Olivia Rodrigo is ready to spill her guts. On Monday (June 26), the 20-year-old pop star gave fans a surprise by announcing that her highly anticipated sophomore record is arriving later this year, unveiling the cover art and title in the meantime. “my sophomore album GUTS comes out september 8th,” Rodrigo captioned the announcement on […]

When you’re a critically acclaimed artist and your sister is one of the world’s biggest pop stars, what songs do you let loose and belt your heart out to? For Solange and Beyoncé, the answer is “Love” by Keyshia Cole. On Sunday (June 25), Solange posted a series of videos on Instagram in celebration of […]

Lewis Capaldi returned to the stage for Glastonbury after taking a break to “rest and recover” over the past few weeks, and his return was aided by his fans.
As he closed his festival set with chart-topper “Someone You Loved” this weekend, he appeared to be affected by involuntary movements and could not fully perform the song on his own. No worries, though: The audience stepped in where he left off.

Capaldi has been candid about diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome, which is a neurological disorder involving sudden repetitive movements or unwanted tics. In April, he revealed it might eventually force him to quit music altogether.

“My tic is getting quite bad on stage now,” Capaldi said in an interview with The Times that month. “I’m trying to get on top of that. If I can’t, I’m f—ed. It’s easier when I play guitar, but I hate playing guitar. I know, I’m a walking contradiction.”

“It’s only making music that does this to me,” he told the publication. “Otherwise I can be fine for months at a time. So it’s a weird situation. Right now, the trade-off is worth it.”

“But if it gets to a point where I’m doing irreparable damage to myself, I’ll quit,” Capaldi added at the time. “I hate hyperbole, but it is a very real possibility that I will have to pack music in.”

In early June, Capaldi canceled gigs in Glasgow, Dublin, London and Norway in a message that he said “hurts me a lot to have to type.”

He wrote, “The last few months have been full on both mentally and physically, I haven’t been home properly since Christmas and at the moment I’m struggling to get to grips with it all. I need to take a moment to rest and recover, to be at my best and ready for Glastonbury and all of the other incredible shows coming up so that I’m able to continue doing what I love for a long time to come.”

“Someone You Loved” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart in 2019. Capaldi recently released his sophomore studio album, Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent.

“13 days til we return Speak Now to its mother,” Swift wrote on social media, where she posted a sneak peek of her upcoming release.

An audio clip of the re-recorded album’s opening track, “Mine,” plays as Swift casually takes a look at a new Speak Now release on vinyl, holds it up, and peeps at the camera from behind the purple record.

A “Mine” lyric fit for this very moment is heard: “You are the best thing that’s ever been mine.”

The Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) vinyl Swift shows off appears to be the orchid marbled variation, available to order from her webstore for $38.99. There is also a violet marbled version on her webstore, plus a lilac marbled design that’s exclusive to Target.

Swift first announced that Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) will be arriving on July 7 during a concert at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on May 5. Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is the third re-recorded album she’s releasing, following Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021. She’s still on her Eras Tour trek, with stops in Minneapolis this weekend, and just announced international tour dates.

On her May 5 social media reveal of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) she wrote, “It fills me with such pride and joy to announce that my version of Speak Now will be out July 7 (just in time for July 9th, iykyk. I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing … and living to speak about it. With six extra songs I’ve sprung loose from the vault, I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) with you on July 7th.”

At the time Swift added, “I always looked at this album as my album, and the lump in my throat expands to a quivering voice as I say this. Thanks to you, dear reader, it finally will be. I consider this music to be, along with your faith in me, the best thing that’s ever been mine.”

The Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) tracklist features six (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault) songs that were not on 2010’s Speak Now album: “Electric Touch” feat. Fall Out Boy, “When Emma Falls in Love,” “I Can See You,” “Castles Crumbling” feat. Hayley Williams, “Foolish One” and “Timeless.”

Adele is asking her Las Vegas audience to weigh in on the tragic Titanic submersible story.
The British songstress paused her residency show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Friday (June 23) to ask concert-goers whether they’d visit the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean if given the opportunity.

