Maybe Happy Ending was the top winner at the 2025 Tony Awards, winning six awards including best musical, best original score written for the theatre and best book of a musical. Will Aronson and Hue Park were winners in all three categories – with Aronson and Park being among the producers of the musical. Maybe Happy Ending is based on a South Korean one-act musical. The musical follows two life-like helper-bots, who discover each other in Seoul in the late 21st century.
The 78th Annual Tony Awards, hosted for the first time by Cynthia Erivo, were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday (June 8). The show was broadcast live coast-to-coast on CBS, and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.
Darren Criss, who was part of the chart-conquering Glee phenomenon and has had such solo successes as A Very Darren Crissmas, won two Tonys for Maybe Happy Ending – best actor in a leading role in a musical and as one of the producers of the show. The versatile performer won a Primetime Emmy for his role as spree killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018).

Nicole Scherzinger, who had four top 10 hits on the Hot 100 with The Pussycat Dolls, won best actress in a musical for Sunset Blvd. Glenn Close won in the same category for the original production in 1995.
Scherzinger beat Audra McDonald for a revival of Gypsy. McDonald has won more Tonys than any other performer (six), but has now lost in her last three nominations – for Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2020), Ohio State Murders (2023) and now Gypsy.
Trailing Maybe Happy Ending on the list of shows with the most awards were: Buena Vista Social Club with four awards; Sunset Blvd. and Stranger Things: The First Shadow, with three; and Purpose, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Oh, Mary! with two each.
The productions that experienced the biggest shut-outs, going home empty-handed, were: Dead Outlaw, John Proctor Is the Villain and The Hills of California, each of went 0-7 on the night, and Floyd Collins and Just in Time, each of went 0-6; and English, Good Night, and Good Luck and Gypsy, each of went 0-5.
Sunset Blvd. also won best revival of a musical (beating Gypsy, among others). The original production won best musical in 1995. Greg Berlanti is among the producers of the revival.
Buena Vista Social Club features music recorded by Buena Vista Social Club. The musical is set in Havana, Cuba and follows the lives of four musicians, and their eventual collaboration in 1997 on the landmark album Buena Vista Social Club. The music in the show is presented entirely in Spanish. The original album was inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2022 and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2024. This musical is based on a 1999 documentary about the making of the album that received an Oscar nod for documentary (feature).
Several people won for their Broadway debuts, including Sarah Snook, best performance by an actress in a leading role in play for The Picture of Dorian Gray; Jak Malone, best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical for Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical; and George Reeve, best scenic design of a musical for Maybe Happy Ending.
Snook won a Primetime Emmy in 2023, outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her role as Shiv Roy in HBO Max’s Succession.
Paul Tazewell won best costume design of a musical for his work on Death Becomes Her. Tazewell won an Oscar earlier this year for best costume design for Wicked. “A Black queer boy from Canton, Ohio had no idea that in 2025 he would have the year he has had,” Tazewell said in a accepting his Tony.
Cole Escola won best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for playing Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! Julie Harris won best actress in a leading role in a play in 1973 for playing the former first lady in The Last of Mrs. Lincoln.
Kara Young won best performance by an actress in a featured role in a play for Purpose. She won in that category last year for Purlie Victorious. She’s the second actress to win two years running in that category. The first was Judith Light in 2012-13 for Other Desert Cities and The Assembled Parties. Moreover, she’s the first Black actor to win back-to-back Tonys in any category.
Erivo and Sara Bareilles sang “Tomorrow” from Annie over the In Memoriam segment. It was an apt choice, as that song’s composer, Charles Strouse, died in May. Also in the spot: actors including Richard Chamberlain, Linda Lavin, Jean Marsh, Gavin Creel and James Earl Jones and producer Quincy Jones.

The Tony Awards on Sunday night (June 8) will include performances from all five nominees for best musical and all four nominees for best revival of a musical — as well as two more 2024-25 shows — Just in Time, which stars Tony-nominated Jonathan Groff as legendary performer Bobby Darin, and Real Women Have Curves, which features Tony-nominated Justina Machado.
There will also be a special 10th anniversary salute to Hamilton, with a performance by that show’s original cast. Three of that show’s stars, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Ariana DeBose, are also set to present on the show.
There will also be a performance by Broadway Inspirational Voices. The ensemble, founded by Michael McElroy, won a 2019 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater.

