Attention, passengers: Billie Eilish is speaking. Ahead of her upcoming concerts at Madison Square Garden, the 22-year-old pop star has partnered with New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority to promote taking public transportation.
As announced Tuesday (Oct. 15) on social media, Eilish is working with the MTA to encourage fans to use eco-friendly methods of transportation on their way to her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour showings at the famed NYC venue Oct. 16-18. “If you’re planning to see my concert this week, ditch the car and help the planet by riding the MTA to Madison Square Garden,” reads a message from the “Birds of a Feather” musician in a clip posted by the corporation, which Eilish retweeted.
“You can take the subway or LIRR to @TheGarden—it’s the easiest, most eco-friendly way to get there,” the MTA added in its caption before teasing, “You might even hear Billie’s announcements in stations along the way.”

Eilish kicked off her latest trek Sept. 29 in Quebec, Canada, and has been steadily making her way through the East Coast in the U.S. in the two weeks since. The two-time Oscar winner is already a MSG veteran, having performed two nights at the arena in 2022 on her Happier Than Ever Tour.
The musician is also a longtime advocate for the fight against climate change, partnering with environmental organization REVERB and Support + Feed — which was founded by Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird — on the Hit Me Hard and Soft trek. In March, Baird and the “Bad Guy” singer spoke to Billboard about their sustainability work, with Eilish calling it a “never-ending f–king fight.”
“As we all know, it’s pretty impossible to force someone to care,” she continued at the time. “All you can do is express and explain your beliefs, but a lot of people don’t really understand the severity of the climate [crisis]. And if they do, they’re like, ‘Well, what’s the point? We’re all going to die anyway.’ Believe me, I feel that way too. But ‘what’s the point’ goes both ways: ‘What’s the point? I can do whatever I want. We’re all going to die anyway.’ Or, ‘What’s the point? I might as well do the right thing while I’m here.’ That’s my view.”

With just three weeks to go before the crucial Nov. 5 presidential election, Donald Trump is doubling-down on a lot of his most controversial campaign rally greatest hits. In addition to denigrating his rival, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, by employing abelist slurs at a recent event, twice impeached convicted felon Trump threatened to employ the military to “handle” his left-wing detractors in an weekend interview. The MAGA leader also bailed on a planned town hall in Pennsylvania on Monday (Oct. 14) in favor of dancing along to a 40 minute playlist of songs featuring a number of artists who’ve explicitly asked him (more than once) to stop playing their music at his rallies.
According to ABC, the event in Oaks, PA in the crucial swing state was twice interrupted by medical emergencies in the crowd in the overheated Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and Fairgrounds. Half an hour in, an attendee was stretchered out of the venue, which reportedly prompted Trump to ask the sound person to fire up Schubert’s operatic “Ave Maria.” After a second person fainted and was attended to, Trump asked for the doors to be opened to let some fresh air in, before being told that was not possible for security reasons.
So, after making a joke about people passing out, Trump dispensed with questions and kicked off a bizarre 30-plus minute playlist song and dance during which he cued up a number of well-known tracks by artists who have explicitly, and repeatedly, asked him to cease and desist from playing their music at his rallies.
According to video of the evening, Trump played Rufus Wainwright’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” as well as Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Oliver Anthony’s “Rich Men North of Richmond,” Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain,” James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” Elvis’ “An American Trilogy,” the Village People’s “YMCA” and Andrea Bocelli’s “Time to Say Goodbye.”
In a statement issued Tuesday morning (Oct. 15), Harris supporter Wainwright lambasted Trump for playing the singer’s version of Cohen’s beloved 1984 hymn to the universal struggle of love and heartbreak.
“The song ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen has become an anthem dedicated to peace, love and acceptance of the truth. I’ve been supremely honored over the years to be connected with this ode to tolerance,” wrote Wainwright. “Witnessing Trump and his supporters commune with this music last night was the height of blasphemy. Of course, I in no way condone this and was mortified, but the good in me hopes that perhaps in inhabiting and really listening to the lyrics of Cohen’s masterpiece, Donald Trump just might experience a hint of remorse over what he’s caused. I’m not holding my breath.” The statement also noted that the publishing company for the Cohen estate has sent a cease-and-desist order to the Trump campaign.
GNR and O’Connor’s reps have pointedly asked Trump not to play their music during his campaign stops, with the Village People threatening to sue the former reality TV star last year over what they said was a lookalike band playing their hits at his Mar-a-Lago Florida private club after years of asking him to remove their 1978 queer disco classic from his queue. At press time, spokespeople for all three acts had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment on Trump’s Monday playlist event, though a spokesperson for VP co-founder Victor Willis said a statement was in the works.
The candidate vying for a second White House stint — in the midst of his third overall campaign — has accumulated a long list of acts who do not want to be associated with his divisive, frequently mendacious rhetoric. Over the course of two weeks this summer, Beyoncé, the Foo Fighters and Jack White all slammed the Trump campaign for using their music without permission.
They joined a long list of acts who’ve made similar requests since Trump first ran for the nation’s highest office in 2016, a roster that includes: Adele, Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie, Celine Dion, Earth, Wind & Fire, George Harrison, Neil Young, Isaac Hayes, Linkin Park, Nickelback, Ozzy Osbourne, Prince’s estate and R.E.M., among many others.
Trump has mostly ignored those pleas, even in the face of a lawsuit from the estate of Hayes, though according to previous Billboard reporting there is a long tradition of campaigns hijacking artist’s songs for their own political ends with little blowback. In reality, if a campaign obtains a license to use songs from the catalogs of the leading performing rights organizations BMI and ASCAP — which cover nearly every recognizable song you can think of — they are free to play them. There is, however, a “caveat” in the license that allows the songwriters to object to use of their compositions in a political campaign, which could result in the rights orgs pulling a song from a candidate’s license.
In August, the Foo Fighters vowed to donate royalties from “My Hero” to the Harris campaign following Trump’s blasting of the song at a rally where he was endorsed by rival-turned-supporter independent presidential candidate and anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. At the time, the Independent reported that it had reviewed documents that appeared to confirm that the Trump campaign had licensed the song from BMI’s Songview service.
It was unknown at press time if the Trump campaign had licenses for the other songs played at Monday event, and a spokesperson had not yet returned Billboard‘s request for comment.

