Travis Kelce is ready to see Taylor Swift score at the MTV Video Music Awards, and so is his brother, Jason Kelce.
At the start of the Sept. 11 episode of New Heights, both siblings wished their girl luck at this year’s ceremony in light of the VMAs sponsoring part of the podcast episode posted the same day of the awards. “Hopefully Taylor can walk away with a few [awards],” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end said. “She’s nominated for about 10 of those things tonight.”

Actually, Swift is nominated for 12 prizes — more than any other artist — at the Sept. 11 award show, which kicks off 8 p.m. ET at the UBS Arena in New York. In addition to artist of the year and best pop, the 14-time Grammy winner’s “Fortnight” music video featuring Post Malone is also up for best collaboration, video and song of the year.

After shouting out Swift on the podcast, both Travis and the retired Philadelphia Eagles center went into coaching mode. “Let’s go, Tay! Come on, Tay!” Jason cheered, while his younger brother clapped his hands.

“Stay on top,” Travis added to his girlfriend. “Wishing everybody the best, though.”

“Unless you’re up against Tay, then I hope lose,” Jason quipped in response, making the tight end laugh.

The Kelces had a lot of ground to cover on the new episode, from Travis’ first Chiefs game of the 2024-25 NFL season — which his team won with Swift watching from a suite at Arrowhead Stadium — to Jason’s wardrobe snafu on his Monday Night Countdown debut. Basically, the elder brother wore a shirt that was slightly too small during his first broadcast on the ESPN show and quipped on the air, “It fits my belly now … I’ve lost a little bit of weight, but my tits are still struggling.”

“Me and Taylor were watching that, absolutely dying laughing at it,” Travis told Jason on the show.

Plus, the Grotesquerie star had to dish on his time at the U.S. Open on Sunday (Sept. 8), which he attended alongside Swift and Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. While there, Travis and the “Anti-Hero” singer packed on the PDA and passionately sang along to The Darkness’ “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” but when tennis was actually being played, No. 87 said it was hard to keep quiet.

“It’s very quiet, and you know us — when it’s very quiet, we want to say something,” he told Jason on New Heights. “The entire time I wanted to heckle the Italian Sinner, the No. 1 player in the world.”

“But I played it cool, I played it respectful,” he added, noting that he only let loose during the intermissions when music came on over the speakers. “That was about the only time I was really showing my personality.”

Watch the Kelces talk about Swift on the latest episode of New Heights above.

From Chappell Roan to Sabrina Carpenter, Megan Thee Stallion and beyond, more than a dozen major performers are ready and hot to go for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Hosted by the “Hiss” rapper, this year’s VMAs will celebrate the award show’s 40th birthday with a live ceremony at New York’s UBS Arena Wednesday […]

And then there were three. On Wednesday (Sept. 11), MTV announced the three finalists for best new artist: Chappell Roan, Gracie Abrams and Tyla.
That means the road ends here for the other three previously announced candidates for the award: Benson Boone, Shaboozey and Teddy Swims.

Abrams is the only one of these six artists who has not had a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Abrams’ highest charting hit, “Us” (featuring Taylor Swift), reached No. 36. Abrams was the opening act for numerous dates on Swift’s Eras Tour in the U.S. and Canada. She co-wrote “Us” with Swift and Aaron Dessner, and co-produced it with those two musicians and also Jack Antonoff.

Ironically, the three artists who did not advance to the final round had the highest charting Hot 100 hits of these six performers. Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is currently in its ninth week at No. 1. Swims’ “Lose Control” hit No. 1 in March, while Boone’s “Beautiful Things” reached No. 2 in March.

Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” climbed as high as No. 6 in August. Tyla’s “Water reached No. 7 in January.

Looking for clues about the upcoming Grammy race for best new artist? Of the three VMA finalists for best new artist, Roan is the only one who will be eligible in the upcoming Grammy contest. Abrams was nominated for best new artist at the Grammys in February. Tyla won a Grammy in February in another category, best African music performance, which makes her ineligible.

The 2024 VMAs will air live on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT across MTV’s global footprint, including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1 and Univision.

Voting for best new artist will continue at vote.mtv.com into the show and, for the first time by an awards show, via WhatsApp through QR code or direct link found on the website.

Hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, the 90-minute live VMAs pre-show special airs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba are executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is music talent executive.

Here are the VMA best new artist finalists.

Chappell Roan – Island

Gracie Abrams – Interscope Records

Tyla – Epic Records

The MTV VMAs are looking pretty good for 40. They have a red-hot host, Megan Thee Stallion; a highly credible show-opener, Eminem; and a cast of performers that includes two of the buzziest artists of the year, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.
The 2024 VMAs are set to air live on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 8 p.m. ET/PT from New York’s UBS Arena. Katy Perry, who won video of the year for “Firework” in 2011 and hosted the show in 2017, is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award and also perform a hit medley. (She’s the first person in VMA history to host, win video of the year and get the Vanguard – the MTV trifecta.)

Presenters include Cyndi Lauper, who won a Moon Man for best female video at the very first VMAs on Sept. 14, 1984. (The show is now more woke: The award is now referred to as a Moon Person all categories are gender-neutral.) Carson Daly is also set to present. Daly hosted MTV’s popular TRL from 1998 to 2003, back when the channel still played music videos instead of endless reruns of Ridiculousness and Catfish.

Eminem will open the show just weeks after his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), became his 11th album to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. Just this week, his 2005 hits compilation Curtain Call: The Hits became the first hip-hop album ever to log 700 weeks on the Billboard 200.

Eminem landed eight nominations this year. His smash “Houdini,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, is up for six awards, including video of the year and song of the summer. In addition, Eminem is nominated for artist of the year and VMAs most iconic performance for his 2000 performance (joined by 100+ Eminem lookalikes) of “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am.”

If Eminem wins in just one of the eight categories, he will break out of a tie with Peter Gabriel for the most wins by a male artist in the show’s history (13).

Taylor Swift leads all artists with 12 nods this year. If she wins five or more, she’ll pull ahead of Beyoncé as the artist with the most VMAs in history. Bey currently has 27, followed by Swift (23), Madonna (20) and Lady Gaga (18).

Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph are set to make their VMA debuts by performing on the Extended Play Stage. Le Sserafim will make their U.S. award show debut by performing on the VMAs pre-show.

General fan voting closed Friday (Sept. 6) on MTV’s website. Voting for best new artist remains active through the show.

With the addition of social categories, Swift still leads in terms of most nominations (12), followed by Post Malone (11), Eminem (eight), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter + SZA (seven each); Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo + Teddy Swims (four each).

Swift and Malone are not scheduled to perform, nor are such other heavily-nominated artists as Grande, SZA, Boone and Eilish.

The 2024 VMAs will air live on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT across MTV’s global footprint, including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1 and Univision.

Hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, the 90-minute live VMAs pre-show special airs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo.

It’s late Monday (Sept. 9) night at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and Bruce Gillmer, who is executive producing the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards alongside Jesse Ignjatovic, is hustling from one rehearsal to another.

“We’ve been going since Saturday,” says Gillmer of the preparations to throw what will be the 40th anniversary of MTV’s signature award show on Wednesday (Sept 11). On Monday, Gillmer and his team rehearsed with the rapper LL COOL J. “He’s a legendary MTV artist returning to the stage to celebrate a milestone of one of hip-hop’s most groundbreaking labels: Def Jam,” he reveals of the tribute to the label which also celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, before teasing: “He may even bring some friends along.”

In the past four decades, the VMAs have stayed steady as a culture-moving, irreverent event, frequently sending shockwaves around the music world. (Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift! Miley Cyrus twerks! Britney Spears and Madonna kiss!) But while music videos used to be in heavy rotation on the network, these days the only time a video may air on MTV is during the annual show. Nevertheless, the ceremony has managed to soldier on despite changing consumption habits (certain award categories have dropped the keyword “video,” and some voting takes place over Instagram Stories) and societal norms (its signature trophy the Moon Man is now the Moon Person).

Trending on Billboard

“This might be the biggest scale production we’ve ever done,” says Gillmer of 2024’s iteration, which will acknowledge the four-decade milestone. “We’re going to be revisiting some of the show’s most iconic moments that made the VMAs the pop culture beast it is today,” he explains. That includes harkening back to its debut on Sept. 14th, 1984. (Hosts: Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler; video of the year: “You Might Think” by The Cars). “One of the look backs will be at that first show from Radio City Music Hall,” says Gillmer. “It’s a homecoming of sorts, so we’ll celebrate turning 40 by flashing back to moments on stage and screen.”

