If anyone is on the good side of the “Karma Police,” it’s Nini Iris. On the Tuesday (Nov. 7) episode of The Voice, the Team Niall contestant delivered a show-stopping rendition of Radiohead’s 1997 classic to clinch the victory in The Knockouts round. Going into the episode, Iris was on a hot streak. After securing […]

Her name is Regina George, and she is a massive deal. Renee Rapp shines as the leader of “The Plastics” in the official trailer for Mean Girls, the upcoming adaptation of the Broadway musical, which itself was an adaptation of the original 2004 Tina Fey film. And guess which 20-year-old pop princess’ music is featured? […]

Given that Britney Spears is one of the most important music video artists in contemporary pop music, it’s no surprise that the “Till the World Ends” singer served as the chief inspiration for Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov’s performance on Dancing With the Stars‘ Music Video Night on Tuesday (Nov. 7). Donning a costume fashioned […]

Maren Morris is one of a lucky few who gets to call her hero a friend. While on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday (Nov. 7), the vocalist opened up about her relationship with Taylor Swift five months after she and the “Anti-Hero” pop star performed their Fearless (Taylor’s Version) collaboration “You All Over Me” together at the Eras Tour.
“We’re the same age, but looking up to her since I was a teenager, and watching her navigate her country music to pop career so gracefully, and the way she treats her fans is so kind and generous,” Morris gushed. “She’s setting a high bar.”

The 33-year-old singer-songwriter also recalled meeting Swift in 2018 on the Reputation Tour. “She was kind enough to ask me to come out and sing my song ‘The Middle’ with her,” Morris shared. “She’s just been so supportive of me and my career over the years.”

Following somewhat in Swift’s footsteps, Morris recently announced that she’s planning to leave country music behind. Her genre hop, however, isn’t just about changing up her sound. As she explained to Fallon, “There were just some facets of [country] that I didn’t really jive with anymore.”

In October, Morris revealed she will no longer submit her music for country awards consideration and transferred from her label in Nashville to the New York-based Columbia Records. “I really cannot participate in the really toxic arms of this institution anymore,” she shared in an October interview on the New York Times’ Popcast, noting her disappointment with the country industry’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and social issues such as the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I couldn’t do this circus anymore of feeling like I have to absorb and explain people’s bad behaviors and laugh it off,” she added. “I just couldn’t do that after 2020. … I’ve changed.”

As part of her departure, Morris released two-track EP The Bridge in September, produced by Swift’s own frequent collaborator, Jack Antonoff. The Grammy winner performed one of the project’s songs, “The Tree,” alongside guests Mickey Guyton and Brittney Spencer for Fallon’s audience on The Tonight Show.

For John Legend, highlighting music in high school education is a no brainer.
“I think during this era, particularly within the last 20 years when testing and test scores have been so important for so many schools — I understand that, but I think what people don’t realize is that when you take the arts away, it takes away an important aspect of education,” the EGOT member tells Billboard. “It takes some of the humanity out of education.”

That’s why he was particularly moved by the student at Hill-Freedman World Academy in Philadelphia, who take part in a unique songwriting collaboration as part of their curriculum. For the assignment, the 10th graders work with local musicians to create a complete album of powerful original songs that capture both the challenging times they’re living in and the joy that music brings. Joining the Hill-Freedman World Academy High School students in their creative pursuit are award-winning musical talents Kristal Oliver, Andrew Lipke and Bethlehem Roberson, along with program director and music technology teacher Ezechial Thurman.

Inspired by their story, Legend teamed up with his longtime friend and producing partner Mike Jackson and his old college a capella groupmate Ty Stiklorius to executive produce Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School as part of their production company, Get Lifted Co. The Amy Schatz-directed documentary explores the creative process of the songwriting collaboration at Hill-Freedman World Academy and how healing music can be for any generation.

Telling a Philadelphia-centric story was also important to the trio, as Jackson and Stiklorius both grew up in the City of Brotherly Love, and Jackson hails Legend as one of the city’s “adopted sons,” despite being an Ohio native. “When you meet people from Philadelphia, we do have a sense of pride of where we’re from, the history of our city being the first capital of this country and the music with The Roots and Jill Scott, Gamble and Huff — there’s just such a rich tradition within the confines of the city of Philadelphia artistically,” Jackson adds. “So, for folks like myself and Ty and John, who make a living in the arts, we find it really encouraging to see Philadelphia continue to build and grow and nurture young artists.”

