Gallagher, the long-haired, smash-’em-up comedian who left a trail of laughter, anger and shattered watermelons over a decadeslong career, has died at age 76.
Craig Marquardo, in a statement identifying himself as Gallagher’s “longtime former manager,” said that he died Friday (Nov. 11) at his home in Palm Springs, California, after a brief illness. Gallagher had numerous heart attacks over the years, including one right before a scheduled show in Texas in 2012.

With a beret on his head and a few simple props, from a can of oil to a bull whip, the man born Leo Anthony Gallagher Jr. built a nationwide following in the 1970s and ’80s, appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and starring in numerous Showtime specials. His act included observational humor (“What about Easter? Whose idea was it to give eggs to an animal that hops?”), political commentary (“They don’t call a tax a tax. They call it a revenue enhancer”), invented sports (synchronized Ping-Pong) and his trademark Sledge-O-Matic destruction.

“Ladies and gentlemen! I did not come here tonight just to make you laugh. I came here to sell you something, and I want you to pay particular attention!” he would call out in his best rapid-fire impersonation of a late-night television pitchman. “The amazing Master Tool Corporation, a subsidiary of Fly-By-Night Industries, has entrusted who? Me! To show you! The handiest and the dandiest kitchen tool you’ve ever seen.”

Sledgehammer in hand, he would then apply his full muscle to apples, grapes, lettuce and other produce, most famously the inevitable watermelon, with audience members in front showered in food bits.

Gallagher was a Fort Bragg, North Carolina, native who started out in 1960 as road manager for the comedian/musician Jim Stafford and soon began performing himself, honing his act at the Comedy Store and other clubs. He was not the only funnyman in the family: His younger brother Ron became a comedian, received Leo’s initial blessing and looked and acted enough like his better-known sibling that some audiences were unsure who they had come to see. Leo Gallagher eventually secured a court injunction barring his brother from using his routines.

The elder Gallagher became increasingly controversial in recent years, chastised for racist and homophobic remarks. Gallagher even cut short an interview in 2011 with Marc Maron after the WTF podcast host confronted him about his statements.

“I’m the problem?!” Gallagher said at one point. “Do you think when I’m dead, gays will finally have an opportunity in America? Have I really been holding them down?”

In 2003, Gallagher was among more than 100 candidates running in the recall election for California governor, won by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Over the past decade, Gallagher appeared in a Geico commercial and in the movie The Book of Daniel.

It’s Wakanda forever! The day has arrived (Friday, Nov. 11) where the much-anticipated Black Panther sequel will be watched in theaters across the nation. Along with the film, the soundtrack to the movie arrived last Friday, with appearances from the likes of Tems, Future, E-40 — and the collection’s marquee attraction, Rihanna’s first new single in six years, “Lift Me Up.”
Ludwig Göransson, who won his first Oscar for best original score for Black Panther, worked on the soundtrack, including “Lift Me Up.”

“It was extremely special. Ryan and I created this spark, and Tems and Rihanna sort of turned that spark into a supernova,” Göransson tells Billboard. “They’re each tapped into something that borders on the divine — and looking back, it almost felt like ‘Lift Me Up’ had a life of its own, floating around the world, which felt right both for the film and the person who inspired it.”

The film’s director, Ryan Coogler, echoes these sentiments, saying that working with Tems, Rihanna, and Göransson was a rewarding experience. Göransson and Coogler’s relationship goes back over a decade and it’s “always great to collaborate with him,” he says.

“Tems, I’ve become very fond of in recent years, since learning about her and her story. I was amazed to be able to sit with her and have her contribute her artistry and genius to the song,” Coogler continues. “Rihanna, I’ve been listening to her since she came out, since ‘Pon de Replay.’ And her music has had a very meaningful effect on my life and the life of my family. I think back on some of our most memorable moments, and she was like a soundtrack for a lot of them. So it was amazing that it worked out.”

Göransson notes that the lullaby came together when he and Coogler flew to Nigeria to meet with artists and experience the music there. The pair talked about what kind of song they wanted to write for the late Panther Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 at 43 after a battle with colon cancer. Coogler then started writing lyrics in his notebook on a flight, after hearing some chords Göransson had written and recorded.

While Coogler says he doesn’t consider himself a songwriter, he still felt honored to write the lyrics to the song. “I didn’t want to not do what he asked me to do,” Coogler says.

“We worked on a melody, which would become the chorus, and brought those ideas to Tems in Lagos,” Göransson continues. “She really brought it to life. Rihanna saw the movie a few months after becoming a mother and wanted to get involved — so we spent three weeks kind of painstakingly going through every part of it and it just came together.”