The homecoming comes in the form of the production setting up shop at UBS Arena after a stint in New Jersey last year, which marks the seventh overall VMAs in the tri-state area. (For those counting, its last west coast production occurred in 2017 when Katy Perry hosted from The Forum in Inglewood, Calif.)

Straddling the border of New York City and Long Island, UBS opened in November 2021 (Harry Styles was its first musical performer). According to Gillmer, UBS was a natural choice. “It has top notch acoustics, world class tech capabilities and excellent sightlines,” he says of the arena which normally hosts NHL’s New York Islanders. “It really is built for music and allowed us to create one of our most ambitious set-ups yet.” In addition to the main stage, there will be four performance stages including what they’re dubbing a ‘fandom’ stage built into the audience. “Wait until you see how we used the Moon Person as part of our set design,” he teases. “It’s literally busting out of the screen, into the audience.” Ever the production aficionado, Gillmer can’t help but gush about the stage rigging. “I’m told we’re up to 400,000 lbs.,” he says. “The heaviest VMAs yet! I’m blown away every time I walk into the room and can’t wait for everyone to see all the ‘wow’ factors we packed into the live show.”

Much like an eclectic playlist meant to please everybody at the party, this year’s roster of performers zigzags between past and present names. In one corner, you have your MTV legends: the aforementioned LL COOL J, as well as Katy Perry who is set to take the stage to accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award (the show’s version of the lifetime achievement award). “We also just announced Eminem will be our show opener,” says Gillmer of the legendary rapper.

But it wouldn’t be the VMAs without tapping into buzzy newcomers for possible superstar-making performances. Luckily for the producers, the past year has minted a variety of fresh talent. “(Since) the show always spotlights artists with the biggest impact over the last 12 months, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter were two names we unquestionably had to have this year,” Gillmer says of snagging two of 2024’s biggest breakouts (the former had to shake up her schedule to facilitate her VMA debut). “Sabrina blew us all away with last year’s pre-show performance.”

Other first-time VMA performers this year include two artists riding breakout singles, Benson Boone (“Beautiful Things,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100) and Teddy Swims (“Lose Control,” which topped the Hot 100), as well as VMA stalwarts with new albums, including Shawn Mendes (his fifth album, Shawn, drops Oct. 18) and Camila Cabello (promoting C,XOXO which came out this summer). K-pop superstar Lisa, Brazil’s Anitta and Puerto Rico’s Rauw Alejandro will also perform.

There’s also Megan Thee Stallion, who this year serves as the ceremony’s host and continues the trend of recruiting an artist to host the ceremony (Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat have both enjoyed recent honors). According to Gillmer, the gig came after plans for a more traditional role for the star. “We actually started talking about her performance on 2024’s show first after her VMAs debut alongside Cardi B last year,” recalls Gillmer. “Our conversation evolved from there. It was easy to see she was a perfect fit: she’s quintessential MTV and is leading (her) genre. Megan is this rare artist who has an unmatched presence and dynamic personality that allows you to dominate a performance and then carry on an extraordinary event like this.”

For months, everything was booked, set and scheduled for the show to kick off Tuesday, Sept. 10. Then, a curveball: in August, the date of the first (and possibly only) Presidential Debate of the 2024 election cycle between Vice President Harris and former President Trump was announced to take place that same night. Gillmer and his team knew they wanted to steer clear.

“With our brand’s decades-long history of leading non-partisan civic engagement, it was important to encourage our fans to tune in to the debate to help make educated decisions ahead of a historic election,” he says. With that, the team went into overdrive shifting their plans by a full 24 hours, with this year’s show moving to Sept. 11. “With the date shift, it again gave us the opportunity to partner with our friends at 9/11 Day to amplify their September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance with tickets to Tuesday’s Children,” says Gillmer of the long-standing association with the charity.

Aside from streaming on Paramount+, the VMAs air on BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land and VH1, with a rebroadcast to follow. “We’re also airing a live, hosted simulcast on Univision with entertainment reporter Alejandra Espinoza who is bringing audiences in on exclusive show access and rehearsal features from some of the top Latin talent,” Gillmer says.

