Lil Nas X’s ‘Long Live Montero’ Concert Documentary Is Heading to HBO & Max

Lil Nas X fans now have the chance to relive his Long Live Montero tour. The trek’s accompanying documentary, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, is heading to HBO and Max, the network announced Thursday (Jan. 4). The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.

The concert documentary, a diaristic look at the rapper’s life over 60 days in 2022-2023 amid his most recent global tour, will make its debut on HBO on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET; the film is also set to stream on Max. Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero first made its debut last year at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sept. 9, with two public screenings that later followed at TIFF on Sept. 14 and Sept. 16.

In an August press release regarding the documentary’s premiere at TIFF, Cameron Bailey, CEO, TIFF described Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero as “a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity.” She continued, “In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music.”

The HBO and Max debut of Lil Nas’ documentary will arrive on the heels of his new era, which is set to kick off next week with a new song. He has not yet revealed the title for the upcoming track — or its respective album — but the rapper told fans on Jan. 3 that he’s gearing up to have “the greatest comeback of all time.”

Brad Falchuk Says He Would ‘Never Say No’ to a ‘Glee’ Reboot

With all the talk of remakes in Hollywood, is there a chance of a Glee reboot happening? According to one of the show’s creators, Brad Falchuk, it is a possibility. Falchuk sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for a feature published on Wednesday (Jan. 3), and spoke about what it was like to experience such quick success with Glee, as well as the probably of a reboot coming to fruition.

“None of us were prepared for that level of success. I was younger, it was a little overwhelming, and a lot of us got caught up in our egos. There was a feeling of scarcity,” he explained. “We were writing about high school, so it’s very hard not to regress a little. It was a crucible.”

Working on the show, however, provided Falchuk and his fellow co-writers, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, a wealth of positive memories. “At the same time, we had so much fun and everyone got along so well. Things went to hell, and then everyone got along again,” he added. “It was chaotic. I’d never want to go back there, and then I’ll think, “Gosh, I’d love to go back there.” But the biggest learning from that show? Taking the ego out of everything and being an adult.”

With reboots being all the rage at the moment — see: the upcoming Mean Girls movie musical, The Little Mermaid remake, and more — Falchuk said he wouldn’t be opposed to hopping aboard a Glee revamp. “I’m sure everything is always on the table,” he said, but with a catch: “Is there a way to tell that story in a more modern way? So much of what Glee was about was really this transition from an old way of looking at representation to a new way. I’d never say no, but I wonder what the point would be — except it’d be a moneymaker.”

Glee made its impact on television, but also on the Billboard charts, netting 207 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 across its six seasons. The show’s highest charting single, a 2009 cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Beliving” hit No. 4 on the all genre tally.

Pete Davidson Gets a New Netflix Special: Watch the ‘Turbo Fonzarelli’ Trailer

Missed out on a chance to see Pete Davidson live and in person? You’re in luck, as the Saturday Night Live alum’s latest comedy special, Turbo Fonzarelli, is set to premiere next week on Netflix. Ahead of its release, the streaming service dropped the official trailer for the special on Wednesday (Jan. 3).

The teaser, filmed in black and white, features Davidson smoking a cigarette by himself on a leather sofa before heading out on stage. A narrator’s voice comes in and says, “Coming Jan. 9th: a Netflix comedy special, Pete Davidson is Turbo Fonzarelli.”

After Davidson — who briefly dated Ariana Grande in 2018 — gets up to head on stage, leaving a cloud of smoke behind as he makes his way to the screaming fans on the other side, the narrator wonders, “What the f–k is a Turbo Fonzarelli?”

Turbo Fonzarelli marks the comedian’s second hourlong Netflix special. The first, Pete Davidson: Alive From New York, debuted on the streaming platform in 2020. According to a press release, the new standup special — which has an hour run time — will see the 30-year-old discussing “what it means to grow up and turn 30, discussing love, life, and living in the woods.”

Davidson is wrapping up a series of tour dates this week, and will be making stops in Wisconsin, Connecticut and Massachusetts before concluding the trek at The Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading, Penn.

‘Mean Girls’ Movie Musical Releases Fierce Final Trailer

Are you ready for it? The final trailer for the upcoming musical movie adaptation of Mean Girls dropped Wednesday morning (Jan. 3) and it hints at some big, bold song and dance numbers. The clip opens with perpetually clueless principal Duvall (Tim Meadows) welcoming curve-busting new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) to school.

Cue an ominous image of The Plastics leader Regina George (Reneé Rapp), whose entrance finds her standing with arms crossed, backlit by a blood red light in the middle of the school hallway as the singer who starred in the Broadway musical version of the high school drama — based on the 2004 film of the same name — intones “my name is Regina George.”

