Olivia Rodrigo Takes a Bite Out of Sophomore Slump With ‘GUTS’-y Lead Single ‘Vampire’

It had been more than two years since we’d heard new music from Olivia Rodrigo, but that all changed first thing Friday when she released “Vampire,” the lead single from her Sept. 8-scheduled sophomore album GUTS.

In a tight, under-four-minute package, the melodramatic new song transitions from a “Drivers License”-style piano ballad to a My Chemical Romance-indebted popera, telling the story of a life-sucking user who won’t be satisfied until their victim is bled dry. On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are talking all about Rodrigo’s new era, how she’s making deft maneuvers to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, and why it’s exciting to see the young pop star turn a song (and its artsy music video premiere) into a big event.

Also on the show, we’ve got chart news on Morgan Wallen’s continued domination on the Billboard 200 (and how he’s now blocked 11 different albums from hitting No. 1) and how Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and AQUA have teamed up for a new top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Barbie World.” Plus, we’re discussing the scary news out of Team Madonna last week, when the Queen of Pop was hospitalized for a serious bacterial infection and forced to pause the start of her upcoming Celebration Tour.

“Thank you @taylorswift for the MOST INCREDIBLE night last night‼️??” the actress began her post. “Your talent is immeasurable and your generosity boundless. Thank you for sharing it all with the world. You bring endless joy and inspiration to many, including me.”

The National musician was one of two special guests that night, with opener Gracie Abrams taking the stage to sing her breakout single “I Miss You, I’m Sorry” with Swift.

“It’s bloody brilliant seeing you having the time of your life up there,” Collette added. “We’ll never forget it. Brava lady! ???????????? #sheisher #erastour ?”

Rihanna Celebrates Making Spotify History ‘Wit No New Album’

Don’t let the focus on motherhood and her business empires fool you — Rihanna definitely has not forgotten that she’s one of the biggest music artists of all time, and neither should fans. The Grammy winner took to Instagram recently to share a graphic of her latest record-breaking achievement that Spotify later confirmed: On July 1, Rihanna became the first female artist to have 10 songs reach one billion streams in Spotify history.

“Bad Gal billi,” Rihanna captioned her post. “wit no new album… lemme talk my s–t!”

Rihanna has infamously yet to release the follow-up to her last studio album, 2016’s Billboard 200-topping Anti. Although Riri is keeping fans waiting for the album, she has returned to music in small doses. Last year she released two songs for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack: “Born Again” and “Lift Me Up,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Earlier this year, the Bajan singer headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which included a reveal of her second pregnancy.

Rihanna’s billion-streams club songs on Spotify are “Diamonds,” “We Found Love” (with Calvin Harris), “Love on the Brain,” “Stay” (with Mikky Ekko), “This Is What You Came For” (with Calvin Harris), “Needed Me,” “Four Five Seconds” (with Kanye West & Paul McCartney), “Work” (with Drake), “Umbrella” (with Jay-Z) and “Love the Way You Lie” (with Eminem).

“She is recovering at home – she is very strong in general,” O’Donnell replied to one fan. Billboard also confirmed on Thursday (June 28) that the pop icon is at home and feeling better.

Guy Oseary revealed on Instagram earlier in the week that Madonna spent a few days in the ICU after she developed a “serious bacterial infection” on June 24. “Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care,” Oseary wrote. “A full recovery is expected.”

Despite her current recovery, the hospitalization has forced Madge to put her massive, career-spanning Celebration tour on pause for the time being. “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour,” Oseary wrote in his post. “We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”

Hugh Grant Reveals He’s a ‘Rabid Blink’ After Attending BLACKPINK Concert

Hugh Grant is officially hooked on that pink venom. After seeing BLACKPINK perform, the 62-year-old Golden Globe winner took to Twitter to announce his new place among the BLINKs’ ranks.

“Very grateful to three eleven year olds for taking me to see @BLACKPINK yesterday,” the film star tweeted Monday (July 3). “Am rabid Blink now. Slept with my heart hammer.”

In the comments, the girl group’s fanbase was eager to welcome Grant with open arms. “welcome to the family ??,” replied @BLACKPINKGLOBAL, which is followed by more than a million BLINKs.

