As the Grand Ole Opry celebrates its centennial anniversary in 2025, the revered country music institution will highlight its 100-year history, as well as its present and future, on Wednesday (March 19) when Opry 100: A Live Celebration airs live on NBC and simulcasts on Peacock. The event will be hosted by 29-time Billboard Country Airplay chart-topper and Opry member Blake Shelton, who was inducted in 2010.
Ahead of the special, Billboard is exclusively premiering a first-look video with artists including Brad Paisley (inducted in 2001), Keith Urban (2012), Luke Combs and Kelsea Ballerini (both in 2019) wishing the Nashville staple a happy birthday and discussing the institution’s enduring impact on country music. The clip also features “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” hitmaker Barbara Mandrell (inducted in 1972) and “Mama Sang a Song” hitmaker Bill Anderson (inducted in 1961).
“You just walk into the Opry House and you feel the history and the richness of the stories and the people that have made country music what it is,” five-time Country Airplay chart-topper Ballerini says in the video.
Trending on Billboard
Elsewhere, the artists also displayed the close-knit camaraderie the Opry is known for, as they offered up good-natured jokes. “I think it’s great that Blake’s going to host the show,” Anderson says in the video, before adding with a chuckle: “And I look forward to just watching him sweat.”
Other artists who have notched enduring country hits spanning decades will also be included in the special, which will highlight nearly 50 official Grand Ole Opry members over the course of the three-hour show. Opry 100: A Live Celebration will also feature appearances from Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Ashley McBryde, Carly Pearce, Carrie Underwood, Clint Black, Dierks Bentley, Garth Brooks, Jamey Johnson, Lady A, Lainey Wilson, Marty Stuart, Reba McEntire, Ricky Skaggs, Steven Curtis Chapman, Terri Clark, Trace Adkins, Travis Tritt, Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill, Randy Travis and more. Other fan favorites — including Aloe Blacc with the McCrary Sisters, Amy Grant, Eric Church, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, The War And Treaty and Yolanda Adams — will also make appearances.
The upcoming special spotlights how the Grand Ole Opry, radio’s longest-running show and broadcast on WSM-AM, has evolved to become a multimedia, global juggernaut through the decades, reaching fans through not only radio, but television, social media and digital streaming platforms. Since launching in 1925, the Grand Ole Opry has called several Nashville buildings home, among them the Ryman Auditorium (from 1943-1974), and has called the Grand Ole Opry House home since 1974. The special will feature artist performances from both iconic venues.
“NBC is proud to continue expanding its commitment to the genre, offering both iconic performances that highlight the impact and relevance of country music,” Jen Neal, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Exec. VP, Live Events & Specials, told Billboard in a statement. “Opry 100: A Live Celebration reflects country music’s enduring influence on the American musical landscape, and NBC is honored to be a platform for its continued growth.”
Opry 100: A Live Celebration airs on NBC and will stream on Peacock on Wednesday, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The special marks NBC’s fourth live television event from Nashville in the past two years. The telecast will be executive produced by Silent House Productions’ Emmy Award winners Baz Halpin, Mark Bracco and Linda Gierahn, along with R.A. Clark and Steve Buchanan.

Six months of preparation translated into a 13-minute Super Bowl Halftime Show. The NFL took fans behind the scenes for the first time on Friday (March 14) with a look into how Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show took form.
The NFL released a 32-minute mini-documentary on YouTube showcasing how the performance went from an idea to the big stage in New Orleans as more than 133 million fans watched at home.
Bruce Rodgers served as the creative director and production designer for Kendrick’s performance; it was Rodgers’ 19th Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Trending on Billboard
“This literally will change the way you do halftime. We’ll have to have a full team building the square, same with the diamond, same with the circle,” he said of the video game-themed stage for Lamar.
PgLang creative director Mike Carson was also heavily involved with the performance, and he hopped on countless Zooms and calls with Rodgers while bouncing ideas off him about the stage, lighting and performance.
Before GNX even dropped, one of the early hurdles was finding a pristine 1987 Buick GNX for the performance, which was gutted to have 30 of the 400 dancers emerge from the car.
“The car is the icon of this era for him as far as album covers [GNX], in the video, so it was only right to have it as part of the performance,” Carson said.
Five hundred crew members were involved in the shuttling of the stage on and off the field in eight minutes. Even though the Caesars Superdome is indoors, they opened the vents due to the use of pyrotechnics and had to take measures for possible inclement weather, which ended up working out.
Kendrick impressed with his heavily anticipated performance — including bringing “Not Like Us” to the global stage — which saw an assist from SZA and a Serena Williams cameo.
Lamar drew a 153% bump in streams in the week following his Super Bowl performance in New Orleans on Feb. 9, which pushed GNX back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Over a month later, Kendrick still holds three of the top five slots on the Billboard Hot 100, including his sixth No. 1 hit with “Luther.”

