The 2024 nominations are led by Maluma with 14 nods, followed by Peso Pluma (13), Grupo Frontera (10) and, with nine each, Karol G and Feid. Ana Barbara, Don Omar and Olga Tañon will receive this year’s Premio Lo Nuestro a la Trayectoria, Global Icon and Premio Lo Nuestro a la Excelencia special awards, respectively.

The 2024 awards ceremony will be co-hosted by Galilea Montijo, Clarissa Moline and Angélica Vale and will air live at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday via Univision.

Below, check out some of the best highlights from the rehearsals on Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 21).

Ana Barbara’s Career Celebration

Ahead of receiving the 2024 Premio Lo Nuestro a la Trayectoria award, Ana Bárbara revealed how she prepared for the exciting medley of hits she will perform Thursday night. “We sat down as a team and asked ourselves what we wanted to share in terms of emotions, in terms of rhythm and songs,” she notes. “After thinking about it a lot, they chose one from each era that was written by different composers […] and came up with that cocktail of songs that will take us to different dimensions.”

Gente de Zona announce new album

Though Alexander Delgado and Randy Malcom are releasing solo music, the Cuban artists known as the duo Gente de Zona arrived together to rehearsals promoting their upcoming project and to assure that they are not separating. In fact, an album is in the works, filled with positive and feel-good music.

“It’s the type of content that made Gente de Zona an international duo,” Malcom notes. “I think there are many problems in the world. Social media has caused well-being but also many problems. It’s about enjoying the moment, enjoying life and time, which is what you can’t buy.”

Delgado adds: “This album is a lot of fun with the Gente de Zona stamp. We are very happy and we hope you all enjoy it.” The duo has yet to reveal the release date but promise that their special performance on Thursday will be a preview of what fans can expect.

Wisin Enters the Música Mexicana Realm

Backstage, Wisin revealed that his new single dropping this week is called “Un Shot” alongside Gabito Ballesteros — further proving that urban and Mexican music are the perfect match. “For us urban artists, it was a dream to enter Mexico and receive the support of all Mexicans,” the reggaeton star says. “More than a fusion with Gabito Ballestero and a rich song, musically speaking, it is a tribute to the people of Mexico and a way to enter their world and let them know that we respect what they do, respect their music.” The music video, Wisin notes, was filmed in Puerto Rico.

Banda MS’ Biggest Tour Secret

Banda MS has paused their tour to attend the 2024 Premio Lo Nuestro, where they are five-time nominees and will also have a special performance. After their Premios commitment, they will hit the road again, which had us wondering: What’s their biggest secret to having so much energy on tour?

“It’s the discipline, the desire to keep growing, the desire to go ahead, our family, our fans. All of that, and more, injects you with a lot of adrenaline, a lot of energy,” vocalist Alan Ramírez explains.

“Banda music has something very peculiar…most of the bands were born on the street,” vocalist Oswaldo “Walo” Carreón adds. “We are the bands that go to the restaurants, the cantinas, trying to get clients. I’ve personally performed 20 hours in a day… and all that suits you is giving resistance. So the three-hour show seems like a breeze.”

Los Ilegales celebrate 30 years

Los Ilegales are ready to inject viewers on Thursday with the ultimate throwback performance — and what better timing than on the year of their 30th anniversary? “It’s a gift from God who allows us to live our 30th anniversary,” lead singer Vladimir Dotel tells Billboard. “It’s also the discipline, the love for our career that allows us to be with you. If it weren’t for that, we wouldn’t be here. We’ve been awarded for our unattainable work and that is why we promise to literally rock the stage.” The Dominican group also remembered the first time they attended Premio Lo Nuestro in 1996, where they won new artist of the year.

After joining forces with Keith Urban for the new Zorro series soundtrack, Carin León continues tapping into the country music realm by teaming up with Kane Brown for his next collaboration, Billboard can reveal.

Marking León and Brown’s first collaborative effort, the pair will premiere their new single “The One (Pero No Como Yo)” on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 2024 Premio Lo Nuestro. The title indicates the song will be a heartfelt Spanglish bop. This also marks Brown’s second Latin effort after dropping “Lost in the Middle of Nowhere” with Becky G in 2019.

“After I recorded the song with Carin, he invited me to join him at the awards show to do the performance,” Brown tells Billboard exclusively. “I have never attended Premio Lo Nuestro, so I’m a little nervous and very excited … I see so many similarities between our fans and I’m incredibly grateful to be able to share my style of music with his fans and share Carin’s style of music with my fans.”

Mexican power couple Kimberly Loaiza and JD Pantoja, who’ve been together since 2012 and have two children together, had a lot to celebrate at the 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro on Thursday night (Feb. 23).

