People's Choice Awards

The People’s Choice Awards is expanding with the announcement of the first-ever People’s Choice Country Awards airing in September across NBC and Peacock, live from the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville.

The two-hour telecast will give NBC a country awards show to compete with the CMA Awards, which have aired on ABC since 2006; the CMT Music Awards, which have aired on CBS since 2022; and the  ACM Awards, which have streamed on Prime Video since 2022.

NBC aired the CMA Awards from 1968-71 and the ACM Awards from 1979-97 but hasn’t been in the country awards game for years.

“We’re excited to partner with the Grand Ole Opry to bring the year’s biggest celebration in country music to Nashville,” Cassandra Tryon, senior vice president, live events, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, said in a statement. “Country fans are passionate about their music and there’s no better place to host this event than from country music’s biggest stage.”

As the show’s name implies, the winners will be chosen entirely by the fans, though several honorary awards will also be bestowed.

The People’s Choice Country Awards will extend to social platforms with All-Access Live bringing fans at home behind the scenes as well as interactively connecting country’s most popular stars with their biggest fans.

The telecast will be produced by Den of Thieves with Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski serving as executive producers

The People’s Choice Awards aired on CBS from 1975-2017 and was highly rated for many years. E! acquired the show in 2017; it aired on that channel for the first time in 2018. NBC joined E! in airing the show in 2021.

The People’s Choice Awards has long included country categories and performances. At the most recent People’s Choice Awards, which aired Dec. 6, 2022, Shania Twain performed a four-song hit medley. Carrie Underwood was voted the country artist of 2022, beating Kelsea Ballerini, Kane Brown, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Thomas Rhett and Morgan Wallen.

The 2022 People’s Choice Awards bucked industry trends with year-over-year ratings growth on the broadcast network, and delivered 173 million total engagements across linear, digital and social platforms, according to an NBC statement.

This new project is an example of collaboration resulting from NBCUniversal’s equity investment in Opry Entertainment Group alongside Atairos, which was finalized last year.

The upcoming awards show is the latest in a series of moves from Ryman Hospitality Properties and Opry Entertainment Group. This week, OEG revealed a minority investment in country music lifestyle brand Whiskey Riff. In 2022, Ryman Hospitality Properties closed on its purchase of Block 21, a property that includes ACL Live at Moody Theater, the home venue of the television program Austin City Limits. 2020 saw the launch of Circle Network, a joint venture between OEG and Gray Television that featured Grand Ole Opry performances and more.

Taylor Swift, BTS, Lizzo, Selena Gomez and actress Elizabeth Olsen each won multiple awards at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, which were presented Tuesday (Dec. 6) at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Kenan Thompson hosted the show, which aired on both NBC and E!
Swift won three awards – the female artist of 2022, the music video of 2022 (“Anti-Hero”) and the album of 2022 (Midnights, which has topped the Billboard 200 in five of its first six weeks).

BTS won two awards – the group of 2022 and the concert tour of 2022. In addition, BTS’ Jung Kook won the collaboration song of 2022 for his featured role on Charlie Puth’s “Left and Right.” That spunky collab debuted and peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July.

Lizzo won the song of 2022 for “About Damn Time,” as well as a previously announced honorary award, the People’s Champion award. “About Damn Time,” which topped the Hot 100 for two weeks in July and August, is nominated for both record and song of the year at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

Gomez won the comedy TV star of 2022 for her role in Only Murders in the Building and the social celebrity of 2022.

Olsen, the star of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, won the female movie star of 2022 and the action movie star of 2022.

Stranger Things was also a double winner. It was named the [TV] show of 2022 and also the sci-fi/fantasy show of 2022. Despite winning the top movie award – the movie of 2022 – Doctor Strange…, strangely, did not win as the action movie of 2022; that award went to Top Gun: Maverick.

There were some surprises in the music categories. Becky G beat Bad Bunny for the Latin artist of 2022. Carrie Underwood beat both Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen for the country artist of 2022. (That one probably shouldn’t rate as a surprise, given Underwood’s massive popularity.)

The Kelly Clarkson Show won as the daytime talk show of 2022 to the surprise of absolutely no one.

Shania Twain won a special award, the Music Icon award. She also performed a medley of her greatest hits as well as her new single “Waking Up Dreaming.”

Lauren Spencer-Smith, who was nominated as the new artist of 2022, but lost to Latto, performed her hit song “Fingers Crossed.”

Ryan Reynolds received the third previously-announced special award, the People’s Icon award.

