Jeff Lynne’s ELO Announce Dates For Final North American Tour

Jeff Lynne‘s ELO announced the dates for the power pop group’s final run of North American dates on Monday (March 18). The 27-date Over and Out Tour is slated to kick off on August 24 in Palm Desert, CA and keep the “Evil Woman” band on the road through late October, with stops in Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Phoenix and Sacramento before winding down on Oct. 25 with a show at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Tickets for the tour by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rockers best known for such symphonic power pop AM radio stapes as “Strange Magic,” “Mr. Blue Sky,” “Do Ya?” and “Turn to Stone” will go on sale beginning with an artist presale kicking off on Wednesday (March 20) at 10 a.m. local time; the general onsale will begin on Friday (March 22) at 10 a.m. local time, click here for information.

Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel & ‘Make Me Smile’ Singer, Dies at 73

Steve Harley, the frontman of British rock band Cockney Rebel, has died. He was 73.

The English singer-songwriter’s family confirmed the news of his passing through social media on Sunday (March 17).

“We are devastated to announce that Steve, our wonderful husband, father and grandfather, has passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side,” reads the statement on Facebook. “The birdsong from his woodland that he loved so much was singing for him. His home has been filled with the sounds and laughter of his four beloved Grandchildren.”

A cause of death was not provided, but Harley noted on his website earlier this year that he would not be touring in 2024 “due to on-going treatment for cancer.”

“Steve took enormous comfort from all of his fans’ well wishes during his battle, and we know he would want to thank you all deeply for your love and support throughout his career, and during his battle to the end,” his family’s statement said. “We know he will be desperately missed by countless friends, family and devoted fans all over the world, and we ask that you respectfully allow us privacy to grieve.”

Harley is perhaps best known for Cockney Rebel’s 1975 hit “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” which topped the U.K. charts. The London-born musician joined Cockney Rebel in 1972 and the glam rock band released its debut album, The Human Menagerie, the following year. The group went on to release The Psychomodo in 1974 and later renamed itself Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel following lineup changes.

Although “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” was not a hit in the U.S. (the song peaked at No. 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976), the track has been covered more than 100 times by artists including Duran Duran, Erasure and Robbie Williams.

After Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel parted ways in 1977, Harley enjoyed a solo career, with his final release being the 2020 covers album, Uncovered, which featured renditions of songs by David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and others.

Cage the Elephant Back Atop Adult Alternative Airplay Chart With ‘Neon Pill’

Cage the Elephant tops Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart for the first time in nearly four years, as “Neon Pill” rises to No. 1, from No. 2, on the survey dated March 23.

“Neon Pill” is the act’s first No. 1 since “Black Madonna” led for two weeks in April 2020. In between the two songs, the band reached No. 3 with “Skin and Bones” in February 2021.

Cage the Elephant notches its sixth career Adult Alternative Airplay ruler, having first led with “Come a Little Closer” for two weeks in March 2014. Its other No. 1s: “Mess Around” (two weeks, February 2016), “Ready To Let Go” (one week, March 2019) and “Social Cues” (one week, October 2019).

Concurrently, “Neon Pill” bullets at its No. 3 high on Alternative Airplay and ranks at No. 30, after reaching No. 29, on Mainstream Rock Airplay.

On the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, “Neon Pill” lifts 6-5 with 5.2 million audience impressions, a gain of 2%, March 8-14, according to Luminate. It’s the band’s 11th top five hit and first since “Skin and Bones” reigned for five weeks beginning in February 2021.

“Neon Pill” is the lead single and title track from Cage the Elephant’s sixth studio album, set to be released May 17 via 110/RCA Records. It follows Social Cues, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart in May 2019, and has earned 469,000 equivalent album units to date.

The Black Keys Top Alternative Airplay Chart With ‘Beautiful People’

The Black Keys snag their seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart via “Beautiful People (Stay High),” which rises to the top of the March 23-dated tally.

The song becomes the duo’s first ruler since “Wild Child” led for two weeks in May 2022. The act first reached No. 1 with “Tighten Up,” a 10-week topper beginning in November 2010.

