Hip-Hop has lost yet another MC this month. Broadway of Strickly Roots and of Boogie Down Productions fame has passed away.

As spotted on HipHopDX, one half of the Bronx duo is no longer with us. On Saturday, September 7 DJ Premier broke the bad news  via his Instagram Story when he shared a video that featured the MC. Media personality Desus also acknowledged the performer on X, formerly known as Twitter. “rip broadway from strickly roots. bx mc, valley legend” he wrote.

Born Dion Barnes, Strickly Roots gained a buzz with their single “Beg No Friends” featuring Grand Puba and Fat Joe. The song would be played on local radio and the very influential Video Music Box show. Later in 1996, Broadway would go solo and release his single “Must Stay Paid” which was produced by KRS-ONE. Broadway was the son of Reggae singer Sugar Minott. At this time Broadway’s cause of death is unknown.

DJ Akademiks got upset at the news of Kendrick Lamar performing at the 2025 Super Bowl, accusing Jay-Z of getting involved in the beef with Drake.

On Sunday (September 8), Kendrick Lamar announced that he would be the headline halftime performer at Super Bowl LIX. The news sent everyone into a frenzy and made DJ Akademiks highly upset. He then leveled accusations at Jay-Z for deliberately picking Lamar to stoke the beef between him and Drake further.  The social media announcement came before kickoff began on the first full day of the NFL’s 2024-2025 season, with Lamar saying: “You know you only get one chance to win the championship, right? Ain’t no round twos.” Many saw it as a reference to Drake’s subliminal message in a recent post where he claimed, “He will win game two.”

DJ Akademiks wasn’t thrilled and began to issue a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter expressing his anger. “The NFL just gave Kendrick Lamar a global “Pop Out” show… Jay Z I see u n–guh… u ain’t low…”, he wrote, referencing the torrid beef between the Compton rapper and Drake that dominated the spring and summer culminating in several tracks including “Not Like Us”. He followed that up with another post directed at the Roc Nation founder: “Jay-Z and Roc Nation responsible for curating the Super Bowl halftime show… remember that.”

The podcast host continued to vent, writing in another post: “Drake and J.Cole rapped ‘Big As the What.. Big As the Super Bowl’ And Jay-Z just made Kendrick Lamar the headliner of the Super Bowl. Nah n—-a dis s—t is wild … this s—t crazy.”

DJ Akademiks also called Jay Z a “legendary hater” for the Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers rapper being chosen to headline over New Orleans native Lil Wayne. The controversial media personality also referenced the former beef between Jay Z and Drake in an Instagram post. “Jay-Z set up the play. Drake … Jay ain’t forget bout that “Charged Up” verse n—-a. He the higher-ups,” he wrote with a tears streaming emoji.
Super Bowl 59 will take place on February 9, 2025, with Roc Nation and Jesse Collins co-producing the show sponsored by Apple Music. “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one,” Lamar said in the press release.

On Sunday (September 8), social media was buzzing when it was revealed that Kendrick Lamar had been tapped to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans as many assumed the honor would go to Nawlin’s favorite son, Lil Wayne.

But with Jay-Z running the show and tapping Kung Fu Kenny to kick things off come February 9th, Lil Wayne’s mixing engineer Fabian Marasciullo took to social media to express his disappointment in the surprising choice. According to HipHopDX, Marasciullo took to his Instagram stories and bluntly stated that he felt “Confused. Disappointed. Angry. But most of all. Inspired.”

Continuing to build on his feelings, Weezy’s engineer added “Will never again be in the position or have the [GOAT] where we are at the mercy of someone else’s decision. We will make the decisions.”

After Kendrick Lamar was revealed to be the headliner for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, many fans felt he’d undoubtedly bring Wayne along with him to perform on stage, but with the way Marasciullo is describing the mood on that side, would Wayne even accept an invitation to the show if he’s not headlining it?
Per HipHopDX:
During an interview with Taylor Rooks for Bleacher Report last December, Weezy talked about his desire to perform at Super Bowl LIX, which is being held at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025.
“Just as bad as I wanted to see my name at the top of that list when I was whatever age it was and I would bust into the office and get that Billboard magazine,” he said about wanting to perform.
“Just as an artist, you know, ’cause this has nothing to do with the sport. As an artist, this is an achievement. This has nothing to do with the sport — that’s so crazy. I don’t care what teams are playing, what city it’s in. ‘You performed for the what?!’ Like, what? Oh man, so that right there is an achievement.”
We’re not gonna lie, we lowkey feel bad that Jay passed on Wayne in favor of Kendrick Lamar. Yes, we know K. Dot had a monster year thanks to his back-and-forth with Drake, but Weezy is a Hip-Hop legend from New Orleans with an illustrious catalog. Seemed like a no brainer to us.

