April 16 marks the centennial of Henry Mancini’s birth. The composer won album of the year at the inaugural Grammy Awards in 1959 (for The Music From Peter Gunn) and was the first composer to win back-to-back Oscars for best original song (for “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses,” both written with lyricist Johnny Mercer).
The Mancini family is celebrating the centennial on multiple fronts, and has announced The Henry Mancini 100th Sessions – Henry Has Company. The album, with a title that nods to Ray Charles’ posthumous 2004 hit Genius Loves Company, will be available June 21 via Primary Wave. The first single, “Peter Gunn” — featuring Quincy Jones, John Williams, Herbie Hancock, and Arturo Sandoval — is out now.

On being asked to contribute to the upcoming album, Michael Bublé said: “When the Mancini family calls and asks you to be a part of honoring the legacy of a genius, you say, ‘Thank you so very much. I would love to be there.’ … You say yes!”

Additionally, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Tuesday unveiled an installation on behalf of Mancini’s 100th birthday in its Cleveland Rocks gallery. The installation features Mancini’s Grammy for album of the year, a bomber jacket with embroidered “Hank” from the Pink Panther Tour, a handwritten score of Peter Gunn and more.

TCM will honor Mancini’s birthday Tuesday with a lineup of programming dedicated to the late composer. The full 24-hour schedule will feature classics that he scored, including The Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road.

This past Valentine’s Day, Tiffany’s in New York displayed a handwritten letter from Audrey Hepburn, the star of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, to Mancini. Last week, Tiffany’s in Tokyo unveiled its display of Mancini’s two Oscars for the film (best original song and best original score) as well as Hepburn’s dress from the film. The exhibition is open to the public until June 23.

CBS Sunday Morning has aired two tribute episodes on the Mancini centennial, with a third episode to be aired prior to the release of the album.

On Aug. 4, music director, conductor and arranger Kevin Stites will explore Mancini’s music at the annual Gala Benefit Evening at the Ravinia Festival. Curated and hosted by actor Rob Lindley, “Mancini at 100: The Music of Henry Mancini” features Broadway vocalists Jessie Mueller, Norm Lewis and Karen Mason.

This fall, The Extraordinary Life of Henry Mancini: Official Graphic Novel will hit shelves. This new graphic novel, written by David Calcano and illustrated by the studio Fantoons, illustrates every step in Mancini’s journey.

Mancini’s songs have been covered by a broad range of artists, including Beyoncé, Carpenters, Frank Ocean, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Elton John and R.E.M.

“Moon River” ranked No. 4 on AFI’s 2004 list AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs, behind “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca and “Singin’ in the Rain” from the movie of the same name. (Of these four songs, only “Moon River” and Over the Rainbow” were written for those films.)

“Days of Wine and Roses” ranked No. 39 on that list. Mancini’s score for The Pink Panther ranked No. 20 on AFI’s 2005 list AFI’s 100 Years of Film Scores.

Mancini was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy posthumously in 1995.

Mancini seemed to have a charmed life and career, except for dying at the relatively young age of 70 of pancreatic cancer. He died in Los Angeles on June 14, 1994, while he was working on the Broadway adaptation of Victor/Victoria. He had won his fourth Oscar for that 1982 film.

Steve Martin is typically unflappable. The veteran comedian and legendary quick-on-his-feet improvisor was atypically dumbstruck recently when his Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez showed up to fete him on the red carpet premiere of his Apple TV+ two-part documentary, Steve! (Martin).
In a video from the premiere earlier this month, Martin immediately gives Gomez some of his patented good-natured grief, joking, “I thought you said you were gonna get dressed up,” as Sel — wearing a stunning Oscar De La Renta black gown — leans in for a cheek kiss.

“Shush, shush, I’m so happy to be here, my family came!” Gomez tells Martin, who seems genuinely touched by the gesture, saying, “I can’t believe you’re here! Thank you so much… so nice of you!” While Gomez keeps telling him to “stop” making such a fuss, Martin appears to get a bit teary-eyed as the pair pose for some pics.

Trending on Billboard

Gomez tells Martin she’s excited to celebrate him, noting that she brought along her stepdad and grandma, as the funnyman waves to her family and jokes, “here’s what I like about you being here, you don’t know a thing about me.” Selena admits as much, shooting back, “Yeah, that’s why I came, so I can learn.”

