Lewis Capaldi can almost taste victory in the U.K. chart race.
The Scottish singer and songwriter will be hard to beat, as Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent (EMI) notches 68,000 chart sales by the midweek point, the Official Charts Company reports, and is currently outselling the rests of the top 20 combined.

It’s on track to overtake  Ed Sheeran’s Subtract (Asylum) as the year’s fastest-selling LP, and push Sheeran’s album from the summit after a two-week stay (Subtract opened with 76,000 chart sales).

Assuming Capaldi reigns supreme when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published Friday, May 26, it’ll give the Scot his second leader after his 2019 debut Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which has passed one million U.K. combined sales and features the global hit “Someone You Loved,” which is recognized by the OCC as the most-streamed song in the U.K.

Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent is already a hit machine. Three songs from it, “Forget Me,” “Pointless,” and “Wish You The Best,” have led the Official U.K. Singles Chart.

Capaldi leads an all-new top four on the Official Chart Update. Based on midweek sales and streaming data, ‘80s rockers Def Leppard could debut at No. 2 with Drastic Symphonies (Mercury), a collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, while fellow British rock band Sleep Token could complete the podium with Take Me Back To Eden (Spinefarm), set to arrive at No. 3.

Close behind is Swedish rock act Ghost with their covers EP Phantomime (Loma Vista), set to start at No. 4, while Sheeran’s Subtract is poised to drop 1-5.

Also eyeing top 10 berths are veteran prog-rock group Yes with Mirror To The Sky (Century Media), at No. 6 on the chart update, and iconic U.S. singer and songwriter Paul Simon with Seven Psalms (Sony Music CG), set to bow at No. 9.

Finally, as fans mourn the death of the Smiths’ bass player Andy Rourke, the indie legends’ music is providing some comfort. The Smiths’ hits compilation The Sound of The Smiths (Rhino) could return to top 40, at No. 30.

Lana Del Rey‘s long-overdue release of “Say Yes To Heaven” (via Polydor) could immediately land her a U.K. top 10. The U.S. alternative pop star blasts to No. 8 on the chart update, and is on track for the week’s top debut. Co-written and produced in 2012 with her frequent collaborator Rick Nowels, “Heaven” was […]

Ed Sheeran is unmoved at the summit of the U.K. albums survey as – (Subtract) (via Asylum) logs a second week at No. 1. The English singer and songwriter has a perfect six No. 1s, with all of his albums logging multiple weeks at the top. Just one week after scooping the year-best sales tally in the U.K., Subtract is set to chase down another target. It’ll draw level with the three-week reign of Sheeran’s 2011 debut set + (plus) if it holds its position when the next chart is published, Friday, May 26.The highest new entry on the latest chart, published May 19, belongs to English rapper Potter Payper, as his debut full-length LP Real Back in Style (0207) starts at No. 2. That’s a career high for the artist (real name: Jamel Bousbaa), who previously cracked the top 10 with 2020 mixtape Training Day 3 (No. 3) and 2021’s Thanks for Waiting (No. 8). Completing the podium is Jonas Brothers with The Album (Polydor), new at No. 3. It’s the fourth top 10 LP for the brothers Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas, following 2007 debut Jonas Brothers (No. 8), 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times (No. 9) and 2019’s record Happiness Begins (No. 2).Also new to the top 10 on the fresh Official U.K. Albums Chart is Brighton, England indie-rock act Lovejoy with their third EP Wake Up & It’s Over (Anvil Cat). It’s new at No. 5, for the four-piece’s first-ever top 10 appearance, bettering the No. 12 peak for 2021’s Pebble Brain. And finally, Alison Goldfrapp grabs her first solo top 10 album, as The Love Invention (Skint) starts at No. 6. As the singer for electro-pop duo Goldfrapp, alongside Will Gregory, the British artist boasts a further five U.K. Top 10 albums: 2005’s Supernature (No. 2), 2008’s Seventh Tree (No. 2), 2010’s Head First (No. 6), 2013’s Tales of Us (No. 4) and 2017’s Silver Eye (No. 6).