Cynthia Erivo, who won a Tony in 2016 for The Color Purple, is set to host the show for the first time. Brian Stokes Mitchell, who won a Tony for in 2000 for a revival of Kiss Me, Kate, will serve as the show’s announcer. The show will air from Radio City Music Hall in New York City for the first time in three years.
Other presenters include Adam Lambert, who played the emcee in Cabaret on Broadway; Lea Michele, who starred on Broadway in a revival of Funny Girl; and Sara Bareilles, a three-time Tony nominee and past Tonys cohost.
Past Tony winners Aaron Tveit, Bryan Cranston, Kelli O’Hara, Kristin Chenoweth, Lea Salonga and Sarah Paulson are also set to present.
Darren Criss and Renée Elise Goldsberry are set to host the pre-show, dubbed The Tony Awards: Act One. This could be a very big night for Criss, who is also a leading nominee for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for Maybe Happy Ending.
Two nominated shows, Buena Vista Social Club (which received 10 nods) and Stanger Things: The First Shadow (which got five) are guaranteed to go home with awards. The musicians who make up the band Buena Vista Social Club have been voted a special Tony Award. Other special Tonys will be presented to the illusions and technical effects of Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Other special Tonys will be presented to Harvey Fierstein, for lifetime achievement in the theatre; Celia Keenan-Bolger, the 2025 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award; and Great Performances, Michael Price, New 42 and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, 2025 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre.
The 78th annual Tony Awards will air live coast to coast on Sunday, June 8, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET on CBS (its network home since 1978) and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.
The Tony Awards: Act One is available to viewers for free on Pluto TV from 6:40 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET/3:40 to 5 p.m. PT. Viewers can access the show on their smart TV, streaming device, mobile app or online by going to Pluto TV and clicking on the Live Music channel, found within the Entertainment category on the service.

More than two dozen members of the original cast of Hamilton will reunite to perform at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8, to celebrate the show’s 10th anniversary.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote lyrics, music and book for the landmark show, will be participating in the performance, along with Carleigh Bettiol, Andrew Chappelle, Ariana DeBose, Alysha Deslorieux, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Sydney James Harcourt, Neil Haskell, Sasha Hutchings, Christopher Jackson, Thayne Jasperson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Stephanie Klemons, Morgan Marcell, Javier Muñoz, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Phillipa Soo, Seth Stewart, Betsy Struxness, Ephraim Sykes and Voltaire Wade-Greene.
Hamilton opened on Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre following 26 preview performances. It has since played more than 3,440 performances. At the 2016 Tony Awards, Hamilton made history with a record-breaking 16 nominations. It won a near-record 11 awards, including best musical. The show also won the Olivier Award, Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.

The cast album, which won a Grammy for best musical show album, has also shattered records. On June 26, 2023, it became the first original cast album to be certified Diamond by the RIAA. One month ago, it became the first original cast album to log 500 weeks on the Billboard 200. (The album, which ranks No. 35 this week, is currently in its 504th week on the chart.) This year, in its first year of eligibility, the cast album was inducted into the National Recording Registry. (Albums become eligible 10 years after their release.)

Buena Vista Social Club is set in Havana, Cuba and follows the lives of four musicians, and their eventual collaboration in 1997 on the landmark , Grammy-winning album Buena Vista Social Club. The music in the show is presented entirely in Spanish. The original album was inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2022 and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2024. This musical is based on a 1999 documentary about the making of the album that received an Oscar nod for documentary (feature).

