WMG and Stability AI Partner to Develop ‘Artist-Friendly AI Tools’

Trending on Billboard

Warner Music Group and Stability AI have formed a strategic partnership to advance what they’re calling “responsible AI in music creation.” The companies say the alliance, announced Wednesday (Nov. 19), is designed to help build an ethical music ecosystem that supports artists and songwriters.

The initiative will focus on building professional-grade tools that allow artists, songwriters and producers to experiment and create using ethically trained AI models. Both companies say the goal is to unlock new creative possibilities while ensuring proper licensing and safeguarding creators’ rights. The partnership will involve working directly with artists to understand how they use emerging technologies, shaping tools that enhance creativity without compromising quality or artistic control.

This move follows Stability AI’s recent alliance with Universal Music Group, announced in October, which also centers on integrating AI into music production responsibly. Beyond music, Stability AI has partnered with Electronic Arts to innovate game development and with WPP to enhance marketing through AI.

Stability AI is perhaps best known for its Stable Audio models, launched two years ago, which generate licensed music using text-to-audio technology. These models leverage “latent diffusion,” a technique first introduced in the company’s image-based Stable Diffusion product.

Carletta Higginson, executive vp and chief digital officer at WMG, called the partnership “an important step toward developing responsible, artist-friendly AI tools that expand creative possibilities while safeguarding the rights and integrity of music creators.”

Stability AI CEO Prem Akkaraju chimed in, adding, “WMG is a leader in the global music and entertainment landscape, and we’re proud to partner with a company that shares our Artist First ethos.”

UMG Partners With Stability AI to Develop Music Creation Tools for Artists, Producers

Trending on Billboard

Universal Music Group and Stability AI have announced a strategic partnership to develop music creation tools powered by “responsibly” trained generative AI.

The two companies said on Thursday that the collaboration will aim to support artists, producers and songwriters by integrating AI into the creative process while ensuring commercial safety and proper licensing. Stability AI’s research and product teams will work closely with UMG and its artists to explore new recording and composition methods, gather feedback and tailor tools to the needs of the creative community.

This alliance follows UMG’s quite recent agreement with Udio, which included a legal settlement over copyright infringement and a licensing deal that compensates artists for both AI training and outputs. UMG has been a pioneer in AI innovation, forging partnerships with platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Meta, while actively defending artists’ rights against unauthorized AI training.

Stability AI, known for its two-year-old Stable Audio models, specializes in generating high-quality, licensed music using text-to-audio technology. Their models, trained on professional datasets like Audio Sparx, offer control over audio generation through “latent diffusion” — a technique first introduced in their image-based Stable Diffusion product.

Beyond music, Stability AI has recently partnered with Electronic Arts to innovate game development and with WPP to enhance marketing through AI.

“This agreement is an extension of our fundamental orientation that our artists and songwriters are the cornerstone of our business,” said UMG’s chief digital officer Michael Nash. “With AI, as with everything else we do, we start with what best supports our work to help them achieve creative and commercial success and build from that foundation to forge new and better commercial and creative opportunities. And as we’ve made abundantly clear, we will only consider advancing AI tools and products based on models that are trained responsibly.”

Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI, said the partnership “marks the next chapter of music creation,” adding, “we put the artist at the center and build AI around their unique needs because real transformation has always come from a combination of art and science.”

Stability AI Launches Stable Audio 2.0 With Audio-to-Audio Generation Feature

Stability AI has launched Stable Audio 2.0, adding key new functions to the company’s text-to-music generator. Now, users can generate tracks that are up to three minutes long at 44.1 KHz stereo from a natural language prompt like, “A beautiful piano arpeggio grows to a full beautiful orchestral piece” or “Lo-fi funk.”

Stable Audio 2.0 also features an audio-to-audio generation feature, allowing users to manipulate any audio sample they want using text-based AI prompts. Its terms of service, however, requires that any audio uploaded to this tool is free of copyrighted material, with the tool employing a content recognition filter to ensure compliance.

Stable Audio 2.0 is the company’s first major music product to launch since its vp of audio, Ed Newton-Rex, resigned. To announce his exit, Newton-Rex wrote a lengthy post on social media saying, “I don’t agree with the company’s opinion that training generative AI models on copyrighted works is ‘fair use’… I hope others will speak up, either internally or in public, so that companies realise that exploiting creators can’t be the long-term solution in generative AI.”

Unlike some of the company’s other models, Stable Audio and Stable Audio 2.0 are only trained on training data it licensed from the music library AudioSparx. The library contains over 800,000 audio files containing music, sound effects and single-instrument stems as well as text metadata. All of the musicians who created the works in the AudioSparx library were given the option to opt out of being used to train Stable Audio’s model.

Stable Audio 2.0 is now available to use for free on the Stable Audio website and will soon be available on the Stable Audio API.

Stability AI Launches Its First Music Generator ‘Stable Audio’

Stability AI, one of the world’s most prominent generative AI companies, has joined the likes of Google, Meta and Open AI in creating a model that generates clips of music and sound. Called “Stable Audio,” the new text-to-music generator was trained on sounds from the music library Audio Sparx.

Stability touts its new product as the first music generation product that creates high-quality, 44.1 kHz music for commercial use though a process called “latent diffusion” — a process that was first introduced for images through Stable Diffusion, the company’s marquee product. Stable Audio uses sound conditioned on text metadata as well as audio file duration and start time to allow for greater control over the content of the generated audio.

By typing prompts like “post-rock, guitars, drum kit, bass, strings, euphoric, up-lifting, moody, flowing, raw, epic, sentimental, 125 BPM,” users can create up-to 20 seconds of sound through its free tier, or up-to 90 seconds of sound via its pro subscription.

In its announcement, the company touts Stable Audio as a tool for musicians “seeking to create samples to use in their own music.” The music generated could also be used to soundtrack advertisements and creator content, among other commercial applications.

“As the only independent, open and multimodal generative AI company, we are thrilled to use our expertise to develop a product in support of music creators,” says Emad Mostaque, CEO of Stability AI. “Our hope is that Stable Audio will empower music enthusiasts and creative professionals to generate new content with the help of AI, and we look forward to the endless innovations it will inspire.”

This is not the AI giant’s first foray into audio and music AI. The company already has an open-source generative audio label, HarmonAI, which is designed to create accessible and playful music production tools “by musicians for musicians.” Parts of the HarmonAI team, including Ed Newton Rex, its vp of product, took part in the designing of Stable Audio.