Even New Orleans triple OG, Master P took to social media to say Wayne should be added to the Halftime show writing “He’s one of the greatest Hop Hop artists alive, still relevant and he’s a New Orleans native. Let’s not miss this cultural moment in the South.”

What do y’all think? Should Lil Wayne have been the first choice to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show? Should he accept an invite to perform alongside Kendrick Lamar? Let us know in the comments section below.

There is no shade like fashion shade. Anna Wintour and Naomi Campbell threw some jabs at each other during a recent awards show.

As spotted on TMZ the Editor-In-Chief of Vogue Magazine was feeling petty this week. The media executive was asked to present the super model with the Icon Award at the Harlem’s Fashion Row Fashion Show And  Awards. While on stage she seemed clearly annoyed that Naomi had yet to arrive to the event and proceeded to take a jab at her. “I am a very punctual person, and I have the honor of presenting tonight to someone who is often late,” Wintour said to which the crowd in attendance laughed. She proceeded to let Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Samira Nasr that she would have to present Naomi the honor as Wintour exited the ceremony immediately after. She would be later spotted at the US Open.

Upon arriving it seems Naomi was notified that the Wintour had left the venue prompting her to address the situation in a very classy but charming way. “I want to say this. Everything is meant to work out the way it’s going to work out,” she told the crowd. “It wasn’t my choice to have the other lady. I would much rather have this,” Campbell said, nodding to Nasr. While the shade was indeed returned, Naomi did have some kind works for Wintour.
“So thank you, Anna Wintour, for your support in my career from 1987, meeting a young Black girl from South London in British Vogue offices and taking a chance in giving me a shoot,” she added. “And so I thank you for your influence and your continuing support in pushing fashion forward also.”
Sources close to the event say that Naomi Campbell was not tardy and arrived at the time she was asked to. TMZ hears that Anna Wintour was the one who asked the committee to move up the presentation so she make the tennis match. You can see footage from the event below.

Over the years StockX’s reputation has taken a massive hit as not only have they been caught selling fake sneakers by both customers and Nike, but they don’t even guarantee authenticity anymore as bootleg sneakers are allegedly becoming more and more indistinguishable from their authentic counterparts.

Needless to say they’ve since been struggling to maintain their business earnings in recent years resulting in the company slashing their workforce, but now it seems like they may get a little boost as they’ve partnered with Walmart to sell their stock as the resale market has cooled as of late.

According to Bloomberg, Walmart Inc. is looking to get in on the sneaker resale market (a tad bit late if you ask us) and are joining forces with the embattled sneaker reselling company to help them get their foot in the door.
Starting next week Walmart’s website will carry hundreds of sneakers that hypebeasts crave before eventually expanding to possibly tens of thousands of items in the coming future.
Vice president and category lead at Walmart Marketplace, Michael Mosser feels like this is in Walmart’s best interest to not only reach a new group of consumers, but also give their existing customers a new category to shop from going forward.
Bloomberg reports:
Shoppers “are looking for this full spectrum of products from Walmart,” whether that’s staples or collectible items, Mosser said, adding that Walmart is experiencing healthy demand for coveted sneakers.
The partnership — the first between Walmart and StockX — is part of the retailer’s efforts to beef up its online business to grab more spending from Amazon.com Inc. and other retail giants. Walmart said last week that it will expand the assortment on its marketplace of third-party vendors to include pre-owned and collectible products, building on its offering of refurbished electronics.
For StockX, it marks its first third-party platform deal, Chief Executive Officer Scott Cutler said in an interview. The Walmart deal will help StockX reach a new consumer base, including customers who may be unfamiliar with the brand, he said.
Customers who are unfamiliar with the brand and their reputation no less (no shots).
While this move will undoubtedly help both Walmart and StockX move merchandise, we have to wonder if anything will change on StockX’s part. Will the move effect the prices of the sneakers they’re reselling? Will they once again guarantee authenticity now that Walmart is involved? These are just a few questions sneaker have now that StockX has gotten new life in 2024.

Natasha Rothwell has signed on to star and produce the viral TikTok series “Who TF Did I Marry?” to television, adapting the story originally shared by Tareasa “Reesa Teesa” Johnson earlier this year.