A quick-cut montage takes us from a boy drumming on the lockers to George inviting “loser” Heron into her car as a fellow student warns, “Regina George is a scum-sucking life burner.” We get a glimpse of thoroughly unqualified health teacher Coach Carr (Jon Hamm) giving the kids a lesson on the dangers of female “whoremones” to Ms. Nordbury’s (Tina Fey) horror and a brief glimpse of an uptempo dance break.

The second half of the trailer is cued to Megan Thee Stallion and Rapp’s “Not My Fault,” and Duvall reading from the series’ infamous “burn book,” which reveals that one of his students keeps her secret vodka stash inside her inhaler. Plus, we get several cringe shots of Mrs. George (Busy Philipps) just trying so hard to be a cool mom.

Mean Girls hits theaters on Jan. 12 with a cast that also includes Bebe Wood and Avantika as the other Plastics and The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Chris Briney as Regina’s ex, Aaron Samuels, with Heron’s pals Janis and Damian played, respectively, by Auliʻi Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey.

‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2024’ Ratings Jump

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2024, a marathon, 5-1/2 hour production which eased ABC TV viewers into the new year, saw ratings increases in all four time quadrants measured, from the start of prime-time until late-late hours.

The show, which Dick Clark originated in 1972, has ballooned over the years in hours of programming, just as the title of the show has expanded. Clark’s name remains in the title nearly a dozen years after his death, a unique and rare show of respect from a network for a long-time network star.

Ryan Seacrest, 49, is six years older than Clark was when the show launched. Seacrest shared hosting duties this year with Rita Ora and Jeannie Mai.

Performers on this year’s show included Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Sabrina Carpenter, LL Cool J, Tyla, Ellie Goulding, Green Day, Janelle Monáe, Ludacris, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Paul Russell, Reneé Rapp with Coco Jones and Thirty Seconds to Mars.

First Primetime Segment

Airing at 8:00 p.m., the first primetime segment skyrocketed over last year’s broadcast by 35% in total viewers (7.0 million vs. 5.2 million) and by 33% among adults 18-49 (1.81 rating vs. 1.36 rating) to score three-year highs.

Second Primetime Segment

Airing at 10:30 p.m., the second primetime segment jumped over the prior year by 30% in total viewers (10.4 million vs. 8.0 million) and by 32% among adults 18-49 (2.93 rating vs. 2.22 rating) to hit three-year highs.

The Part 2 segment ranked as the highest-rated entertainment telecast on any network in primetime in nine months among adults 18-49 – since ABC’s broadcast of The Oscars on March 12, 2023.

Part 2 was the night’s No. 1 entertainment program in primetime in both total viewers and adults 18-49.

The two primetime segments made the programthe night’s No. 1 most social program across all of TV. It was also the No. 1 driver of social video consumption on the night. In addition, this year’s broadcast grew its video views count by 20% over last year.

First Late-Night Segment

Airing at 11:30 p.m., the first late-night segment attracted 18.0 million total viewers and averaged a 5.33 rating among adults 18-49. The special drew in 22.2 million total viewers and hit a 6.41 adult 18-49 rating in the midnight quarter-hour.

Part 1 of the late-night segment stood as the highest-rated entertainment special on any network in two years – since ABC’s 2021 broadcast of the same show.

Part 1 shot up over the prior year’s broadcast by 30% in total viewers (18.0 million vs. 13.8 million) and by 30% among adults 18-49 (5.33 rating vs. 4.11 rating).

Part 1 ranked as the No. 1 program on New Year’s Eve among adults 18-49.

Second Late-Night Segment

Airing at 1:09 a.m., the second late-night segment grew over last year’s broadcast by 19% in total viewers (5.1 million vs. 4.3 million) and by 14% among adults 18-49 (1.47 rating vs. 1.29 rating).

Jack Black to Star Alongside Jason Momoa in ‘Minecraft’ Movie

Jack Black is adding yet another video game-to-movie adaptation to his belt. On Tuesday (Jan. 2), Deadline reported that the actor will be starring in Minecraft — based on the the popular block building adventure game by Mojang Studios, and distributed by Microsoft — alongside Aquaman star, Jason Momoa.

Black’s role in the movie, as well as the plot and its writing credits, are currently being kept under wraps, but according to the outlet, he will be taking on the role of Steve in the movie. Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen will also star in the upcoming film.

Black’s forthcoming role marks one of his many forays into the world of video games. Most recently, Black took on the role of the spiky-shelled super villain Bowser in The Super Mario Bros Movie. The film, which grossed over $1.36 billion in worldwide box office, saw Black gain traction online thanks to the film’s love song, “Peaches,” in wish he passionately pined for the affections of Princess Peach. The track also earned the 54-year-old his first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 83 on the all genre tally.

