NFL Says Relationship With Jay-Z ‘Not Changing’ Amid Rape Allegations in Civil Lawsuit

The NFL appears to be backing Jay-Z and moving forward with their relationship amid a civil lawsuit filed earlier in December claiming that the Roc Nation CEO raped a 13-year-old girl.

During a Wednesday (Dec. 11) presser ahead of the Christmas Day games on Netflix, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about the league’s association with Jay-Z and they don’t plan on changing anything in the coming months.

“We’re aware of the civil allegations and Jay-Z’s really strong response to that,” Goodell responded. “We know that litigation is happening now. From our standpoint, our relationship’s not changing with [Roc Nation], including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.”

Trending on Billboard

Jay partnered with the NFL in 2019 to have Roc Nation produce entertainment events for the league including the famed Super Bowl Halftime Show, which Kendrick Lamar is slated to headline when the big game heads to New Orleans in February 2025.

Over the weekend, Jay-Z was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000 at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty alongside Diddy. The shocking civil case was filed by an anonymous accuser and Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, whom Jay called a “deplorable human.”

The Brooklyn rap mogul didn’t waste much time defiantly denying all of the allegations against him in a statement attacking Buzbee.

“You have made a terrible error in judgement thinking that all ‘celebrities’ are the same,” Jay-Z said. “I’m not from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of the projects of Brooklyn. We don’t play these types of games. We have very strict codes and honor. We protect children, you seem to exploit people for personal gain. Only your network of conspiracy theorists … will believe the idiotic claims you have levied against me that, if not for the seriousness surrounding harm to kids, would be laughable. I look forward to showing you just how different I am.”

Jay-Z continued: “My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people. I mourn yet another loss of innocence.”

Shawn Mendes Seems to Address Sabrina Carpenter & Camila Cabello Drama & ‘Biggest Lesson’ He Learned

Shawn Mendes is the latest guest on John Mayer‘s new SiriusXM show, How’s Life, and in the upcoming Dec. 12 episode, the “In My Blood” singer has seemingly addressed unconfirmed theories about a love triangle between himself, Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter following the release of the “Espresso” singer’s sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet.

“I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang with my ex, [I] express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes told Mayer in a preview clip released on Wednesday (Dec. 11). “Maybe instead of two days it could have been two weeks.”

Trending on Billboard

He continued, “The biggest lesson I’ve heard is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”

The star’s comments are seemingly in reference to the time Carpenter and Mendes were spotted hanging out in February 2023, a year after the “In My Blood” singer split from Cabello in November 2021. Just two months later, Cabello and Mendes were spotted rekindling their romance at Coachella.

Songs on Carpenter’s album, including “Coincidence,” “Sharpest Tool” and “Taste” all seem to follow a storyline about a love interest rekindling his romance with his ex-girlfriend. The corresponding “Taste” visual stars Jenna Ortega, who fans think was casted to represent Cabello in the clip.

Cabello also seemingly added fuel to the flame, by recently sharing a TikTok singing along to her own track, “June Gloom,” which features the lyrics: “She’s cool, I heard/ Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures/ […] If she’s so amazing, why are you on this side of town? / If you like her so much, what are you here trying to find out?”

While no party involved confirmed the theories, Mendes previously spoke out in defense of Cabello in October. When a fan commented on X, “they don’t play about each other” about the duo, Mendes retweeted the comment and agreed, “no we don’t.”

A couple hours after that, he clarified why he engaged with the comment in the first place. “i guess to be honest it came from a place of being a little annoyed with all the projection over the last few months about us,” Mendes wrote, referring to Cabello. “I’m usually pretty good at just watching all the ‘noise’ go by but lately it’s been kinda bugging me ??‍♂️ feeling human i guess.”

With ‘TV Off,’ Kendrick Lamar Replaces Himself at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

Kendrick Lamar punches his ticket into a select club on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart by replacing himself at No. 1. The rapper’s “TV Off,” featuring Lefty Gunplay, advances 2-1 to lead the list dated Dec. 14 and in the process, evicts Lamar’s “Squabble Up” from the summit to No. 3. Both songs are from Lamar’s new album, GNX, which posts a second week at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

“TV Off” ascends to No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs thanks to a combination of 34.6 million official U.S. streams, 2,000 purchased digital downloads and 6.6 million in radio airplay audience in the tracking week of Nov. 29 – Dec. 5, according to Luminate. Although the song drops 26% in streams (from 46.9 million last week), it is the week’s most-streamed R&B/hip-hop title and climbs 2-1 to lead the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart. It repeats at No. 2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales (behind “Squabble Up”) and is the week’s top debut, at No. 25, on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.