Sabrina’s infectious hit “Taste” (Island) holds strong at No. 1 for its eighth week, maintaining its grip on the chart. But Charli’s “Sympathy Is a Knife” (Atlantic) coming in as hot as a brat summer, surging to No. 2 after a remix featuring Ariana Grande gave it a major boost. With only 1,000 chart units separating the two, the competition is fierce, and Charli is well-positioned for a possible takeover.
Not only is Charli challenging Sabrina at the top, but she’s also making noise further down the chart. Her track “365” re-enters the Top 40 at No. 22, following the release of the Shygirl remix.

Gracie Abrams continues her rise as well, with “I Love You, I’m Sorry” (Interscope) poised to vault eight spots to claim No. 3, which would mar her first-ever U.K. Top 3 single. The song’s emotional depth and strong streaming performance have propelled her into new chart territory.
Also climbing is KSI with his collaboration “Thick of It” featuring Trippie Redd (Atlantic), which looks to break into the Top 10 at No. 8, while Teddy Swims could see a new peak at No. 9 with “The Door” (Atlantic), after slowly climbing for 26 weeks. The track’s soulful vibe has clearly resonated with audiences, giving Swims his first Top 10 hit.
In another notable debut, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Bed Chem” enters the Top 10 at No. 10, giving her a second hit in the upper echelon this week.
Meanwhile, Chappell Roan’s infectious track “Pink Pony Club” is on track to reach a new peak at No. 11 on the U.K. Singles Chart according to the latest blast, while Billie Eilish’s ethereal “Birds of a Feather” (Interscope) is expected to rise to No. 13, continuing her strong presence.
BLACKPINK’s JENNIE is making a mark with her latest solo single “Mantra” (Columbia), which is poised to enter the U.K. Top 20 at No. 18, potentially marking her first major solo chart breakthrough in the region.
As the week progresses, the question remains: Will Charli XCX finally knock Sabrina Carpenter from the top spot, or will Sabrina hold on for another week of chart glory?
The 2024 MAMA Awards are just around the corner, and the first set of star-studded performers have officially been announced.
The three-day event, which celebrates the brightest stars in K-pop, will kick off on Nov. 21 at the Hollywood Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the first time, where KATSEYE, ILLIT and RIIZE will perform. The awards ceremony will then take place at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan on November 22 and 23, with ENHYPEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER and IVE performing on the first day and Aespa, INI and ZEROBASEONE taking the stage on the second day.
This year’s MAMA Awards, presented by Visa, will feature the concept of “Big Blur: What Is Real?,” reflecting the growing trend of blurred boundaries between industries, culture, music genres and technology. In correspondence with the theme, the ceremony will “present surreal but real experiences and showcase visually captivating performances through the convergence of art and technology,” per a press release.

