Sam Smith helped usher Saturday Night Live into 2023 with a pair of dramatic performances from their upcoming album.
For their third appearance as musical guest on the iconic NBC sketch comedy show, the U.K. singer-songwriter unleashed unforgettable live performances of chart-topper “Unholy” and the title track from their soon-to-be-released fourth album, Gloria, which is scheduled to arrive on Jan. 27 through Capitol.
Following an introduction from SNL host Aubrey Plaza, Smith opened with their smash hit “Unholy,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2022. Donning an extravagant fluffy pink dress, Smith belted out the opening lines of the song before sneaking in Kim Petras, who is featured on the track, to assist with her verse.
Petras wasn’t the only unexpected guest during Smith’s SNL appearance. For their second performance, the singer surprised with a guest appearance from Oscar-nominated actress Sharon Stone, who lounged on a gold-covered couch while Smith delivered their recently dropped single “Gloria.” Surrounded by a group of darkly robed singers, Smith — who was draped in a gold sequin blazer — beautifully crooned the track while Stone slowly rose from her reclined position and gazed off into the distance.
Gloria, the followup to 2020’s Love Goes, features the previously-released singles “Love Me More,” “Gimme” and the Petras-assisted hit “Unholy,” which is nominated for best song at the 2023 Brit Awards.
Smith’s three studio albums all crashed the top five on the Billboard 200, with 2017’s The Thrill of It All hitting No. 1.
Watch Smith’s SNL performances below. For those without cable, the broadcast will also stream on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, which you can sign up for at the link here. Having a Peacock account also gives fans on demand access to previous SNL episodes as well.
Ariana Grande is showing love to Kristin Chenoweth after the Broadway vet shared a video of herself singing a Wizard of Oz classic alongside the pop superstar.
On Friday (Jan. 20), Grande — who will portray Glinda in Jon M. Chu’s upcoming live-action film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked — posted a TikTok video of herself singing a gorgeous a cappella version of “Over the Rainbow” from the 1939 musical film. Shortly after, Chenoweth responded with a side-by-side clip of herself harmonizing the beloved tune alongside Grande.
“You know I had to duet this one,” Chenoweth, who originated the role of Glinda in the Broadway musical of Wicked in 2003, wrote in her TikTok video. “Over the [rainbow emoji] with my baby girl.”
The Broadway star added in her caption, “Just two Ozians.”
Grande quickly caught wind of Chenoweth’s flattering post and shared a heartwarming response in her Instagram Story. “oh i am crying,” the 29-year-old pop star wrote. “i love you so much @kchenoweth.”
It’s been more than a year since it was announced in November 2021 that Grande would be playing Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba in the long-awaited big-screen adaptation of the prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Chu later revealed that they’d be splitting the project into two films, the first of which is set to arrive in December 2024.
Last March, Chenoweth expressed her approval of Grande’s casting as Glinda in the Wicked movie. “I think that crown and wand are going to the exact correct person,” she said during an appearance on Today. “I think she’s gonna nail it.” Chenoweth added, “Maybe some people do know this about Ari, but she’s really, really funny. And Glinda has to do funny and drama; she has to do it all. And sing high and sing low. So, there’s the girl.”

Saturday Night Live has a jam-packed lineup this weekend, with Aubrey Plaza making her hosting debut and Sam Smith taking the stage as musical guest.
To gear up for the big night, the superstar duo joined SNL favorite Kenan Thompson for a new promo clip. “We love you in The White Lotus,” Thompson tells Plaza, before Smith chimes in, “Emily the Criminal is brilliant.”

