It’s a stormy night in Miami on Saturday (Oct. 12), but the atmosphere inside Factory Town was sweltering as the Red Bull Batalla USA National Final 2024 touched down. This celebrated annual event has grown to be a cultural phenomenon, bringing together 16 of the illest, most clever improvisational wordsmiths in the country — all hailing from different Latin American backgrounds — to compete for the best lyrical face-off.
Now in its final round to determine this year’s national winner, it was up to Freites, originally from Venezuela, and Venezuelan-Dominican rapper AdonysX to take the trophy. With the crowd growing thicker, and the atmosphere turning electric, each lyricist ratcheted up the intensity, spitting bars that echoed through the charged air. The spectators, gripped by each piercing line and sharp retort, were witnesses to an epic cultural clash that transcended just words.
Ultimately, AdonysX claimed the title of the best Spanish-language freestyler in the nation. The stage also featured prominent competitors including last year’s National Final runner-up, Zazowan, Miami’s Colombian sensation Nico B, seasoned Mexican rapper Jordi, New York City’s regional champion AdonYS (distinct from the national winner AdonysX), and more

“The atmosphere of a battle can vary; it might be charged with energy or more [subdued], but either way, it remains intense,” says AdonysX, speaking a few weeks after winning the regional event in his native New York. “At every moment, the energy can [fluctuate], but overall, the environment demands a lot from you.”

The evening was also highlighted by a performance from Akapellah, one of the best Spanish-language rappers of all time, who additionally took a seat at the judges’ table for the event alongside Reverse, Dilema, and Snow QLQ.
“The pioneer that started it all was Red Bull Batalla. It has been a launching pad for many, including myself,” Akapellah tells Billboard Español, who assumed the role of judge this year for the USA National Final. “I believe that 80% of the biggest artists in Latin hip-hop and Spanish-speaking music, we all come from battling, we all grew up watching Red Bull Batallas. It was our influence, it was our bridge to jump into the world of the music industry.”
Originally known as Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos, the stateside competition was established in 2019, though the entire franchise was created in 2005, following the success of the Eminem-starring blockbuster, 8 Mile. It’s now approaching its 17th installment, which will take place in Madrid, Spain on November 30. Every year, the international competition takes place in a different Spanish-speaking country.
“We all grew up watching those battles. For me, it’s incredible that today I am a judge after when I was a kid, the first time I tried to do it compete I was underage. I didn’t have a passport and they let me participate in the regional competition in my city at that time, but just for fun,” says the Venezuelan rap titan, who mentions he won but wasn’t able to advance to the next level due to visa constraints.

Over the past three years, the Red Bull Batalla U.S. championship trophy has been claimed by residents of the state with notable wins from Oner and last year’s champion Reverse, who, after his victory, became a U.S. double champion — like Puerto Rican MC, Yartzi, who won in 2019 and 2020.
“The first time there was a Red Bull Batalla in the USA, it was something historic. It was the last location to be added to the battle circuit. And the inclusion of the United States, giving the opportunity to all immigrants and all Latinos in the United States, was really significant,” Yartzi tells Billboard Español. “Every year more talents, more personalities, and more MCs are added. Each year the competition becomes more intense in terms of retaining that title.”
Outside of the freestyle scene, Yartzi today leverages his highly touted lyrical skills to compose for some of the biggest names in Latin music. He’s collaborated with producers such as Jorge Miliano, DJ Blass and Major Lazer as well as reggaetón superstars like Anuel AA, Wisin y Yandel, Nicky Jam, Ozuna, Lunay, Tainy and more.
As all national finalists from the Americas and Spain turn their focus to the global stage, Akapellah also offers a reminder: “Freestyle has developed its own siginficant identity and somewhat diverged from traditional hip-hop, which is a delicate topic. There are incredibly talented artists who would benefit immensely from a broader vocabulary to enrich their rhymes,” he offers, citing the ingestion of more literature.
Echoing the broader benefits of participating in Red Bull Batalla, AdonYS emphasizing its role beyond merely providing a stage. “It gives you a lot of connections, countless opportunities and doors that can open to a wider world of music and the industry,” he says. “The idea is to continue helping the guys that are coming up in any way we can. The idea is that we all come up together so freestyle continues to grow.”
“As the saying goes, and not to sound cliché, but it truly gives you wings because it exposes your talent to the world in a way you might not achieve on your own,” says Yartzi, reflecting on the transformative power of the platform. “As an independent artist, it helps to propel you and captures the global spotlight. Participating as a rapper from Puerto Rico also drew attention from reggaeton artists, my compatriots, leading to many relationships formed through this achievement.”

