Liam Payne is reflecting on one of his bigger career controversies, in which he sent One Direction fans into a spiral after he controversially claimed on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast that he was the inspiration behind Simon Cowell’s decision to create One Direction.

A year later, the “Strip That Down” singer uploaded an eight-minute YouTube video on Saturday (July 8), in which he revealed that the backlash was one of the incidents that ultimately encouraged him to enter a sobriety treatment program for 100 days. “My own frustrations with my own career and where I kind of landed, I took shots at everybody else which is wrong. Obviously, I want to apologize for that, in the first instance, because that’s definitely not me,” he shared in the clip. “One of the biggest remarks I made was about the One Direction thing … and a lot of self-protection, I suppose, in that moment, more than anything. The rest of the boys really stuck by me when I needed them most, they kinda came to the rescue. Even Zayn, as well, which is why I did send him a little thank you online. It came across really big-headed didn’t it?”

Back in June 2022, Payne appeared on Impaulsive, in which he shared a number of thoughts on the members of One Direction he didn’t get along with, the alleged origin of the boy band and why he can’t stand beside former 1D bandmate Zayn Malik.

“I just kind of feel like I’ve got more of a grip on life and everything that was getting away from me, I just feel like I’ve got more of a handle on it,” Payne reflected back on the moment now. “I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually because I kind of became somebody who I didn’t really recognize anymore. And I’m sure you guys didn’t either. I was in bad shape up until that point and I was really happy to kind of put a stopper to life and work.”

Payne added that his decision to seek treatment also stemmed from wanting to be better for his six-year-old son, adding, “There’s no point trying to be a dad when you’ve got nothing to teach. And I don’t think up until this point I really had much to say to him other than what came from deeply loving and very deeply. Which are obviously the most important things, but I just kind of feel like I’ve got more of a grip on life now.”

Moving forward, the 29-year-old singer said he’s focusing on his sobriety as he continues to make social media content for the rest of the year. He’s also set to head out on a headlining tour later in the year.

Louis Tomlinson’s concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre went awry on Wednesday night (June 21) when severe weather and golf ball-sized hail delayed and eventually postponed the show. It’s been seven years since One Direction split up in 2016, but the boys have still had each other’s back throughout the years. Niall Horan, for example, recently shared that he sent his new third studio album The Show to Louis Tomlinson for feedback. Horan is now opening up about the group’s maintained closeness in […]

Ever since One Direction went on hiatus in 2015, fans have been wanting a reunion. In a new interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Niall Horan gave Directioners a realistic response when asked if the superstar fivesome will reunite for a performance. One Direction may not be working together as a band anymore, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still collaborating behind the scenes. In a recent interview, Niall Horan revealed he typically sends his solo music to one or more of his four former bandmates to get feedback pre-release.

“Not every time, but if I feel like I need an opinion, I always send it out,” the “Slow Hands” singer revealed in a Thursday (April 6) video for Esquire.

“This time I sent it to Louis, and he gave me his honest opinion on it, which is always handy,” Horan continued, referencing his upcoming album The Show. “We’ve released enough songs over the years, so we know what’s decent and what’s not. All the 1D boys and artists alike, I’ll always try and send it around and get everybody’s opinion.”

Seven years after One Direction split up for good in 2016, recent months have seen a welcome uptick in the ex bandmates showing support for one another publicly. While accepting album of the year for Harry’s House at the BRIT Awards in February, Harry Styles said he “wouldn’t be here without” Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. And in October, Tomlinson praised Horan for joining the judge’s panel on The Voice.

At another point in the new interview, Horan took a moment to show some love for Lizzo, who appeared as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! when the “Heaven” artist subbed in as a guest host. “She’s, as we all know, one of the best personalities we have in music,” Horan told the publication.

Louis Tomlinson introduced a new side of him to the world at Thursday’s (March 16) London premiere of his upcoming documentary, All of Those Voices, and his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne was there on the red carpet to support.

In videos shared by fans to Twitter, Payne is seen taking photos and waving to fans as he walks into the premiere, shortly after Tomlinson himself also made his appearance.

The Charlie Lightening-directed All of Those Voices, out in theaters on March 22, will delve into Tomlinson’s life and musical journey, complete with never-before-seen home video footage and behind-the-scenes access to the star’s 2022 world tour.

In a previously released first look, Tomlinson discusses his days in 1D and how he grew to be the member with the most songwriting credits. ““All of a sudden, I felt in control again. The first two and a half years, I just felt like I wasn’t in control of myself or certainly had an influence on the band,” he said of writing songs while in the group. “When I think about how proud I am of One Direction, I think of us as a collective. When I think about what makes me most proud as me as an individual in that band, is definitely having the most writing credits. That makes me feel important to the band, and that’s all I ever wanted when I was a lad.”

Louis Tomlinson is opening up more than ever on his upcoming documentary, All of Those Voices, and in a first look released on Tuesday (March 14), the “Two of Us” singer discussed how he insisted on writing songs as a member of One Direction.

“It had always been in my mind that it’d be cool if we weren’t just the standard boy band who just got given songs and sang them. Like, maybe we should be writing our own songs,” he shared in the one-minute clip. “Once I got to feel stuff bubbling for us and I could see that we got people’s attention, I realized that we might be able to make a few of our own decisions.”

Tomlinson added that being a songwriter in the group was the first time he “felt ownership” in his career. “All of a sudden, I felt in control again. The first two and a half years, I just felt like I wasn’t in control of myself or certainly had an influence on the band,” he continued. “When I think about how proud I am of One Direction, I think of us as a collective. When I think about what makes me most proud as me as an individual in that band, is definitely having the most writing credits. That makes me feel important to the band, and that’s all I ever wanted when I was a lad.”

The now-31-year-old has writing credits on a number of One Direction hits, including “No Control,” “Night Changes,” “Perfect,” “Last First Kiss” and “History.”

Eagle-eyed One Direction fans noticed a boy band-related oversight in Netflix’s new heist series, Kaleidoscope.

In the show’s “Green” episode, criminal Judy (played by Rosaline Elbay) is attempting to smuggle SIM cards to her boyfriend Stan (Peter Mark Kendall), who is in prison. Judy is caught by a prison guard, and goes on to bribe her with One Direction concert tickets.

The tickets however, are for a show on March 6, 2016, months after the band had already gone on hiatus. “IT HURTS BEING A DIRECTIONER,” one Twitter user wrote in response.

During their time as a group, the X Factor-born boy band had four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and six top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 including “What Makes You Beautiful” (No. 4) and “Best Song Ever” (No. 2).

Zayn Malik left the group in March 2015, and remaining members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson went on to announce one final album as a foursome, Made in the A.M., before revealing that they will be going on a hiatus in August 2015.

In March 2021, Styles became the first One Direction member to win a Grammy Award. He took home best pop solo performance for “Watermelon Sugar,” the No. 1 single from his Fine Line album.