However, Thompson then mixes up Plaza for Jenna Ortega when he says, “You were great in Wednesday.”
When the actress reveals that she wasn’t in the popular Netflix series, Thompson asks her to “at least” do the viral Wednesday-inspired dance trend. “No,” Plaza simply replies, with her characteristic deadpan tone.
Smith posted the video to Instagram, along with the caption, “Saturday [yellow heart emoji].” They will be serving as musical guest on the iconic sketch comedy show for the third time, just a week before their highly anticipated new album Gloria drops on January 27. The LP comes on the heels of the singer’s Hot 100 chart topping collaboration with Kim Petras, “Unholy.”
Saturday Night Live airs every Saturday live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT. For those without cable, the broadcast will also stream on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, which you can sign up for at the link here. Rankings for the Top TV Songs chart are based on song and show data provided by Tunefind and ranked using a formula blending that data with sales and streaming information tracked by Luminate during the corresponding period of December 2022.
Lainey Wilson’s “Watermelon Moonshine,” heard in the Dec. 11 episode of the Paramount show, leads at No. 1. It scored 4.9 million official U.S. streams and 10,000 downloads in December 2022, according to Luminate.
As a result of its Yellowstone synch, the song, originally released Aug. 12, 2022, reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart, as well as No. 15 on the all-format Digital Song Sales ranking.
Wilson, who also acts on the show, performed the song as her character in the episode.
Other Yellowstone appearances on the chart include a pair of Zach Bryan songs (“Motorcycle Drive By,” No. 4 — 3.9 million streams, 6,000 downloads; “Summertime Blues,” No. 7 – 3.7 million streams, 2,000 downloads) and one from Flatland Cavalry (“Mountain Song, No. 8 – 2 million streams, 2,000 downloads). Bryan performed both songs on the Dec. 18 episode.
The top non-Yellowstone title, meanwhile, belongs to Mitski, whose “Washing Machine Heart” bows at No. 2 after a Dec. 2 synch in Mythic Quest. In December 2022, the song earned 13.1 million streams.

The mysterious state of Austin Butler‘s voice has been the source of much online speculation lately, and now Vanessa Hudgens is chiming in on the topic.
It all started when an Instagram user named Ryan Scott reposted a Page Six interview with the Elvis star’s voice coach on Thursday (Jan. 19), claiming the deep, gravelly twang the actor has adopted since filming the biopic is “genuine” and may just well be permanent. “He went to the Lady Gaga school of Oscar campaign acting,” Scott quipped.
Hudgens, who dated Butler for nearly a decade from 2011 to 2020, not only noticed the post, but reacted. “Crying,” the High School Musical alum wrote succinctly in the comments section.
Needless to say, fans and followers have pinpointed a noticeable change in Butler’s voice since he wrapped the Baz Luhrmann-helmed film, even digging up old clips from red carpets and other interviews to dissect the differences.
However, Butler’s transformation into Elvis Presley has earned him a flood of critical acclaim and awards show accolades. So far, the actor has raked in the Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a drama film, as well as nominations for BAFTAs and SAG Awards.
He also addressed the chatter around his voice in the Globes press room after his win, telling the assembled press, “I don’t think I sound like him still. But I guess I must because I hear it a lot. I often liken it to when somebody lives in another country for a long time. I had three years where that was my only focus in life, so I’m sure there’s just pieces of my DNA that will always be linked to him.”

Ariana Grande had a wicked good response to criticism she’s been receiving in the past few months. Since being cast in Jon M. Chu’s upcoming live-action film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, the 29-year-old pop star has been open about wanting to dedicate her time to portraying Glinda the Good Witch — something that’s upset some fans who’ve been waiting since 2020’s Positions for new music from her.

Some have even complained that Grande is no longer a singer now that she’s been shooting the films (while still focusing on rolling out products for her R.E.M. beauty company). But in a Friday (Jan. 20) TikTok, the “Thank U, Next” musician proved that this definitely isn’t the case.
Swaddled in a chunky knit, hooded sweater — baby pink, Glinda’s signature color — Grande sang a gorgeous, a capella cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz with a tone and vibrato that Judy Garland herself would have been proud of.
“Wanted to sing you a little something but don’t want to sing anything that is not ‘Ozian’ at the moment :)” she captioned the video. “Keeping to my little bubble for now … done with lots of love.”
The TikTok also included text callouts quoting the “why aren’t you a singer anymore?” comment, to which she responded by writing: “*is literally on set filming two musical movies all day every day*”
And if you’re wondering, there’s a reason she chose a hooded garment for the video. Though she’s already publicly debuted the blonde ‘do she got for Wicked, Grande wrote that she wanted to keep Glinda’s hairstyle concealed while filming the TikTok, shot in the middle of getting ready for her day on set.
It’s been more than a year since it was announced in November 2021 that Grande would be playing Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, in the highly anticipated Wicked adaptation. The following April, Chu revealed that they’d be splitting the project into two films, the first of which is set to arrive in December 2024.
In May, Grande broke the news to fans that she was’t working on a new album and didn’t have plans to anytime soon, instead wanting to focus her energies on Wicked. “That is going to have every piece of me, every minute, every ounce of my heart, my time, my soul, my everything that I can give it,” she said at the time. “My hands are quite full with a lot of other ‘thrillifying’ work at the moment. I am spending all of my time with Glinda.”

