SCL Awards
Emilia Pérez composers Clément Ducol and Camille, and composer Atticus Ross (Challengers and Shōgun) are the top nominees for the 2025 SCL Awards, which are presented by the Society of Composers & Lyricists.
The sixth annual awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on Feb. 12 and will be hosted by singer-songwriter Colin Hay, best known as the leader of 1980s band Men at Work.
Ducol and Camille, composers and songwriters of Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, received three nominations – one for Outstanding Original Score for a Studio Film, and two for Outstanding Original Song for a Comedy or Musical Visual Media Production for “Mi Camino” and “El Mal,” the latter of which they co-wrote with the film’s writer/director Jacques Audiard.

Ross also received three nods – Outstanding Original Song for a Comedy or Musical Visual Media Production for “Compress/Repress” from Challengers, which he composed with Trent Reznor and Luca Guadagnino, and two nods for the original title sequence and original score for Shōgun, which he composed with his brother Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba.
Diane Warren is nominated for Outstanding Original Song for a Dramatic or Documentary Visual Media Production for “The Journey” (from Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight). Warren has been nominated for an SCL Award every year. In 2023, she won in this same category for “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman.
Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt also received a nomination for “Never Too Late” from the Disney+ documentary Elton John: Never Too Late.
Composer Harry Gregson-Williams and director Ridley Scott will receive the Spirit of Collaboration Award, which recognizes a composer/director relationship that has created a prodigious body of work. This year’s Gladiator II marks their seventh collaboration. In his previous collaborations with Scott, Gregson-Williams has written the original scores for The Martian, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Duel, and House of Gucci, as well as themes for Prometheus and Exodus: Gods and Kings.
Last year, Martin Scorsese accepted the 2024 Spirit of Collaboration Award for his work with the late composer Robbie Robertson. Other past award recipients include Thomas Newman & Sam Mendes, Terence Blanchard & Spike Lee, Carter Burwell & the Coen Brothers, and Justin Hurwitz & Damien Chazelle.
Composer Jeff Beal, who has won five Primetime Emmys, will be awarded the SCL Jury Award for his new score for the 1920 Weimar Cinema silent film classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
Final voting for the 2025 SCL Awards will open on Jan. 27 and close on Feb. 3.

Giorgio Moroder, who has won three Oscars and two Grammys for film music (out of a total of four Grammys won) will receive a lifetime achievement award from The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) during its 35th annual holiday dinner, to be held at the Sheraton Universal ballroom in Los Angeles on Dec. 11.
At that same event, composers Hoyt Curtin and Carl Stalling will posthumously be inducted into the SCL Hall of Fame. Curtin composed themes for such Hanna-Barbera series as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Josie and the Pussycats, Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest and The Smurfs. He served as music director at Hanna-Barbera from 1957 to 1965 and again from 1972 until his retirement in 1989.
Stalling created music for more than 600 animated films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940) and Fantasia (1940), and Warner Bros. cartoon series Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. He served as music director at Warner Bros.

Film and TV composer Brian D. Siewert has been named the recipient of the SCL’s 2024 Trailblazer Award. Siewert won four Daytime Emmys for his work on Guiding Light.
EGOT-winning songwriters Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and Jeff Beal, the winner of five Primetime Emmys, will be presented with 2024 SCL Ambassador Awards. Pasek and Paul clinched EGOT status in September when they won a Primetime Emmy for a song they wrote for Only Murders in the Building. Beal has won Emmys for his work on Monk, Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, The Company and House of Cards.
The awards presentations and inductions will take place at SCL holiday events in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville.
In making the announcements, Ashley Irwin, president of the SCL, said, “The SCL Lifetime Achievement Award and these other special honors were created to recognize and acknowledge a select group of music creators with significant contributions to our profession and music community. Their achievements will be used as the ultimate standard for future generations of media composers and songwriters.”