The lineup will also feature Shaboozey (who is in his 12th week atop Billboard’s Hot 100 with his song “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” BRELAND, Tucker Wetmore, Priscilla Block, Muscadine Bloodline and sibling trio The Castellows.
Ward Guenther, founder/owner of the popular music discovery series Whiskey Jam, will be on hand to host the event. He tells Billboard he and his team “worked very closely with them on curating the lineup.”
Trending on Billboard
“We try to include Whiskey Jam family members, ‘Jam Fam,’ as we like to call ’em, people that have played our shows through the years and honestly just bring the best blend of music and entertainment that we could find,” Guenther said. “Brothers Osborne has one of the best live shows you’ll ever see. So as a headliner, they’re going to encompass exactly what we want to do with this event, having a high-energy set that is as much for the audience as it is for the artists involved. We chose [outdoor venue] Ascend Amphitheater as a good place to start — it feels like a mini-festival.”
The Nashville show will be the Red Bull Jukebox series’ first event within the United States, having previously been held in countries including Japan and Switzerland (the Switzerland show featured the artist Hecht).
A key differentiating factor in the Red Bull Jukebox shows is the setlist, which is curated through fan voting. Fans offer their choices to a set of questions posted on the Red Bull Jukebox website and on artists’ socials, such as selecting whether they would prefer Brothers Osborne to play with a marching band or a bluegrass band, whether they would want to see Block covering hit songs from Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, Paramore or Riley Green, or if BRELAND should welcome one of his musical cohorts from the genres of country, hip-hop or songwriting as a guest. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote in-person during the show on Oct. 2 through using wristbands that will be distributed to attendees.
“It’s all going to be as much a surprise for us and the artists as it is for the people in the crowd,” Guenther said.
The event’s houseband will be led by celebrated Nashville musicians including ACM Award-winning guitarist-producer Derek Wells.
“It’s going to be fun to watch the artists do [their performances] on the fly,” Guenther says. “We’ve got a world-class band that’s backing up all the artists and they’re having to learn tons of songs so they can be prepared for whatever happens. But I think that is going to be a big part of the magic of this show. If you’ve seen everybody on the lineup, you’ve never seen this show.”

Since launching in 2011, Whiskey Jam has put on over 1,000 shows, spotlighting rising Nashville songwriters and artists, with Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll being among those who have appeared at Whiskey Jam over the years. The Red Bull Jukebox show’s similar mission was part of the appeal for Guenther.
“The focus on the upcoming artists is a big deal. As we’ve done in Nashville with Whiskey Jam, you have to have some kind of recognizable names to get people in the door, but the hope for this event, and the future of this event, is we are bringing the future of music,” Guenther said. “When you come and see a Red Bull Jukebox show, you’re getting a sampler of what’s to come. It’s been a great collaborative effort…it’s like Whiskey Jam magnified with the power of Red Bull.”
Red Bull Jukebox Nashville show will put rising artists in the spotlight—though in this case, one of those rising artists, Shaboozey, has seen his artist profile skyrocket since he signed on for the show.
“When we started the conversation with Shaboozey, he hadn’t even been featured on the Beyonce record [Cowboy Carter], and then when [“A Bar Song (Tipsy)”] came out, and he had that [packed show in the middle of downtown Nashville at] CMA Fest, we were like, ‘Wow, we’re about halfway to Red Bull Jukebox and this is already the response. We can’t wait for the October roll around.’”
Guenther says another Nashville-based Red Bull Jukebox show could be a possibility, as could holding Red Bull Jukebox concerts in other U.S. cities.
“You could do a Red Bull Jukebox event in a place like Miami that would be the polar opposite of the one we’re doing in Nashville. You could have one in Texas or New York and they would all feel completely different,” he says, adding, “I can see it repeating again [in Nashville] if it goes as well as we are expecting it to. And there’s room to grow with a lot of potential in Nashville for doing bigger, even completely different shows here.”