The musicians who make up the band in Buena Vista Social Club are set to receive a Special Tony Award on the show. Death Becomes Her is based on the 1992 film of the same name starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn that was directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis. Maybe Happy Ending is based on a South Korean one-act musical. The musical follows two life-like helper-bots, who discover each other in Seoul in the late 21st century.
The four nominees for best revival of a musical are Floyd Collins, Gypsy, Pirates! The Penzance Musical and Sunset Blvd. The original production of Gypsy, starring Ethel Merman, was nominated for best musical in 1960. The original production of Sunset Blvd., starring Glenn Close won in 1995. The Joseph Papp production of The Pirates of Penzance, starring Rex Smith, Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline, won best revival of a musical in 1981. (The Gilbert & Sullivan operetta was more than a century old at that point.)
Gypsy has been nominated for best revival of a musical (or in a predecessor category, best revival) four times, more than any other show. Audra McDonald is nominated for best actress in a musical for her role this latest revival of Gypsy. It’s her 11th nomination, which is more than any other performer. She pulls ahead Julie Harris and Chita Rivera, who landed 10 Tony nods each. (Harris died in 2013; Rivera died in 2024.)
McDonald is the sixth actress to receive a Tony nomination for playing Rose in Gypsy. No other lead character – across plays and musicals – has netted six Tony nominations.
Two artists who have made various Billboard charts over the years are nominated. Darren Criss, who was part of the chart-conquering Glee phenomenon and has had such solo successes as A Very Darren Crissmas, is up for best actor in a musical for Maybe Happy Ending. Nicole Scherzinger, who had four top 10 hits on the Hot 100 with The Pussycat Dolls, is up for best actress in a musical for Sunset Blvd.
Criss is competing with, among others, Jonathan Groff for Just in Time and James Monroe Iglehart for A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical. Groff was last year’s winner in the category for the revival of Merrily We Roll Along. The versatile Criss won a Primetime Emmy for his role as Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018).
George Clooney received his first Tony nod for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for Good Night, and Good Luck. Clooney was nominated for Oscars for directing and co-writing (but not acting in) the 2005 film. Clooney is a two-time Oscar winner and the recipient of an honorary Emmy Award, the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
A Special Tony Award will be presented to The Illusions & Technical Effects of Stranger Things: The First Shadow (Jamie Harrison, Chris Fisher, Gary Beestone & Edward Pierce).
As previously announced, the 2025 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will be presented to Great Performances, Michael Price, New 42, and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The Tony Awards, in partnership with Audience Rewards, Broadway’s loyalty program for theater fans, has announced the return of the Official Tony Awards Challenge game. Beginning at noon ET on Thursday (May 1), following the announcement of the 2025 Tony Award nominations, Broadway fans can participate in an interactive ballot-style game in which they try to predict the winners of the Tony Awards in each of the 26 categories. Fans will have a chance to win a number of prizes, including a Dream Week on Broadway that includes airfare, hotel and tickets to five Broadway shows of their choice.
This year, all entrants who complete a ballot will automatically receive 500 Audience Rewards ShowPoints, regardless of the number of correct guesses. That’s enough points to redeem for an orchestra seat to a Broadway show for as low as $36. To play, visit the Tony Awards Challenge’s website. Players must be Audience Rewards members to enter. The program is free to join.

The Official Tony Awards Challenge, hosted by Audience Rewards in partnership with The Tony Awards, will begin on Thursday, May 1, at approximately 12 p.m. ET.
To play, entrants must either be pre-existing Audience Rewards members, or they can join the program for free to participate.
Players will guess/predict who they think will win in each of the 26 Tony categories. The grand prize for correctly guessing all 26 categories is the Dream Week on Broadway package.
Once players complete their ballot, they can adjust their predictions until 3 p.m. ET on Tony Sunday, June 8.

Actor and writer Harvey Fierstein will receive the 2025 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre at the 78th annual Tony Awards. The show, with first-time host Cynthia Erivo, will broadcast live on both coasts on Sunday, June 8 (8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT) on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.
Fierstein has won four Tony Awards — two for Torch Song Trilogy (best play and best actor in a play) and one each for La Cage Aux Folles (best book of a musical) and Hairspray (best actor in a musical). He also wrote the Tony-winning hit Kinky Boots. Other Broadway credits include Newsies, Legs Diamond and the revival of Funny Girl. He revised the book for the latter show, which had a hit run on Broadway following its London production.

Fierstein, 72, received a Primetime Emmy nod in 1992 for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for a guest spot on Cheers.
The Tony Awards will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City for the first time in three years. Nominations will be announced on Thursday, May 1, at 9 a.m. ET live on the Tony Awards’ YouTube Page.
The Tony Awards are produced in collaboration with Tony Award Productions, a joint venture of the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, and White Cherry Entertainment. Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss are executive producers and showrunners for White Cherry Entertainment. Weiss will serve as director.
A limited number of tickets to the show are now on sale to the general public. Ticket prices begin at $595 for seats in the second and third mezzanines and are available for purchase at the Tony Awards’ website and Ticketmaster. There is a six-ticket limit and all ticket sales are final (Ticketmaster services charges will apply).
Cynthia Erivo is set to host 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8. The ceremony will return to Radio City Music Hall in New York City for the first time since 2022. It will broadcast live to both coasts on CBS and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.
“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement. “I am looking forward to ushering the theater community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”

This is Erivo’s first time hosting the Tonys, where she was a winner in 2016 for her lead role in The Color Purple. Ariana DeBose, also a Tony winner, hosted the Tonys the last three years. This will be the fifth year in a row that a woman of color has hosted the Tonys. Audra McDonald did the honors in 2021.
Erivo, 38, is the star of Wicked, which has become the highest-grossing film adapted from a Broadway musical. Erivo is Oscar-nominated for best actress for her role in Wicked, though she is not expected to win when the awards are presented on March 2. (Rumors persist that she and co-star Ariana Grande may be enticed to perform on the show.) It’s Erivo’s third Oscar nod, following dual nods (best actress and best original song) five year ago for Harriet.
In addition to her Tony win, Erivo has won a Grammy and a Daytime Emmy, both for projects related to The Color Purple.
“Cynthia is a remarkable talent and with her deep roots in the theater community, we are honored to have her host this year’s Tony Awards on CBS,” Mackenzie Mitchell, vp of specials at CBS, said in a statement.

