The Voice

And then there were 13.
Tuesday night’s (Nov. 15) episode of NBC’s The Voice was a nailbiter, a live elimination round which saw four contestants fight for a single spot.

During the show, Bryce Leatherwood (Team Blake) performed Billy Currington’s “Let Me Down Easy,” Sasha Hurtado (Team Legend) hit Sia’s “Elastic Heart,” Kevin Hawkins (Team Gwen) tackled Childish Gambino’s “Redbone,” and Kate Kalvach (Team Camila) covered Miley Cyrus’ “When I Look At You”.

There’s no second chance in this saloon.

After Monday night’s performances, America cast its vote, the tension ramped up. The four hopefuls stood, holding hands, waiting for their name to be called out. Only one could be picked as a wildcard entry.

The honors went to Leatherwood.

Earlier, the 22-year-old from singer from Woodstock, Georgia star beat duo The Dryes in a battle.

The country hopeful won-over Blake Shelton with his blind audition, during which he sang Conway Twitty’s “Goodbye Time”.

“Welcome to Team Blake,” Shelton said after that first performance. “Has there ever been a country-er name than ‘Leatherwood?’ You have excellent taste in music…I don’t feel too ego-y hitting my button for my own record…I was blown away. What a great country name. ‘Leather. Wood.’”

Leatherwood continues to blow Shelton — and many others — away.

“Bryce never disappoints. He always comes out here and gives a solid performance,” Shelton said after this last chance performance. “He’s got tons of fans out here. That’s why I wasn’t too stressed about putting him in this situation, because I really feel like you have as good a shot as anybody. Not just in the bottom four, but anybody in the competition, to pull yourself back out of this situation that you’re in right now. You sounded incredible, dude.”

The Top 13 contestants who advanced are Bodie (Team Blake), Brayden Lape (Team Blake), Parijita Bastola (Team Legend), Omar Jose Cardona (Team Legend), Kique (Team Gwen), Justin Aaron (Team Gwen), Morgan Myles (Team Camila), Devix (Team Camila), Rowan Grace (Team Blake), Kim Cruse (Team Legend), Alyssa Witrado (Team Gwen), Eric Who (Team Camila) and Leatherwood (Team Blake).

What do you get the guy that already has everything? Gwen Stefani is not entirely sure but has at least one hilarious gift idea in mind for her husband Blake Shelton‘s retirement from The Voice.

Ahead of Monday’s (Nov. 14) live shows on the singing competition, the No Doubt singer caught up with Entertainment Tonight and revealed that staff members on the program have been trying to figure out what to get Shelton after he completes season 23 of The Voice.

“This is crazy ’cause everyone’s coming after me for ideas, ‘What should we do?’ and it’s hard, you know, he has everything,” Stefani told the outlet. “But I think his favorite thing would be a bag of corn, like honestly, he would be so thrilled. Or fertilizer or something like that.”

Shelton announced his departure from the long-running NBC singing competition back in October after serving as a judge for 12 years. The “Boys ‘Round Here” singer, who has been present for all seasons of the show, crowned a champ from his team in eight of the show’s previous 21 seasons. Stefani previously remarked that she feels for viewers of the show in light of his impending departure come season 23. (Shelton will join The Voice veteran Kelly Clarkson for season 23 alongside newcomers Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper.)

“He’s brought so much joy. He’s so talented,” the “Hollaback Girl” singer told Entertainment Tonight last month. “I know people just wait around to laugh and watch him on TV, so I feel sorry for everybody [that] he’s gonna be gone.”

“It’s so weird Blake Shelton is leaving The Voice. I wasn’t ready, you know what I mean? I have to figure out who this new Blake’s gonna be,” she added. “I’m just so proud of him.”

When Parijita Bastola stepped onto the stage Monday night (Nov. 14) for NBC’s The Voice, the teenage hopeful leaned on Mother Monster.
For her appearance in the Top 16 Live Playoffs, the Severna Park, MD native went with Lady Gaga’s “I’ll Never Love Again,” a number many observers will see as a sign.

“I’ll Never Love Again” is, of course, a Grammy Award winner and the emotional cannonball that appears in the finale of A Star Is Born.

The aspiring Nepalese-American singer is just 17, but she delivered “I’ll Never Love Again” with all the power and emotion of a love-weary veteran.

The Team Legend contestant had all four coaches on their feet, and no doubt made new fans across the country.

“That was so emotionally beautiful and honest and it just pulled at everyone’s heartstrings,” Legend later enthused. “You set a spell on all of us and it was magical.”