Red Bull BC One, the largest Breaking competition in the world, will make its return this year and the stakes remain as high as ever. Red Bull BC One just unveiled its 2024 United States competition schedule with the final taking place in Los Angeles.
Breaking has enjoyed quite a resurgence and much of that is due to the efforts of Red Bull BC One, which features B-Boys and B-Girls from around the globe taking on one another in a chance to represent their country for the world title. The art form that was created within the underground also enjoyed a moment in the mainstream after the 2024 Summer Olympics featured Breaking as an event.
Victor Montalvo, the bronze medalist for Team USA’s Breaking team on the men’s side, echoed the significance of Breaking being seen on the world stage in a statement.
“Before Paris, the biggest international breaking competition you wanted to win was Red Bull BC One, which has been around since 2004,” says two-time Red Bull BC One World Champion and Olympic medalist, Victor Montalvo, better known as B-Boy Victor. “Paris was the first look at competitive breaking for many people around the world, but the breaking scene has grown significantly since the 80’s. Red Bull BC One has not only played a pivotal role in my success and breaking journey, but it’s also the best event to tune into if you want a real look into the true spirit of the dance. I hope breaking’s new revival attracts even more fans to the competition.”

Hip-Hop Wired has the honor of attending past BC One events and we can attest to what B-Boy Victor expressed. The competition features some of the best dancers across the nation, and the connection within the community was beautiful to witness.
This year, the 2024 season will hold two “Regional Cyphers” serving as qualifying rounds for dancers and the winners of the qualifiers will then compete at the National Cypher in Los Angeles, which is officially the BC One National Championships event.
The first Cypher, Regional Cypher East, will take place in Philadelphia, Pa. on September 7, and the Regional Cypher West event takes place in Denver, Colo. on September 20th. Among the qualifiers will be specially invited dancers known as “wildcards” and winners of the Red Bull BC One City Cypher Series, several smaller local competitions that were held in Boston, Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis, and New York City.

A total of 16 B-Boys and eight B-Girls will face off at the Cypher East and Cypher West in the BC One’s usual bracket format featuring a panel of judges who are from the Breaking scene.

On Saturday, September 28, the BC One USA National Cypher will take place on the world-famous Venice Beach in California. The World Final will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on December 7.

Red Bull Dance Your Style, the all-styles dance competition returns to the dance floor this year via four regional qualifier events that start next month in the United States. This year, the global contest will host the World Final in India later this year.
Dance Your Style will host regional qualifiers in Chicago, Memphis, Boston, and Los Angeles before hosting the National Final in Atlanta. As always, the all-styles competition means just that as all dance styles will get a platform including breaking, house, footwork, popping, turfing, and more. How the dance competition stands out is that instead of planned routines, the competitors do their best to outdo each other while trying to win over the crowd, who stand as the judges in place of a panel before advancing to the next round.
One of the beautiful things about Dance Your Style is the fact dancers from all manner of backgrounds join together and show up for one another despite the competitive nature of the event. As 2022 USA champion David “The Crown” Stalter shares, this is an event for the community and a chance of a lifetime.
“Red Bull Dance Your Style is an essential platform for the dance community. It takes dance battles to the next level, giving dancers of any background a space to show off their unique style and connect with other artists from around the world. It’s a genuine celebration of different cultures,” The Crown shared in a statement. “It also allows the audience to appreciate the improvisational nature of battling and makes them feel like they are part of the experience through crowd voting.”
After the National Final in Atlanta, the winners from each of the various global competitions around the world will face off at the World Final in Mumbai, India in November. We’ll share the full schedule of United States qualifier events, along with ways to find out more about the competition below.

Red Bull Batalla, the largest Spanish-language freestyle competition in the world, concluded its 2023 season with Spain’s Chuty taking the world title. Applications are opening up for this year’s competition, and the stakes are even higher with new countries added to the mix.
Red Bull Batalla has opened its application channels from Feb. 19 until March 21, giving prospective battlers an opportunity of a lifetime. With 18 countries participating this year, which include the United States, Mexico, Spain, and regions across Central America, South America will also have its countries represented for the first time.
Participants can upload video submissions via the all-new Batalla app, which is available in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The submissions will be observed by veterans of the Spanish-speaking freestyle scene, along with experts from within the industry.
For the battlers that make it through, the MCs will face off in one-on-one freestyle battles via a bracket-style format with the winner advancing to the next level of competition.
Two Qualifier events will take place in the United States this summer before the Red Bull Batalla U.S. National Final, which takes place in Miami, Fla. this October. From there, winners of their respective country’s battles will go on to the Red Bull Batalla International Final, which will take place in Chuty’s hometown of Madrid, Spain.
Last year, talented battlers Oner and Reverse represented the United States in the World Finals in Bogotá, Colombia in 2023, which was the first time that’s ever happened. More of the same should be expected this year as well with the pool of Spanish Freestyle talent expanding year to year.