She doth protest a bit too much, though, since the pair have very likely learned a lot about each other while shooting three seasons of the Hulu murder mystery comedy alongside Martin’s frequent comedic foil, Martin Short.

The two-part doc streaming now uses a combination of classic and never-before-seen footage to tell the “then” story of Martin’s rise to comedy’s Mt. Rushmore before his decision to abruptly quit doing stand-up tours and his “now” life as a beloved elder statesman joke sharpshooter.

In Katy Perry‘s words, American Idol viewers almost got way more than they bargained for on Monday night (April 15) when her elaborate metallic top nearly fell off during the top 14 episode. “I need my top to stay on,” the singer said before shooting a worried look at the camera as a team of fashion technicians descended. “If it’s not fixed, this show is going to get more than it wanted,” she added after some helpful crew members stepped in to repair the wayward steely bra.
Luckily, fellow panelist and part-time Tennessee gentleman farmer Luke Bryan stepped up to help, brandishing a pair of scissors and warning, “I’m going in!” before quickly deciding better of it. The show then cut to a clip of Perry cradling the shiny sculptural swoop and telling top 14 hopeful Roman Collins that his take on “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown “broke my top off… I guess it is a woman’s world!”

Before long, Perry was hiding under the judge’s desk, with just her head peeking out as Lionel Richie and Bryan quipped, “ratings!” and an embarrassed Perry responded, “It’s a family show.” The final shot featured Perry holding a white pillow up to cover up the Kate Barton crop top that kind of looked like a heavy metal shark.

Speaking of sharks, Perry later made a joke about the shape of her wayward costume, writing, “If you see a shark you’re left brained, if you see #idol tonight you’re my bestie.” And speaking to Access Hollywood, Perry explained, “I wouldn’t call it a malfunction, I just call it an interesting moment on live television. Seems like every season I’m either tearing the seam of my pants or I’m just super expressive physically. I love this outfit so much and I knew I was rolling the dice, but I was like, ‘who cares?’”

The episode also featured the top 20 being cut down to the top 14, which consists of Julia Gagnon, Roman Collins, Kayko, Nya, McKenna Faith Breinholt, Abi Carter, Will Moseley, Jordan Anthony, Mia Matthews, Kaibreinne, Emmy Russell, Jayna Elise, Jack Blocker and Tristan Harper.

Idol is back on Sunday (April 21) with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night, featuring guest mentor KISS bassist/singer Gene Simmons and the reveal of the 2024 RRHOF inductees and a live vote for the top 12. Monday night’s (April 22) show will feature guest mentor Meghan Trainor and the top 10 reveal on Billboard No. 1 hits night.

Twins, rock stars, standouts. Justin and Jeremy Garcia will be keen to join the crew.

The teenage San Francisco Bay Area brothers have cruised into the Knockouts round of this 25th season of The Voice, with a natural blend of harmonies and wholesomeness.

The 17-year-olds landed their Blind Audition with a cover of One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” catching the attention of coaches Chance the Rapper, Reba McEntire and newcomers Dan + Shay for a three-chair turn (only John Legend was unmoved).

“From the first time I heard you guys harmonizing, and I found out that it was two people, I was like, ‘We have to turn around. This is amazing,’” remarked Shay Mooney.

Those words of support helped the Garcia Twins choose Dan + Shay as their coaches this season.

In the Battles, the Garcias went up again another Garcia, 19-year-old Frank Garcia, with a performance of “Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga.

Frank delivered in a big way, and advanced. As the twins walked off the stage, defeated, McEntire used her Steal. “I wanted y’all so bad,” she enthused. “I love your harmonies, I love that you’re brothers, and it just sounds so good. I want to work with you so bad. Welcome to Team Reba.”

For these slippery Knockouts, the Filipino American pair performed Callum Scott’s “You Are the Reason,” going up against Team McEntire’s Zeya, who sang “River” by Bishop Briggs.

“Zeya, you did a great job,” coach McEntire remarked afterwards. “I would’ve loved to have seen you stay in one position in that song, but your voice is great. You know that.”

The brothers were involved in another plot twist, this time stepping out of their harmonies and splintering for individual runs. Coach McEntire was first out of her chair for a standing ovation.

“Y’all are cute as a button,” she said. “I thought you did a great job. There were a few little things where I thought you might’ve gotten lost, but congratulations on pulling this off. You did a wonderful job.”

Not only did they not get lost, they’re now on a straight-forward path. McEntire selected the brothers to advance to the Playoffs.