Camila Cabello said what the rest of us were thinking. “You draw from such a well of emotion and you’re only 17,” she gushed. The performance was “masterful.”

Legend will be thankful for his quick thinking. Earlier in the competition, for her blind audition, she sang “Jealous” by Labrinth. Legend turned first and fast. Indeed, all four judges spun, but it was Legend who got the pick.

Before Bastola made her selection, she brought out presents for all of them: Rudraksha beads from Nepal, which she places around each of the panelists’ necks.

Then, in the Knockout Round, she knocked everyone out with her rendition of Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind.”

Going by the chatter online, Bastola could go far in this 22nds season of The Voice.

Gwen Stefani has made some solid choices in season 22 of NBC’s The Voice, and on Monday night (Nov. 7), she had some tough choices to make.
One of those solid choices is Justin Aaron, who impressed with a performance of “Glory” by Common and John Legend. Aaron, a paraeducator from Junction City, Kansas, lifted the spirts once again during the Battles, when he faced off against Destiny Leigh with a rendition of Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.”

The competitors are now at the Knockouts stage. As the name suggests, there are no second chances.

Aaron went up against fellow Team Gwen performers Cara Brindisi and Kayla von der Heide, for what panned out to be an impressive round. And a tough choice for Gwen.

“I’m so emotional right now, we had so much fun together,” she explained, stifling tears. “Just to be able to share and to, like, watch you grow, is just so unbelievably fulfilling to me,” she added. “I’m just proud, can you tell I’m proud right now.”

There could be only one, and it was Aaron who progressed to the Live rounds.

When Aaron performed for Stefani during rehearsals, she explained, “I was like, ‘there was no swag. And it was, like, 10 times flirtier on this stage right now. It was so good.”

What he’s got, it’s a “gift,” she remarked, and he took it to “another level.”

There’s so much more to come, the former No Doubt singer reckons. “He doesn’t fully realize how gifted he is. He’s so coachable. There’s no way that America’s not going to fall in love with him. We’re just getting started.”

The Voice is doing three-way knockouts for the first time this season, and on Tuesday night (Nov. 1), three of John Legend‘s best team members went head-to-head-to-head for a spot in the competition’s next round.

First up, Ian Harrison took views down a more alternative route with a smooth rendition of Young the Giant‘s “Cough Syrup,” before Omar Jose Cardona took on Imagine Dragons‘ “Radioactive,” which led to a standing ovation from Legend and fellow coach Camila Cabello. Morgan Taylor wrapped things up with a fresh, feminine take on the James Brown classic, “I Got You (I Feel Good).”

“You got a problem now, don’t you?” Blake Shelton told Legend after the three impressive performances.

The “All of Me” singer then began to address his contestants directly. “Ian, you sound like you should be making alternative records. No question,” he told Harrison. “But when you perform live, you need to make sure people feel it, not just vocally but physically. I think that’s the only thing that’s missing.”

Legend then told Taylor, “You started to open people’s eyes to how amazing you can be, and that’s exciting. You just nailed it, it was so good.”

Lastly, he gushed over Cardona’s performance, telling the singer, “You were building the performance and holding back in the right moments and then unleashing the dragon when necessary. You just built a journey in that short time.”

Fans will have to wait until the episode tonight to see who wins the knockout round, but check out the performances exclusively on Billboard below. The Voice airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

No one but OutKast could make us shake it like a Polaroid picture. Kique, however, shakes it with his very own style.
Robert “Kique” Gomez, a Miami-based Cuban singer, stepped into the Knockout Round of NBC’s The Voice on Monday night (Oct. 31), for a reboot of OutKast’s classic 2003 single and nine-week leader on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The teen did it his own way, inserting a new groove, style and some low, low notes.

Just 18 years of age, Kique opened Team Gwen’s three-way knockout, going up against Destiny Leigh (performing Christina Aguilera’s “Impossible”) and Rowan Grace (Billy Joel’s “Vienna”).

“One of my favorite things to do is change songs,” Kique remarks. “I really want Gwen to see that I’m not just a singer. I’m also a musician. I like to create compositions and make music and change things and make them my own.”

With his switcheroo, he got the place jumping and created for himself a good chance of staying the distance in this competition.

John Legend enjoyed what he heard. “For you to take that song and do what you did with it was so audacious,” the EGOT star says. “Truly one of the most compelling performances we’ve seen in three rounds on this show.”

“If this was a video game,” Camila Cabello notes, “you just skipped 20 levels today. For you to do a cover that was on the cutting edge of a song that was on the cutting edge was, like, Inception. I felt like a star was born. It was beautiful to watch.”