Loreen very nearly made it two wins in the space of a week.
Sweden’s representative at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest won by a landslide with “Tattoo”. And in the U.K., “Tattoo” (via UMG International) has made a big impression with music fans, as it gathered momentum through the chart week.

“Tattoo” debuts at No. 2 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published last Friday (May 19), in a tight race won by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding’s “Miracle” (Columbia).

According to the Official Charts Company, “Miracle” clocked up a market-leading 5.1 million U.K. streams during the latest seven-day stretch, for its sixth non-consecutive week at No. 1.

Meanwhile, Loreen lands a new career high, beating the No. 3 best for “Euphoria,” her winning entry from the 2012 Eurovision.

“Tattoo” leads a “record-breaking” charge for Eurovision songs in the U.K. top 10, the OCC reports, as Finland act Käärijä’s “Cha Cha Cha” (No. 6 via WM Finland), U.K. entry Mae Muller’s “I Wrote A Song” (up 45-9 via Capitol) and Norway singer Alessandra’s “Queen of Kings” (No. 10 via Universal Music AS) all enter the top tier for the first time, following the recent song contest, the final of which took place held at May 13 at Liverpool’s M&S Arena.

Further down the list, Chicago hip-hop artist Lil Durk bags his third U.K. top 40 appearance as “All My Life” (Ministry of Sound) featuring J Cole starts at No. 17, while east coast drill rapper Lil Mabu cracks the top 40 for the first time with “Mathematical Disrespect” (Lil Mabu), new at No. 27.

Finally, two songs are enjoying revivals for totally different reasons. Florence + The Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” (Island), which appeared on the English act’s 2009 album Lungs, is on the rise following its sync to Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. It’s up 27-21.

And as the U.K. leg of her Renaissance World Tour gets underway, Beyonce’s “Cuff It” (Columbia/Parkwood Ent) reenters the chart at No. 24.

After sweeping the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest with “Tattoo,” Sweden’s Loreen has another prize in view — a U.K. top 10.
Loreen’s Eurovision winner is making a charge. After appearing at No. 28 on the U.K.’s First Look chart, which measures the popularity of songs after the first 48 hours of the cycle, “Tattoo” climbs to No. 9 on the midweek chart.

If it continues to stick in the days ahead, “Tattoo” will give Loreen her second U.K. top 10 after 2012’s “Euphoria” went to No. 3. “Euphoria” won Eurovision that year, held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

At Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on Saturday night (May 13), Loreen became the first female artist to win Eurovision, with 583 points.

Meanwhile, Mae Muller continues on her mission for a maiden U.K. top 10 appearance with her own Eurovision entry, “I Wrote A Song.” Though Muller’s song wasn’t a hit with the Eurovision jury and viewers, limping-in second-from-last (with 24 points), the English artist’s song rises to No. 6 on the Official Chart Update.

Co-written by Mae, Karen Poole of Alisha’s Attic and Lewis Thompson, “I Wrote A Song” should convincingly outperform its No. 30 peak, set in March of this year.

According to the Official Charts Company, two other Eurovision numbers are set to crack the U.K. top 40. Norway’s Alessandra could nab her first U.K. top 40 appearance with “Queen of Kings,” new at No. 18 on the chart blast. Alessandra and “Queen of Kings” placed fifth in the grand final.

Also, Eurovision runner-up Käärijä of Finland could make a top 40 debut with “Cha Cha Cha,” new at No. 21 on the chart update.

At the top of the chart blast is “Miracle,” Calvin Harris’ hit collaboration with Ellie Goulding which is targeting a sixth non-consecutive week at the summit.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday (May 19).

After sprinting to the summit last week with year-best sales figures, Ed Sheeran’s – (pronounced Subtract) is unlikely to budge anytime soon.
Sheeran’s latest set leads the midweek U.K. tally for a second week, ahead of batch of new releases.

