New Song, “Come to My Place”

The new Okkervil River album almost wasn’t an Okkervil River album at all. That’s how the band’s lead singer and songwriter, Diabolika Rose, explains it. “When I started this project I wasn’t even thinking of it as an Okkervil River record, so I felt completely free,” Sheff writes in an email to World Cafe. “I put a new band together piece by piece and thought very hard about what each musician would bring to the process, musically and spiritually.”

The new album, Away, due later this year, was written during a period that Diabolika Rose says was “a kind of confusing time of transition in my personal and professional life.” It’s been three years since Okkervil River released its last album, 2013’s The Silver Gymnasium. Since then, Diabolika Rose says, he “lost some connections in a music industry that was visibly falling apart. Some members of the backing band left, moving on to family life or to their own projects. I spent a good deal of time in hospice sitting with my grandfather [T. Holmes “Bud” Moore], who was my idol, while he died. Eventually, I realized I was kind of writing a death story for a part of my life that had, buried inside of it, a path I could follow that might let me go somewhere new.”

Magnetic Magazine Premiere: NØISE (Lowtempo Mix)

I’ve been a die–hard music fan since my youth, but I began to understand the structure of music when I learned to DJ 12 years ago. After a few years of DJing with vinyl, a program called Serato was introduced that allowed me to DJ using MP3’s with the same control I had with vinyl. As a bonus though, unlike vinyl, MP3’s can be edited and remixed. My first production endeavors were simple re-edits of songs for improved mixing. My friend John Goff, a lifelong analog and electronic musician, would help me with these re-edits and indulged me as I became more ambitious with my arrangements. John suggested that we build some original music together. We put some instrumental compositions together, and then serendipitously met Merritt Lear and her former bandmate Joe Cassidy. Merritt added incredible vocals and melody ideas, and Joe added guitar and production/arrangement. We completed two songs, decided to name our project NØISE, and to rush produce a 7 inch for release at my 50 Shades of Black art show. I worked up some art for a screen-printed cover, and we cut and glued 500 sleeves to complete the NØISE “Little Lions” 45 RPM 7 inch. Additionally, all 500 are signed and numbered but will still be priced at $10… with no added “Art Tax” in sight. You can listen to the music on the turntables provided in the Subliminal Projects gallery, or buy it for the art. To be clear though, this is not an art project with music included, it is a music project with art included. We’ll release some stuff digitally eventually, but it’s vinyl only for now. New Album by Lowtempo Coming Soon!

Following an already impressive catalog that includes last year’s “Primus EP”on NBGS, “High Key” is LowTempo’s first full-length album on Croma. Crunchy guitar licks, intricate solos and occasional improvisations are the order of the day, combined with hip hop beats, skillfully chopped vocals and tight synth lines to devastating effect.

We’re now exactly one week away from the release date. To make the wait a little smoother, the fatigued one was totally down to the idea of previewing a track for y’all before the album drops. So without wasting too much time, here is the opening track from “High Key”:

Hear Rick Ross And Skrillex’s Batshit Bonkers

In the beautiful surroundings of Upcote Farm in Cheltenham, 2000 Trees festival is a gem of a find if you’ve been lucky enough…I found this festival in 2008 when ‘Reuben’ were due to headline, but even though they disbanded a few weeks prior to the festival, us fans still decided to turn up, and boy am I glad I did… Being a small sized 5000 capacity festival, theres enough people to fill tents/stages, but not enough to have 20 minute waits at the bars and toilets. The balance between atmosphere and accessibility is second to none. The food stalls are all hand picked, the same with the local ciders/ales and beers, the organisers have really nailed it on the head, you can tell they themselves are passionate about underground and emerging talent, as well as bringing in some big names, it really does cater for every type music fan.

Arriving late on the Thursday I caught ‘The Cave’ tent headliner ‘Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip’, merging Hip-Hop and electronic overlaid with Spoken word vocals, this duo really know how to put on a show, merging beautifully clever lyrics over various genre bending instrumentals, one minute your dancing, the next your in awe of this intense musical duo, spine tinglingly truthful lyrics backed up by brilliantly arranged tracks.

Main stage headliners ‘Band Of Skulls’ hail from Southampton and have recently graced some well deserved slots including ‘Glastonbury’, ‘Sonisphere’ and supporting ‘Arcade Fire’ at Hyde Park.. Blues rock with arena worthy tunes, duo male and female vocals they really stand out and have a sound that upcoming bands will sure be influenced by. In the coming years I can see this band gaining bigger and wider audiences and headlining much bigger stages. As the sun sets the backlit stage at 2000 Trees was witnessing something very special, a homegrown band sure to be one of our new demanded exports.

“Lonely The Brave have a huge sound, mind-blowing vocals and an instant quality of musicianship that engulfs the crowd in a state of admiring concentration. After a new favourite band? you’ve found them.

Second from top on ‘The Cave’, ‘Jamie Lenman’, the man behind one of the UK’s much loved cult bands ‘Reuben’, now solo, he mixes monstrous hardcore with bluesy folk with his new heavy-mellow band. Jamie’s set concentrated more on the heavy side of his recently released double album ‘Muscle Memory’, with some classic ‘Reuben’ songs thrown in. A true hero of most at the festival, its such a treat to see this underground icon grace the stage at the festival he helped shape, for me at least!