Red Bull Lords of the Floor, the renowned 2 vs. 2 breakdancing competition, will be returning in 2024. On Thursday, December 7, Red Bull announced the event will be going down on April 6 at the WaMu Theater in Seattle, Washington.

Seattle is where the event first took place in 2001, and 2024’s will feature the globe’s best breakers including 2024 Olympic dance athlete B-Boy Victor. The MC for the evening will be comedian Jo Koy, who was once a b-boy (always) himself.
“As a former b-boy, it is a true honor for me to host Red Bull Lords of the Floor, an event that has been so influential to the culture,” said Jo Koy in a statement. “While I look forward to reuniting with some of the crews who competed in the original Red Bull Lords of the Floor, what makes this reprise exciting is the international aspect of it. Red Bull will be flying in some of the best breakers in the world to compete, and we will all get to witness new history in the making.”
Lords Of The Floor is the successor to Red Bull BC One, and the former’s 2v2 format is credited with spawning the rise of breaking competitions, culminating with the art being part of the 2024 Summer Olympics. On tap for Red Bull Lords of the Floor 2024 will be breaking crews from the 90’s and that first 2001 event like Massive Monkees, Skill Methodz, and Style Elements, who will battle international competitors and be judged by a panel of veteran b-boys and b-girls,. All in all 16 teams of b-boys and b-girls will go for the title.

“The breaking scene has evolved so much in twenty-three years, and the return of Red Bull Lords of the Floor will be proof of that,” said Red Bull BC One All Star and 2021 B-Girl Champion Logan “Logistx” Edra in a statement. “We will get to witness some of the most dynamic, international pairings and watch OGs battle next-gen breakers who might have not even been around for the first event, myself included.”

Red Bull Culture Clash 2023 concluded near the top of the month in Atlanta, Ga., and the quartet of battle contestants consisted of DJ crews known for rocking across the “A” and around the world. Rum Brunch Punch emerged as the eventual champions of the clash, using the tried and true method of the Jamaican sound system clash style to wow the frenzied crowd.
Hip-Hop Wired was on hand to witness Red Bull Culture Clash 2023, which made its return to Atlanta after a five-year hiatus. It was our first time covering the event and we certainly hope it won’t be our last.
The energy inside the Gateway Center Arena in College Park was high as the aforementioned Rum Brunch Punch, Bamba Tuesdays, Perreo404, and Mashup Sessions positioned themselves on their respective stages armed with special guests, surprise dubplates, and orchestrated routines.
Much like the Jamaican sound clashes of old where “sounds” or DJ sound systems would go to audio war with another sound, using the roar of the crowd in attendance to determine a winner, the Red Bull affair adopted this approach. Hosted by Paige Shari and Jessie Woo, the energetic hosts oversaw the clash over the course of four rounds with the crews getting eight minutes each to rep their sound.
Andre “Dreggae” Ruddock and Allan “Boom” Williams masterminded their winning set with the assistance of Tony Matterhorn, Troopa Traloopa, Shane Talon, Willy Chin the Remix King, DJ Jabba, Sir DJ Corey, Nasheen Fire, and DJ Prince Charm displayed a unified front as they took the stage dressed in military-style fatigues and unleashing a barrage of haymakers by rolling out dancehall artists Serani, who was listed on the bill, along with Vanessa Bling, Teejay, Aidonia, Govana, and Mr. Lexx. Another highlight of the Rum Brunch Punch set was the crew featuring violinist Mapy.
Respect should be given to Bamba Tuesdays with DJ Kash alongside Afro B providing a game set of tunes and performance while representing the rising amapiano sound while also keeping things true to Atlanta and its diverse community. During an intense third-round set, Wayne Wonder joined the Bamba Tuesdays stage and delighted the unsuspecting crowd.
Mashup Sessions repped the A’s rich Hip-Hop culture although at one point, the crew played a dubplate response record from Beres Hammond, just to keep the vibes as close to a clash as possible. Young Nudy was the listed performer and rocked his “Peaches and Eggplants” hit while TrillVille hit the stage with their “Neva Eva” smash. DJs Unruely and The Canterbury Talez also brought out buzzing Memphis spitter Gloss Up to drop her “Shabooya” in a surprise moment.
Perreo404 put on for the city’s Latin community and rocked a set that bounced around from Hip-Hop, reggaeton, and several sounds in between. DJ EU, who is Atlanta United’s official DJ, had assistance from DJ Luian Johnny Juelz and singer Nino Augustine. The crew also brought out “Roscoe Dash” to drop his verse from “No Hands.”
As it stands, the crowd went up for all their faves but Rum Brunch Punch proved to win the entire arena over with their sets, even with technical difficulties taking away some of their precious moments. It mattered little as the crew improvised like any good sound system might have to do in such times and emerged victorious.
After the clash, we briefly spoke with Willy Chin and Tony Matterhorn, legends of the dancehall and DJ scenes, along with Troopa. With all the confidence that surely was sparked by their exceptional win, the trio saluted their competition but felt like they had too much power.
“I’ve been around the world spinning records and joining clashes and to bring this style of clash to Atlanta was definitely a vibe we were glad to bring,” Willy Chin shared before rushing off and relishing in the wind.
Troopa added, “The way the crowd embraced us and showed love proved that the Carribean influence is strong here in Atlanta and across the world.”
Tony Matterhorn concluded the energy of the night stating, “We knew that when we came in here we were going to win. This was not an accident, we played the part and we got the win.”

