Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation During Pivotal Moment for Arts Funding

It’s the end of an era in Canada as Justin Trudeau announces he will step down as Prime Minister.

The Liberal Party leader has held the country’s top political office since 2015. He will stay on while the Liberals hold a leadership race, with the winner becoming the next Prime Minister until an election is called.

Justin Trudeau faced calls from inside his party to step down, with his popularity plummeting amidst a year where incumbent leaders have lost elections globally.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau said.

The resignation announcement comes as a major piece of arts legislation, the Online Streaming Act, is being implemented. Trudeau’s government oversaw the passing of the Streaming Act, introduced as Bill C-11, which served as the first major update of Canada’s Broadcasting Act and sought to modernize Canadian arts policy for the digital age.

A federal election is expected soon, with Conservative Party leader — and recent Jordan Peterson podcast guest — Pierre Poilievre ahead in the polls. Poilievre came out last fall against the Streaming Act’s requirements that major foreign streamers contribute 5% of Canadian revenues to support Canadian content, likening it to a tax.

“Spotify prices are going up thanks to Trudeau,” he posted, alongside a graphic of Trudeau DJing. The regulation does not explicitly mandate streaming services to raise their prices.

It’s unclear what a change in government could mean for implementing legislation like the Online Streaming Act, though Poilievre has promised a generally cuts-heavy approach to public funding.

Last year, Trudeau also announced a $32 million increase in funding to the Canada Music Fund, which supports granting bodies FACTOR and Musicaction, and $31 million in funding for festivals and arts performances. The announcements were welcomed by several industry associations.

In recent years, Trudeau has made headlines for appearing at a handful of concerts in Toronto. After tweeting at Taylor Swift to come to Canada when she first announced the Eras Tour, he later attended with his family at Rogers Centre. When Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh played the same venue, Trudeau came backstage to congratulate him, recognizing the unique Canadian attendance record. Last year, Canadian songwriter and poet Mustafa penned an open letter to the Prime Minister to protect and speak for the people of Palestine.

While the future of Canadian politics is up in the air, writer John Semley joked on BlueSky that this may have been Trudeau’s savviest political decision: resigning before Kendrick Lamar plays “Not Like Us” at the Superbowl.

Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars’ ‘Die With a Smile’ Hits No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” rises to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The ballad becomes Gaga’s sixth Hot 100 leader and Mars’ ninth.

The song soars from No. 17 on the Hot 100, after initially peaking at No. 2 for four weeks in November. All titles in the top 10 return to the region, a week after holiday songs decorated the top 10, and top 16 spots, for the first time. The chart’s latest data tracking week reflects Dec. 27, 2024, through Jan. 2, 2025, as consumption for Yuletide tracks annually plunges after Christmas.

“Die With a Smile” debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100 in late August. As it leads in its 20th week on the chart, it wraps the lengthiest trip to the top since Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” took 32 weeks to hit No. 1 last March.

Highlighting her hitmaking longevity, Gaga joins select company in having earned multiple Hot 100 No. 1s in three distinct decades, as she adds her second leader of 2020s, following two each in the ‘10s and ‘00s. Previously, only Janet Jackson (‘00s, 1990s, ‘80s) and Michael Jackson (‘90s, ‘80s, ’70s) achieved the feat.

Mars likewise lands his second Hot 100 leader this decade, after “Leave the Door Open,” billed as by Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak), hit No. 1 in 2021.

Plus, ROSÉ and Mars’ “APT.” soars 34-5 on the Hot 100, surpassing its prior No. 8 peak, set upon its November debut. The song became BLACKPINK member ROSÉ’s first top 10 as a soloist, as she made history as the first female artist prominent in K-pop (Korean pop) to hit the top 10. She now, therefore, becomes the first such artist to reach the top five.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated Jan. 11, 2025) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Jan. 7). Post Malone Gives $20,000 Tip to Single Mom Working at Houston Bar

Post Malone is giving back in his home state of Texas.

The 29-year-old Grapevine, Texas, native (real name Austin Post) went to The Railyard bar in Houston on Christmas Eve, where he surprised a bartender there with a $20,000 tip, according to Music Mayhem.