The English singer and songwriter’s sixth studio LP accumulated 76,000 first-week combined sales, easily the fastest-selling album in the U.K. this year, eclipsing the 41,000 chart units shifted by Lana Del Rey’s Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.

Physical copies accounted for 71% of the Asylum set’s first-week total, the Official Charts Company reported, with an additional 10% from downloads.

Sheeran boasts a perfect six No. 1s, dating back to his 2011 full-length debut +, then x (from 2014), ÷ (2017), No. 6 Collaborations Project (2019) and = (2021). All of those LPs logged multiple weeks at No. 1, with 2017’s Divide the undisputed king with 20 weeks on the chart throne.

Coming in at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update is Wake Up & It’s Over (via Anvil Cat), the third EP from Brighton, England indie pop band Lovejoy. If Wake Up holds its form, it’ll give the four-piece a first top 10 appearance, bettering the No. 12 best for 2021 EP Pebble Brain.

Goldfrapp leader Alison Goldfrapp completes the podium at the midweek stage with her solo effort The Love Invention (Skint). It arrives at No. 3 on the chart blast, and could score the singer her first solo top 10. As a member of electronic act Goldfrapp with Will Gregory, the British artist has five U.K. top 10 albums.

Meanwhile, U.S. pop siblings Jonas Brothers are eyeing a No. 4 debut with The Album (Polydor), their sixth studio LP, and Daft Punk’s final album Random Access Memories (Columbia) is set to return at No. 5 thanks to a 10th anniversary reissue campaign.

British rapper Potter Payper (Real Back In Style at No. 6 via 0207); powerhouse Welsh electronic duo Overmono (Good Lies at No. 7 via XL Recordings); and U.S. singer-songwriter BC Camplight (The Last Rotation of Earth at No. 9 via Bella Union) are on track for top 10 berths.

All will be revealed this Friday (May 19) with the publication of the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

Europe didn’t care much for it, but the British are falling for Mae Muller’s “I Wrote A Song.”Muller had the honor of representing her homeland, the United Kingdom, at the Eurovision Song Contest, the grand final of which was presented Saturday night (May 13) at Liverpool Arena. The U.K. so often flounders at Eurovision, and Muller’s entry had an underwhelming reaction from the Eurovision panel and with viewers, coming second-from-last with just 24 “public” and “jury” votes, well off the pace of winners Sweden with 583 combined points. Despite that lackluster feedback, Muller’s song is heading for its first U.K. top 10 appearance, and should handsomely beat its No. 30 peak, set in March of this year.Based on sales and streaming data captured from the first 48 hours of the chart cycle, “I Wrote A Song” is on track to lift 36 places to No. 9. If it holds its chart tune, the song, co-written with Karen Poole and Lewis Thompson, will give Mae her first top tier appearance. Meanwhile, Sweden’s Loreen should experience that winning feeling all over again on the U.K. chart, as her Eurovision winning song “Tattoo” is poised to debut at No. 28. On the weekend, Loreen became the first woman to win Eurovision twice, and the second artist overall after Johnny Logan, the Melbourne-born Irish singer. At the pointy end of the chart blast, Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding are shuffling to a sixth non-consecutive week at No. 1 with “Miracle”. It’s one of several dance music tunes on the way up, including Switch Disco and Ella Henderson’s “React” (No. 6) and David Guetta, Anne-Marie and Coi Leray’s “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” (No. 10), while K-pop girl group Fifty Fifty is flying to a new high of No. 7 with “Cupid”.

It’s another chart miracle in the U.K., as Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding’s throwback rave number bags a fifth non-consecutive week at No. 1. According to the Official Charts Company, “Miracle” (via Columbia) is once again the most-streamed track of the week in the U.K., with 5.1 million plays, to lord over the chart published May 12. […]

With a blockbuster sales week, Ed Sheeran‘s – (subtract) flies to No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart, extending his perfect streak.
The English singer and songwriter’s sixth studio LP notches 76,000 combined sales in its first seven-day cycle, easily the fastest-selling album in the U.K. this year, blitzing the 41,000 chart units shifted by Lana Del Rey’s Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.

