In Live Nation’s Busiest Summer, Revenue Was Down But Operating Income Was Up

Concert promoter Live Nation turned its busiest summer concert season ever into an all-time financial haul. With the number of shows up 13% and fan attendance up 3%, adjusted operating income (AOI) reached a record $909.8 million, up 4% from the prior-year period, the company announced Monday (Nov. 11). 

The third quarter benefitted from a heavy schedule in Live Nation’s owned and operated amphitheaters, which can generate ancillary income from food, beverage and parking. As a result, AOI increased even though revenue of $7.7 billion was 6% short of the $8.15 billion generated in the third quarter of 2023. Net income fell 13.4% to $451.8 million.

“We wrapped up our most active summer concert season ever, our show pipeline has never been bigger, and brand sponsorships are accelerating,” said CEO Michael Rapino in a statement.

The concerts division had a record AOI of $474.1 million, up 39% year-over-year, on revenue of $6.58 billion, down 6%. Venue Nation, the venue operation division, saw a double-digit increase in on-site spending per fan at major festivals and a 9% increase in per-fan spending at amphitheaters. Live Nation hosted 112 million fans globally in the quarter, up 3%, which more than compensated for a 30% decline in stadium attendance. 

The change in venue mix — fewer high-priced stadium tickets, more lower-priced amphitheater seats — caused Ticketmaster revenue to drop 17% to $693.7 million and AOI to fall 33% to $235.7 million. Sponsorship and advertising AOI grew 10% to $275 million on revenue of $390 million, up 6%. That revenue growth came mainly from a 20% increase in the number of strategic partners that generated more than $1 million of sponsorship and advertising revenue. The division added such brands as American Apparel, Wrangler, Ultra Beauty and American Eagle in Mexico to global festivals.

“As we look toward an even bigger 2025, we have a larger lineup of stadium, arena and amphitheater shows for fans to enjoy,” said Rapino. “Momentum continues to build, as we expand the industry’s infrastructure with music-focused venues to support artists and reach untapped fan demand across the globe.” 

Ticket sales in September and October were up 20% year over year, and Live Nation has already sold more than 20 million tickets for concerts in 2025, a double-digit increase. Recent stadium ticket on-sales — including Coldplay, Rüfüs Du Sol and Shakira — saw double-digit growth in gross sales compared to past tours. 

Venue Nation expects to host about 60 million fans in 2024, up 8% from 2023; it will benefit from VIP enhancements at Northwell at Jones Beach amphitheater in New York, Estadio GNP in Mexico City and others. At Northwell at Jones Beach, for example, season seat and box suite sales are up 50%, VIP club sales are up 50%, and per-fan food and beverage spending is up double-digits. 

Following the announcement, which came after the markets closed on Monday, Live Nation shares rose 5% to $130.00 in after-hours trading.

DJ Akademiks Spills Details On Alleged Young Thug & Gunna Beef

As tensions between Young Thug and Gunna seem to have been renewed, DJ Akademiks shares details that potentially explain the situation better.

Since his release, Young Thug has made it clear to former collaborator and Atlanta rapper Gunna that the two aren’t cool, and DJ Akademiks has shed some light on what’s going on behind the scenes. The rapper shared his thoughts on Gunna in a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “Gunna stop acting like we friends on the internet. I don’t know you, my guy.” The post has since been deleted.

Akademiks took to X to share his perspective on Young Thug’s post in a thread. “I been told y’all.. Thug told Durk, Baby and a few other rappers that Gunna was no good while he was incarcerated… meaning.. it ain’t no way he can come back out and justify rockin’ wit Gunna when he told n—s not to rock wit Gunna when he was locked,” he wrote.

“Thug originally wanted to Drop on Gunna release date and was gonna have Baby and Durk as features,” DJ Akademiks continued. “Those features didn’t end up on his project but he literally sent the message to them saying ‘I Don’t Fk w that f–k n—a.. and I wanna drop on his date’ … he also didn’t drop on his date.”

Lastly, the media personality closed out with this thought: “Thug had to carve out communicating w/ Gunna in the plea deal because there is biz still to be done. He has Gunna in contracts that aren’t completed. If he was barred from having any communication with Gunna.. that would have gave Gunna a legal out in trying to get out the deal.”

Gunna hasn’t publicly made any comment on the now-deleted post by Young Thug. The explanation could make a lot of sense to those who’ve noted how Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Future, and 21 Savage have kept their distance from him. Young Thug is currently serving a lengthy probationary sentence after being released by Fulton County days ago. He’s been busy working on the community service element, speaking to Emory University students along with his lawyer, Brian Steel, recently.