In any case, Gillmer is bracing for the unexpected: “Anything can happen live on Wednesday.”

Eminem is set to open the 2024 VMAs live on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 8 p.m. ET/PT from New York’s UBS Arena. The rap icon will treat fans to the first TV show performance from his 12th studio LP, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), which recently became his 11th album to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1.
Eminem last performed on the VMAs in 2022 with Snoop Dogg for a first-of-its-kind performance of “From the D 2 The LBC” inspired by the world of the Otherside metaverse. In 2012, Eminem made a surprise appearance during Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s performance of “Forgot About Dre” and “Still D.R.E.”

Eminem last opened the VMAs in 2010 with “Not Afraid,” followed by a duet performance with Rihanna of “Love the Way You Lie.” In 2000, Eminem performed a medley of “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am,” which famously included a procession of 100+ Eminem look-alikes.

Trending on Billboard

During his debut year of 1999, Eminem performed a medley of “Guilty Conscience” and “My Name Is.”

Eminem landed eight nominations this year. His smash “Houdini,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, is up for video of the year, best hip-hop, best direction, best editing, best visual effects and song of the summer. In addition, Eminem is nominated for artist of the year, and VMAs most iconic performance for his aforementioned 2000 performance.

If he wins in just one of the eight categories, Marshall will break out of a tie with Peter Gabriel for the most wins by a male artist in the show’s history (13). Four superstar women have amassed even more VMA wins. Beyoncé leads with 27, followed by Taylor Swift (23), Madonna (20) and Lady Gaga (18).

Eminem’s 13 wins are the most by a hip-hop artist. With 67 total nods, he is the second-most nominated artist in VMAs history, trailing only Madonna (71).

Megan Thee Stallion is set to host and perform on the VMAs. Katy Perry will receive the Video Vanguard Award and perform a hit medley. Other performers include Anitta (feat. Fat Joe, DJ Khaled + Tiago PZK), Benson Boone, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Halsey, KAROL G, Lenny Kravitz, LISA, LL COOL J, Rauw Alejandro, Sabrina Carpenter and Shawn Mendes.

Cyndi Lauper, who won and appeared on the very first VMAs in September 1984, is set to present, along with former MTV host Carson Daly. Other presenters set for this year’s show are Addison Rae, Alessandra Ambrosio, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Big Sean, Busta Rhymes, Damiano David (Måneskin), DANNA, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Flavor Flav, French Montana, Halle Bailey, Jordan Chiles, Lil Nas X, Miranda Lambert, Naomi Scott, Paris Hilton, Suki Waterhouse, Thalía and Tinashe.

Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph are set to make their VMA debuts by performing on the Extended Play Stage.

The 2024 VMAs will air live on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT across MTV’s global footprint, including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1 and Univision.

Le Sserafim will make their U.S. award show debut by performing on the VMAs pre-show.  Hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, the 90-minute live VMAs pre-show special airs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo.

With the addition of social categories, Taylor Swift still leads in terms of most nominations (12), followed by Post Malone (11), Eminem (eight), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter + SZA (seven each); Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo + Teddy Swims (four each).

General fan voting closed Friday (Sept. 6) on MTV’s website. Voting for best new artist remains active through the show.

Cyndi Lauper, who won best female video at the very first MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 14, 1984, is among the presenters at this year’s show, which is set for Sept. 11.
Lauper took best female video at that first show for her zesty “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and brought comic relief by explaining the VMA eligibility and voting rules in gibberish, which has been described as similar to “ancient Babylonian.”

Lauper was also the leading nominee at that first show with nine nods, but Herbie Hancock was the night’s big winner, with five wins.

Trending on Billboard

Carson Daly, who also has deep MTV roots, is also set to present. Daly hosted MTV’s popular TRL from 1998 to 2003. TRL was based on two previous shows, Total Request and MTV Live, both of which had also been hosted by Daly.

Both are MTV Push artists and multiple nominees. Swims has four nods, including best new artist and best alternative. Murph has two, including best collaboration feat. Jelly Roll. Swims will perform “Lose Control,” a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and “The Door.”