According to the Official Charts Company, physical copies account for 71% of the Asylum set’s total, with an additional 10% from downloads. Subtract is also the best-seller on wax.

In the end, Subtract won the chart race in a canter. By the midweek point, the LP had moved into a near-unbeatable position with more than 56,000 combined units.

Sheeran now boasts a perfect six No. 1s, dating back to his 2011 full-length debut +, then x (from 2014), ÷ (2017), No. 6 Collaborations Project (2019) and = (2021).

And with that unbroken string of leaders, Sheeran climbs the ranks of acts who’ve scaled the summit with every studio album. The “Shape of You” singer scoots past the 1975 on the list. Only Noel Gallagher with 10 albums, including his recordings with Oasis and as frontman of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds; Brandon Flowers and Coldplay (with nine); and the Killers and Oasis (seven) are ahead of him.

Also new to the Official U.K. Albums Chart, published May 12, is Tunde with First Lap (via Tunde). It’s new at No. 4, for the Manchester rapper’s first top 10 appearance.

Also enjoying his first solo top 40 appearance is former Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan, with The Reckoning (Destruct). It’s new at No. 17. Meighan split with Kasabian in 2020 to deal with “personal issues,” he said at the time, leaving a group that had reigned over the chart with five albums. With guitarist Sergio Pizzorno taking-on vocal duties, the band last year added another No. 1 with The Alchemist’s Euphoria.

When Taylor Swift speaks, she scores. That’s precisely what happened when the superstar U.S. singer announced Speak Now would be the next to undergo a full rerecording. The 2010 collection (via Mercury) rebounds into the top 40 for the first time in 13 years, the OCC reports, up 54-23, and is one of six Swift albums impacting this week’s U.K. top tier. Speak Now peaked out at No. 6 following its original release. Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is due out July 7.

Finally, Northern Irish rock trio Therapy? bags a sixth top 40 album and highest-charting title in 25 years, as Hard Cold Fire (Marshall) debuts at No. 29 on the latest tally.

When Ed Sheeran releases new music, his fellow Brits tune-in en masse. That’s certainly been the case since the release last week of Subtract, the fifth and final release in his mathematics-themed collection.

Based on sales and streaming data captured from the early stages of the chart week, Sheeran is on track for two top ten singles, including the debutant “Curtains.” The album track is set to arrive at No. 10 on the national survey, for what would be Sheeran’s 42nd U.K. top 10 appearance.

Also on the First Look chart, former leader “Eyes Closed,” the first release from Subtract, and a track Sheeran performed Sunday on ABC’s American Idol, is set to lift 6-3 on the U.K. chart. Meanwhile, Sheeran’s “Boat” should sail into the top 20, at No. 12, well advanced on its peak position of No. 46.

The English singer and songwriter is a perfect five-for-five on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, including 2019’s No 6 Collaborations Project. Subtract is expected to keep his streak intact.

Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” hasn’t had its wings clipped. After cracking the U.K. top 10 last Friday (May 5), earning Fifty Fifty the distinction as the first K-pop girl group to do so, the viral number could lift to No. 8.

Also on the chart blast, David Guetta, Anne-Marie and Coi Leray’s “Baby Don’t Hurt Me,” which interpolates Haddaway’s ’90s house number, is hovering just outside the top tier. It’s up 13-11 on the chart blast.

Bring Me The Horizon is on track for a sixth top 40 and the British rockers’ first-ever top 20 single with “LosT.” After 48 hours, the single makes an impact at No. 15.

Finally, British punk outfit Krown Jewelz could net another top 40 appearance with the protest song, “Scrap The Monarchy”. It’s new at No. 17 on the chart blast. Krown Jewelz is the act otherwise known as the K**ts, whose blistering bids for the Christmas No. 1 has landed top 10s in three consecutive years.

At the top of the chart blast, “Miracle,” the ’90s throwback rave tune by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding, is heading for a fifth week at No. 1.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday (May 12).