Watch Jonas Brothers Cover One Direction’s ‘Night Changes’ After Liam Payne’s Death

Three weeks after Liam Payne‘s shocking death, the Jonas Brothers appeared to pay tribute by performing One Direction’s “Night Changes” at the siblings’ concert in Highland, Calif., on Sunday night (Nov. 11).

Standing in a line onstage at Yaamava’ Theater, Nick, Joe and Kevin gave the song a delicate touch — the “Jealous” singer sharing lead vocals with the DNCE frontman while strumming dual electric guitars with the eldest Jonas brother. “We’re only gettin’ older, baby/ And I’ve been thinkin’ about it lately/ Does it ever drive you crazy/ Just how fast the night changes?” the trio sing as the crowd joined in.

At the end of the tune, Nick sang part of the last line — “It’ll never change….” — before pointing to the audience to finish it for him. “… for me and you,” fans delivered before applauding.

The moment was inevitably full of unspoken emotions, as it comes as many in the music world — and certainly those who were close to Payne — continue to process the loss of the “Strip That Down” musician. On Oct. 16, the ex-boy band star fell to his death from the third-story balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires, with toxicology reports later determining that he had “alcohol, cocaine and prescription antidepressants” in his system when he died.

Police are still investigating the events that transpired leading up to the fall and detained three people in connection to the case this month. They were charged with abandonment of a person followed by death and the supply and facilitation of narcotics, according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor, but one of them — 24-year-old waiter Braian Nahuel Paiz, who claims to have partied with the star the night of his death — recently publicly denied that he’d given Payne drugs.

Payne is survived by a son, Bear, whom he shares with ex Cheryl Cole. Many of the X Factor alum’s friends and family posted messages of grief in the days following his death, including all four of his former One Direction bandmates: Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. In a separate full-band statement, the foursome wrote, “We are completely devastated … We will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.”

The list of the 2025 Grammy Awards nominees has been announced, and Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé are among those with the highest amount.

Last Friday (Nov. 8), the Recording Academy announced the list of nominees for the 67th annual Grammy Awards. Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar stood out among the nominated artists, respectively, for their groundbreaking work during the nomination period of September 2023 to August 2024. The reading of the nominees in each category was helmed by CBS Morning’s host Gayle King and comedian Jim Gaffigan, who were joined by previous Grammy winners, which include last year’s Best New Artist winner Victoria Monét, Mark Ronson, and Hayley Williams of Paramore.

The fierce beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake will be publicly displayed once again as the Compton native’s hit song “Not Like Us” directed at his Canadian rival, was nominated for Song of the Year. It was also one of his two nominations for Best Rap Performance, the other being for his verse on “Like That” from Future and Metro Boomin. Kendrick Lamar has five total nominations, and Drake has none.

Beyoncé leads all artists with 11 nominations across the 94 categories for her Cowboy Carter album, which was released this year. The album primarily has nods in the pop and country music categories, and the number of nominations beats her previous record of 10, which she received in 2009. The nominations also made Beyoncé the most-nominated artist ever in the history of the Grammys, with 99 in total dating back to her first in 2003.

André 3000 has also been nominated for this year’s Grammys for his instrumental album New Blue Sun in the Album of the Year category. Other notable rap figures attaining nominations include Common and Pete Rock for The Auditorium Vol. 1 and Doechii for Alligator Bites Never Heal. Veteran MC Rapsody was also nominated for her song, “Asteroids,” from her critically acclaimed recent release, Please Don’t Cry. The 67th Grammy Awards will air Feb. 2, 2025.

HBO Says Reports of ‘Euphoria’ Being Canceled After Two Seasons Are C A P

Euphoria fans, we have some good news for you. HBO is calling the news of the show’s cancellation C A P.

Spotted on Deadline, reports of the Zendaya-led, Sam Levinson-created teen drama meeting an early demise after two seasons are false, according to a statement from a rep for HBO.

Per Deadline:

“Euphoria is going in to production in 2025. Nothing has changed,” a rep for HBO said in a statement to The Guardian.

After Season 2 aired in early 2022, production on the next installment has been delayed by last year’s WGA & SAG-AFTRA strikes, as well as the death of star Angus Cloud in July 2023.

In July, Deadline reported that Euphoria would begin production on Season 3 in January 2025 with the principal cast returning and a time jump planned.

Well, there you have it.

Zendaya touched on the reported time jump speaking with Entertainment Weekly on The Awardist podcast last month, jokingly saying, “It’s important because there’s only so much high school drama you can deal with. ‘And then she cheats on her boyfriend again!’”