According to an exclusive report by Variety, Rothwell will take on the lead role, portraying Johnson, while also serving as executive producer. After a competitive bidding war, ABC Signature secured the project, adding it to the slate under Rothwell’s Big Hattie Productions, who was previously in an overall deal with the studio.

The original TikTok series, comprised of 50 videos totaling over eight hours, details Johnson’s tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband, whom she accuses of being a pathological liar. Amassing over 450 million impressions and over 3 million followers in just two weeks, the series captivated social media. Johnson shared shocking stories about her ex, who allegedly claimed to have played football at San Diego State University (despite never attending), asked for funeral money for a stepdaughter who was still alive and had a mismatched social insurance number on their marriage license. Johnson also revealed that he had been unfaithful. While she referred to him as “Legion” in the videos, TikTok users later identified him as Jerome McCoy, who has since publicly denied her allegations.
Rothwell’s production company, Big Hattie Productions, is leading the project, with Mary Sayama McHenry joining as the Director of Development. McHenry previously worked at CBS TV Studios and most recently at Get Lifted Film Company.
This announcement comes ahead of the September 13 premiere of Rothwell’s Hulu comedy, *How to Die Alone*, which she created and stars in. Additionally, Rothwell will reprise her Emmy-nominated role in Season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus. She is widely recognized for her work on Insecure, where she played Kelli, along with her stint as a writer for Saturday Night Live from 2014 to 2015.
Johnson, who holds a degree in criminal justice from Kennesaw State University and has studied international law and counterterrorism in The Hague, signed with CAA in March following her viral success.

It’s been a few days since Big Sean released his latest studio album, Better Me Than You, and while his day-one’s are still absorbing all the work that Sean’s been cooking for the past few years, the Detroit representative is keeping his buzz going with a new video for one of the album’s standout cuts.

Starring Taye Diggs as “The Boss Man,” the visuals to “Who You Are (Superstar)” features a throwback theme to the 90’s era which finds Big Sean in the corporate world when TV’s and computers had the big backs, cell phones were the size of bricks and candlelit dinners were considered top tier romantic. Oh, how we long for those days.

Back in 2024 some breakout rap stars from the late 90’s continue to keep their grind going and in the clip to “Gangsta,” B.G. and Birdman rekindle the bromance they shared during the Hot Boyz days and stunt with a few thick women who make it bounce for them whenever they’re not politicking in a big boy Maybach that cost more than most people’s houses.
Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from The Real Ace and Juelz Santana, Meet The Whoops and Hit-Boy, and more.
BIG SEAN – “WHO YOU ARE (SUPERSTAR)”

B.G. FT. BIRDMAN – “GANGSTA”

THE REAL ACE & JUELZ SANTANA – “10 SUMMERS”

MEET THE WHOOPS & HIT-BOY – “STAND FOR THAT”

EL TRAINN – “LIFE OF LOCOMOTIVE”

LIL TECCA – “BAD TIME”

RICH THE KID – “HOLD ON”

50 Cent has been one of the biggest names in the rap game for the past 20 years and during that time he’s interacted (and beefed) with everyone you can possibly think of. Recently he opened up about a quick comment from Dame Dash that seems to have left a sour taste in his mouth and in true Fiddy form, he comes off a tad bit petty when reflecting on the moment.

In a recent clip making the rounds on social media, 50 Cent sits down with Gillie Da Kid and Wallo for their Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast and recalled a moment in time following his groundbreaking record deal with Shady Records in 2002 in which he was paid a cool million dollars to sign with Eminem and Dr. Dre. At the time such a signing bonus was unheard of, but being that 50 Cent was the hottest rapper on the free agent market thanks to his G-Unit mixtape series record labels were trying to woo him to their companies, but Eminem and Dr. Dre ended up with the winning bid.

After he signed the deal, 50 Cent clearly remembers that Damon Dash dismissing the amount of money he was paid as basically chicken feed and that seems to be something that bugs 50 to this day. Replying to Wallo about how much he was paid to sign to Shady Records, 50 Cent recalled, “A million dollars… and the only person that pointed out that a million dollars was no money was Damon Dash and he has no money now.”
Well damn, 50. Tell them how you really feel.
Reflecting on Dame’s comments 50 continued “I only felt that because he said ‘That ain’t no money. After you get your watch, chain, look out for the homies… it’s nothing.’ And I was like, ‘I’m from 134th Street. B, nah that’s a lot of money. I think I hit the lotto. How you gonna say that’s no money? I just never forgot that because of how that felt.”
Though that was a big damn deal back in 2002, at the time Jay-Z and Damon Dash had the rap game in a chokehold with their Roc-A-Fella Records imprint and were probably making millions of dollars on a weekly basis. So of course that was just pocket change to someone like Damon Dash.
Unfortunately for Dame, he’s since seen his net worth plummet past the basement and has recently been ordered to sell his stake in Roc-A-Fella Records to satisfy some outstanding debt.
Will he reply to 50 Cent’s story is anyone’s guess, but we’re not sure he’ll want to open up that can of worms as we all know Fiddy lives to troll any and everyone who he feels gets out of pocket with him.