Co-Producer of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Archie Davis, who has produced films Judas and The Black Messiah and Space Jam: A New Legacy, says that the song and the project as a whole changed the mourning process of Boseman for him in many ways. “I think it’s probably the most beautiful sonic love letter I ever could’ve imagined,” he says.

When it comes to the late Boseman, Davis hopes his legacy is remembered by people forever. “He was our Black Panther, and that goes beyond what he displayed on film.”

Now that the film is released, Coogler can’t wait for viewers to finally see it. “It’s just belonged to us for four years, so I’m excited to get it out to people and see what they think,” he says.

Göransson is similarly breathless about the film’s long-anticipated release: “I’m excited for audiences to connect with the story and the characters in a way that is uniquely intimate and deeply personal, and I’m excited for people to go home and be able to relive this experience with the soundtrack and the score.”

Twihards, this one’s for you. On the Friday (Nov. 11) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Kelly Clarkson dusted off a song from the Twilight films’ soundtracks for her latest Kellyoke cover: “Heavy In Your Arms” by Florence + the Machine.

Standing in the center of a stage flush with blood-red lights, the three-time Grammy winner’s crystal-clear vocals were so powerful throughout the performance, they had no trouble at all dominating the heavy drums, synths and guitars delivered by her band of backup musicians, Y’all.

“I’m so heavy, heavy, I’m so heavy in your arms,” she sang, taking the line’s striking final note even higher than Florence + the Machine frontwoman Florence Welch does in the original.

“Heavy In Your Arms” was originally released in 2010 as a single on the soundtrack for the third film in the Twilight franchise, Eclipse, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. In 2018, Billboard ranked it as the No. 9 best original song written for any of the franchise’s five films.

“I felt this was a strong theme in the Twilight series,” Welch has said, describing the gothic rock anthem’s lyrics. “Is someone being rescued or are they being condemned, and is the love you carry bringing you down?”

The new Kellyoke isn’t the first time Clarkson has paid tribute to Florence + the Machine — in fact, it’s not even the first time she’s performed “Heavy In Your Arms.” As some fans pointed out in the comments, the “Stronger” singer actually covered the track while on tour in 2012, and just a couple months ago, she sang Welch’s 2010 hit “Dog Days Are Over” on her talk show.

Drew Barrymore is taking a break from her eponymous talk after testing positive for COVID-19. She announced on Thursday (Nov. 10) via Instagram that two celebs will be filling in for her while she recuperates.

“I’ve got covid and lucky the cat! Im good and will be back soon. In the meantime @helloross and @50cent are taking over,” Barrymore captioned a photo of herself lying in bed with pink glasses on and a cat at her side. “So only good news to report!!!!! Maybe some other special surprises too!”

While 50 Cent did not share a personal statement regarding his temporary stint on The Drew Barrymore Show, he did use his Instagram Story to repost a message from his PR company, AKR PR, wishing Barrymore well. “Feel better @drewbarrymore the show is in good hands with @50cent,” the post read.

Ross Mathews, TV show host and personality, hopped in the comments section to give his love to the actress. “LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! I’ll keep your seat warm for you until you come back. Rest. Take care of you. Watch the new season of The Crown. Text me if you need anything,” he wrote.

Mathews also shared a repost to his Instagram Story of his husband Dr. Wellinthon García wishing the actress well. “Sending love to our favorite flower girl @drewbarrymore – my hubby @helloross has you covered! We love you!!!” García wrote.

The hosting gig is hardly the first time the “In da Club” rapper has dabbled in the talk show space. In 2016, he guest co-hosted a 2016 episode of The View, and gave interviewing a try on the 2018 episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, when he asked Colbert some burning questions.

In the promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, Dave Chappelle tells cast member Ego Nwodim that he doesn’t have big plans for Thanksgiving. “I’m just gonna be on the farm with the wife and the kids and not watch football, you know, have a little pie, that kind of stuff,” he says.

But when Nwodim invites herself to join the comedian for his chillsgiving, he has second thoughts about sharing his address on national television. Chappelle’s third SNL hosting gig will once again coincide with a major national election and will feature musical support from his Midnight Miracle podcast brethren in Black Star, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli.

In fact, Chappelle says in the second promo, this weekend’s episode will be “so Black it’s gonna be on BET,” causing the hip-hop duo to crack up until Dave adds, “just kidding, it’s gonna be right here on NBC.” For the third spot, Nwodim questions whether it’s a good idea to have the unpredictable stand-up do it live. “In this news cycle?” Nwodim asks. “… Yup,” Chappelle assures her.

Chappelle is slated to join Chris Rock for a run of December arena dates that will kick off with a two-night stand at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl in San Diego (Dec. 1, 3), followed by a Dec. 5 gig at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, as well as shows in Anaheim, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento and Thousand Palms, California before wrapping up at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, WA on Dec. 16.

