Cynthia Erivo Slams ‘Offensive’ & ‘Deeply Hurtful’ Fan Edits of ‘Wicked’ Poster With Ariana Grande

Cynthia Erivo has seen the internet’s Wicked memes, and she’s not a fan.

On Wednesday (Oct. 16), the singer-actress blasted a few of the viral edits of the upcoming film’s new poster, which finds Erivo staring at the camera as costar Ariana Grande whispers in her ear in a reimagining of the original Broadway poster for the Wicked musical. When the new poster dropped earlier this month, however, some fans were unhappy that it wasn’t a more exact recreation, which led to people editing the new poster so that it looked more akin to the original — but Erivo isn’t letting it fly.

“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen,” said the artist — whose album Ch. 1 Vs. 1 peaked at No 77 on the Top Album Sales chart in 2021 — sharing one of the edits on her Instagram Story. “The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer …because, without words we communicate with our eyes.”

“Our poster is an homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me,” she continued. “And that is just deeply hurtful.”

Trending on Billboard

Erivo added that the edited posters were “equal to that awful Ai of us fighting” — referring to a viral AI-generated video that animates a fight between the EGOT winner and “Yes, And?” singer using their likenesses on the movie poster — and “equal to” a past meme joking about the color of her famously green-skinned character’s private parts. “None of this is funny,” she wrote. “None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.”

The Pinocchio star plays Elphaba — aka the Wicked Witch of the West — in the upcoming film duology, the first installment of which hits theaters Nov. 22. Grande is locked in as Glinda the Good Witch, with Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang and Ethan Slater rounding out the cast.

After saying her piece on the edits, Erivo shared the Wicked movie’s actual poster on her Story to “cleanse your palette,” she told viewers. About three hours later, Grande also shared the poster on her own Story.

In addition to reliving her meteoric rise to stardom, fans will be brought into the pain Meg endured with the loss of her mother in 2019, which left her directionless, and how she navigated the backlash and trauma following the Tory Lanez shooting in 2020.

Lanez is currently behind bars after being sentenced in August 2023 to 10 years for the shooting; he was convicted in December 2022 on three felony counts for shooting the rapper in the feet during a drunken dispute.

“I want people to understand how this is affecting me,” she says at one point in the trailer, while shedding tears. “I want people to see how I feel.”

She shared: “I was definitely getting a little too engulfed in social media.”

Meg’s Hotties will go on a journey that will show them the three-time Grammy Award winner at her lowest and highest, as well as the hard work that goes into being Megan Thee Stallion, including laborious rehearsals, late-night studio sessions and non-stop traveling — all while getting her college degree.

TIME Studios, Roc Nation and Amazon MGM Studios produced the documentary; Nneka Onuorah sits in the director’s chair.

“I feel so honored to work with Amazon MGM Studios, Roc Nation and TIME Studios to share Megan’s story,” Onuorah said in a statement. “Her raw and beautiful spirit really shines through in the film. She is a champion for all women who deserve their truth to be heard.”

Despite going up against several hot new releases, JENNIE’s song won the vote by a landslide, coming in at over 81% by the time the poll closed on Sunday.

Voters chose “Mantra” over new music releases from Charli XCX, Halsey, Tyla, Jelly Roll, Becky G, GloRilla and Rod Wave.

The Jacksonville, Florida, native performs LeAnn Rimes’ 1996 hit “One Way Ticket (Because I Can)” in the audition, premiering exclusively on Billboard below, and her breezy-yet-steady vocal ability, paired with her charming country twang, immediately catches the attention of Gwen Stefani, who turns her chair around within the first few notes of Katie O.’s performance.

Snoop Dogg follows, as do Michael Bublé and country superstar McEntire — much to the dismay of Stefani, who playfully whines at one point, “Why is Reba here?”

Trending on Billboard

“You got a lot of heart and soul when you’re singing, and you were so cute when I turned around, so I thought that was cute,” McEntire tells Katie O., who was visibly excited to see the “Fancy” singer on her side. “I love that. I love your smile too.”