Check out 50 Cent’s talk about that moment and let us know your thoughts on the situation below.

50 Cent says Dame Dash has no money now and calls Dame Dash out for telling him that the $1 million he received from signing with Eminem’s Shady Records was no money.

NLE Choppa wants his LGBTQ+ fans to know one thing: he’s an ally.
Despite making some headway, Hip-Hop still has a polarizing relationship (looking at you, Boosie) with the LGBTQ+ community, but NLE Choppa is making a legitimate case that rappers can change that.

NLE Choppa’s fanbase has expanded thanks to recent hits like “Slut Me Out” and “Slut Me Out 2,” which has caught on with the LGBTQ+ community.

On Sunday, September 1, the Memphis-born rapper performed at the Atlanta Black Pride event and explained why he was doing what he does best on that particular stage.
“A lot of muthaf**kas will ask me, ‘Man, you a rapper, what you doing at a club like this?’ Well I say ‘F**k them ni**as.’ You wanna know why?” NLE said while addressing the crowd. “I ain’t gon’ lie, man, every day we wake up and we fight acceptance every day. Whether it’s our skin color, whether if it’s our weight, Whether it’s what our sexuality is.”
He continued, “And listen, at the end of the day, I believe in one thing, I feel like everyone is equal, no matter how they drink their water, how they eat their food, how they piss, sh*t, or muthaf**kin’ sleep, you feel me?”

That’s real.
NLE Choppa Is On A New Path
NLE Choppa has made headlines not only because of his music but because of recent lifestyle changes. He went on a celibacy journey, revealing he practiced semen retention.
In a recent cover story for CassiusLife, NLE Choppa also discussed becoming a vegan and making changes he said he “desperately” needed to make.
“I did a lot of self-reflecting. Changed my personality, stopped hanging around certain people,” Choppa told the website. “That’s why I say the pandemic was one of the most important parts of my life. … Just knowing that I had a daughter conceiving at the moment, it really made me grow up.”

Salute to NLE Choppa.

Earlier this summer New York State Governor Kathy Hochul implemented a mask ban after masked pro-Palestine protestors began harassing people in public around New York City and after doing so other cities and counties followed suit which led to this week’s first arrest under the controversial mask ban law.

According to The New York Times, 18-year-old Wesslin Omar Ramirez Castillo was booked this past Sunday (Aug. 25) after police say he was spotted walking alone and masked down Spindle Road in Hicksville, Long Island. Though he wasn’t engaged in any protest or bothering anyone in his proximity, he ran afoul of Nassau County’s recent Mask Transparency Act which was passed earlier this month to combat antisemitic incidents which have risen in recent months over the protests over the conflict in Palestine.
Though wearing a mask is a misdemeanor offense, a search of Castillo uncovered a bigger problem for the 18-year-old.
The New York Times reports:

When police officers arrived, they frisked Mr. Castillo and discovered a 14-inch knife in the waistband of his pants, the department said in a statement on Tuesday. He was charged on Monday with several crimes, including criminal possession of a weapon and a violation of the mask law.
“Our police officers were able to use the mask ban legislation as well as other factors to stop and interrogate an individual who was carrying a weapon with the intent to engage in a robbery,” Mr. Blakeman said in a statement. “Passing this law gave police another tool to stop this dangerous criminal.”
Scott Banks, the chief attorney of the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, said Legal Aid was representing Mr. Castillo. Mr. Banks declined to comment on the case.
Castillo played himself both wearing a ski mask (in August) and having a deadly weapon. Everyone knows that you either have one or the other when walking the streets because people will assume that if you’re wearing a mask (especially in the summer) you might have something else on you. In this case they were right. SMH.
But how man stop and frisks turn up nothing, though?
Though there are exceptions for wearing a mask in public (religious or health-related reasons), anyone else could be subject to a fine of $1,000, a year in prison or both.