“Welcome to our family,” echoed @BLACKPINKMXCO, a community account for fans in Mexico.

The Notting Hill actor was in attendance at Rosé, Jisoo, Lisa and Jennie’s BST Hyde Park concert in London Sunday night (July 2), as evidenced by his tweet and in photos and videos taken of him at the show. One video shows Grant, who shares 11-year-old daughter Tabitha with ex-partner Tinglan Hong, wearing an official Born Pink hoodie.

BLACKPINK is currently touring the globe in support of its 2022 album, Born Pink, with upcoming shows in France and Vietnam. In August, the K-pop stars will plow through four cities in the U.S. — East Rutherford, N.J.; Las Vegas; San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Fans were pleased to see Jennie looking happy and healthy on stage at the Hyde Park show, just a few short weeks after she had to leave the stage in the midst of a BLACKPINK concert in Melbourne due to health issues. Afterward, the Idol star apologized to fans in a message. “I’m doing my best to recover [at the moment],” she wrote. “Your understanding and support means the world to me.”

Taylor Swift Reminds Fans to Pre-Save ‘Speak Now’ in New Video: ‘The Next Chapter Begins…’

Time is ticking down before Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) finally arrives this Friday (July 7), and Taylor Swift is here to remind you to pre-save the record.

In a Monday (July 3) exclusive video for Spotify, the 33-year-old pop star looked like she’d come straight out of 2010, wearing a whimsical green sundress and a long necklace, her hair in a fishtail side braid. “Hey! It’s Taylor Swift,” she said, seated in front of a purple backdrop and flickering purple candles.

“The next chapter begins on July 7, when Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) comes out,” she continued, smiling at the camera. “You can pre-save it now on Spotify.”

The video can be found on Swift’s “Upcoming releases” page on the music streaming app, which links fans to a timer counting down to release day, the record’s full tracklist and physical copies of the record available for purchase on the “Anti-Hero” singer’s website. Previously, Swift filmed a video for the Spotify page giving fans a peek at one of the magical purple vinyl discs and its accompanying poster.

Featuring re-recorded versions of all 14 of Speak Now‘s original tracks and six previously unreleased songs “From the Vault,” the fast-approaching project will mark the third of six planned “Taylor’s Version” albums. In 2021, Swift dropped both Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), leaving her 2006 self-titled debut, 2014’s 1989 and 2017’s Reputation as the only albums left in the re-recording process.

Last week, Swifties got a taste of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) when “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” was featured in a new The Summer I Turned Pretty season two trailer, which also included the Grammy winner’s Folklore fan-favorite “August.” The new season arrives on Prime Video exactly one week after Swift’s album, following a first season that included several other Swift tracks (“False God,” “Cruel Summer,” “This Love,” “The Way I Loved You” and more).

In June, Swift laid down some rules ahead of the album’s release at an Eras Tour show in Minneapolis. Just before performing “Dear John,” a scathing Speak Now ballad widely believed to be about her ex-boyfriend John Mayer, the Grammy winner asked fans not to spread hate online on her behalf.

“I’m 33 years old,” she told the crowd. “I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19. I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”

From Taylor Swift to Olivia Rodrigo: 21 of the Most Anticipated Sophomore Albums by 21st Century Pop Stars

As Olivia Rodrigo officially kicks off the campaign for Guts, her second studio album, Billboard looks back on 21 of the most anticipated sophomore pop albums of the 21st century.

The second album is always tricky territory for artists, especially for stars whose debut records were critical and commercial successes. The “sophomore slump” — a phrase that refers to the phenomenon where an artist’s second album fails to live up to the heights set by their first — is a term that is often thrown around in music conversations. Although the phrase is sometimes used incorrectly, it remains a helpful way to discuss and analyze the commercial and artistic progression, or lack thereof, of an artist.

Grammy-winning pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo is currently gearing up for what is arguably the most anticipated sophomore album of the young decade. Rodrigo’s debut, the Billboard 200-topping Sour, spawned two Hot 100 No. 1 singles, garnered billions of on-demand streams, and earned acclaim from critics and fans alike. With the release of her new single “Vampire,” all eyes are on Rodrigo as she officially kicks off the campaign for Guts, out Sept. 8, 2023. Rodrigo isn’t alone among pop stars getting ready to release their sophomore album: Fans are also still eagerly awaiting sophomore records from the likes of Cardi B, Omar Apollo, Tate McRae and Lil Nas X.