The Outsiders, based on the 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton and a 1983 film by Francis Ford Coppola, was a surprise winner for best musical at the 2024 Tony Awards, which were presented on Sunday (June 16). The award was thought to be a close race between Suffs, a musical about American women’s suffrage movement, and Hell’s Kitchen, a musical loosely based on Alicia Keys’ early life and music.
Stereophonic, a David Adjmi play with music, was named best play.
The 77th Annual Tony Awards, which were hosted by Ariana DeBose for the third consecutive year, aired live on both coasts from the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on Sunday, June 16 on CBS. The show also streamed on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Stereophonic was the year’s most-decorated production, winning five Tonys. It was followed by The Outsiders and a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, with four wins each. The original production of Merrily received just one nod in 1982 – original musical score. Two of the stars of the Merrily revival – Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe – won their first Tonys for their performances. The New Broadway Cast recording of Merrily We Roll Along entered Billboard’s Cast Albums chart at No. 1 in November 2023.
This is the fifth time that a revival of a Sondheim show has won best revival of a musical. Into the Woods won in 2002; followed by Assassins in 2004, and Company in both 2007 and 2022. Sondheim died in 2021 at age 91.
Trailing Stereophonic, Merrily We Roll Along and The Outsiders in terms of most wins were Appropriate, The Outsiders and Suffs, with three wins each; Hell’s Kitchen, with two; and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, An Enemy of the People, The Great Gatsby, Illinoise, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cottom Patch, with one each.
Water for Elephants was shut out despite seven nominations. Also shut out despite large numbers of nominations were Here Lies Love, Mary Jane and Mother Play, with four nods each.
The Outsiders is the second best musical winner in the past four years that was based on a film, following Moulin Rouge!. Other winners since 2000 that were based on films are The Producers (2001), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002), Hairspray (2003), Spamalot (2005), Billy Elliot the Musical (2009), Once (2012) and The Band’s Visit (2007). The last-named title was based on an Israeli film.
Angelina Jolie was among the producers of The Outsiders and now has a Tony to go along with the Oscar she won 24 years ago for best supporting actress for Girl, Interrupted.
Hillary Rodham Clinton was among the producers of Suffs, and received a thunderous ovation when she introduced a performance from the show. She was vying to become the first first lady to win a Tony, just as she was the first first lady to win a Grammy, in 1997, for the audio book of her best-seller, It Takes a Village.
Alicia Keys’ AK Worldwide Media, Inc. and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation were among the producers of Hell’s Kitchen. They lost the Tony for best musical, but they scored heavily on the telecast with a performance of “Empire State of Mind,” their Grammy-winning 2009 smash which is featured in Hell’s Kitchen.
Keys and Jay-Z weren’t the only music superstars to perform on the show. Pete Townshend also performed alongside the cast of The Who’s Tommy, which was nominated for best revival of a musical.
Shaina Taub won two Tonys – best original score and best book of a musical – for her work on Suffs. Taub is just the third woman in Tony history to win in both of those categories – and she’s the first woman to win in both categories entirely on her own. Betty Comden won both awards in 1978 for On the Twentieth Century, but she had collaborators in both categories. Lisa Kron won both awards in 2015 for Fun Home, but she had a collaborator in the score category.
Jonathan Tunick won best orchestrations for the revival of Merrily. Tunick’s only previous Tony win was for Titanic (1997), which made him the seventh EGOT winner. Three of the awards that make up Tunick’s EGOT were for Sondheim-related work. His only Oscar was for adapting the score for the 1978 film version of A Little Night Music. His only Grammy was for his arrangement of Cleo Laine’s recording of “No One Is Alone,” from Into the Woods.
George C. Wolfe and Jack O’Brien received lifetime achievement awards. Billy Porter received the Isabelle Stevenson Award, honoring humanitarian achievements. The show included a tribute to Broadway legend Chita Rivera, who died in January. Rivera also closed the In Memoriam segment, which also included actors Hinton Battle, Glynis Johns and Glenda Jackson and songwriters Richard Sherman and Sheldon Harnick, among others.
The 2023-24 eligibility season began on April 28, 2023, and ended on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Tony Awards in 26 competitive categories were voted on by 836 designated Tony voters within the theatre community.