Trending on Billboard

While “Squabble Up” was the main GNX focus for the surprise album’s first week, “TV Off” emerged as a fan favorite, with Lamar’s extended shout of producer Mustard’s name becoming a viral meme. In addition to its Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs coronation, “TV Off” likewise takes the top spot from “Squabble Up” on Hot Rap Songs and slides 2-3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite the drop, it’s the highest non-holiday hit on the flagship chart, as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” vault to Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

In all, “TV Off” is Lamar’s sixth No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and notably, his first to not debut at the summit. Here’s a review of his chart-topping collection:

“HUMBLE.,” two weeks at No. 1, beginning May 22, 2017
“Mona Lisa,” Lil Wayne featuring Kendrick Lamar, one, Oct. 13, 2018
“Like That,” with Future and Metro Boomin, five, April 6, 2024
“Not Like Us,” 21, May 1, 2024
“Squabble Up,” one, Dec. 7, 2024
“TV Off,” featuring Lefty Gunplay, one, Dec. 14, 2014

Featured artist Lefty Gunplay, meanwhile, lands his first No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, a week after the premiere of “TV Off” gave the West Coast rapper his first Billboard chart appearances.

With “TV Off” succeeding “Squabble Up,” Lamar becomes the 17th artist to complete a self-replacement atop Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. He enters the list just a month after Tyler, The Creator, whose Daniel Caesar-featured “St. Chroma” yielded to “Sticky,” featuring GloRilla, Sexyy Red and Lil Wayne.

Lamar nearly joined the club earlier this year, missing it only by a single week. After a five-week stint at the top, “Like That,” Lamar’s collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin, fell to Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.” The singer’s breakout hit enjoyed one week in the lead before Lamar’s “Not Like Us” stormed onto the list, the start of a record-tying 21-week domination.

‘Here We Go’: Coco Jones Scores First No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart

Coco Jones achieves her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart as “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” crowns the list dated Dec. 14. The single advances from No. 2 after a 9% surge in plays that made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored adult R&B radio stations in the week ending Dec. 5, according to Luminate.

“Here We Go (Uh Oh),” released and promoted through High Standardz/Def Jam/Republic, captures the top slot with the weekly Greatest Gainer honor, given to the song with the largest play increase among the chart’s 30 titles. With the rise, Jones topples fellow Def Jam labelmate Muni Long, whose “Ruined Me,” last week’s leader, slips to No. 2 after two weeks in charge.

Prior to “Here We Go,” Jones’ best showing on Adult R&B Airplay was the No. 2 finish for her breakthrough single, “ICU.” The track peaked in the runner-up spot for two weeks in September 2023, trailing October London’s “Back to Your Place.” In addition to the pair of hits, Jones also has placed a third track on the radio ranking: “Spend the Night,” a collaboration with BJ the Chicago Kid, reached No. 21 in January.

Trending on Billboard

The coronation also returns an R&B classic to the conversation, thanks to “Here We Go” sampling Lenny Williams’ “’Cause I Love You.” The scorching ballad, released in 1978, has been the backbone of several other hits, perhaps most known in Twista’s “Overnight Celebrity,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004.

Elsewhere, “Here We Go” rises 12-11 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks songs by combined audience totals from adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations. There, the single returns within two spots of its No. 9 peak after reaching 8.6 million in audience impressions for the week, a 2% gain. Before triumphing at the adult R&B format, “Here We Go” was a hit with mainstream audiences in recent months and climbing to No. 7 on the plays-based Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

Airplay gains, in turn, help “Here We Go” breaks into the top five (6-5) on the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs chart, which blends radio audience with streaming and sales data for its standings. With its climb, it becomes Jones’ highest-charting hit there, surpassing the No. 6 result of “ICU.”

Ramones Legal War: Arbitrator Sides With Johnny Ramone’s Widow Over Netflix Movie Project

Johnny Ramone’s widow, Linda Cummings-Ramone, has won a legal victory over Joey Ramone‘s brother, Mickey Leigh, in their never-ending feud over control of the pioneering punk band’s legacy.

In a decision made public on Tuesday (Dec. 10), an arbitrator ruled that Leigh’s manager, David Frey, must be terminated as a director on the board of Ramones Productions Inc., the corporate entity that controls the Ramones’ music and other assets.

Ruling that Frey had breached his fiduciary duty to the company, the arbitrator said Leigh’s manager had “fostered a dysfunctional and disruptive relationship” with Cummings-Ramone and had engaged “in conduct that harms the Ramone brand, rather than promoting that brand.”

Trending on Billboard

“Mr. Frey has repeatedly engaged in disruptive and negative conduct that has been detrimental to RPI and promoting the legacy of the Ramones,” wrote Shira Scheindlin, a former federal district judge, in a ruling privately issued Dec. 5. “Undoubtedly this conduct has prevented RPI from achieving greater financial success. Mr. Frey’s conduct has harmed RPI.”

One of the major missteps cited by the arbitrator was Frey’s failure to seek Cummings-Ramone’s approval for a planned movie based on Leigh’s memoir, I Slept with Joey Ramone — a film project that Netflix announced in 2021 with actor Pete Davidson attached to star in the title role.

Scheindlin said Frey was “well-aware” of his obligation to obtain Cummings-Ramone’s consent “before agreeing to this project” since the movie would almost certainly feature the band’s music — the rights to which are owned by Ramones Productions. The judge also cited an email from Netflix that described the planned movie as not just a Joey biopic, but “the story of the Ramones.”