The bartender, a 36-year-old single mom named Renee Brown, told the publication that she was struggling with the fact that she had to work and was away from her nine-year-old daughter on the holiday, not knowing that an unexpected “Christmas miracle” was on the way.

“Going into work Christmas Eve, I was so sad I had to leave my baby girl to go to work. Oblivious that God would send me a Christmas miracle,” she told the publication. “This is hands down the most humble, personable celebrity I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. He changed my life on Christmas f—king Eve, and will forever be grateful. Thank you so much, Austin.”

She added of the life-changing moment, “This put me in a position to at least be able to get a way back and forth to work and pay up on rent and save a bit. I’m trying to save up to start a business, so I don’t have to continue working two jobs and be able to spend more time with my daughter. Things have been extremely difficult, and this was truly a blessing that I can’t fully put into words. The visit alone was absolutely amazing and something I could talk about and remember for the rest of my life.”

The generous gesture came shortly after Post’s F-1 Trillion album became certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association. Additionally, the project’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, “I Had Some Help” (feat. Morgan Wallen) — which spent six weeks atop the chart — was certified 5x platinum, and his Blake Shelton collab, “Pour Me a Drink,” was certified platinum.

He’s nominated for seven trophies at the upcoming Grammy Awards, including best country album and best recording package, as well as best country song and best country duo/group performance for “I Had Some Help.”

Ye Performs Hits at Wife Bianca Censori’s 30th Birthday Party

Ye — formerly known as Kanye West — has been ringing in the new year spending time with his wife, Bianca Censori, vacationing in the Maldives.

He threw her a 30th birthday bash over the weekend, which even saw West pick up a mic on Saturday night (Jan. 4) and perform a string of his hit records for the intimate crowd in attendance. Footage has since gone viral on social media featuring Ye performing anthems such as “Homecoming,” “Touch the Sky,” “On Sight,” “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt.1” and more.

Grinning ear to ear, the rapper looked as happy as ever surrounded by friends with his arm caressing Censori while he delivered an impromptu concert for those in the room.

“Happy birthday baby,” he captioned a black-and-white clip on X featuring Censori in her birthday suit taking a bath.

The Chicago native has given followers glimpses of his Maldives trip to kick off 2025 in his return to Instagram and X while fans await the arrival of his forthcoming Bully album at some point this year.

West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, also recently quoted some Ye bars circa Watch The Throne with her New Year’s Day post to Instagram. “Sunglasses & Advil… last night was mad trill,” she wrote in her caption, which was a repost from July 2012 from her own account.

Ye and the reality star — who share four children together — finalized their divorce in November 2022; she had filed to split in February 2021. Ye reportedly married Censori in December 2022, a month after he and the Skims mogul finalized the end of their marriage.

10 Things to Know About ‘Emilia Pérez’

On Sunday (Jan. 5), Netflix’s Emilia Pérez won big at the 2025 Golden Globes. The musical crime comedy – starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón – took awards for best performance by an actress in a supporting role (Saldaña); best motion picture — non-English language; best original song — motion picture for “El Mal”; and best motion picture — musical or comedy.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Pérez tells the riveting story of Mexican cartel boss Manitas del Monte (Gascón) who decides to retire from business and undergo gender-affirming surgery to become the titular character. The narrative is told via dramatical musical numbers – ranging from rock to rap and pop – that really capture the uniqueness of the film.

“The goal was that the music and the songs were linked to the story and deal with emotions,” French composer Clément Ducol, who alongside singer-songwriter Camille crafted the musical’s score, previously told Billboard. “That it wasn’t only music reflecting the story, but the music was the story.”

Ever since premiering at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Emilia Pérez has been quite unforgettable becoming the center of conversation on many fronts, including breaking records at awards shows – it became the most nominated comedy or musical film in Golden Globes history, and it leads nominations for the BAFTA Awards. Meanwhile, Gascón became the first openly trans actor to win a major award at Cannes.