She added, “I don’t actually know much about what is happening. I don’t quite know exactly what the season is going to look like, but I do know that the time jump is happening.”

“It will be fascinating to see and understand these characters outside of the context of high school and how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids and they were in high school affects the adulthood they have and who they become in a much bigger world. I’ll be interested to see what happens too,” the Challengers actress said.

The Future of Euphoria Is Still Up In The Clouds

Sam Levinson hasn’t had much success outside of Euphoria. His show The Idol, starring The Weeknd, was not well received and was canceled after one season.

Speaking on season 3 of Euphoria, Levinson described it as “film noir,” which showcases Rue’s “exploration of what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”

Fans have been worried about the show following the tragic passing of cast member Angus Cloud. 

We shall see how the stories of our favorite dysfunctional teens continue when season 3 eventually arrives.

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: SahBabii, Mello Buckzz, Ferg, Jorja Smith & More

In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election and the official unveiling of the 2025 Grammy nominations, hip-hop and R&B have had nary a moment of stillness over the past week.

Notably, Beyoncé leads all artists with a jaw-dropping 11 nods for Billboard 200-topping Cowboy Carter LP, including a look in best melodic rap performance for “Spaghettii” (with Shaboozey and Linda Martell). Muni Long leads the R&B field with one nomination in each of its four categories, while AverySunshine and Durand Bernarr earned their first career Grammy nods (both for best progressive R&B album). On the rap side, Kendrick Lamar predictably dominated, with seven nominations for his Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers “Not Like Us” and “Like That” (with Metro Boomin and Future). It was also a watershed year for female rappers, with several of the genre’s leading ladies landing nominations, including Doechii (three, including best new artist), GloRilla (two), Rapsody (two), Cardi B (one), Latto (one) and Young Miko (one, best música urbana album).

Grammy nominations didn’t slow down the waves of new music, which included new albums from Ab-Soul (Soul Burger), Ferg (Darold), SahBabii (Saaheem), BabyTron (Tronicles), Real Boston Richey (Richey Rich) and more.

Freshest Find: Ferg feat. Coco Jones, “French Tips”

Darold, Ferg’s latest album, is the latest in a string of 2020s releases that find the brightest stars of mid-2010s/Blog Era hip-hop healing parts of themselves through tough introspection and general maturation. Between Coco Jones’ soulful, sultry vocals, a lift of Brandy’s classic “I Wanna Be Down” and ’90s-evoking production from Mario Winans and Tropkillaz. “When you wet, I start to tingle ’cause it’s too warm/ I ain’t put the condom on ’cause you got me stuck/ I’m pullin’ out, I ain’t ready to shoot the club off,” Ferg spits, simultaneously delivering a classic (slightly X-rated) hip-hop love song and a reminder of one of the remaining available methods to mitigate unwanted pregnancies. — KYLE DENIS

SahBabii, “Viking”

SahBabii was one of the leaders of the melodic rap movement in the mid-2010s, and he’s making another splash with his Saaheem comeback album. SahBabii’s rhymes are raunchier than ever as he raps over ethereal production that soundtracks his deep sea exploration. “Viking” has proven to be one of the early standouts from the project and even earned him a co-sign from Tyler, The Creator, who dubbed the intoxicating track to be “incredible.” He’s still doing things his way and “doesn’t give a f–k who like me.” Welcome back, SahBabii. — MICHAEL SAPONARA

Mac Ayres, “Blue Skies”

For his latest project, Mac Ayres went back to the beginning. With Cloudy, the Long Island-bred crooner compiled some of his most beloved SoundCloud cuts from the past eight years and sequenced them in a tender coming-of-age narrative. “Blue Skies,” the set’s ethereal, Chris Anderson-helmed closer, finds Mac pining for brighter days while balancing the warring energies of wanting to be understood without wanting to beg for acknowledgment. A deceptively heavy song, “Blue Skies” soars thanks in large part to Mac’s structuring of the song; his hushed delivery in the verses perfectly sets the stage for his impassioned belts of “Feels like forever got a hold on me/ Forever got a hold on me my friend” — a pair of lines that put many proper torch songs to shame. — K.D.

Jorja Smith, “Don’t Let Me Go”

A stripped-down instrumental with an acoustic guitar that could score a poignant scene in a movie is only amplified by Jorja Smith’s honeyed vocals. J-Money gets pensive about the pain of letting someone go, but her voice coddles emotional listeners to lay their heads collectively down on a soft cloud rather than a rock. “The wishing wells got all my coins/ But nothing seems to drift me back to you,” Smith sings. “Don’t Let Me Go” arrived as a two-pack featuring help from fellow British singer-songwriter Maverick Sabre, and it appears the tracks were several years in the making before receiving an official release in 2024. — M.S.