Lauren Spencer-Smith will perform her hit “Fingers Crossed” on the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, which are set to air on both NBC and E! on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The song reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January.
Shania Twain, this year’s Music Icon Award recipient, will also take the stage at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., to perform a medley of her hits as well as her new single “Waking Up Dreaming.” The new song is from her upcoming sixth studio album, Queen of Me.

It’s doubtless just a coincidence, but both singers are Canadian, as is actor and budding director Ryan Reynolds, who will receive the People’s Icon Award. (Spencer-Smith was born in England, but moved to Canada when she was 3.)

Lizzo is set to receive the People’s Champion Award but is not slated to perform.

Kenan Thompson will host the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Amy Poehler, Billy Porter, David Spade, Ana Gasteyer and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez are among the presenters.

“Live From E!: The 2022 People’s Choice Awards” will air at 7 p.m. ET/PT on E!. Both shows are produced by Den of Thieves, with executive producers Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski.

Shania Twain will receive the Music Icon award at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, which are set to air on NBC and E! on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.

Christina Aguilera was the inaugural recipient of this honor last year. As previously announced, another top music star, Lizzo, is slated to receive this year’s People’s Champion Award, while actor and budding director Ryan Reynolds will receive the People’s Icon Award.

In addition to receiving the award, Twain will perform a medley of her greatest hits as well as her new song “Waking Up Dreaming” from her forthcoming sixth album Queen of Me, which is set for release on Feb. 3, 2023. This will mark her first appearance on the PCAs stage since 2005, when she took home the award for favorite country female singer.

“I’m so incredibly honored to be named ‘Music Icon,’” Twain said in a statement. “I have some of the greatest fans in the world. They have supported me since the early days, and it’s their love and passion that keeps me going. I’m thrilled to go back on tour and bring my new music and fan favorites to them, and what better way to start than at the People’s Choice Awards!”

“Live from E!: The 2022 People’s Choice Awards” will kick off the night with a red carpet special at 7 p.m. ET/PT on E!

The 2022 People’s Choice Awards and “Live From E!: The 2022 People’s Choice Awards” are both produced by Den of Thieves with executive producers Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski.

Lizzo is slated to receive the People’s Champion Award at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, Billboard can exclusively announce.
Lizzo will be recognized “for her groundbreaking contributions to music and television, as well as her commitment to championing overall diversity and inclusivity across race, gender, sexuality, and size,” according to a statement.

In addition to this special award, Lizzo is nominated in four music categories – the female artist of 2022, the song of 2022 (“About Damn Time”), the album of 2022 (Special) and the social celebrity of 2022. Her Prime Video show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls is also nominated for the competition show of 2022.The 2022 People’s Choice Awards will air simultaneously on NBC and E! on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Actor and comedian Kenan Thompson will host the annual ceremony for the second consecutive year.

The People’s Champion Award recognizes a person who uses their platform to fight important social causes and embodies being a champion of the people. Previous recipients are social justice activist Bryan Stevenson (2018), P!nk (2019), director/screenwriter Tyler Perry (2020) and actor Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock (2021).

“Lizzo is not only an incredibly talented performer and groundbreaking entertainer, she is also a role model and inspiration to fans worldwide,” Cassandra Tryon, svp, entertainment live events, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a statement. “She leads with kindness, advocates for inclusivity, and champions increased diversity and equity in the industry and beyond. Her commitment to breaking barriers and empowering others to use their own voices to create change makes her a true ‘People’s Champion.’”

Lizzo has performed at the Grammys, American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, BET Awards and Saturday Night Live, where she was both host and musical performer.

Lizzo won three Grammys in 2020 and is expected to receive several more nominations when the nods for the 65th annual Grammy Awards are announced on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Her three 2020 Grammys are best pop solo performance for “Truth Hurts,” a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100; best traditional R&B performance for “Jerome”; and best urban contemporary album for the deluxe edition of Cuz I Love You, which contained both tracks.

She won a Primetime Emmy in September as an executive producer of Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Girrrls, which was voted outstanding competition program.

Actor and budding director Ryan Reynolds was previously announced as the recipient of this year’s People’s Icon Award. The show also recognizes a Music Icon each year. That award has yet to be announced.

Bad Bunny and Harry Styles are the top music nominees for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, with seven and six nominations, respectively. Styles’ tally includes a nod as the drama movie star of 2022 for his performance in Don’t Worry Darling.

Newly minted CMA entertainer of the year Luke Combs, 2022 Primetime Emmy nominee Selena Gomez, hitmaker Charlie Puth and the aforementioned Lizzo each received four nominations. Gomez’s tally includes two nominations for her work on the hit TV show Only Murders in the Building.