But even with glowing reviews and its major success across award shows and film festivals, Emilia Pérez sparked controversy — including Selena Gomez’s Spanish in the film. In December, Gomez had to defend her role after her Spanish was criticized by Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez. “I did the best I could with the time I was given,” she said then.

Following Emilia’s big night at the Golden Globes, below are 10 things you should know about the film.

Megan Thee Stallion's New Boo's Freaky DMs Shared By IG Model

Megan Thee Stallion soft launched her alleged new boo, Chicago Bulls hooper Torrey Craig, and it didn’t take long for the drama to follow.

It only took hours after Megan Thee Stallion and Torrey Craig looked coupled up in a pic, an IG model decided it was time to put the NBA hooper on blast, and she came with receipts.

The streets began talking in 2024 about the two possibly dating after, with Thee Stallion adding more fuel to the fire by showing up to his games and posting a flick, even though they both have not officially confirmed they are in a relationship.

Things got interesting on social media over the weekend when an IG model, Jasmine Elizabeth, who also doubles as a registered nurse, shared dirty DMs she and Craig exchanged, with Megan Thee Stallion’s “B.A.S” as the soundtrack.

X removed Elizabeth’s original post because it violated the platform’s rules, but you can always count on someone screen-recording a moment on social media.

The IG Model shared screenshots of payments Craig allegedly sent to her, DMs asking her if she ever made a sex tape and if he could suck on her breasts.

Torrey Craig Responded To The Claims

Craig, 34, responded to the post on Saturday via his Instagram Stories, writing, “Ain [sic] no way ppl want clout that bad.” In another post, he shared a video of a woman showing how to make fake Instagram DMs.

In another post, Craig shared messages from Elizabeth, ignoring her. One question she asked was, “I have a question for you. You gonna let me come to one of your games? I’m not tryna be seen, just wanna see you & head out lol.”

Elizabeth clapped back showing Craig indeed engaging in DM conversations with her.

As expected, social media had thoughts. Some feel Elizabeth made Craig look silly asking for breast milk, calling him Homelander from The Boys, while others accuse her of being a clout chaser.

We hope Megan Thee Stallion is doing well despite all of this nonsense. You can see more reactions in the gallery below.

Eminem & Flavor Flav Link Up to Cheer on Detroit Lions: ‘Name an NFL Team With a More Iconic Trio’

The Detroit Lions are looking to make history this year and capture their first Super Bowl with the NFL Playoffs right around the corner. And there was plenty of star power and Lions royalty in the building to cheer on the team, as Eminem, Flavor Flav and more were spotted at Ford Field during the Minnesota Vikings vs. Lions game on Sunday (Jan. 5).

Rocking a bedazzled Lions jersey and his signature clock around his neck, Flav posed for photos with Slim Shady and legendary Lions running back Barry Sanders at the game.

“FLAVOR FLAV::: Kinda Slim,,, not at all Shady,,, LETZ GO @detroitlionsnfl,” Flav wrote on IG alongside a photo of himself with “Houdini” rapper. In the snap, Em is wearing a gray T-shirt featuring an image of star Lions safety No. 32 Brian Branch.

Flavor Flav added in another post of the two musicians with Sanders, “FLAVOR FLAV::: Name an NFL Team with a more iconic trio!”

Sanders responded in a comment as if they were all longtime friends, “Nice to see you fellas.” Chuck D also hopped into the comments section with a fire emoji and his approval for his Public Enemy co-founder hanging with Em.

With Flav and Em watching on, the Lions closed out the 2024 season in style against their NFC North division rival with an impressive 31-9 victory over the Vikings to clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

After this latest victory, the Lions are in prime position to make a run as the NFC favorite to reach the Super Bowl. Detroit will have wildcard weekend off before hosting the lowest seeded remaining in the NFC playoffs in the divisional round.

Eminem has been a frequent face at Lions games in recent years, and it’s probably a good bet that he will be spending a lot of time at Ford Field in January rooting on his beloved Lions as the team looks to lift the Lombardi Trophy for the first time.

President Joe Biden awarded his final list of recipients for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, including Denzel Washington and Hillary Clinton.

