Netflix are reportedly moving ahead with their Building the Band reality series following the recent passing of judge Liam Payne.
News of Building the Band first broke in August 2024, with Netflix revealing they had recruited Payne as a judge for the show alongside the Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger and Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland. The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean was also confirmed to host.

Planned to film over the summer, the series’ novel concept revolves around bringing together a number of talented singers and tasking them with crafting their own bands without ever seeing each other. Through the use of isolated booths, the singers would then have to select their bandmates based upon musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit.

“And when the bands finally do meet, how will looks, choreography, and style come into play?” asked a press release. “Expect plenty of drama, next-level artistry, and unforgettable performances.”

Following the untimely passing of Payne in October 2024, it was confirmed the series’ filming had wrapped in the U.K. earlier in August, though its future appeared unclear.

Now, Netflix have reported they will be moving ahead with the series as planned, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Though the streaming platform stated they never had announced plans to shelve the show, their issue instead revolved around how prominently Payne would feature in the aftermath of his passing.

Netflix reportedly hosted a “special presentation” regarding the series in Los Angeles on Wednesday (Jan. 29), during which Netflix Vice President of Nonfiction Series and Sports Brandon Riegg explained that the platform had been involved in conversations with Payne’s family about how to handle his role in the show.

Currently, no premiere date for the series has been announced, though Riegg reportedly claimed there would be more to say about the matter in the future.

Payne passed away in Argentina on Oct. 16 following a fall from a hotel balcony. Earlier this month, a U.K. inquest into Payne’s cause of death returned a finding of “polytrauma”, which refers to multiple traumatic injuries to a person’s body and organs.

To date, five people have been charged in Payne’s death, including the January arrest of Braian Piaz, one of two men accused of supplying drugs to the singer. The others charged to date include CasaSur Palermo Hotel manager Gilda Martin, receptionist Esteban Grassi and Payne’s friend Roger Nores, all of whom are facing manslaughter charges; hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra has also been charged with supplying drugs to the singer.

The film will feature conversations with, in addition to those named above, Bruckheimer, Sir Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and Tanya Lapointe.

“The Hans Zimmer Live tour has been one of the most exciting experiences of my career,” Zimmer said in a statement. “Seeing these compositions transform from their big-screen origins to the live show then back to the big screen is a delightful full-circle moment. I hope audiences enjoy this peek behind the curtain as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert will be released in select theaters across the Americas, Europe, Asia and United Arab Emirates, with limited screenings beginning Wednesday, March 19. Theaters in Australasia and other countries in the Middle East will screen the film at a later date. Tickets are on sale from Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 9 a.m. ET on the film’s website.

Zimmer, 67, has won four Grammys and two Oscars. He has received 12 Oscar nominations in scoring categories, across five decades, from the 1980s to the 2020s, winning for The Lion King and Dune.

Eilish paid tribute to Zimmer when she and Finneas won an Oscar for best original song for “No Time to Die” from the film of the same name, which Zimmer scored, calling him “so amazing.” Elton John and Tim Rice also paid tribute to Zimmer when they won Oscars for best original song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King. “To Hans Zimmer, who did a wonderful job with the songs,” John said.

Dugdale has won two Primetime Emmys — outstanding directing for a variety special for Adele: One Night Only (CBS) and outstanding variety special (live) as a co-executive producer of Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium (Disney+). He was also nominated for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) as executive producer of Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden (CBS).

Dugdale has also received three Grammy nods for best music film for Coldplay’s Live 2012 and Ghost Stories and Adele: One Night Only.

The film, which runs more than 2-1/2 hours, was produced by Simon Fisher, Steven Kofsky, Michael Marto, Omar Saab and John Featherstone. Executive producers are Bruckheimer, Dugdale, Steven Kofsky, Michael Marto, and Omar Saab. Michaels’ claims emerged in the new three-hour documentary Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music, which premiered on NBC on Monday (Jan. 27). Alongside notable revelations in regards to the show’s musical history (including the fact that no one seems to know the melody to the SNL theme song), Michaels pushed back at long-standing reports that numerous artists have been banned from the show for various reasons.

“I’ll read it sometimes in the Post, ‘So and so’s banned for life,’” Michaels explained. “We’ve never banned anyone. We’re way too crass and opportunistic. If something’s hot, we’re going to go for it and have it on.”

Though it’s not exactly clear where the reports that artists have been banned from SNL have emerged from over the years, a number of controversial appearances make it easy to see why bans would be expected.

One of the earliest incidents of an apparently banned performer came from a December 1977 episode in which Elvis Costello stepped in for the Sex Pistols. Despite planning to perform “Less Than Zero”, Costello switched up his set at the last moment and instead performed “Radio Radio” – a track that was critical of commercial radio in his native U.K. Undeterred by the negative reaction his appearance generated from the show’s staff, Costello later returned to the show in 1989, 1991, and again in 1999 where he parodied his first performance alongside the Beastie Boys.

Among the most notable examples of controversial musical guests was that of Sinéad O’Connor, who tore up an image of Pope John Paul II during an a cappella performance of Bob Marley’s “War” in 1992. Protesting sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church, O’Connor’s urging for viewers to “fight the real enemy” became one of the most infamous moments on the show’s history.

Other instances also include Los Angeles punk outfit Fear appearing on the show at the insistence of John Belushi in 1981, with their rowdy set reportedly causing $500,000 in damage. A 2004 performance from Ashlee Simpson also gained international notoriety after she was revealed to be lip-syncing due to illness, though she would later return the following year without incident.

The nascent documentary also featured further information about Rage Against the Machine’s 1996 performance, in which they appeared alongside then-presidential candidate Steve Forbes.

Following a version of “Bulls on Parade” (which was planned to feature upside-down American flags hung from their amps until stagehands intervened), bassist Tim Commerford vented his frustration by throwing one of the flags into Forbes’ empty dressing room. The incident caused the Secret Service to respond on behalf of the billionaire, locking the band down in their dressing room until the completion of the show.

The 50 Years of SNL Music documentary – which is co-directed by Oscar-winning Roots drummer Questlove – is part of SNL’s 50th anniversary programming, and arrived following the premiere of SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night on Jan. 16.