Le Sserafim will make their U.S. award show debut by performing on the VMAs pre-show. The K-pop girl group recently landed their first Hot 100 hit (“Easy”) and performed at Coachella. Le Sserafim have had two top 10 albums or EPs on the Billboard 200 (Unforgiven and Easy).

Hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, the 90-minute live VMAs pre-show special airs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo.

What would you say is the most iconic performance in the history of the VMAs? Was it Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” from the very first show in 1984, where she wore a combination bustier/wedding gown and rolled around on the floor?
Or Madonna’s performance of that same song and her then-current release “Hollywood” with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and a guest rap by Missy Elliott from the 2003 show? The performance caused a stir (nothing new for Madonna) thanks to its gender role-reversal and same-sex smooch.

Or would you go with Beyoncé’s “Love on Top” from 2011 in which she patted her baby bump to celebrate her pregnancy? Or Katy Perry’s performance of “Roar” live from Empire-Fulton Ferry Park in Brooklyn, which closed the 2013 show? The VMAs’ list of seven contenders included two performances from the 2009 show – Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” (in which she appeared to bleed out onstage; it was just an effect) and Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me.”

Trending on Billboard

The final contender – the only one by a man – is Eminem’s performance of “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am” from the 2000 show. Eminem began the performance outside Radio City Music Hall and continued as he strode into the theater followed by a hundred Eminem lookalikes.

The 2024 VMAs also announced nominees in three other social categories: Song of Summer, Best Group and Best Trending Video. All voting will be hosted on @MTV Instagram Story.

MTV also announced a “bonus week” of voting across general categories, now closing Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. ET. Fans vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories, including video of the year, by visiting MTV’s website. Voting for best new artist will remain active into show.

With nominations in these four social categories added in, Taylor Swift maintains her lead as the year’s top nominee (12), followed closely by Post Malone (11), Eminem (eight), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter and SZA (seven each); Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims (four each).

MTV and TelevisaUnivision will partner for the second consecutive year with a live, hosted simulcast of the 2024 VMAs on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Univision, the most-watched network among U.S. Hispanics. An encore presentation of the awards show will air on UniMás at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT.
This is a reversal of what transpired last year, when the live simulcast aired on UniMás at 8 p.m. ET and the encore presentation aired on Univision at 11:30 p.m. ET. This platform flip portends a much bigger live audience this year, given Univision’s greater reach.

Univision will bring exclusive show access to its audience, with original, in-show commentary from entertainment host and reporter Alejandra Espinoza throughout the three-hour broadcast, live from New York’s UBS Arena.

“We’re excited to build on last year’s unique and enormously successful partnership with TelevisaUnivision,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming & events, Paramount and chief content officer, Music, Paramount+, said in a statement. “Together, we were able to reach the largest live Spanish-speaking audience in VMAs history and deliver +29% [year-over-year] ratings growth. We look forward to celebrating the world’s top artists, including some of the biggest Latin superstars, with our fans around the globe.”

“TelevisaUnivision is excited to partner with Paramount for the second consecutive year to bring the VMAs to our audience,” said Ignacio Meyer, president of U.S. Networks at TelevisaUnivision. “Latin music’s rising influence on mainstream culture is undeniable. We’re proud to be the exclusive Spanish-language home in the U.S. for this year’s award show, offering viewers an in-language, front-row seat to this celebration.”

MTV calls this year’s show the “most global VMAs in show history.” The show will have three Latin performers — Anitta, Karol G and Rauw Alejandro, plus Camila Cabello, who has Latin roots. (The show has also booked K-Pop star LISA.)

Latin and Latin pop crossover music has been an important part of the performance mix on VMA broadcasts since 2018. Last year, four Latin artists performed on the show – Shakira (as part of her Video Vanguard award presentation), Karol G, Peso Pluma and Anitta (the latter both solo and in tandem with K-pop stars TOMORROW X TOGETHER).

Prior to that, in 2022, J Balvin (with Ryan Castro), Anitta and Bad Bunny performed. In 2021, Ozuna, Cabello and Tainy (in tandem with Shawn Mendes) represented Latin music. In 2020, Maluma, CNCO and Nicky Jam (in tandem with Black Eyed Peas and Tyga) did the honors. In 2019, CNCO (in the pre-show), Cabello (with Mendes), Rosalía and Ozuna (in a joint performance) and J Balvin and Bad Bunny (also in a joint performance) all performed. In 2018, Jennifer Lopez (receiving a Video Vanguard award) and Maluma performed.