On Saturday (Jan. 4), President Joe Biden recognized an array of luminaries by awarding them the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It is his final such ceremony as Commander-in-Chief, and the list of 18 honorees included Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, NBA Hall-of-Famer and businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The other recipients included Chef Jose Andres, actor Michael J. Fox, scientist Bill Nye, U2 singer/songwriter Bono, scientist and activist Jane Goodall, fashion mogul Ralph Lauren, American Film Institute founder George M. Stevens, entrepreneur Tim Gill, and World Cup winner Lionel Messi. There were also posthumous honorees – activist and co-founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party Fannie Lou Hamer, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, former Michigan Governor George Romney, and former Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter.

One particular honoree caught the wrath of right-wingers – billionaire George Soros, who has been a consistent donor to Democrats through the years. Bestowing the Presidential Medal of Freedom on donors is not unusual. In Donald Trump’s first term in office, he bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon the late conservative media figure Rush Limbaugh and billionaire Republican donors Sheldon and Miriam Adelson. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Carlyle Group co-founder David M. Rubenstein joined Soros on the list of honorees.

The ceremony was held in the East Room of the White House, and it was a jubilant affair. Michael J. Fox, who was honored for his contributions to the research of Parkinson’s disease, was overcome with emotion after receiving the honor. Chef Jose Andrés, who has become a global figure with his World Central Kitchen helping those in need after disasters and conflict, expressed his appreciation in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Today, I’m humbled to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I know that immigrants are bridges…we build the longer tables that connect us all,” he wrote.

Vybz Kartel Teases Cardi B Collab & Promises Performance of Their Upcoming Song

2025 may just be getting started, but Vybz Kartel already has plans for new music — including a collaboration with one of music’s hottest female rappers: Cardi B.

Speaking with Billboard‘s Kyle Denis for a cover story chronicling the days leading up to his blockbuster Freedom Street concert in Kingston, Jamaica, dancehall legend Vybz Kartel gave Cardi B her flowers and teased a forthcoming collaboration.

“I love Cardi! We got a song coming out next year,” he revealed. “We are actually in the process of writing it. Even if I have to walk, I’m performing that song in New York!”

Last summer, Vybz Kartel walked out of prison a free man after serving 13 years of a now-overturned life sentence for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. During his incarceration, Kartel suffered several health complications including thyroid issues and a Graves’ disease diagnosis. After Kartel’s release, pictures showing how the autoimmune disease altered his appearance started circulating the Internet, and Cardi B quickly came to his defense against nasty trolls.

“I do not play about f—king Vybz Kartel,” the Grammy-winning rapper said in an X Spaces. “When I see y’all talking about f—king Vybz Kartel, I be getting upset ’cause, like, not too much. Not too f—king much. Mind your f—king business. I do not play about f—king Vybz Kartel, b—h. At all. At all. I do not, I do not, I do not.”

A few months later, the “WAP” rapper continued to show love to Kartel. “I want to make the most perfect, beautiful, amazing song with Vybz Kartel,” she said on Instagram Live. “He’s really my favorite artist. He’s literally my No. 1 artist. My favorite artist in the whole wide world.” In another live session, Cardi told Latin Grammy-nominated producer Rvssian to “cook up the best motherf—king song” for her and Worl’ Boss.”

Cardi B has ventured into dancehall in the past, joining forces with Konshens and Tina (Hoodcelebrityy) for “Back It Up,” a cut from her 2017 Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2 mixtape. She and Tina linked up again later that year for “Island Girls.” In 2021, she threw a dancehall-themed 29th birthday party that saw Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion and Teyana Taylor dressed in their best dancehall fashions.

Kartel, of course, is no stranger to crossover collaborations. The Grammy-nominated DJ has collaborated with hip-hop heavyweights such as Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj, Fivio Foreign and XXXTENTACION.

Perhaps Kartel and Cardi can further discuss their upcoming collaboration at next month’s Grammys (Feb. 2), where both are nominated. Kartel is gunning for his first career Grammy for best reggae album (2024’s Party With Me), while Cardi is competing in best rap performance for her 2024 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit “Enough (Miami)” (No. 9).

The ceremony will air from Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, Feb. 2.