Dec. 7 – Nashville: Film and TV composer Brian D. Siewert will be honored with the SCL’s 2024 Trailblazer Award during the SCL Nashville holiday party to be held at Oceanway Studios Nashville (1200 17th Ave S), from 4 to 7 p.m.
Dec. 11 – Los Angeles: SCL will present the Lifetime Achieve Award to Giorgio Moroder and posthumously induct Hoyt Curtin and Carl Stalling during its holiday dinner to be held at the Sheraton Universal Ballroom from 6 to 10 p.m.

Jon Batiste, Nicholas Britell, Taura Stinson, Carlos Rafael Rivera, Fabrizio Mancinelli and Allyson Newman are each nominated for two awards at the 2024 SCL Awards, presented by The Society of Composers and Lyricists.
Many of the SCL contenders echo the Oscar shortlists for best original song and best original score which were revealed earlier today (Dec. 21). SCL nominees include songwriters Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Lenny Kravitz, Diane Warren, and Jon Batiste who earned spots on the Oscar shortlist for best original song.
SCL nominees who were Oscar-shortlisted for best original score include Anthony Willis for Saltburn, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt for Barbie, Laura Karpman for American Fiction, the late Robbie Robertson for Killers of the Flower Moon and Mica Levi for The Zone of Interest.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists reports that it has nearly 4,000 members. According to the SCL, about half of the members of the music branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences are also members of the SCL.
The SCL Awards, now in their fifth year, will be presented on Feb. 13 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Other categories still to be announced include the Spirit of Collaboration Award which honors a long and fruitful relationship between a composer and a director.

Two 2023 Oscar contenders, Son Lux and Diane Warren, each won awards in competition at the fourth annual SCL Awards, presented by The Society of Composers & Lyricists. Emmy winner Darren Criss hosted the event, which was held on Wednesday (Feb. 15) at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
Son Lux, Oscar-nominated for best original score for Everything Everywhere All at Once, won outstanding score for an independent film. The award was accepted by the trio’s Ryan Lott. Warren, Oscar-nominated for best original song for “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman, won outstanding song for a drama/documentary.
Michael Abels was a double winner on the night. He won outstanding original score for a feature film for Nope as well as a Jury Award for Omar, an opera he composed with Rhiannon Giddens.
The SCL presented two 2023 Jury Awards in recognition of the increasing number of ways music is used in an audiovisual context. These awards are voted on by the SCL board of directors. The other went to the audiovisual concert experience Women Warriors: The Voices of Change, for which Amy Andersson is musical director.
The Spirit of Collaboration Award was presented to composer Justin Hurwitz and director Damien Chazelle, who have collaborated on five films, including La La Land, for which they each won Oscars, and the 2022 film Babylon, for which Hurwitz is again nominated for an Oscar for best original score. The presentation was accompanied by a musical performance which included “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from La La Land, the First Man theme for harp and theremin, and a Babylon medley.
The Spirit of Collaboration Award, considered the SCL’s most distinctive and perhaps most meaningful, is presented to a composer and filmmaker who maintain a distinguished creative partnership. Previous recipients are Thomas Newman and Sam Mendes, Carter Burwell and the Coen Brothers, and Terence Blanchard and Spike Lee.
Additionally, filmmaker/lyricist Guillermo del Toro and lyricist Roeban Katz accepted their award for outstanding original song for a musical or comedy for “Ciao Papa” from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which they co-wrote with Alexandre Desplat.
Nami Melumad, who became Star Trek’s first female composer with Star Trek: Prodigy, won the David Raksin Award for Emerging Talent for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Stephanie Economou, who received the first ever David Raksin Award at last year’s ceremony, won best original score for interactive media for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök. Also, Emmy-winning composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer won outstanding original score for a television production for White Lotus for the second year in a row.

Less than 24 hours after Alexandre Desplat was shortlisted for Academy Awards for best original song and best original score for his work on Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, the French composer emerges as the top nominee for the 2023 SCL Awards for his work on that same film.
Desplat is nominated for outstanding score for a studio film and outstanding song for a musical/comedy for “Ciao Papa,” which he co-wrote with Del Toro and Roeban Katz.
