Mustard Puts Boi-1da’s West Coast Shade on Blast & Posts Alleged Message From Producer Praising ‘Not Like Us’

The fallout from the Drake and Kendrick Lamar war continues. Mustard called out longtime OVO producer Boi-1da for allegedly trashing West Coast music, and the Cali native posted receipts of their alleged past conversations to his Instagram Story on Monday (Dec. 9).

“West Coast music is a–,” the Toronto producer allegedly wrote in a DM captured by Complex. “Nobody outside LA wanna hear that s–t.”

Mustard reposted the alleged messages while expressing his disappointment. “@boi1da say it ain’t so man. @boi1da tell me this ain’t real crodie. @boi1da I thought you was real one I ain’t know you felt this way.”

Even going a step further, Mustard followed up by posting an alleged message from Boi-1da complimenting Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” after the Drake diss track went No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Good s–t,” Boi-1da allegedly wrote. “Beat hard AF.”

Mustard added to his Boi-1da shade in the caption: “You said you liked ‘Not Like Us’ @boi1da. Welp there’s enough yellow tape to go around.”

While Boi-1da worked on Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers 2022 album, he’s produced countless hits for Drake over the years including “God’s Plan,” and also was involved in the Drizzy-Dot feud with production credits on the 6 God’s “Push Ups.”

As for Mustard, he’s riding high after notching a pair of top-five hits on the Hot 100 thanks to his work on Kendrick Lamar’s GNX standouts “Hey Now” and “TV Off.”

Smokey Robinson Shares a Special Memory Ahead of ‘A Motown Christmas’ Special

Motown Records icon Smokey Robinson remembers that at one of the storied label’s holiday parties in the late ‘60s, he received a very special gift.

“Stevie Wonder came,” Robinson recalls to Billboard, “and gave me a cassette tape with the music for [the No. 1 R&B/pop hit] ‘The Tears of a Clown.’ But he couldn’t think of a song to go with it and wanted me to write a song for that music. And so I did. And ‘Tears’ became one of the biggest songs I’ve ever been associated with around the world.”

Now, as NBC gets set to premiere its holiday special A Motown Christmas, Robinson is promising music fans a “great night featuring legendary Motown artists and contemporary artists singing music and having a good time together.” The two-hour special bows Wednesday (Dec. 11) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and will stream the next day on Peacock.

More than 25 Motown gems and other songs will be performed via a tuneful array of solos, duets and group medleys.

Among the highlights: London’s medley of Marvin Gaye songs (including “What’s Going On”); Knight (“Midnight Train to Georgia”); Pentatonix’s Four Tops medley (including “I Can’t Help Myself”); Foxx (“Little Drummer Boy”); Bailey and The Supremes’ medley (including “Stop in the Name of Love”); a Temptations medley (including “My Girl”); Andra Day (“Higher Ground”), Ashanti (“Santa Baby”) and Robinson performing his and the Miracles’ classics including the aforementioned “The Tears of a Clown.” Rounding out the show will be a world exclusive performance from the Broadway company of MJ the Musical.

Calling fellow host Bailey “a wonderful young woman and a great talent,” Robinson also talked about working with the executive producers of A Motown Christmas, Debbie Allen and Motown alumnus Suzanne de Passe. “Debbie and Suzanne are my sisters,” he says. “I’ve known them forever and ever, so it’s always great to work with them. Debbie is one of the best choreographers and dancers that you’d ever want to meet. And Suzanne is a Motown mainstay. At one point she was our A&R director for music and now she’s a top movie and television producer.”

Asked about Motown founder Berry Gordy’s reaction to the holiday special, Robinson notes, “I think he’s going to love it because, you know, he is the reason for the season. On the very first day at Motown, he sat us down — it was four people there other than him — and said, ‘I’m going to start my own record company, and we’re not just going to make Black music. We’re going to make beats for everybody, make music for the world; quality music.’ So we set out to do that and, thank God, I think we accomplished it. If it hadn’t been for Berry, we wouldn’t be having a Motown special.”