Concurrently, “Beautiful People” ranks at No. 2 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart, descending after a five-week command. It also remains at its No. 22 high on Mainstream Rock Airplay.

On the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, the tune places at its No. 3 best for a seventh straight week, with 5.7 million audience impressions, up 4%, March 8-14, according to Luminate.

The most recently published multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs list (dated March 16) found “Beautiful People” ranked at No. 49. In addition to its radio airplay, the song earned 436,000 official U.S. streams March 1-7.

“Beautiful People” is the lead single from Ohio Players, The Black Keys’ 12th studio album, due April 5 via Easy Eye Sound/Nonesuch/Warner Records. The LP’s predecessor, Dropout Boogie, debuted at its No. 2 peak on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart in May 2022. It has earned 149,000 equivalent album units to date. On the Billboard 200, the set launched at its No. 8 best, marking the act’s sixth top 10. The Black Keys led the all-genre chart with Turn Blue in May 2014.

Jon Bon Jovi Unsure About Touring Following Vocal Cord Surgery: ‘Still Recovering’

Jon Bon Jovi is opening about whether he’ll be able to tour after undergoing vocal cord surgery in 2022.

In a recent radio interview, the iconic Bon Jovi frontman, 61, said that he’s still recovering from the medical procedure and can’t confirm if he’ll be able to hit the road in support of the New Jersey band’s forthcoming album, Forever, which arrives this summer.

“I don’t know about a tour,” Bon Jovi told Mix 104.1 Boston. “It is my desire to do a tour next year, but I’m just still recovering from a major surgery.”

The “Livin’ on a Prayer” singer underwent surgery in 2022 after one of his vocal cords was “atrophying” — with one being “thick as the thumb” and the other being “thick as a pinky,” according to People.

“Although I’m well on the road to recovery and was able to take my time and do a song a day when I made the record, my need, want, desire is to be able to do two-and-a-half hours a night four nights a week for months on end,” Bon Jovi told the radio outlet. “And so I’m working towards that goal.”

Earlier this year, Jon Bon Jovi was honored at the MusiCares 33rd Person of the Year annual gala in Los Angeles. During the Feb. 2 event, he performed “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” with Bruce Springsteen. Other performers included Melissa Etheridge, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Pat Monahan, Shania Twain and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Bon Jovi’s 16th album, Forever, is scheduled for release on June 7. The Jersey giant’s dropped the LP’s first single, the upbeat rock bop “Legendary,” on March 14.

Watch Paul Simon Marvel Over the Making of ‘Cecilia’ in Upcoming Documentary

In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon is a compelling look at one of the America’s greatest songwriters. Directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney, the two part documentary, which premieres March 17 on MGM +, follows Simon as he makes his latest album, 2023’s Grammy nominated Seven Psalms, while chronicling the 16-time Grammy winner’s seven-decade career as a solo artist and as half of Simon & Garfunkel.

The concept for the latest album came to him in a dream and during the process of making the set, he lost hearing in his left ear, which affected his ability to hear himself sing.

Gibney follows him through that ordeal, but also goes back to Simon’s school boy days when he and Garfunkel met in grade school when they were 11. By the time they were 16, they had a record deal as Tom & Jerry in 1957 with the hit “Hey Schoolgirl.” Their first album under Simon & Garfunkel, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., came out on Columbia in 1964.

After the first album tanked, Simon dropped out of law school and moved to London to pursue a solo career. It was only after producer Tom Wilson remixed the album’s “Sounds of Silence” as a rock song that it became a hit and the pair reunited and went on to have a tremendously successful partnership, despite personal conflicts.

While making their fifth (and last) album, 1970’s landmark Bridge Over Troubled Water, the duo, with producer Roy Halee, recorded “Cecilia,” a chugging, clapping tale of love gone wrong that included a taped loop long before they were common in songs.

In this exclusive clip above, Simon marvels at the original tapes, which he thought were lost, as he listens to them today and looks back on the recording.