The School of Rock actor will also be starring in Borderlands — based on the first person looter and shooter video game of the same name — set to arrive this year on Aug. 9. The late 2010s saw Black have leading in roles in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is finally telling her side of the story in a new docuseries titled The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard that’s coming to Lifetime Friday (Jan. 5). Multiple TV series and documentaries have attempted to tell the true-crime story that landed Blanchard in prison, including the Hulu drama series The Act, but now the 32-year-old is opening up through a three-part docuseries.

“After a lifetime of silence, I finally get to use my voice to share my story and speak my truth,” said Blanchard in a press release. “As a survivor of relentless child abuse, this docuseries chronicles my quest for liberation and journey through self-discovery. I am unapologetically myself and unafraid to expose the hidden parts of my life that have never been revealed until now.”

Blanchard was released from prison on Dec. 28 after being convicted for her role in the murder of her mother, “Dee Dee” Blanchard, back in 2015 with her then boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn. Now, she’s finally free from prison, and with her freedom comes the premiere of her side of the story. Within each two-hour episode, which airs Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 5-7) at 8 p.m. ET/PT, viewers will see Blanchard recount her story through phone and in-person interviews from prison leading up to her parole hearing.

Ana Ofelia Murguía, Voice of Mama Coco in ‘Coco,’ Dies at 90

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican actor Ana Ofelia Murguía, who gave voice to the character of “Mama Coco” in the popular Pixar film Coco, has died, Mexican officials said. She was 90.

Mexico’s National Fine Arts Institute announced Murguía’s death Sunday without providing a cause of death.

“She leaves an enormous void on our country’s sets,” Culture Secretary Alejandra Frausto Guerrero said in a statement.

Coco, which was released in 2017, brought Murguía to an international audience late in life.

But the actor had a long acting career in Mexican film and television, and on the stage. She appeared in some 70 plays and 90 movies, including Life Sentence (1979) and The Queen of the Night (1994).

In the animated Coco, she voiced the soft-spoken great-grandmother of a boy discovering his family’s musical history.

In April, the National Autonomous University of Mexico awarded Murguía its Ingmar Bergman Medal for leaving “an indelible mark” on Mexican film and theater.

In her acceptance speech, Murguía displayed her typical humility, asking “Why me?” She said she was exhausted by all of the recognition and plaudits.

“This career has been my life,” Murguía said. “It has been the passion of my life. I’ve loved it.”

Snoop Dogg to Report on 2024 Olympics for NBC Primetime Show: ‘I Will Be Bringing That Snoop Style’

Snoop Dogg is trading in the LBC for Paris in 2024 … briefly, anyway. NBCUniversal has announced that the iconic rapper is joining its team to report on the Olympic Games this summer, and will be onsite to deliver “regular reports” on the Olympic Primetime Show beginning July 26. The announcement arrived during the New Year’s Eve Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings game.

“I grew up watching the Olympics and am thrilled to see the incredible athletes bring their A-game to Paris. It’s a celebration of skill, dedication, and the pursuit of greatness,” Snoop said in a statement. “We’re going to have some amazing competitions and, of course, I will be bringing that Snoop style to the mix. It’s going to be the most epic Olympics ever, so stay tuned, and keep it locked. Let’s elevate, celebrate, and make these games unforgettable, smoke the competition, and may the best shine like gold. Peace and Olympic LOVE, ya dig?”

The “Gin and Juice” rapper — who previously reported for NBC during the Tokyo Olympics four years ago — also shared a brief video teaser of him dancing in front of the Eiffel Tower. “New year mood. Paris 2024 Olympics. C u this summer ??✌?Official. ?? ? ? ?‍♀️,” he captioned his Instagram clip.

According to NBC, Snoop will be chatting about the Paris Games with NBC Olympics host Mike Tirico, offering up “his unique take on what’s happening in Paris.” He’ll also be checking out the landmarks, visiting with athletes and their friends and family, and of course, attending some of the competitions.

“Snoop is already an Olympic gold medal commentator, generating tens of millions of views for his highlights commentary on Peacock of the dressage competition during the Tokyo Olympics,” Molly Solomon — executive producer and president, NBC Olympics Production — said in a statement. “That performance alone has earned Snoop a job as our Special Correspondent in Paris. We don’t know what the heck is going to happen every day, but we know he will add his unique perspective to our re-imagined Olympic primetime show.”

The Paris Games are set to take place July 26 through Aug. 11. NBC and its streaming service, Peacock, will be providing coverage of the Olympics.