“It was a hard decision because Zeya is so good,” McEntire explained. “But I had to choose Justin and Jeremy because of the uniqueness of their act. Everybody’s a great singer, but we have to have something a little different and going with the brothers was part of my strategy.”

Emmy Russell is continuing on her late grandmother’s legacy — what could be a better birthday gift than that? Loretta Lynn‘s 25-year-old granddaughter stunned American Idol judges and viewers alike with a raw performance of an original song titled “Want You” on the show’s Sunday (April 14) episode, which aired the same day the legendary singer-songwriter would have turned 92.
Taking the stage backdropped by a blue screen of heavenly clouds, Russell channeled the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” star in a puffy-sleeved, collared floral dress and boots. Assisted by a backup band, she delivered crystal clear vocals while singing her self-written lyrics: “I want you to want me like I want you/ I want you to need me like I need you/ If you’re gonna leave me, then cut me loose/ I want you to want me.”

When cameras cut to the panel of judges, Katy Perry smiled, while Luke Bryan seemed mesmerized by the young hopeful’s moving performance.

After the performance, Lynn’s official Instagram account posted a photo of Russell and wrote, “What a birthday gift!”

“Emmy was born on [Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn] and Loretta’s anniversary and now we have this milestone on Loretta’s birthday!” the caption continued. “Loretta told all who would listen that Emmy had something special and now the world is seeing for themselves.”

The episode — which found this season’s top 20 contestants going head to head as the competition pool continues to be narrowed down — came exactly 92 years after Lynn was born in Butcher Hollow, Ky. A three-time Grammy winner, she remains one of country music’s most prolific songwriters and scored 42 top 10 entries on the Top Country Albums chart before her death at age 90 in 2022.

Perry, Bryan and Lionel Richie were flabbergasted to find out about Russell’s famous lineage when the Nashville-based artist first auditioned for Idol, for which she performed another original song — “Skinny.” “My grandma’s a country singer so I grew up singing,” she told the judges at the time, with Richie exclaiming after the big reveal, “Your grandma is … what?!”

“You’ve got the gift,” Perry told Russell after her audition. “I don’t think you need to compare yourself to what grandma was … you’re totally different, you shouldn’t give yourself all that pressure.”

Taylor Swift‘s fingerprints were all over Matthew Vaughn’s February film Argylle — and her three cats‘ paw prints are definitely in the mix, too.
In a new Hollywood Reporter story examining Hollywood’s recent surge in cat content, the director revealed that one of the highlights of his 2024 mystery thriller — the inclusion of a kitty sidekick named Alfie, whom Bryce Dallas Howard’s character carries around in a pet backpack — was directly inspired by the pop star’s affinity for felines. Specifically, it borrows from a scene in Swift’s Netflix documentary Miss Americana, which shows the singer wearing a similar backpack containing her Scottish Fold, Olivia.

“I saw a Taylor Swift documentary where she has her cat in a cat-pack and I remember thinking it was a crazy image,” Vaughn told THR, which is a sister publication to Billboard.

According to the filmmaker, an earlier version of Argylle‘s script had Howard’s Elly Conway leave Alfie behind, as a spy played by Sam Rockwell whisks her away into a world of violence and espionage. But Vaughn changed his mind, and the little cat ended up being one of the movie’s big selling points.

Trending on Billboard

“I thought having the three of them going on an adventure together would be fantastic,” he added. “I was nervous about it being a cat, because cats aren’t exactly the most trainable animal.”

The article — aptly titled “Cats Are Finally Having a Big Hollywood Meow-Ment” — also credits Swift as giving the creatures a popularity boost with her own love of cats. The 14-time Grammy winner is also cat mom to kitties Meredith and Benjamin, posing with the latter on the cover of Time for her December Person of the Year interview.

It’s only fitting that Swift played a small part in influencing Argylle, considering how many people suspected she secretly authored the real life Elly Conway’s book of the same name, which the film was based off of. Shortly before the flick hit theaters, though, Vaughn confirmed that it wasn’t the case.

Howard, however, revealed around the same time that she definitely had Swift in mind as she was shaping her performance. “She is a cat lady,” the actress said on The Graham Norton Show in January. “She’s got this awesome backpack with a cat in [it] that she walks around with. She loves a good argyle sweater, and there is a sort of unapologetic dorkiness about her. That’s a little bit like what my character is like.”