“Roy, he really was an innovator” he says of Halee. “We kept tumbling into adventures and discoveries.”

Halee continued working with Simon into his solo career, producing the groundbreaking Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints.

Inside Luck Reunion: 5 Lessons Learned From Willie Nelson’s Iconic Festival

As fans at the off-site parking lot board a shuttle that will take them to their final destination — Willie Nelson’s coveted Luck Reunion — Noah Kahan’s “All My Love” plays from the bus’ speakers, setting a rallying and welcoming tone for the long day ahead.

Celebrating its 12th year, the Luck Reunion offers a well-crafted lineup of known names and emerging talent, which this year includes the expected headliner of Willie Nelson and Family as well as Tyler Childers, Dawes with Lucius, the Red Clay Strays, Durand Jones and more. As for rising stars, Dylan LeBlanc, Madi Diaz, Ogi and more rounded out the lineup of over 40 acts.

Held at Luck Ranch, the expansive plot of land included all a festivalgoer could want or need: free beer; a well-selected variety of food vendors from Hattie B’s Hot Chicken to local BBQ, lobster rolls and more; vendors selling everything from vintage cowboy boots to custom western hats; plus an on-site Willie’s Reserve shop offering CBD and hemp products and more.

Earlier in the day, the legend and host himself announced his upcoming album The Border, out May 31 — just over a month after the singer-songwriter will turn 91. (On the Ranch, there was only one advertisement for the album, a poster of the album art near the entrance with a QR code to scan for more information.)

To coincide with the news, Nelson released the project’s lead single and title track, his take on Rodney Crowell’s “The Border,” co-written by Crowell and Allen Shamblin for the former’s 2019 album Texas.

Below, read on for five lessons learned after entering the sacred space of Luck Ranch.

It’s Willie’s Wonderland

The moment you step onto the grounds of “Willie’s Backyard” in Spicewood Texas, there’s no mistaking where you are. There’s a Hollywood-inspired “LUCK” sign atop a hill, a Luck Reunion wooden archway and a handful of stages are branded with a “Luck Reunion” neon sign. But it hardly ends there. The strength of the Willie Nelson brand is inescapable at Luck Ranch — and rightfully so. At the main merchandise tent, where Luck Reunion and Luck, Texas merch is aplenty, there are also T-shirts and hats reading “Willie For President.” And a bit beyond, there’s Willie’s Reserve, a small shop with even more Willie-inspired merch, from ashtrays and hemp or CBD joints to t-shirts, totes, mugs and more.
The Grounds Were Built as a Movie Set

Built in 1985 as the backdrop for the film Red Headed Stranger, an adaptation of Nelson’s album of the same name, the Luck Ranch set was meant to be burned to the ground for the film’s final scene, but the country music star scrapped those plans last minute, opting to keep the set as part of his sprawling central Texas estate. Located just 45 minutes outside Austin in a town called Luck, Texas, Nelson and his friends use the old western set as a gathering place. Eventually, the crew decided to invite others in for a day of music each March — timed to SXSW — dubbed “Luck Reunion.”
Its Main Stage Is Solar-Powered

In 2023, Luck Reunion partnered with REVERB to become the first U.S festival to have a 100% solar-powered main stage, which resulted in a 90% decrease of fuel consumption. The solar-power stage returned to the 2024 festival — and the idea of a sustainable future didn’t stop there as electric Rivian trucks were on display for attendees to inquire about or even hop in to test out for themselves.
The Crowd’s Vibe Is Unmatched

There is an air of “luck” that radiates throughout the festival — likely given the nature of the tickets by draw system. Plus, there’s the fact that those who are there likely had a bit of a journey to get in as the fest is a bit outside of Austin — lending to the remote and curated nature that makes Luck Reunion feel particularly special. And, of course, there’s also the small detail that beer is included with admission.
It’s a True Family Affair

At 5 p.m., hours ahead of the anticipated Willie Nelson & Family headlining gig, the legend’s son Lukas Nelson has his own solo slot within the on-site Chapel. Given the tiny venue’s tiny capacity — the space holds exactly 49 people — fans were leaning into the gorgeous stained-glass windows hoping to hear a bit of his set. But for those who couldn’t get close enough to enjoy the intimate performance, Willie’s closing set — the last of more than 40 performances across the day — always delivers.