Stefani, however, put up a good fight by telling the teen, “I pressed my button as fast as I could, as soon as I heard your voice. I really like to work with young girls. … You know what’s crazy? — and it’s before you turned around, Reba — you were moving around, walking around, your voice was so secure and strong and so composed. I would love to have you on Team Gwen.”

Snoop was no help to Stefani’s cause, when he points out how much Katie O. and McEntire are alike. “You know what? When you talk, you sound exactly like her,” the rapper tells the young musical hopeful.

Watch Katie O.’s full audition below, and tune in to The Voice on Tuesday night to see who she picks as her coach. New episodes air Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes of The Voice stream on-demand via Peacock the next day after they air on TV, but you can also watch live with Peacock Premium Plus.

In Her Words was originally announced in May 2022, and about two-and-a-half years later, the documentary will land on Prime Video on Halloween.

“We are thrilled to be able to work with Roc Nation to share Megan’s story with the world,” TIMES Studios’ Loren Hammonds said at the time. “Millions of people are familiar with her as an entertainer, but this series will give her a chance to share her truth as never before. Her story is a powerful one, and the accomplishments that she continues to achieve are remarkable. We feel lucky to have this opportunity to capture her at a crucial moment in her life and career, as she continues to grow exponentially in both her artistry and global impact.”

It’s a busy spooky season for Megan Thee Stallion. In addition to the doc’s upcoming arrival, the 29-year-old will hit the stage for 2024’s Hottieween at Chicago’s United Center on Oct. 31 in an event she’s promising will be “bigger than ever.”

Sabrina Carpenter Reacts to Ariana Grande’s Hilarious Pitch-Imperfect ‘Espresso’ Spoof on ‘SNL’

Ariana Grande was working late on Saturday Night Live this weekend, ’cause she’s a singer — not that you would’ve been able to tell from her hilarious spoof of Sabrina Carpenter‘s “Espresso” during the live comedy show Saturday (Oct. 12).

And one day after the sketch — which featured the Wicked star stumbling through parody lyrics set to the tune of the summer smash as part of an awkward bridesmaid tribute — the “Please Please Please” musician shared her reaction. “Very nice and on pitch,” Carpenter sarcastically joked on her Instagram Story, reposting a clip of the skit and adding a couple heart emojis.

The Girl Meets World alum also tagged Grande and the SNL cast members who played bridesmaids alongside the “We Can’t Be Friends” artist in the wedding reception-themed sketch: Heidi Gardner, Sarah Sherman and Ego Nwodim. While toasting a bride played by Chloe Fineman in front of her groom, played by Andrew Dismukes, the quartet reveals through their rendition of “Espresso” that their bachelorette party trip wasn’t exactly innocent.

Trending on Billboard

“Now we’re back in the house in the hot tub/ She’s there with Domingo,” the bridesmaids sing to the chorus melody of Carpenter’s Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit as Dismukes watches in horror. “Asks us to leave, get a hotel/ She’s vibing with Domingo.”

Sharing the “Feather” singer’s appraisal on her own Instagram Story, Grande replied, “tysm we tried.”

The “Espresso” skit was just one of several hilarious moments in the Grande-hosted episode Saturday. Though she made a concerted effort not to show off her usually fabulous vocals in the bridesmaid toast, the three-time Grammy winner did get to put her talents to use in a couple other scenes — despite Stevie Nicks appearing as musical guest instead of her.

In her opening monologue, for instance, Grande belted out a few runs in front of a kick line moments after pledging to keep her appearance on the show low-key. Elsewhere, the pop star impersonated Celine Dion, sang an ode to the singular scent of one’s best friend’s house and flexed her opera chops while portraying a young Italian music prodigy named Antonio.

Grande’s second time hosting comes eight years after she first led the show in 2016, and seven months after she appeared as musical guest earlier this year to perform tracks from her Billboard 200-topping album Eternal Sunshine. In May, Carpenter made her SNL debut, singing “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” on the Jake Gyllenhaal-hosted program.