Billie Eilish Debuts Snippets of Two New Songs, Says She Still Worries She’ll ‘Never Create Again’

Despite two Oscars and nine Grammy Awards, sold-out shows around the world and the adoration of a generation, Billie Eilish still gets anxious about whether she’ll ever be able to write another song.

CBS Morning‘s Interviewer Anthony Mason caught up with Eilish on tour at the United Center in Chicago to talk about intense writer’s block she and brother/producer Finneas were paralyzed by last year, as well as whether she cares about winning any more Grammys; the singer is up for seven Grammys at next year’s show, including record of the year and song of the year for “Birds of a Feather” and album of the year for Hit Me Hard and Soft.

Letting out a huge laugh, Eilish said the continued accolades from the Recording Academy are “the craziest thing in the world,” leaving her “blown away and excited and honored and humbled all at the same time.”

That said, the process of recording he third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, was tortuous, with Eilish, 22, saying that at some point the siblings were “pretty stuck,” a feeling she said you never get used to. “It happens and you’re like, ‘what the hell?! I’m never going to create again,’” she said. After months of dead ends, Eilish and Finneas said that things got unstuck precisely on May 25, 2023, when they stumbled on the beginnings of the song “Wildflower.”

“And then ‘The Greatest,’ and it started to become clear that we were telling the truth,” Finneas said of the period when things began to flow again. Eilish, who said she never considered herself a singer until recently, has begun taking vocal lessons, something she’d resisted because of her insecurity about not feeling like she was a “big singer,” or having a teacher tell her she wasn’t. “When you’re a girl and you’re bad at something once, then all the boys think you’re bad at that forever,” Eilish explained about her insecurities as a female athlete growing up.

Eilish also took Mason on a tour of the traveling recording studio she sets up in her green room at every venue — which also includes a piano — explaining that she jams with friends at night after shows. She then cued up a two-second snippets of a pair of new songs she’s been working on, including one that was just her voice and a jaunty piano line and another with her signature breathy vocals over a subdued beat.

“It’s not even serious, it’s just… we’ve been making music and crocheting,” she said. Eilish will play the SAP Center in San Jose, CA on Tuesday night (Dec. 10) as part of Hit Me Hard and Soft The Tour.

Grammy Museum Announces Free Admission for Guests 17 and Under Beginning Jan. 25

The Grammy Museum announced today that on Jan. 25, it will begin offering free general admission for all visitors ages 17 and under. The new policy is expected to more than double the number of youths who visit the museum’s galleries each year.

The new free-admission policy was made possible by the Stengaard Gross Family Education Initiative through a donation made to the Campaign for Music Education, a fundraising campaign launched in 2022. The Campaign for Music Education has recently surpassed its fundraising goal of $5 million. With this initial milestone now achieved, the Grammy Museum has doubled its fundraising goal to $10 million, which it hopes to reach in 2026.

“The Grammy Museum has always been committed to increase access to music education by reaching underserved communities where access to our museum and programming could make a huge impact,” Michael Sticka, Grammy Museum president and CEO, said in a statement. “Waiving admission for kids 17 and under will go a long way towards achieving that goal.”

(Sticka, who has been leading the Museum since 2018, just renewed his contract to serve in this role until 2029.)

Additional funds raised through the Campaign for Music Education will expand the museum’s education and community programs, which have served more than 550,000 students through programs such as Grammy Camp, Grammy in the Schools and the Quinn Coleman Scholarship Fund. The Campaign for Music Education is co-chaired by such stars as Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, and Rosalía.

Additionally, as a result of the Campaign for Music Education, the Museum will unveil Sonic Playground, a new hands-on, permanent exhibit opening next month. Featuring 17 music-making interactives, Sonic Playground allows visitors to play different roles in the music industry, from rapper, singer, and producer to performer, music supervisor, and voice actor, and discover the myriad ways they could pursue a career in the music industry. Sonic Playground is made possible by a donation from Deborah DeBerry Long, dedicated to the legacy of Jim Long.