“Based on the preponderance of the credible evidence, Mr. Frey breached his duty of care, honesty and loyalty, in failing to present the [Netflix] deal to Ms. Cummings-Ramone and/or the Board of RPI for their approval,” the judge wrote.

In a statement to Billboard on Wednesday (Dec. 11), Cummings-Ramone said she was “thrilled” that they “will now finally be able to move forward and create and expand the legacy of the best band ever.”

“Preserving this legacy is not just a responsibility but a deeply personal mission for me,” she said. “I have dedicated my life to honoring and safeguarding the extraordinary contributions my husband and his band have made to music, culture, and the lives of millions around the world.”

An attorney representing both Hyman and Frey did not immediately return a request for comment on Wednesday.

Joey Ramone (real name Jeffrey Ross Hyman) and Johnny Ramone (John William Cummings) were not actually brothers, and they had a notoriously chilly relationship during their decades as bandmates. In the years since the two died in the 2000s, that feud has seemingly continued between Leigh and Cummings-Ramone.

As the executors of Joey’s and Johnny’s respective estates, Leigh and Cummings-Ramone each own half of Ramones Productions. But that partnership has not gone smoothly, with multiple lawsuits and arbitrations over the past decade.

The latest scuffle began in January, when Cummings-Ramone sued Leigh in New York state court, including allegations that he and Frey had “covertly” developed the “unauthorized” biopic. In the lawsuit, Cummings-Ramone said that any “authoritative story of the Ramones” would require her sign-off: “To permit defendants alone to tell the authoritative story of the Ramones would be an injustice to the band and its legacy.”

As one key part of that case, Cummings-Ramone demanded the removal of Frey as a director on the board of Ramones Productions — arguing that his “continued involvement and obfuscation remains a significant hurdle toward resolving even the most straightforward of operational issues.” In May, the judge overseeing the case ordered that issue to be resolved in arbitration before Scheindlin.

In her ruling granting that request, the arbitrator cited statements from Marky Ramone (Marc Bell) that Frey had been “extremely disruptive” and from C. J. Ramone (Christopher Joseph Ward) that “I do not believe he was ever working in the best interest of the Ramones’ legacy.” Scheindlin also cited an email from the company’s former accountant telling Frey: “You have made it impossible to do what needs to be done.”

“While I agree that there are two sides to every story, the overwhelming weight of the evidence establishes that Mr. Frey has fostered a dysfunctional and disruptive relationship with Ms. Cummings-Ramone, former band members, and RPI’s vendors and partners,” Scheindlin wrote in her decision. “This conduct has harmed RPI and its shareholders.”

In one particularly colorful passage, the judge described an incident this past summer in which the New York Mets had offered to let the Queens-based band celebrate its 50th anniversary by having Cummings-Ramone throw out a ceremonial first pitch at an August game. But Frey ultimately refused to grant approval for her to take part under the simpler name “Linda Ramone” — a key point of contention in their various legal wranglings over the years.

In her decision, Scheindlin said Frey had had “no credible basis to refuse to agree to Ms. Cummings-Ramone throwing out the first pitch using the name Linda Ramone” and had cost the band a valuable chance to boost its public profile.

“This was obviously a very high-profile opportunity to celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary,” the arbitrator wrote in her ruling. “There was no reason to lose this opportunity other than to continue the animosity and dysfunction between the two shareholders and their representatives.”

The ruling, which must be confirmed by a New York judge, resolves only a single issue in the larger lawsuit and leaves other issues to be resolved in court. Leigh has also sued Cummings-Ramone in a separate lawsuit in federal court, accusing her of trademark infringement and other violations; that case also remains pending.

Paul Mescal Seemingly Confirmed to Star in Upcoming Beatles Movie

Paul Mescal is seemingly joining the Lonely Hearts Club Band!

During a conversation with Christopher Nolan after a screening of Gladiator II at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles on Tuesday (Dec. 10), the film’s director Ridley Scott discussed his next project, a thriller titled The Dog Stars. When asked if Mescal will star in the movies following his Gladiator role, Scott noted that the actor’s schedule might prevent that from happening as he will be starring in Sony Pictures’ upcoming Beatles project.

“Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sony has yet to officially confirm Mescal’s casting.

Earlier this year, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced four separate Beatles biopics — one focusing on each member of music‘s most iconic band. Sam Mendes, the Oscar-winning director whose credits include American Beauty (1999), Skyfall (2012) and 1917 (2019), will helm all four films and produce them through his Neal Street Productions.

Trending on Billboard

“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” Mendes said in a statement at the time.

The Beatles have the most No. 1 singles in Hot 100 history (20), ranging from 1964’s “I Want to Hold Your Hand” (seven weeks) to 1970’s “The Long and Winding Road/For You Blue” (two weeks). On the Billboard 200, the legendary band has earned 19 chart-toppers, including 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (15 weeks).