Stefani was left with a “very hard decision” decision to make. In the end, she sent Kique through to the live rounds.

“Kique is just a very unique type of singer, and I can’t wait to see what we do together next,” she explains.

It’s not all over for Rowan Grace, a student at Rapid City Central High School, who earned Blake Shelton’s steal.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have been bringing laughter, mentorship and hearty competition to season 22 of The Voice, but the husband and wife duo will go their separate ways — as coaches, not spouses — for the show’s next season. Shelton announced his departure from the long-running NBC singing competition earlier this month, which Stefani revealed on Thursday (Oct. 27) makes her feel sad for fans of the show.

“He’s brought so much joy. He’s so talented,” the “Hollaback Girl” singer told Entertainment Tonight.

Speaking with Extra, Stefani explained that she was initially nervous to be working alongside her husband, as season 22 marks her first time working alongside Shelton on The Voice since they married and after a hiatus from the show.

“I was nervous because I hadn’t been on for a few seasons and I hadn’t been on since we were married, and it is different … It’s like, ‘OK, wait, how are we gonna act?’” Stefani admitted. But once the pair was on set together, her nerves faded away.

She added, “It was like nothing … Blake, he would look so handsome because he’s all made up … It was like a flow of, like, memories from meeting him on ‘The Voice’… It was just super natural.”

Watch Stefani talk about Shelton and The Voice below.

As season 22 of The Voice continues to heat up, coaches Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Camila Cabello and John Legend have had to task members of their team to battle it out to songs of their choice. The final set of battles occurred on Tuesday night’s (Oct. 25) episode, which saw Legend pitting his team members Omar Jose Cardona and Lana Love against each other for a performance that, according to him, was inspired by his and Chrissy Teigen’s daughter, Luna.
As the pair rehearsed the track Legend chose for them — “Into the Unknown” from the Frozen 2 soundtrack — with Jazmine Sullivan as their celebrity advisor, he shared, “As a father of a 6-year-old girl, I’m very familiar. This one’s a classic.”

Come performance time, the pair did the theatrical Disney tune justice. They passionately sang the second verse in tandem: “Everyone I’ve ever loved is here within these walls/ I’m sorry, secret siren, but I’m blocking out your calls/ I’ve had my adventure, I don’t need something new/ I’m afraid of what I’m risking if I follow you,” Cardona and Love took turns belting, before launching into the titular chorus.

After Legend’s fellow coaches provided their critique — which largely saw three other coaches marveling at how Broadway-ready Cardona and Love’s voices are — he provided his thoughts on the battle and gave his decision.

“Lana, I just love your passion, the way you move your body when you sing. And everyone’s right — you should be on Broadway right now. You have the voice for it,” the “All of Me” singer shared. “Omar, I’ve never heard anyone sing like you, dude. You’re not just singing, you’re giving the physical performance, you’re getting into it. I like the way you even toss the mic to yourself. You just felt confident, in control. Just know that both of you, it was phenomenal to watch and just inspiring for us, honestly.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see who kept their spot on Team Legend. Watch Cardona and Love’s performance of “Into the Unknown” below.

Peak Whitney Houston was impossible to beat.

Clearly Andrew Igbokidi and Zach Newbould read the memo when they engaged in a Battle Tuesday night (Oct. 25) for NBC’s The Voice.

The Team Camila singers went to work with Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” steering it into different territory. The pair stripped it down, creating a midtempo number with few clues to the shiny ‘80s original.

“Zach your voice really shined,” enthuses Gwen Stefani. “It was like an alternative sounding voice in a pop song. I like the contrast of that.”

Igbokidi, she comments, had great range and unexpected runs. “And you are very beautiful, it was stunning when you came out.”

John Legend also picked up on Igbokidi knack for “very cool” unexpected vocal flurries. “You have an interesting approach to music.” His rival, however, is “more consistently on point” with “really lovely” tone. “It was really well executed”

Blake Shelton cut to the chase. Nerves got the better of Igbokidi. “Andrew, almost felt like something was holding you back,” he remarks. “I just think you’re better than what happened here today.” Newbould delivered best in this “tall task,” he admits.

Cabello went deeper on Igbokidi’s stumbles. “I think that your hypercriticism of yourself is keeping you from accessing the freedom and the fun to go to that next level. But the talent is there.”

However, Newbould stepped up under the bright lights. And he did it consistently.

Cabello had a decision to make. Her pick, like Igbokidi’s runs, was most unexpected.