Hitkidd & Mello Buckzz, “Pardon Da Body”

Chicago emcee Mello Buckzz has been making waves for quite some time, and her latest collaboration is sure to add to that hype. “Pardon Da Body,” a boisterous link-up with Grammy-nominated producer Hitkidd for his Hitkidd for President album, finds Mello spitting standard braggadocious fare (the “body” in question refers to her figure, her SUV and her racks) over a piano-inflected dance-trap beat. With ample remix potential that can take this song anywhere for a ballroom-minded house set or a Jersey club compilation, “Pardon Da Body” harnesses the power of unbridled fun while keeping Mello front and center. — K.D.

Wolfacejoeyy & A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, “Dallas”

A Boogie Wt Da Hoodie dances into the sexy drill scene thanks to an invite from fellow New York captain Wolfacejoeyy, who is stamping his 2024 with “Dallas” and a major co-sign from the Bronx native. “Me and Boogie in a town bae, you know it’s going down,” Joey raps in his smooth yet soft-spoken flow. Young Jrue Holiday’s emotive rhymes have allowed him to continue to build off Valentino and have set up 2025 as his time to make a quantum leap to stardom. — M.S.

Ab-Soul, “9 Mile”

Ab-Soul wanted the introduction of his Soul Burger album to feel like the Belly, and he did justice by the Hype Williams classic. Soulo weaves through Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life” while opening up about his elusive yet militant approach. “Ain’t really confrontational but I crave chaos,” he admits. “9 Mile” then pivots to channeling his inner Eminem while calling back to B-Rabbit’s 8 Mile rap battles as Soulo gets candid about his suicide attempt. “I did jump off a bridge on Del Amo Boulevard/ I’m blessed but question why God would have mercy on a junkie,” he wonders. It’s a cinematic opener for the TDE rapper’s best project in a decade. — M.S.

All the Women Who Have Landed Grammy Nods for Producer of the Year, Including Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and 2025 Surprise Nominee Alissia

Alissia got some very good news on Friday, when she became only the ninth woman (or team of women) to receive a Grammy nomination for producer of the year, non-classical.

Alissia’s only previous Grammy nod was for production and songwriting work on the deluxe edition of Mary J. Blige’s Good Morning Gorgeous, which was nominated for album of the year two years ago. (Her full name, Alissia Benveniste, appeared on her songwriting credit for “Love Without the Heartbreak,” which she co-wrote with Blige, Anderson .Paak and Rogėt Chahayed.)

Her credits during the current eligibility year included tracks by Rae Khalil, BJ the Chicago Kid, Jamila Wood and Lion Babe.

The Recording Academy introduced the producer of the year, non-classical category at the 1975 Grammy ceremony. Thom Bell, one of the architects of the Philly Soul sound, was the inaugural winner. In all this time, no woman has ever won in the category, either on her own or as part of a collaboration.

It’s a very different story in the producer of the year, classical category. Three women have won multiple times in that category, which was introduced five years after producer of the year, non-classical. Judith Sherman has won seven times, which puts her in a tie with David Frost, Steven Epstein and Robert Woods for the most wins by anyone in the category’s history. Joanna Nickrenz has won twice (once alongside Marc Aubort). Elaine Martone has also won twice.

Alissia is competing this year with D’Mile (Dernst Emile II), who is nominated in the category for the third year in a row; Daniel Nigro, nominated in the category for the second year in a row; and fellow first-time nominees Ian Fitchuk and Mustard (Dijon Isaiah McFarlane).

Who will win when the 67th annual Grammy Awards are presented on Feb. 2 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles? Hard to say, but it won’t be Jack Antonoff, who won the last three years in a row, but wasn’t nominated this year.

Tyla showed up and showed out at the EMAs in Manchester, England, last night. Hitting the red carpet dressed in a look inspired by R&B legend Aaliyah’s early 2000s VMA fit, she then took it to the stage to perform her hits “Water” and “Push 2 Start.” She took home three EMA awards for best R&B, best African act and best Afrobeats. In the R&B category, she faced some stiff competition from the likes of R&B superstars Usher, Tinashe, SZA, Victoria Monet and Kehlani. After her big win, Tyla had this to say.

Oh my gosh, guys, I am just as shocked as you guys like I don’t know what to do like I can’t. Thank you guys so much. Thank you to my tigers. Thank you to my team. Thank you to the EMAs. I know it’s so hard to categorize my music. I literally mix so many different genres into one, but R&B is a huge influence in my music.