Anitta is this year’s top Latin nominee, with three nods – best Latin and best editing for “Mil Veces” and another nod for best Latin for “BELLAKEO.” Bad Bunny and Alejandro each have two nods. Bad Bunny is nominated for artist of the year and best Latin for “MONACO” Alejandro is nominated for best Latin and best cinematography for “Touching the Sky.” Karol G, Shakira, Cardi B and Myke Towers each have one nod.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers of the 2024 VMAs. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba are executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is music talent executive.

Latin music will be heavily represented on the show, with three performers from the genre (Anitta, Karol G and Alejandro) and a fourth (Cabello) with Latin roots.

Cabello and Mendes performed “Señorita” on the VMAs in 2019 when they were pop’s most photogenic couple, dating until 2021 and briefly reuniting in 2023. This year, they are set to perform separately.

Ahead of the release of his fifth studio album, Shawn, on Oct. 18, Mendes will make a return to the MTV stage for the first televised performance from the album. Mendes has a streak to protect: His first four studio albums all reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Mendes performed on the VMAs three years running: “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” (2017), “In My Blood” (2018) and “If I Can’t Have You” and “Señorita” (2019). Most recently, he performed “Summer of Love,” his collab with Tainy, in 2021. Mendes is a two-time VMA winner.

Anitta is set to bring her signature Brazilian funk to the MTV stage for a third consecutive year with a medley of “Savage Funk” and “Alegria” plus the world premiere of “Paradise” with guest appearances by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Tiago PZK. Last year, she graced the stage twice: first with a medley of her Funk Generation hits “Used to Be,” “Funk Rave” and “Grip,” followed by a genre-bending K-pop/Latin crossover performance with TOMORROW X TOGETHER on “Back for More.” In 2022, she performed a medley that included “Envolver,” “Bola Rebola” and “Vai Malandra.” The first Brazilian artist to win at the VMAs in 2022 – best Latin for “Envolver” – Anitta is vying for her third consecutive best Latin win this year.

Karol G is also set to make a return to the MTV stage. Last year, the Colombian star won her first Moon Person – best collaboration alongside Shakira – and made her VMAs debut with a sultry rendition of “Oki Doki” / “Tá Ok.” This year, she’s poised to take home her second Moon Person and her first win in the best Latin category. Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito World Tour became the highest-grossing Latin tour by a woman in Billboard Boxscore history. Her album Mañana Será Bonito made her the first woman, and only the second artist ever, to top the Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish-language album. Her many awards include a Grammy, five Latin Grammys and the title of 2024 Billboard Woman of the Year.

LL Cool J will return to the MTV stage to perform new music from his upcoming album The FORCE, due Sept. 6. Last year, LL was part of the show-closing all-star 50th-anniversary salute to hip-hop – during which he performed his hits “I’m Bad” and “Mama Said Knock You Out.” It was his first VMAs performance in more than 25 years. LL, the 1997 Video Vanguard recipient, performed “Mama Said Knock You Out” on the 1991 show. He also took home his first Moon Person – best rap – for that same hit.

This year will mark the first time the show has been held on 9/11 since the terrorist attack in 2001 made that date infamous. In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will again support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of 9/11.

The 2024 show will be held just three days shy of the 40th anniversary of the inaugural VMAs at Radio City Music Hall, where Madonna stole the show.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, with 10 nods. Her “Fortnight” collaborator Post Malone is second, with nine nods – eight in tandem with Swift plus one for his hit “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen. They are followed by Ariana Grande, Eminem and Carpenter (six nods each); Megan Thee Stallion and SZA (five each), and LISA, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims (four each).

Other artists with multiple nominations are Anitta, Benson Boone, Bleachers, GloRilla, Dua Lipa and Tyla, with three each; and Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Roan, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Drake, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, Jung Kook, Latto, Alejandro, Sexyy Red, Tate McRae, Usher and Victoria Monét, with two each.

Fans can vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, Aug. 30. Voting for best new artist will remain active into the show on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Nominations in social categories will be announced at a later date.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers for the 2024 VMAs. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer.