“I feel very proud,” Loaiza said of her new female artist nomination. “My fans, Las Linduras, were the ones to give me the news. They’re always paying attention to everything. When I got the news, I thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe it.’” (Later in the night, Loaiza won the award, where she was up against strong contenders including Tokischa, Lola Indigo, Corina Smith, Young Miko, Lola Indigo and many more.)

On the carpet, the couple shared exclusive news about their upcoming music projects.

“We’ve got news — it’s kind of bad for the fans, but we’re going to release our last collaboration together soon,” Pantoja tells Billboard.

Loaiza and Pantoja, two influencers-turned-artists, have released many collaborations in the past, but each has their individual career.

“My album is coming,” assures Loaiza, “and more collaborations with Argentinean and Puerto Rican artists. In April, I’ll release one of those songs.”

“I also have a song with a reggaeton legend from Puerto Rico that will soon, soon come out. I filmed the video not that long ago and it came out great,” Pantoja states of his upcoming feature.

Next month, the married couple will tour together, for the last time, on their Bye Bye Tour, visiting the U.S. for the first time. Produced by Loud and Live, the trek will visit four U.S. cities, kicking off March 31 in Chicago and winding through New York, Houston and Los Angeles.

The 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro awards are a wrap. The 35th annual ceremony, held Thursday (Feb. 23) in Miami, honored artists such as Ivy Queen, Victor Manuelle and Intocable for their extraordinary careers, and also awarded artist of the year to Karol G, and album of the year went to Bad Bunny for his history-making Un Verano Sin Ti. The big winner of the night was Grupo Firme; the norteño-banda group took home six awards.

Only a few of the categories were televised. Mainly, the three-hour show consisted of back-to-back performances, with a total of 20 musical numbers taking place throughout the night. The ceremony kicked off with Sebastián Yatra, who performed his new single, “Una Noche Sin Pensar.” A new generation of urban artists such as Tiago PZK, Elena Rose and Alvaro Diaz — representing a distinct scene from across the Spanish-speaking continent — also took the stage.

Carlos Rivera performed a heartfelt and powerful rendition of the ballad “Sincerándome,” which is part of his recently released album of the same name. He was then joined by the great Ricardo Montaner to sing their new collab, “Yo No Fumo,” Montaner’s new single that is set to be released in March. “We wanted everyone to hear it now,” he told Billboard. “I’m full of excitement because I’m back to releasing new music.”

Another standout performance was Maluma and Marc Anthony‘s “La Formula,” which they performed for the first time on television. The Colombian crooner began his set offstage on a round table occupied by beautiful women, and he lit up a cigar while looking melancholic. Then salsa legend Anthony entered the scene, and the vibrant rhythm exploded into a dazzling tropical frenzy.

Of the many performances, which was your favorite of the night? Vote in the poll below:

Billboard compiled a list of things we observed at the 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro — whether on the magenta carpet, backstage at the media center or during the show — that were not aired on TV.

Read on for what viewers at home didn’t get to see:

1. Yahritza y Su Esencia won their first-ever Premio Lo Nuestro award for Regional Mexican – Sierreña Song of the Year for their 2022 hit “Soy El Unico.” Backstage at the media center, an emotional Yahritza hugged her brother Jairo and shed tears of excitement. She said she never had faith in the song because she was only 13 years old when she wrote it, and finally, dedicated the award to her older brother Mando, who’s currently living in Mexico.

2. Before winning their award, Yahritza y Su Esencia shared some exciting news with Billboard on the magenta carpet. The Mexican-American siblings not only announced their plans to tour in 2023, but also revealed a collaboration with Grupo Frontera is in the works. “It’s going to make you dance,” Yahritza says.

3. When receiving the award for Regional Mexican – New Artist, Carin León surprised the press by singing an unreleased song. “A la semanas de iniciar con la aventura/ Se nos hizo miel la luna y un concierto pa’ tijuana/ Era prohibido, era imposible pero hicimos lo que se nos dio la gana,” the artist passionately sang.

4. After receiving the coveted Premio Lo Nuestro a la Trayectoria (Trajectory Award), Victor Manuelle headed to the press room, where he gushed over his first and newborn granddaughter, and said his award is dedicated to her. He then expressed he will display his trophy in her pink and flower-themed room.

5. Backstage, Grupo Firme, who was the evening’s biggest winner with six awards, surprised the press when lead singer Eduin Caz confirmed his separation from his wife and the mother of his kids. “I want to dedicate these awards, more than anything, to my wife, who’s been a real support in my life and she deserves them. I’m always going to love you,” the artist shared.

6. Prince Royce keeps all of his awards in his closet! When receiving the award for Tropical – Collaboration of the Year for his Maria Becerra-assisted “Te Espero,” the Dominican artist admitted to having all of his awards in his “very nice and very spacious closet.” Royce collected his 21st Premio Lo Nuestro Award at the ceremony.