Additional donors to the Campaign for Music Education include the Ray Charles Foundation, Deborah DeBerry Long, the Living Legacy Foundation, the Natalie Cole Foundation, and BeatHeadz.

Jay-Z Lawyers Say Accuser’s Attorney Pressured Potential Client to Falsely Link Her Case to Diddy

Attorneys for Jay-Z are claiming in new court filings that Tony Buzbee – the attorney behind a bombshell lawsuit accusing the superstar of raping a 13-year-old girl alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs – pressured a different alleged sex trafficking victim to falsely tie her case to Combs.

In court papers filed Tuesday, lawyers for Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) from the law firm Quinn Emanuel tell a federal judge they were approached on Monday by an unnamed woman who had “unsolicited” info to share about Buzbee’s firm.

The woman allegedly told Quinn Emanuel that after she contacted Buzbee’s firm in October about an unrelated celebrity sex abuse case, she was “pressed for a connection to Mr. Combs.” She also allegedly felt “directed and coached by Mr. Buzbee’s firm” to include “false” claims, including that she had been drugged and physically assaulted: “She felt forced to lie.”

“When the woman made clear she was unwilling to adapt to the narrative Mr. Buzbee’s firm laid out and wanted only to speak her truth, she was dropped as a client,” writes Mari Henderson, an attorney at Quinn who says she spoke to the alleged victim, in a sworn declaration. “This woman shared this information because she felt the conduct by Mr. Buzbee’s firm — specifically, to encourage lies — discredits those who are legitimate victims.”

The new filings did not reveal the woman’s name. Though the Quinn Emanuel attorneys say the woman disclosed her name to the firm, they says she currently “wishes to remain unnamed at this time for fear of retaliation by the Buzbee firm.”

In a statement to Billboard on Tuesday, Buzbee called the new accusations “ridiculous” and said the firm was pursuing “hundreds of cases” against people other than Combs. Though he said he could not comment on the specific case without the woman’s name, he strongly denied the allegations.

“We get a lot of calls from people who believe they are aggrieved but we just can’t help,” Buzbee said. “We certainly don’t need to ‘pressure’ anyone to pursue a case. We have plenty of cases. What we won’t do is pursue a case we perceive to be weak or insupportable.”

The new filings are the latest salvo from Jay-Z’s legal team in response to a bombshell lawsuit, filed by Buzbee’s firm late on Sunday, that alleges the rapper joined Combs in drugging and assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 2000 during an after-party following the MTV Video Music Awards.

Weeks ago, Jay-Z filed a preemptive lawsuit against Buzbee, accusing him of extortion over his threats to sue over “wildly false” claims. Then on Monday, they filed a scathing response to the new rape lawsuit, denying the allegations as “patently false” and arguing they were part of a “scheme” by Buzbee to extract settlements from innocent celebrities by falsely tying them to Diddy.

Buzbee has denied all such allegations, calling them a “coordinated and desperate effort” to avoid his client’s accusations: “We will not be bullied or intimidated by these shenanigans. And our clients won’t be silenced.” Buzbee has also filed his own lawsuit in Texas against Quinn Emanuel, accusing the firm of seeking to “intimidate” him and asking for a restraining order blocking their investigation; that request was denied by a Houston judge on Friday.

Over the past year, Combs has faced a flood of abuse accusations — starting with civil lawsuits and followed by a sweepingfederal indictment in September, in which prosecutors allege he ran a sprawling criminal operation for years aimed at satisfying his need for “sexual gratification.”

Weeks after Combs was arrested, Buzbee held a press conference in which he claimed to represent 120 individuals who had been victimized by Combs and threatened a flood of litigation. He has since filed more than 20 such civil lawsuits, all on behalf of unnamed Does.

In an updated complaint on Sunday, Buzbee added Jay-Z to one of those lawsuits. Calling the rapper a “longtime friend and collaborator” of Diddy, the case alleges that the victim was driven to the party and forced to sign a non-disclosure agreement before being given a drink that made her feel “woozy” and “lightheaded.” When she went to a bedroom to lie down, the lawsuit claims, she was assaulted by the two stars while an unnamed female celebrity looked on.