The official description for the film explains that Reeves’ character “uncovers a path to defeating the High Table, but before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”

Sawayama’s involvement in the film was announced back in 2021. “I’m so glad to have Rina on board to make her feature film debut in John Wick: Chapter 4,” director Chad Stahelski told Deadline at the time. “She’s an incredible talent who’ll bring so much to the film.”

Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams has been accused of making “derogatory and sexually explicit remarks” about contestants on the talent show.

According to an exposé in The Guardian, Walliams — one of the U.K.’s best-known TV personalities and a hugely successful children’s author — was heard in a recording of one episode of the show repeatedly calling one contestant the C-word and saying that another “thinks you want to f— her.”

According to the report, the comments were made during an audition show filmed at the London Palladium in January 2020 and had been picked up by microphones used to record conversations between the judges, for which the paper then saw the transcript.

Lawyers for Walliams and Thames TV, which produces Britain’s Got Talent, told The Guardian that the comments were part of a private conversation never intended for broadcast.

In one incident, the transcript claimed that Walliams described an older performer — after he had failed an audition and made a joke about the judge — as “a c—” three times. In another, after a female contestant walked offstage, Walliams described her as being “like the slightly boring girl you meet in the pub that thinks you want to f— them, but you don’t,” according to the transcript.

In a statement, Walliams said: “I would like to apologize to the people I made disrespectful comments about during breaks in filming for Britain’s Got Talent in 2020. These were private conversations and — like most conversations with friends — were never intended to be shared. Nevertheless, I am sorry.”

Fit for a queen! Mariah Carey was feeling all the emotions on Wednesday night (Nov. 9) as she tuned into the season five premiere of The Crown.

“THE CROWN premiered last night and of course I had to have my own screening dahhlings!” the icon captioned an Instagram video showing her lounging in her screening room in a tiara and silky white robe as she sips from a fancy tea cup, as her son Moroccan snoozes on a couch opposite her. Mimi then shared with the Lambs that her 1991 hit “Emotions” is featured in the first episode of the Netflix hit’s new season. “Seeeeee!” she exclaims with a big smile as the track begins to play.

Starring Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Leslie Manville, Dominic West, Jonny Lee Miller and Elizabeth Debicki, season five of The Crown charts the Britsh royal family’s lives throughout the 1990s, and will touch on major events including the tragic 1997 death of Princess Diana.

“Emotions” — which earned Mariah the fifth consecutive No. 1 of her career upon its release — is the latest throwback hit to get dusted off for a major Netflix sync following the likes of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal WIth God)” and Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” on season four of Stranger Things. (It’s worth noting both of those tracks saw impressive bumps on the charts after their respective episodes of the sci-fi series dropped on the streamer.)

Meanwhile, Carey just released her new children’s book, The Christmas Princess, and is currently gearing up for her quartet of Merry Christmas to All! holiday shows in New York City and Toronto. The string of festivities will also be followed by a two-hour primetime special on CBS.

Check out Mariah Carey watching The Crown’s season premiere:

The Masked Singer pulled out the big hitters on Wednesday night (Nov. 9), when two legitimate heavyweights were sent packing.
On “Hall of Fame Night,” Fox’s quirky hit pulled no punches when former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman and funk legend George Clinton were knocked out of the competition.

After performing The Temptations’ “Get Ready,” the Venus Flytrap accumulated the least votes and was giving his marching orders. The mask came off, revealing Muhammad Ali’s “Rumble in the Jungle opponent.” Foreman, the two-time world heavyweight champion and grill king.

He wasn’t the only champ to go home. Gopher got the chop, after facing off with The Bride in a battle royale, in which the contestants took turns singing Smashmouth’s “All-Star.”

Under the mask was the great George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic.

“Man it’s hot as hell in this, but I’m cool y’all,” explained Clinton, clearly relieved that the mask was off. And why did the funkster get the helmet on in this first place? “You’re always having too much fun on here,” he said. “I had to get some.”

They join the likes of Daymond John (Fortune Teller), the “Brady boys” Mike Lookinland, Barry Williams and Christopher Knight (Mummies), Montell Jordan (Panther), Jeff Dunham (Pi-Rat), Chris Kirkpatrick (Hummingbird), Eric Idle (Hedgehog) and William Shatner (Knight) as contestants revealed so far in the 2022 series.

TMS season 8 rings in the changes, with several big tweaks to its format.

For the first time, each episode features a completely new round of masked celebs with only one contestant moving forward by the end of the hour. Plus, the audience votes in-studio for their favorite performance of the night, and the singer with the lowest tally will then unmask in the middle of the show before taking his or her place in the new Masked Singer VIP section to watch the rest of the episode.