Fans of Sadie Sink may know her best as Max Mayfield on Netflix’s Stranger Things or as the female lead in Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film, but they will see a completely different side of her as the titular character in O’Dessa, a dystopian rock opera penned by PattiCake$ director Geremy Jasper.
The Searchlight Pictures film, which also stars Regina Hall, Murray Bartlett and Kelvin Harrison Jr., premiered at SXSW on March 8 and is available on Hulu starting Thursday (March 20).
Trending on Billboard
Jasper’s plot was ambitious in its breadth. “The original inspiration for the film was a sci-fi musical retelling of the Orpheus myth set in a world that combined the Dust Bowl of the ‘30s with a retro, futuristic, psychedelic sci-fi world,” he says.
In the featurette below, premiering exclusively on Billboard, Sink is a traveling troubadour in a wasteland communicating with her music, but runs afoul of a charismatic dictator, Plutonovich, played by Bartlett. Sink, Jasper and the other main actors also talk about the music in the film in the clip.
It was Sink’s performance in 2022’s The Whale that convinced Jasper to cast her. “Like the rest of the world I knew Sadie as Max, but when I saw her in The Whale, I was knocked out and convinced she could carry this film. Boy, did she,” he says.
Jasper, who has helmed such music videos as Selena Gomez & The Scene’s “Love You Like a Love Song” and Florence + the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” (2010 version) also directed the film and co-wrote the songs.
Coming from the world of music videos, Jasper says there was a learning curve when he segued into feature films. “The major skill I learned from making Patti was working with actors, which I had very little experience with,” he says. “It’s become my favorite part of the filmmaking process.”
The movie is billed as a rock opera, which Jasper defines as “the fuzzier, looser, dirtier cousin to the normal musical.” Previous rock operas through the decades left their mark on him. “My favorite is Diamond Dogs by David Bowie. He was trying to make that concept album a stage show and was obsessed with doing a film version. O’dessa is extremely influenced by it,” he says. “Also, The Wall by Pink Floyd and Jesus Christ Superstar are all-time classics.”
The cast album for O’Dessa is out now on Hollywood Records. “I couldn’t be more excited for people to hear Sadie sing these songs,” says Jasper.

Gene Simmons can rock n’ roll all night and deliver the weather forecast the next day. On Thursday (March 13), the KISS frontman hilariously took over Los Angeles meteorologist Adam Krueger’s weekend report on Fox 11 — and it was truly chaotic from start to finish.
Wearing a denim shirt, sunglasses and a black cap, Simmons began by asserting he knows “quite a lot” about weather. He also landed a backhanded compliment toward Krueger — “You look much better in real life than you do on TV” — before pointing out regions on a map of Southern California and nonchalantly reading off the weather patterns crossing through.
At one point, Simmons pushed Krueger away so as not to block the graphics behind them before reading out the warm temperatures local viewers would experience over the next few days. Krueger then went in for a play on KISS’ Billboard Hot 100 hit “Rock and Roll All Nite,” saying, “This weekend, I’m thinking, it’s looking pretty good. If people want to rock and roll all night …?”
Trending on Billboard
“They should party every day,” Simmons finished.
Another hilarious moment came when Krueger tried to signify the end of the segment by giving the rock star a fist bump, prompting Simmons to ask, “Are you kicking me out?”
“You don’t have the thing in my ear where they’re saying wrap, so I gotta wrap,” Krueger responded, leading Simmons to start freestyling some bars.
“Rap? ‘You go to 7-Eleven/ Go to heaven …,” Simmons spit, doing a little dance.
After the broadcast, Krueger shared some behind the scenes photos with the rock legend on Instagram and wrote, “Do weather with @genesimmons” along with a checkmark emoji.
Krueger is known for creating viral weather moments by incorporating popular music into his presentations. Last year, he turned heads by using lyrics from Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” while delivering a Houston forecast, telling viewers, “If you wanna pass on this heat like John Stockton, you can go into the Northwest where there’s 60s and 70s for highs today.”
“So again, we got temperatures in the 90s, but it’s going to feel hotter for several days … Wop, wop, wop, wop!” he continued at the time. “This is not a major cold front. In fact, the general rule this time of year if it’s June and we’re talking about a cold front, it’s probably a minor.”
Krueger’s has also recently paid homage to Doechii, Tyler, the Creator and Travis Scott.
Simmons has also previously tried his hand at meteorology. In September, he joined KTLA 5 Morning News and hilariously pushed resident weatherman Henry DiCarlo aside to take over that week’s weather report.