In Tuesday’s new filing, Jay-Z’s attorneys they say they were contacted on Monday by a Texas woman who had submitted a claim to Buzbee’s firm after seeing his October press conference. Though her allegations involved sex trafficking by different celebrities who were “entirely unrelated” to Combs or Carter, she allegedly told Quinn Emanuel that she felt pressured to tie them to Combs.

“After detailing her experiences to an attorney at Mr. Buzbee’s firm, he pressed for a connection to Mr. Combs, asking ‘at what point did you meet Diddy,’ even though she made clear that her case was unrelated to Mr. Combs,” writes Henderson in the affidavit, relaying her phone call with the alleged victim.

In addition to claiming she was press to link her case to Combs, the new filing says the woman also claimed Buzbee’s firm pressured her to pursue the claims anonymously as a “Jane Doe,” and to bring them as a civil lawsuit seeking damages rather than by contacting law enforcement over potential criminal charges.

In technical terms, the new filings came as added support for Monday’s initial response from Jay-Z’s team. In that motion, his attorneys had asked the judge to force his accuser to litigate the lawsuit under her real name, arguing it was necessary to mount a thorough defense of her claims.

“This information, which came to Quinn Emanuel unsolicited, is further evidence in support of Mr. Carter’s right to thoroughly investigate, test, and respond to the spurious allegations that have been leveled against him,” writes Jay-Z’s lead attorney Alex Spiro in Tuesday’s filings.

Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ & ‘Please Please Please’ Earn New Multi-Platinum Certifications

Sabrina Carpenter‘s blockbuster sixth studio album Short n’ Sweet is continuing to stack up accolades, with a few of its singles earning new multi-platinum certifications Monday (Dec. 9).

As announced by the Recording Industry Association of America, the 25-year-old pop star’s smash hit “Espresso” — the lead single from Short n’ Sweet — is now 5x Platinum, meaning it’s cleared 5 million sales units in the United States since its release ahead of the LP in April. The Billboard Hot 100-topping hit “Please Please Please” and follow-up track “Taste” have also earned 3x and 2x Platinum honors, respectively.

“?Congratulations to @sabrinacarpenter on her new RIAA Gold & Platinum certifications! ?✨” the RIAA wrote on Instagram, tagging Carpenter’s label, Island Records.

The new single certifications come less than two weeks after the RIAA certified Short n’ Sweet 2x Platinum Nov. 29, three months after the Billboard 200-topping album dropped in August. Several other of its tracks also reached new RIAA heights Dec. 9, with “Bed Chem” earning a platinum badge and “Sharpest Tool,” “Coincidence,” “Good Graces” and “Juno” going Gold.

Carpenter is on a run with her year-end achievements, with “Espresso” recently coming out on top as Spotify and Apple Music’s most-streamed song of 2024. “What the hell….Thank you guys so much,” she reacted to the news on Instagram Dec. 5. “Can’t profess my gratitude enough.”

The Girl Meets World alum is currently on a break from her Short n’ Sweet Tour, which wrapped its North American leg in November. The star — whose holiday special A Nonsense Christmas dropped on Netflix Dec. 6 — will hit the road again in Europe in March.

Jay-Z Files To Have Rape Lawsuit Case Dismissed, Requests Judge To Name Accuser

Jay-Z was named in a civil lawsuit brought against Sean “Diddy” Combs and was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl while attending a music industry afterparty back in 2000. Jay-Z has since filed to have the lawsuit case dismissed, citing that the attorney representing Jane Doe in the matter is attempting a financial shakedown and is asking that the identity of Doe be revealed.

In a new report from Page Six, Jay-Z, 55, has filed documents in court that took aim at Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee and levies a claim of his own that the lawsuit was an attempt to force the rapper and entrepreneur to pay a large sum of cash to make it all go away.