In addition to the performers, the 2024 MAMA Awards nominees were also revealed by entertainment company CJ ENM. The eligibility period ranged from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024, and the nominees were decided on based on an evaluation of global music data as well as a panel of specialists.

One of the new categories this year is best choreography, and the Visa Fans’ Choice awards have returned. The first round of votes will take place from Oct. 14 to 25, and the second round will follow starting on Nov. 1. Fans can vote on X as well as the global K-pop platform Mnet Plus, which will list out the nominees.

Coolest Pop Song of the Week: Bishop Briggs, “Good For Me”
“I’m dreaming of all I ever wanted,” Bishop Briggs sings, stretching out the word “dream” to glide a little bit longer before following falling back down with, “was it ever good for me?”
The chorus to “Good For Me,” a darkly pretty meditation on achieving longtime goals as your identity evolves, buttresses Briggs’ tone with a dream-pop arrangement built around a driving beat and gradually deepening guitar chugs. Her voice, which has often been deployed as a hurricane-level force in the past, bends and lilts here, simmering in the question rather than finding a declaration.
Eight years ago, the UK native hit it big with “River,” a soul-rock anthem that crossed over to alternative radio and reached the top 5 on the Rock Airplay chart. Briggs continued finding success at the format, with seven entries on the Hot Rock & Alternative chart across her first two studio albums (2018’s Church of Scars and 2019’s Champion) on Island Records; a half-decade later, the singer-songwriter is now in her thirties, a new parent, still grieving the tragic loss of her sister, Kate McLaughlin, and operating outside of the major label system, while delivering the most revealing and emotionally resonant songs of her career.
“Good For Me,” the latest offering from new album Tell My Therapist I’m Fine (out this Friday through Virgin Music Group), crystallizes the album’s compelling juxtaposition of Briggs figuring out the possibilities of the next phase of her career while simultaneously settling into her skin. Songs like “My Serotonin” and “Shut It Off” allow Briggs to keep rocking out, but she now turns up the volume to emphasize her lyrical darts rather than shout over them. Meanwhile, Briggs mourns her sister and also utilizes her grief to push herself forward — in “Mona Lisa on a Mattress,” for instance, she doubles her voice and sings about a broken romance, “Kate would always say, I should run away,” as a means of finding resolution through a memory.
In the center of the album is “Good For Me,” the subtleties of its production and the maturity of its lyrical perspective slowly blooming and hooking the listener. Briggs has experienced several life changes since her last album, and is wondering what she’s even chasing anymore — but the care given to that exploration makes the song, and its host album, worth absorbing in full.

Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler, “A-Frame”
Director Martin Scorsese is among the producers on an upcoming documentary about the Beatles‘ legendary first trip to the United States slated to stream exclusive on Disney+ starting Nov. 29. According to Variety, Beatles ’64 will feature never-before-seen footage of the band and its rabid fans at the height of Beatlemania.
Scorsese produced the doc directed by David Tedeschi (Personality Crisis: One Night Only), which will also feature new interviews with living Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The film follows McCartney and Starr and late bandmates John Lennon and George Harrison as they land in New York in Feb. 1964, promising to reveal “a more intimate behind the scenes story” of the group’s iconic debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, as well as footage of the Fab Four’s first American show at the Washington D.C. Coliseum.
The quartet made their debut appearance on Sullivan’s variety show on Feb. 9, 1964, a performance that was seen by a record-breaking 73-million people and is often cited by musicians of a certain vintage as their inspiration for starting a rock band. Variety reported that the doc also features rare footage shot by documentarians Albert and David Maysles (Gimme Shelter).

A synopsis of the film reads: “On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived in New York City to unprecedented excitement and hysteria. From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country. Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, the most watched television event of its time. Beatles ’64 presents the spectacle, but also tells a more intimate behind the scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame.”
In addition to Scorsese – who also directed 2011’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World doc — other producers of the doc include McCartney, Starr, Harrison’s widow, Olivia Harrison, Lennon’s son, musician Sean Ono Lennon, and others.
The new Beatles doc will be accompanied by the Nov. 22 release of all seven American Beatles albums in a vinyl reissue collection entitled The Beatles: 1964 U.S. Albums in Mono; the albums will be available individually as well as in a box set. According to Variety, the reissue will include 180-gram albums that have been out of print on vinyl since 1995, including Meet the Beatles!, The Beatles’ Second Album, A Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Sound Track), Something New, The Beatles’ Story, Beatles ’65 and The Early Beatles.