Red Bull Culture Clash, an event inspired by the “soundclash” battle scene first popularized in Jamaica, will make its return to Atlanta next month and will feature four popular crews facing off for the title of winner. With the clashing quartet highlighting the sounds of Dancehall, Reggaeton, Amapiano, and Hip-Hop, the crews will be assisted in their respective genres with notable fixtures of the scene.
On November 4, Rum Punch Brunch, Mashup Sessions, Bamba Tuesdays, and Perreo404, all known for throwing some of the hottest parties throughout Atlanta, will face off at the Gateway Center Arena with a special performance lined up.
Rum Punch Brunch, with DJs Tony Matterhorn and Willy Chin, will feature during its set Jamaican dancehall artist and producer Serani, Mashup Sessions will bring Young Nudy onstage with DJs Unruely and The Canterbury Tales. Bamba Tuesdays will take the stage with Afro B, with DJs Kash, DangerVybz, and Polish providing the sounds, and Perreo404 will be joined by Bad Bunny collaborator DJ Luian with assistance from DJ EU and Nino Augustine.
Along with the Red Bull Culture Clash featured crews, Atlanta legends Crime Mob will put on a performance with original members Diamond, Lil’ Jay, M.I.G., Money Blacc (Cyco Blacc), and Princess. Serving as hosts will be Jessie Woo and Paige Shari and DJ Jay Shale will provide the vibes for fans before and between sets.
Red Bull Culture Clash first kicked off in Atlanta in 2017 and returned the following year with Dancehall crew Unruly winning the battle in its first year with Frequent Fliers taking the title in 2018. The event returned to the States last year with events held in New York and Los Angeles.
“Super excited to be a part of Red Bull Culture Clash this year because I’ve been a team member a few years back with Mike WiLL (Made-It) and the Eardrummers. Now it’s time to lead the charge for my own team,” DJ Kash of Bamba Tuesdays said in a statement. “Red Bull Culture Clash is like a legit gladiator battle for DJs, producers, and whatever you do creatively in the music. For me, this is super important because this lets you know where you stand as far as how to rock a crowd.”
“Red Bull Culture Clash is an important event in Atlanta because it highlights all the people that are doing movements in the city of Atlanta – that are really putting on for the culture of the city and showcasing all the vibes and sounds of our cultures,” added DJ EU, who won Red Bull 3Style in Atlanta in 2013. “Red Bull Culture Clash takes me back to my Red Bull 3Style battling days, but this time it’s not one person – it’s the crew and I could not be happier to be repping the Latinos in Atlanta with my Perreo404 crew.”
