speculate that she’s working on her sophomore project.

Who was the first celebrity you photographed?

I always tell people my godfather in this is Julián Gil. I didn’ t know much about his career because the last soap opera I saw was “Marimar.” So, I know that he did several soap operas, but I never saw any of them. But during the very high political time in Puerto Rico in 2019, I was always seeing him all the time, you know, on social media, on YouTube. Then I heard that they were having a play in Orlando and I told the promoters because at that time I was already taking the market in Orlando and I told them, look, when you see this figure, I want to be the photographer because I know they are very strong.

So, they gave me access to everything and every time they wanted to see the camera, they paused and I said, “Ah, this one does like the camera.” Then he approached me because he suddenly looked at me like, I didn’ t approach him or anything. This is a strategy that I’ ve always had. Kind of like mirroring the client. If they talk to you, you talk to them.

So, Julián approached me and said: “I want to see the photos.” And I showed him the pictures on my camera. It was a play that he did. So, after the play, he came up to me and asked me. So, I showed him, and he said, ‘ Wow, so good.’ Send it. I said, ‘ Okay, great.’ So, I sent it to him. Right away, he started following me. And he posted the pictures right away and tagged me. And after that he took me to every station in Orlando, every TV station, introduced me to everybody as his friend and photographer.

Jose “Chepe” DeVillegas

How difficult is it to gain trust in the industry?

I know there are many, many better than me. But I know I’m only one, you know? I’ m my own, there’ s nobody else like me. And I like connecting with people to the, depending, you know, on how far that can, they allow or the connection that we have together. I’ m interested in showing people what they want to show the people. And I want to protect their image. And I think when the artist realizes that, that you don’ t want to harm them, they lower their guards.

So, I try to make them feel good and I see how they flow and I, you know, I can adapt. And I respect them and I, you know, and I make sure I get respect.

Who have been your biggest inspirations?

A lot of photographers that maybe were getting the jobs that I wanted hmm and two of them that I kept coming up a lot was Alex Tamargo and his dad and his brother; they all work in the industry. So, I would see, if you know, see a great photo, it would say ‘Photo by Alex Tamargo’ all the time. And I tried to follow him. And I remember I would write him stories and say, oh, man. Okay, I’ m going to work with you. Your photos are great. He was really kind. And then the same was with Omar Cruz. Let’ s say, people in Español magazine or like Charitin will post a throwback photo that was iconic. It will always say Omar Cruz.