Although Guts is understandably on everyone’s minds, it is only the latest example of a sophomore album that has captivated the pop music scene. From B’Day, Beyoncé’s follow-up to her blockbuster debut solo album, to 21, Adele’s historic follow-up to her Grammy-nominated 2008 debut, the 21st century has offered pop audiences a litany of sophomore albums that have premiered to varying degrees of success and acclaim. While some records fold under the pressure and others turn that anticipation into record-breaking numbers, they all embody the peculiar position of the sophomore album.

Below, Billboard reflects on 21 of the most anticipated pop star sophomore albums of the 21st century.

Kentucky Couple’s Engagement During ‘Love Story’ at Taylor Swift Cincinnati Eras Tour Show Goes Viral: ‘Best Day Ever’

A Kentucky man’s proposal to his girlfriend during one of Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour shows in Cincinnati over the weekend has blown up. It might have something to do with Tyler Browne’s perfect timing in popping the question to his girlfriend and avowed Swiftie, Ana Stone.

According to WKRC, Browne scored a pair of floor tickets for the Friday night show with a secret plan in place to pop the question during “Love Story.” In fact, he said he spent a month-and-a-half memorizing the words to the fan-favorite Fearless hit so he could hit just the right note when getting down on his knee during the section where Swift sings, “He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said, ‘Marry Me, Juliet, you’ll never have to be alone.’”

“I texted on my phone in my notes, ‘Hey, would you guys please help me? I’m going to propose to my girlfriend during ‘Love Story,’ and everyone around me, the band rallied, and we got the thing done,” Browne told WKRC about his plan to enlist some adjacent Swifties into his surprise Swift-posal.

Browne said he was keeping an eye on the set list the whole night, counting down on his phone until the big moment finally came nine songs into the show. “I’m like, ‘Please don’t mess this up,’” he said of his nervousness. Luckily, things went off without a hitch, with those around the couple getting a sneaky thumbs up behind his back when the moment was at hand.

“He wouldn’t look at me until that part of the song, and I was wondering why he would not make eye contact with me or look at me,” Stone said. “Everybody screaming around us when everyone turned to face us. I will never forget that because it was so precious.”

“She said yes, thank gosh. It was the best day ever,” Browne told the station. “It was the best day ever,” Stone seconded. The station reported that the original video has more than 400,000 likes to date and has been viewed more than 2.5 million times.

It wasn’t the only unexpected moment during that night’s show, which also included an unplanned bit where Swift was forced to sprint to a main stage secret door after a trap door on the thrust stage failed to open.

Check out a fan video of the proposal below.

Taylor Swift Had the Perfect Reaction to Video of Her Cincinnati Eras Tour Stage Malfunction Sprint

Taylor Swift has battled rain, bugs and swampy summer heat over the course of the first four months of her Eras Tour. And, as you’d expect, she handled all those challenges with her typical aplomb.

So it was not surprising that the singer also had a brush-the-dirt-off-your-shoulder response to a stage malfunction during the first night of her two-night stand at Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium on Friday. In a fan video, Swift was seen squaring up to a spot on the stage that was supposed to feature a trap door for her to escape to make a quick-change.

But after stomping her foot and realizing it wasn’t going to open, Swift reacted quickly and busted into a dead sprint toward the huge video screen at the back of the stage, rushing past several dancers as she ducked into an opening. The moment went viral over the weekend and Taylor had the perfect response to the hiccup in a comment on a fan’s TikTok of the incident.

“Still swift af boi,” she wrote.

It wasn’t the only unexpected moment during the sold-out pair of shows in the Queen City. Swift also treated fans to the first triple surprise song set of the Eras era, busting out the debut of two Evermore songs during her acoustic set, as well as inviting planned opener Gracie Abrams on stage to sing her song “I Miss You, I’m Sorry” after Abrams’ performance was scratched after the threat of possible dangerous weather pushed showtime up by an hour.

She also hosted hometown hero and frequent collaborator Aaron Dessner of The National for the stage debut of the Evermore song “Ivy.”