“That campaign was cynical and calculated to force payment of an exorbitant sum of money—Defendant would have to pay X millions of dollars irrespective of the truth, or else,” a portion of the doc said, which was obtained by the outlet.

“When Defendant refused to pay and instead took measures to establish his innocence, this unnamed Plaintiff and her self-promoting counsel (whose name has been splashed across headlines and press conferences under auspices of representing her) went to extraordinary lengths to shut down fair defense,” the doc continues.

“These claims are not about justice for victims. Nor are they about giving victims of sexual violence a voice. Instead, they are merely the next chapter in Attorney [Tony] Buzbee’s sprawling extortion saga—a saga whose aim is base and measured in dollars,” the doc also adds.

Jay-Z’s side wants the judge in the matter to reveal the name of Jane Doe to the public, stating that the accuser’s legal team has not provided sufficient evidence to justify the anonymity.

Buzbee, Doe’s attorney, gave a statement to Page Six regarding the matter.

“Sending a basic litigation demand letter and then filing a lawsuit isn’t extortion or blackmail. That’s the legal practice.

Buzbee added that his side “won’t get bogged down in a silly sideshow that tries to make the lawyers the focus of what are very serious allegations brought by a courageous woman.”

In the court of public opinion, reactions to the lawsuit claims have grown legs, with some already announcing Jay-Z is guilty as charged before the matter has been heard. Others, such as 50 Cent, have taken to social media to take shots. Others are saying that as more details emerge, the truth will be revealed in an attempt to show grace.

In 2019, Billboard‘s staff revealed its picks for the greatest pop star of every year dating back to 1981 (the first year of MTV, essentially the birth of the modern pop era), with essays making the case for each as the biggest, brightest and most important star in their solar system that calendar year. After adding BTS as the greatest pop star for 2020, we decided to expand the project a little bit. For the last three years, we’ve counted down our picks for the 10 greatest pop stars of the year, with full essays for everyone from No. 10 (Drake last year) to No. 1 (Taylor Swift last year), as well as bonus write-ups for our picks for Rookie and Comeback of the year, and even 10 close-but-not-quite honorable mentions.

And now, it’s about time for our 2023 rankings. We’ll be counting down our top 10 over the course of next week, with our top two being revealed the following Monday (Dec. 23). But first, we’ve got our 10 honorable mentions for this year — as well as our rookie and comeback artists of the year, to be unveiled on Thursday (Dec. 12). (If you missed any of our Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century rankings that we rolled out over the last few months, be sure to catch up on those as well.)

First, though: our obligatory reminder that unlike with our Year-End Charts, these Greatest Pop Stars are not mathematically determined by stats like chart position, streams or sales numbers. Those all play a big part in our final rankings, of course — but so do things like music videos, live performances and social media presence, and more intangible factors like cultural importance, industry influence and overall omnipresence. (And we measure this over the entire 2024 calendar, so if you were only heard from at the beginning or end of the year — or only had one big song or moment — that’s gonna hurt your performance here as well.)

MGK & Megan Fox Break Up Weeks After Revealing Pregnancy: Reports

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox have broken up again, according to TMZ and Us Weekly. The news comes just over a month after the pair shared that the Jennifer’s Body actress is expecting her first baby with the musician.

Both publications reported that the pair broke up in late November.

Billboard has reached out to reps for MGK and Fox for comment.

The Transformers star announced that she was pregnant Nov. 11, sharing a photo of her baby bump as well as a picture of her positive pregnancy test on Instagram and writing, “nothing is ever really lost. welcome back ??❤️.” She also tagged MGK in the post.

Fox and the “My Ex’s Best Friend” musician previously broke up around February 2023, calling off their engagement about three years after they first started dating in 2020. They appeared to get back together at some point in 2023, and that November, Fox revealed that she had experienced a pregnancy loss during their relationship.

“I’ve never been through anything like that in my life,” she told Good Morning America at the time. “It was very difficult for both of us, and it sent us on a very wild journey together and separately … trying to navigate, ‘What does this mean?’ and ‘Why did this happen?’”