Stiklorius chimes in, “My love for the arts was nurtured in Philadelphia’s embrace, and I carry that love in everything I do, channeling it into fostering new talent and stories that resonate with the heartbeat of my hometown.”

What stood out most to the trio throughout the process of the film is how connected the students were, despite having just returned to school from the isolation of quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m an old dude,” Jackson jokes. “I know how [COVID-19] affected my friends, my peer group, people’s families and jobs and the stresses of that, but I was disconnected from teenagers.”

He continues, “To see how the pandemic affected them and how resilient they were coming out of it and how committed they were to one another, and how they allow themselves to be vulnerable in this process — to me, it was a surprise, but an exciting one because they really came together like a fellowship of young minds and creativity working together for a common goal. That was a big, happy surprise for me.”

Stiklorius agrees. “Their seamless fusion of technological prowess with a deep commitment to social issues was inspiring,” she says. “Their digital nativity did not come at the cost of disconnecting from the tangible world; rather, it empowered their creativity and informed their activism. This blend of vulnerability and innovation with a conscience was not just surprising but also a beacon of hope for the future of the arts and activism.”

“I love that we captured that on film,” Legend adds. “Some of these kids weren’t going into this as musicians. This is a required class for that school, but everybody has a story. You see in this film how important it is for people to tap into their story and be able to talk about it and create based on it, and how important it is for people to work together on a group project, to collaborate on something and have a goal that they’re working toward. It’s also showing how important it is for people to come out of their shell in ways that they may not be able to in other academic settings.”

With that sense of creativity, collaboration and emotional vulnerability growing throughout the film, Legend, Stiklorius and Jackson hope that Stand Up & Shout will open up viewer’s eyes to the importance of arts in education. “You see all these moments when music and arts do something that math and science can’t do to bring out a student’s personality, their leadership ability, their connection to other human beings,” Legend shared. “All these things are uniquely addressed by music education and by arts education. I’m so glad that this school invested in that. It just makes it clear that every school should invest in that, no matter if they’re a school focused on STEM. Bring back that A and make it STEAM!”

“I also just wish I could have made an album in high school,” Legend adds with a laugh. “I would have loved that.”

Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School will air on Tuesday (Nov. 7) at 9 p.m. ET. on HBO. The film will also be available to stream on Max.

Over the past three seasons the men of Please Don’t Destroy have capably picked up the digital short mantle left to them by the previous Saturday Night Live viral video trio The Lonely Island. That includes roping major stars into appearing in their bits, including 2021’s hilarious “Three Sad Virgins” sketch featuring then cast member Pete Davidson and that night’s musical guest, Taylor Swift.

On Monday night (Nov. 6) the three — John Higgins, Martin Herlihy and Ben Marshall — visited The Tonight Show to talk about their breakout success on SNL, and, of course, reveal how they got the biggest pop star in the world to do a hilarious pop-in for their video. “We didn’t think that she would do it,” said Higgins, son of SNL writer/producer and Tonight Show announcer/sidekick Steve Higgins.

“[SNL writer] Dan Bulla, who wrote it with us, said, ‘We should have Taylor Swift do it’… and we were like, ‘yeah, obviously!’” So, they pitched it to her — including mentioning the name of the bit and how it would consist of her and Davidson roasting them — and she was immediately like, “‘Yes!’ and was like, ‘I get that about you guys,’” Higgins lamented.

In fact, Marshall said, Swift actually pitched even more jokes making fun of them and now, Higgins admitted, every time they walk down the street people yell out, “‘Hey, sad virgin!’” Which is a bummer, he said, because it’s not even true. “We’re not sad.”

In case you missed the original, in it Davidson pitches the trio on doing a video in which they are all pals who hang out. He then slow raps about his crazy tabloid fame and the cool and famous friends he has… except for those “three sad virgins.” The guys stop the shoot to ask if the parody song is actually about them, and after assuring them it’s just a joke, Davidson raps their names and some unflattering characteristics (not smart, breath smells like a fart) to their mortification.

After they ask for some changes, Davidson continues the humiliation, only agreeing to stop after they hit the song’s bridge. Cue Swift, who comes in to croon more cruel, but accurate, insults, including “Ben is like a sad Ron Weasley/ He looks like if Big Bird lost all his feathers/ And Martin has the charm and the sex appeal of a scarecrow/ John has a big-ass bowling ball head/ How does he stay upright with that big, fat melon?”

Swift is the leading finalist with nods in 20 categories at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards. You can watch the BBMAs here, and via Billboard and the BBMA’s social media channels on Nov. 19.