7. Serenatas galore! Many artists stopped by the Billboard spot on the magenta carpet to not only talk about upcoming projects, but also sing for us! Artists such as Fuerza Regida, Gusi, Grupo Frontera, and La Adictiva, to name a few, sang some tunes.

The 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro — themed “El Mundo Es Lo Nuestro” (or The World Is Ours) — was co-hosted by Colombian pop star Sebastian Yatra, Mexican TV presenter and actress Alejandra Espinoza, Mexican superstar Paulina Rubio and Adrián Uribe of Univision’s late-night show De Noche Pero Sin Sueño. Grupo Firme was the night’s biggest winner with six awards, followed by other top winners such as Sebastian Yatra and Karol G.

After launching his Piano y Mujer series — which kicked off in 2021 via an HBO Max special — Arthur Hanlon returned with reggaeton royalty Ivy Queen. He was also joined by ranchera singer Lupita Infante, and Colombian vocalist Goyo of ChocQuibTown fame.

The maestro began his set playing a beautiful melody as Goyo made her way to center stage. The ChocQuibTown frontwoman sparkled in a fuchsia dress as she sang the tropical classic “Gotas de Lluvia,” originally sung by her hometown heroes, salsa band Grupo Niche.

The staging was something to behold, as Lupita Infante then made her way to the mic. Wearing a gorgeous black Mexican dress with colorful embroidered flowers, the granddaughter of Pedro Infante belted out “Si No Estás Tú,” the Spanish versión of “Without You,” originally by Harry Nilsson.

Hanlon — who appeared in a white suit and silk blazer jacket with a floral imprint — provided impressive piano riffs that resonated from his grand Yamaha piano, adorned with red roses. Sweeping violins further amplified the night filled with musical passion.

Up next, Ivy Queen showcased her singing versatility, belting out one of the most yearning love ballads in Latin pop history, “Ya Te Olvidé,” or “I Have Forgotten You,” a classic originally sung by Yurida and written by Marco Antonio Solís.

“When we filmed the first Piano y Mujer, it was like a tribute and a celebration of strong, intelligent and creative women, like the women in my home,” Hanlon previously told Billboard Español. “I’m extremely proud.”

Earlier in the night, La Caballota delivered a masterclass on reggaeton at Premio Lo Nuestro, where connected the audience with decades of Ivy Queen hits.

The 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro, which is themed “El Mundo Es Lo Nuestro” (or The World is Ours), is co-hosted by Colombian pop star Sebastian Yatra, Mexican TV presenter and actress Alejandra Espinoza, Mexican superstar Paulina Rubio, and Adrián Uribe of Univision’s late-night show De Noche Pero Sin Sueño.

Yatra tops this year’s nominations with 10 nods including the all-genre artist of the year category. He’s closely followed by other top nominees Bad Bunny, Camilo, Becky G, and Grupo Firme, who each have nine nods; Maluma, Daddy Yankee, and Ozuna with eight each; power couple Rauw Alejandro and Rosalía tie with seven, as well as Carin León, Karol G, Carlos Vives, and J Balvin. In total, 192 artists across diverse musical backgrounds are nominated within 39 categories.

The nominations for the fan-voted Premio Lo Nuestro are based on Uforia radio airplay during the eligibility period of Oct. 1, 2021 through Sept. 30, 2022. Streaming counts and the assessment of a committee of music and entertainment experts also factor in this list.

On Thursday (Feb. 23), Christian Nodal and Tini transformed Premio Lo Nuestro into a crimson-lit, passion-filled scene with burning candles and fire pits. Together, they sang “Por El Resto de Tu Vida.” Leading with twinkling bolero arpeggio, the mariacheño trailblazer and Argentine pop singer matched hearts as their voices collided to make one of the sweetest of love songs of the year so far.

The scene at the Latin music awards ceremony was spectacular. Nodal first appeared singing the cumbia-mariachi song “Un Cumbión Dolido,” where he sat on a medieval-like center chair and vintage table with chains and fruit on top. He achieved rustic elegance, donning a bronze vest and jeans, with a silk black shirt and his usual cowboy hat and buckle. Tini, on the other hand, looked pristine in white and sheer gloves that sparkled. Together they dazzled.

Nodal continued to experiment within the confines of regional Mexican music, and Tini was a great singing partner to enhance that sound.

Additionally, Yatra tops the nominations with 10 nods including the all-genre artist of the year category.

1, 2021, through Sept. 30, 2022. Streaming counts and the assessment of a committee of music and entertainment experts also factor into this list. The 35th annual award show is broadcasting live on Thursday, Feb. 23 via Univision and simulcasting on Galavisión in the U.S. and Canal 5 in Mexico.