In a fan-captured TikTok video, the “Easy on Me” singer began the question by noting that the deadly implosion of OceanGate’s Titan vessel was “so sad and so tragic.”

“But I have been debating with my friends on our group chats. Everyone’s like, ‘I would never do that.’ But that’s a lie, ’cause a lot of people would do that,” Adele told the crowd. “I want do a vote — not in mind of what happened, ’cause that was so sad and so tragic — but before this week, how many people would, if they could, would go down to the very, very bottom of the ocean to see the Titanic? Raise your hands.”

Not surprisingly, many attendees cheered loudly in favor of not seeing the Titanic wreckage under water. The 35-year-old then upped the ante by asking whether they’d be interested in flying to outer space.

“I wouldn’t do it either but only because I’m a bit of a p—-. I’m a scaredy cat of everything,” Adele said. “I wouldn’t even go on roller coasters. But also, I just genuinely don’t have an interest in the deep sea or space, so that’s why.”

Earlier in the week, news broke that the five passengers aboard the 21-foot submersible Titan were presumed dead following a “catastrophic implosion,” according to Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger.

In 2018, Adele celebrated her 30th birthday in blockbuster style with a Titanic-themed bash. Photos from the celebration showed the diva standing at the top of an elaborate Titanic-style staircase and donning glittering gown with her hair curled into tight ringlets à la Kate Winslet’s character Rose in the epic 1997 romance-disaster film.

“Thank you to everyone for coming along for the ride the last 11 years with me. My family and friends for entertaining my super fandom of the Titanic movie. Last night was the best night of my life,” Adele captioned her Instagram post.

Kim Petras has Britney Spears to thank for a lot more than her pop-music influence. During an appearance on the TODAY show in promotion of her debut album Feed the Beast, which dropped Friday (June 23), the German pop star shared that she learned to speak English in part by watching videos of the Princess of Pop.
Petras performed a live concert showcasing the new record in New York City Friday morning as part of the long-running NBC morning show’s 2023 Citi Concert Series. While onstage, the “Unholy” singer was asked by hosts Hoda Kotb and Al Roker about her rise to stardom, including how she tuned in to YouTube videos of English-speaking artists to help her pick up the language as a child.

“I watched a lot of Britney Spears,” Petras confessed, giggling.

The 30-year-old musician — who earlier this year became the first transgender artist to win a major Grammy category and was also named Billboard‘s Chartbreaker for 2023 Women in Music — also shared how she intends to spend the rest of Pride Month in the final week of June. “Gonna go to some clubs,” Petras said. “I’m probably just going to hang out at bars and see my friends and have the best time.”

Back inside the TODAY show studios, Petras drank margaritas with the show’s hosts and revealed which musicians she’d like to team up with in the future following her collaborations with Sam Smith and Nicki Minaj. “I really love Lana Del Rey, I’m a huge fan of hers,” the singer said. “I love M.I.A. I’ve always wanted to make a song with Babyface. Diplo, I love Diplo.”

Then, speaking about her historic Grammy win for best pop duo/group performance with her and Smith’s “Unholy” duet, Petras said she hopes her success marks “a step towards just transgender people being generally more accepted into society.”

“It was a really tough childhood and school experience and all that, it still is,” she continued. “I hope it makes people feel hopeful that they can do anything no matter what they identify as or where they’re from. If you’re really good at something and you work really hard and you’re nice to people, you can achieve anything.”

“No matter if it scares you, you just have to do what your passion is,” she added. “And for me that’s pop music.”

This week, Young Thug takes care of Business, Peso Pluma steps fully into the spotlight, and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice reinvent a pop classic. Check out all of this week’s picks below:

Young Thug, Business is Business

More than just serving as Young Thug’s follow-up to 2021’s wide-ranging Punk, Business is Business represents a show of support from the hip-hop community — as the groundbreaking MC remains incarcerated after being arrested as part of a RICO sting last year, rap’s best and brightest stop by the full-length to pay homage, with Metro Boomin executive producing and Drake, Future, 21 Savage and Lil Uzi Vert contributing guest spots. Business is Business may be a symbolic gesture featuring reanimated material more than a bold new creative endeavor, but hearing Thugger’s elastic voice stretched across an impressive new collection of beats still satisfies as a stopgap until he’s home and back in business.