Ariana Grande’s Return as ‘SNL’ Host: All 7 Sketches Ranked

Ariana Grande hosted SNL for a second time and starred in seven sketches that made it to air Saturday night (Oct. 12) in an episode that seemed made for the skilled impressionist.

Grande’s list of roles on SNL this weekend: an aggressive mother, Celine Dion, a bridesmaid wrecking a wedding with “Espresso,” a tween, one of several Jennifer Coolidges, a dame entangled with a hotel detective, and a little Italian renaissance boy with an unfortunate bowl cut, whose falsetto developed in an unfortunate way. Needless to say, she had a shot at showing some range as a performer. (Audience reports say she was also set to reprise her portrayal of Judy Garland in a “Cinema Classics” segment. It was cut for time but performed during dress rehearsal.)

After a musical monologue that was not meant to be musical — yet had the singer-actress sneaking in spot-on Britney and Miley impersonations, while singing a song about how she wasn’t supposed to be singing — Grande got on with the show, which welcomed Stevie Nicks as the actual musical guest.

Grande’s Saturday Night Live sketches were a mix of live and pre-taped, and live-show nerves didn’t rattle her. She giggled once; she fumbled only one line, in a charades-gone-psycho skit. She caught herself so quickly most wouldn’t think twice of it.

More memorable was how well she catered her dialect to each character, from the iconic Dion to the female lead of a film noir riddled with ridiculously rapid dialogue.

While the Eternal Sunshine hitmaker has hosted SNL twice now, she’s actually acted in four different episodes — since she was also written into sketches both times she was booked as musical guest only. (Remember that surprise Moulin Rouge spoof earlier this year?)

But for now, let’s focus on recapping Grande’s performance during her latest turn as host.

Here’s a ranking of every sketch Grande was in Saturday night, when SNL‘s Oct. 12 episode aired. Watch all seven sketches below.

Here’s How Oasis’ Liam Gallagher Reacted to ‘SNL’ Poking Fun at His Feud With Brother Noel

Liam Gallagher isn’t amused by Saturday Night Live‘s take on his tumultuous relationship with brother Noel.

The long-feuding Oasis siblings were portrayed by SNL cast members James Austin Johnson (Noel) and Sarah Sherman (Liam) during the “Weekend Update” segment of the long-running NBC sketch comedy show’s episode on Oct. 12.

In the sketch, “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost interviews the brothers about the North American leg of their 2025 Oasis reunion tour and whether they’ll break up before the launch.

“I’m cool if he’s cool,” Johnson’s Noel responds. “I’m cool, I’m cool, I’m cooler than you are,” Sherman’s Liam hits back. Unconvinced, Jost says, “Great. So, that’s a no.”

Trending on Billboard

The skit continues with Noel and Liam mostly bickering and answering questions with the lyrics of “Wonderwall,” while only agreeing on topics like cartoon characters, their favorite Sex in the City boyfriend, and the best Will Smith film.

Sherman’s Liam also claims their feud began at London’s Wembley Stadium in 1993 when Noel told the Spice Girls that his brother had a “crooked knob — you said me knob bended like Beckham!”

As expected, the real Liam Gallagher didn’t take too kindly to SNL‘s interpretation of his relationship with Noel. “Are they meant to be comedians,” he commented on X (formerly Twitter) early Sunday under a post linked to the skit.

Oasis announced their long-awaited reunion tour in late August. The global trek is scheduled to launch in September 2025 with multiple dates in the United Kingdom, followed by performances in North America, Europe, and Australia.

Oasis split in 2009 after years of massive chart success and tabloid headlines in the U.K. tied to the Gallagher siblings’ fierce rivalry, with main songwriter older brother Noel quitting the band after a backstage fight with Liam at a show near Paris that year. The brothers haven’t performed live since then, though they often play Oasis songs during their solo gigs and with their side bands and, until the reunion announcement, continued to snipe at each other online and in the press.

Watch SNL‘s “Weekend Update” with Oasis sketch below. For those without cable, the broadcast streams on Peacock, which you can sign up for at the link here. Having a Peacock account also gives fans access to previous SNL episodes.
