Victoria's Secret

Tyla is set to perform on the runway of this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which was announced Wednesday (Sept. 18). Rolling Stone originally reported that Victoria’s Secret said it chose the Grammy-winning South African artist for her “vibrant personality” and “innovative take on pop and R&B,” hailing her as an “integral” part of the […]

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is making a comeback, and it’s bringing one of music’s biggest living legends along for the ride. As announced Tuesday (Sept. 17), Cher will headline the brand’s first big runway showcase in six years — and she’ll be leading a lineup of all-women artists for the first time ever.
The iconic fashion house shared the news on Instagram with a video of the 78-year-old superstar singing her 1998 Billboard Hot 100-topping hit “Believe,” giving fans a taste of what she’ll bring to the VS runway this fall. “It’s a woman’s world, so it’s understood that you can’t have a fashion show without the mother of fashion herself—@Cher!” the caption reads.

“But she won’t be alone…stay tuned, more announcements are coming to round out our first-ever, all-women lineup,” the message continues.

Scheduled for Oct. 15 in Brooklyn, New York, the 2024 fashion show marks a major comeback for Victoria’s Secret. The event used to be an annual prime-time TV spectacular featuring the world’s most recognizable models — Heidi Klum, Karlie Kloss and Gisele Bündchen, to name a few of the show’s “Angels” — walking the runway in lingerie and avant-garde angel wings.

Major musicians were also frequently tapped to provide a live soundtrack for the fashion show, performing on stage as the models walked. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and more have all taken the gig at different points.

The last show of this kind, however, was in 2018, after which Victoria’s Secret canceled the program amid growing backlash to the brand’s lack of inclusivity and perpetuation of unrealistic beauty standards. In 2019, parent company L Brands stated its desire to “evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret” in the show’s absence.

Four years later, it made a mini-return of sorts with VS testing out a new approach: The Tour, a Prime Video special compiling footage of A-listers Adriana Lima, Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Bieber modeling the company’s apparel in cities all over the world. It also featured a performance from Doja Cat, then fresh off the release of her album Scarlet.

This year, Hadid will once again walk for VS alongside another seasoned Angel, Tyra Banks. And yes, the wings will also be making a grand return.

“We’ve read the comments and heard you,” the company wrote on Instagram in May. “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is ✨ BACK ✨ and will reflect who we are today, plus everything you know and love—the glamour, runway, wings, musical entertainment, and more!”

Is it a crime to want a little bit of “Attention?” After sharing photos of herself in neck brace in a pair of Instagram posts on Wednesday (Sep. 6), Doja Cat has revealed that her neck is perfectly fine.
“So, my friend here, my date, my lovely date got whiplash and he takes it off sometimes and I stole it from him. I’m literally fine. Completely fine, my neck is great,” Doja explained to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet for The Victoria’s Secret World Tour Wednesday night. In a way, the “Say So” rapper was honest from the start — she originally shared those pictures with the caption “I’m fine my neck is fine.”

On Aug. 3, Victoria’s Secret announced that Doja Cat will be headlining The Victoria’s Secret World Tour, which marks the company’s return to TV since its last televised runway show in 2018. The part fashion show, part documentary is set to air on Prime Video on Sept. 26. The Tour ’23 is just one major performance on the horizon for the “Kiss Me More” singer.

On Sept. 12, Doja Cat will take the stage at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper boasts six nominations at this year’s ceremony, including artist of the year, video of the year (“Attention”) and song of the summer (“Paint the Town Red”). In 2021, she served as the show’s host and won two Moonpeople.

These two high-profile performances are in support of Scarlet, Doja’s forthcoming fourth studio album. The follow-up to 2021’s Grammy-winning Planet Her, Scarlet boasts a trio of pre-release singles. In addition to “Attention,” which peaked at No. 31 on the Hot 100, Doja also released “Paint the Town Red,” the album’s current radio single, which reached a new peak of No. 3 on the Hot 100 this week (chart dated Sep. 9), and a promotional single titled “Demons,” which features a music video starring Emmy-nominated Yellowjackets actress Christina Ricci.

Doja’s trolling antics come amid an album campaign that has largely been characterized by her testy relationship with fame, media, fans and controversy. In May of this year, she said her two recent albums — Planet Her and 2019’s Hot Pink — were “cash grabs” featuring “mediocre pop,” before taunting, “yall fell for it.” There was also an erratic since-deleted Threads spree lambasting her fanbase, which cost her nearly 300,000 followers. “My fans don’t get to name themselves s–t,” she allegedly said. “If you call yourself a ‘Kitten’ or f–king ‘Kittenz’ that means you need to get off your phone and get a job and help your parents with the house.”

By Aug. 31, Doja revealed an updated album cover for Scarlet after changing the artwork once fans noticed that German hardcore band Chaver also used the same spider on the artwork for their upcoming album cover.

Scarlet is currently slated for a Sep. 22 release.

“We’re going to continue to lean into the marketing spend to invest in a business both at top of funnel and also to support the new version of our fashion show,” VS’ chief financial officer Tim Johnson said during the company’s fourth quarter earnings call on Friday (March 3), according to USA Today.

In a follow-up statement, Victoria’s Secret added, “We are always innovating and ideating in all spheres of the business to continue to put our customer at the center of all we do and reinforce our commitment to championing women’s voices and their unique perspectives.”

The statement continued, “As we’ve previously shared, our new brand projection and mission will continue to be our guiding principle. This will lead us into new spaces like reclaiming one of our best marketing and entertainment properties to date and turning it on its head to reflect who we are today.”

Throughout the years, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured performances from A-list stars while the models showed off various lingerie designs. The Weeknd, Halsey, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Miguel, Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Bruno Mars and Shawn Mendes are among the many artists to take the stage at the fashion show.

However, Victoria’s Secret has faced controversy due to its lack of model inclusivity as well as its male gaze-focused advertising that often perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards. L Brands, VS’ parent company, canceled the fashion show in 2019, citing a move to “evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret.”

In 2018, the brand’s then-chief marketing officer Ed Razek faced backlash following comments during a Vogue interview in which he suggested that the fashion show did not cast trans women because “the show is a fantasy.”

In 2022, a three-part Hulu documentary titled Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons delved into the company’s rise and fall as well as shed light on ties between former CEO Leslie Wexner and Jeffrey Epstein.