Throughout the storied history of RuPaul’s Drag Race, many mini and maxi challenges have come and gone. Between queens making puppets and variety/talent shows, there are few challenges that have remained essentially the same since their inception … except for the Snatch Game.
Since its debut back in season 2, Snatch Game — Drag Race‘s celebrity impersonation challenge lampooning the classic game show Match Game — has become one of the most beloved challenges on the show. Usually seen as a turning point in the competition, Snatch Game is one of the few challenges every queen can expect to see in their time on the show.
Now, only four episodes into its run, season 15 is launching its 14 remaining contestants into the iconic competition. On Friday’s new episode (Jan. 20), the queens will be split into two groups to face-off with their celebrity impressions, all aiming for the same goal — to make RuPaul laugh.
Along with being one of Drag Race’s most iconic challenges, Snatch Game is also one of the most difficult. Speaking to Billboard, two-time Snatch Game winner Jinkx Monsoon explained that the challenge is more than meets the eye. “Snatch Game is very hard,” she said. “It feels like it’s a test of your impersonation skills, but it’s simultaneously a test of your comedic skills and improv skills.”
With the challenge’s history of providing plenty of hilarious (and cringe-worthy) portrayals of iconic musical artists, Billboard decided to look back on every Snatch Game in the show’s herstory and rank each musical impersonation. From the Great Beyoncé Curse to spot-on performances as Adele, Cher and Britney Spears, check out all of our findings below.
Leslie Jordan, the actor whose wry Southern drawl and versatility made him a standout on TV series including Will & Grace and American Horror Story, died from natural causes and not from a car accident last year, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has concluded.

The 67-year-old actor died of sudden cardiac dysfunction due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a report by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Arteriosclerosis is hardening of the arteries that can restrict blood flow. Jordan died at the scene after his car crashed in the Hollywood area Oct. 24. An autopsy didn’t find any signs of life-threatening trauma, according to the coroner’s report, which listed the cause of death as natural.
Jordan had been sober for more than two decades at the time of his death, and toxicology tests didn’t find any alcohol or drugs in his body. TMZ reported that the coroner found that Jordan — who was taking heart medication at the time of his death — had major cardiovascular issues, with one of his arteries 80% blocked and another 50% blocked.
The 4-foot-11 Tennessee native was known for both comic and dramatic roles. He won an outstanding guest actor Emmy in 2005 for his part as Beverly Leslie in Will & Grace, had a recurring role on the Mayim Bialik comedy Call Me Kat and starred on the sitcom The Cool Kids. Jordan’s other eclectic credits include Hearts Afire, Boston Legal, Fantasy Island and The United States vs. Billie Holiday. He played various roles on the American Horror Story series.
Golden Globe winner Jennifer Coolidge made her TikTok debut on Thursday (Jan. 19) with a little help from her Shotgun Wedding co-star. “Hi, this is my first TikTok and I was trying to think of something cool to do and I think I’m just going to do a poem that I like,” said Coolidge, decked out in a glittery black dress for the occasion.
The dramatic reading of the cultural touchstone began, “Don’t be fooled… by the rocks that I got,” White Lotus star Coolidge intoned with the gravitas of a Shakespearean actress. “I’m still Jenny… Jenny… Jenny from the block,” she added, before tilting the camera to her right to reveal JLo herself.
Yes, Shotgun star Jennifer Lopez was in the room, rocking a serious look and then offering a soft, “I like that” to her friend and co-star, who plays the singer/actresses’ future mother-in-law in the rom-com that also stars Josh Duhamel and Cheech Marin. “I really, really like that.”
On Wednesday night, Lopez appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to plug the movie — and talk about the PTSD she had before finally marrying longtime love Ben Affleck last summer — as well as how “on fire” veteran comedic actress Coolidge is right now. When Kimmel noted that Coolidge is always “odd,” “nutty” and funny in her own unique, often detached, way in everything she does, Lopez said the other Jen isn’t always what you’d think she’d be.
“You expect her, because she’s so hilarious and everything, that she’s gonna come over and she’s just gonna be funny away,” Lopez said. “But it’s kind of like how her characters are where she’s like there and you’re like, ‘Is she trying to be funny or is she not being funny?’ And you don’t know if to laugh or not to laugh and then when you see it later it’s hilarious! And you’re like, ‘I should have laughed!’”
In perhaps the greatest compliment she could give, JLo compared Coolidge to the late great boundary-blasting comedian Andy Kaufman, who lived to blend the barrier between life and comedy. “It’s brilliant, she’s brilliant,” Lopez said.