Bon Jovi Prepping ‘Forever’ Album, Drop Upbeat ‘Legendary’ Single

Bon Jovi are celebrating their fourth decade of rocking with the upcoming release of their 16th album, Forever. The Jersey giants announced the news on Thursday morning (March 14), along with releasing the LP’s first single, the upbeat rock bop “Legendary.”

“This record is a return to joy. From the writing, through the recording process, this is turn up the volume, feel good Bon Jovi,” said singer Jon Bon Jovi in a statement about the album due out on June 7. The CGI-heavy video for “Legendary” finds the band rocking out in a grassy digital field as leader Bon Jovi sings, “Who are you and who am I/ To think that we could ever fly/ It don’t pay to even try/ Work get paid and just get by,” before busting into the uplifting chorus, “I raise my hands up to the sky/ Don’t need more to tell me I’m alive/ Got what I want/ Cuz I got what I need/ Got a fistful of friends/ That’ll stand up for me/ Right where I am is where I wanna be.”

The rousing chorus packs in several allusions to classic rock songs, including Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” and Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.” The band will be the subject of the upcoming four-part Hulu docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, which will debut on the streamer on April 26.

Glastonbury 2024 Lineup: Dua Lipa, Coldplay, SZA, Shania Twain to Headline

The 2024 Glastonbury Festival will feature headliners SZA, Dua Lipa and Coldplay on the Pyramid Stage atop a packed roster that will also feature country icon Shania Twain in the “legend slot.” The June 26-30 summer classic at Worthy Farm in Somerset in South West England will also feature Glasto debuts from Avril Lavigne, Cyndi Lauper and Camila Cabello and the first-ever K-pop group main stage performance from Seventeen.

This year’s festival will mark Dua Lipa’s first Pyramid Stage slot as Friday’s headliner, with the singer slated to perform a month after the release of her upcoming 11-track third studio album, Radical Optimism, which drops on May 3. Veterans Coldplay will topline Saturday night in their first Glasto since 2016, making history as the first group to headline the event five times; SZA will top the roster on Sunday night.

On X, Twain gushed about the booking, calling it “another jewel in my crown. I feel so honoured and so excited about this one! Thinking about what to wear already and tell me, what should we sing together?! Let’s make history with this ultimate dream performance!!” In an accompanying video, the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer said, “This is a dream come true! I have been asked about Glastonbury now for years and it’s finally coming together! I’m packing my wellies [rainboots] and my raincoat, and of course, my cowboy hat. So, I’ll see you in the beautiful Somerset countryside this summer.”

Bon Jovi’s ‘Always’ Music Video Hits 1 Billion YouTube Views

Bon Jovi has notched another video in the Billion Views Club. The band’s clip for their 1994 hit, “Always,” hit one billion views on YouTube.

It’s their third music video to reach the accomplishment, following 2000’s “It’s My Life” and 1986’s “Livin’ On a Prayer.” The Marty Callner-directed clip showing a difficult breakup stars Jack Noseworthy, Carla Gugino, Jason Wiles and Keri Russell and was made available on YouTube in 2009.

“Always,” featured on Bon Jovi’s 1994 album, Cross Road, reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, marking one of the band’s 10 top 10 hits on the tally. “Always” was also bass player Alec John Such’s final single with the band before he left in late 1994.

Cross Road, meanwhile, debuted and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and remained on the chart for an impressive total of 57 weeks. The album featured lasting hits like “Livin’ On a Prayer,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “I’ll Be There For You,” among others.

In other Bon Jovi news, the band is the subject of an upcoming deep-dive four-part docuseries that drops next month on Hulu. Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story chronicles the band’s epic, four-decade career. All episodes will arrive for streaming April 26, retelling the Bon Jovi story with personal videos, unreleased early demos, original lyrics, and never-before-seen photos, according to Hulu.