Peso Pluma, Génesis

At 24 years old, Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, better known as Peso Pluma, has spent this year helping to bend the pillars of North American popular music toward his sound, as Mexican music and its decades-old hallmarks have been refurbished for a fresh generation and, from a charts perspective, have exploded well beyond the wildest expectations of the genre’s supporters. Pluma has become the de facto leader of this new school, thanks to smashes like “Ella Baila Sola,” “La Bebe” and “Por las Noches”… and the fact that none of those songs appear on the track list to his rollicking new album Génesis illustrates his confidence that his earthy instrumentation and high, prodding croon will keep spreading beyond a handful of hits.

Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice with Aqua, “Barbie World”

Nicki Minaj has scored some of the biggest hits of her career while sampling classic singles like Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and Rick James’ “Super Freak,” so when the leader of the Barbz announced that she had reworked Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” (alongside new BFF Ice Spice) for the upcoming Barbie soundtrack, the pairing made all too much sense. Yet “Barbie World” surprises with its structure: instead of letting their verses dance around Aqua’s iconic hook, Minaj and Ice Spice trade lines relentlessly for under two minutes, a giddy rap assault in which the best lines (“I’m a 10, so I pull in a Ken,” Nicki sneers) need to be run back a few times.

Kim Petras, Feed the Beast

Kim Petras boasts two distinct fan groups as she releases her long-awaited debut album: the day-one diehards who have streamed every mixtape, guest spot and themed EP, and the “Unholy” crowd, who caught wind of the pop star when her chart-topping collaboration with Sam Smith yielded a mainstream breakthrough. Both audiences will love Feed the Beast, a dance-pop opus with plenty of potential hits — the turbo-charged “King of Hearts” is going to highlight plenty of club nights this summer — as well as the type of idiosyncratic fun that Petras has specialized in since 2019’s Clarity, particularly in the sexual liberation of the album’s second half.

Portugal. The Man, Chris Black Changed My Life

The story behind Chris Black Changed My Life is crucial to fully appreciating the return of Portugal. The Man, who scored the type of crossover smash single that most bands can only daydream about with “Feel It Still” in 2017, then proceeded to have their lives upended due to professional false starts and personal trauma. While Chris Black Changed My Life is the definition of a hard-fought album — the title honors a dear friend of band leader John Gourley and his untimely passing — the full-length also isn’t overly heavy, as songs like “Grim Generation,” “Ghost Town” and lead single “Dummy” invite the type of sing-alongs that helped Portugal. The Man break through six years ago.

Bizarrap & Rauw Alejandro, “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 56”

Bizarrap has been on a tear: just three weeks after linking up with Peso Pluma for Volume 55 of his viral YouTube collaboration series, the Argentine producer has recruited Puerto Rican superstar Rauw Alejandro and quickly turned around Volume 56. The magic of the series rests in the way that Bizarrap can contort his musical foundation toward the strengths of his collaborator while also not betraying his tone; “Vol. 56” plays out like a particularly crackling Alejandro summer jam, but Bizarrap’s fingerprints are all over its shape-shifting percussion and breathless sonic flourishes, a master bringing another A-lister into his craft.

Editor’s Pick: Militarie Gun, Life Under the Gun

A string of promising EPs over the past three years suggested that, like Turnstile before them, Los Angeles quintet Militarie Gun had a shot at bringing an accessible brand of hardcore to the masses, especially if their sound could coalesce on a full-length. Life Under the Gun is exactly that album — driving and jaggedly catchy, the collection of 12 songs pummels the listener with chunky riffs and brash hooks, and Ian Shelton knows exactly how to deliver a soaring melody while also sounding like he’s about to swallow the microphone whole.
