Official U.K. Charts

Sabrina Carpenter continues her reign on the U.K. Singles Chart, as her infectious single “Taste” holds the No. 1 spot for a second consecutive week.
The track, which is part of her sixth album, Short n‘ Sweet, dominates as the U.K.’s most-streamed song of the week, racking up 8 million streams. Sabrina has now accumulated a total of 14 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2024, placing her as one of the year’s most successful chart-topping artists.

Making chart history, Sabrina is now the first female artist to simultaneously hold the top three spots on the U.K. Singles Chart for two consecutive weeks.

Alongside “Taste” at No. 1, her previous chart-toppers, “Please Please Please” and “Espresso,” remain at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The only other artist to accomplish this feat was Ed Sheeran, who held the top three positions for multiple weeks back in 2017 with hits such as “Shape of You” and “Galway Girl.”

The success of “Taste” has been further amplified by the recent release of the viral horror-themed music video, which features Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega.

Aside from Sabrina’s chart domination, there are other notable movements in this week’s U.K. Singles Chart.

Oasis’s 1995 single “Live Forever” climbs to a new peak at No. 8, marking a milestone for the band as it surpasses its original 1995 peak of No. 10.

Meanwhile, another Oasis classic, “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” returns to the Top 10 for the first time in 28 years, landing at No. 9, bolstered by the band’s recent reunion tour news.

This marks the first time the iconic Britpop group has had two singles in the Top 10 simultaneously. Other movements include Benson Boone’s “Slow It Down” rebounding to No. 19, and Gigi Perez’s viral hit “Sailor Song” jumping to No. 24.

If “Taste” climbs to No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, it will be the third consecutive chart-topping single from Short n’ Sweet, joining “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” which together dominated the charts for 12 weeks earlier this year.

The leader on the midweek chart, “Taste” is a polished pop track that sees Carpenter addressing an ex-boyfriend and his new partner with unapologetic confidence, delivering lines like: “You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you.” With this single, Carpenter effortlessly evolves her sound, bringing a bold edge to the pop style that has defined her success.

Adding to the song’s impact is its music video, which dropped on the same day as the album’s release, Aug. 23.

Directed by Dave Meyers, the video is a wild tribute to classic horror flicks, particularly Death Becomes Her, and it stars none other than Jenna Ortega, known best for her titular role on the Netflix series Wednesday.

The video is a bloody adventure, as Carpenter and Ortega’s characters go head-to-head in a gory, over-the-top showdown that ends with a surprising twist: the two becoming friends after their shared love interest meets a gruesome end.

And it’s not just “Taste” making major moves across the pond—two other tracks from Short n’ Sweet are also climbing chart. “Please Please Please” is currently sitting at No. 5, and the disco-infused “Good Graces” is on track to break into the Top 10 at No. 10.

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars are also aiming to hit a new peak with their track “Die With A Smile,” which is climbing to No. 6 in the midweek charts.

Meanwhile, Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, and D.O.D are inching closer to a Top 10 breakthrough with their collaborative single “Somedays,” projected to rise to No. 11. Teddy Swims is also on the rise, with his slow-burning hit “The Door” expected to enter the U.K. Top 20 for the first time at No. 18 this Friday

Chase & Status and Stormzy continue their reign atop the U.K. Official Singles Chart for a second consecutive week with their collaboration “BACKBONE.”
The track, which pairs Chase & Status’s high-energy drum and bass production with Stormzy’s commanding lyrical delivery, remains the most-streamed song in the U.K. this week, boasting an impressive 5.5 million streams.

Following the single’s debut at No. 1 in the U.K. last week, Chase & Status, comprised of Saul Milton and Will Kennard, said of the collaboration with Stormzy, “We knew that connecting with Stormzy was going to create something special, but we didn’t expect a KO reaction like this.”

“To see him running out at our show at The Milton Keynes Bowl in his best man’s suit, straight from a wedding and in front of 45,000 people, was insane!” they added. “One of the greatest British MCs to ever do it, spitting over DnB. And for it to go straight in at Number 1? It couldn’t get any better for us.”

This week’s highest new entry belongs to the powerhouse duo of Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Their track “Die with a Smile” debuts at No. 7, marking Gaga’s 15th and Mars’s 11th Top 10 singles in the U.K. The track fuses Gaga’s distinctive flair for dramatic pop with Mars’s smooth, R&B-infused vocals, creating a unique blend that has quickly propelled the track into the Top 10.

Meanwhile, BL3SS, CamrinWatsin, and bbyclose celebrate their first-ever Top 5 single as their summer dance hit “Kisses” climbs to a new peak at No. 5.

Belfast’s rising star Jordan Adetunji also continues his ascent, with his catchy track “KEHLANI” moving up to No. 8, marking another career milestone.

Elsewhere on the chart, Chappell Roan’s “HOT TO GO!” breaks into the Top 10, reaching No. 10 after 14 weeks on the chart, thanks in part to a surprise performance with Olivia Rodrigo in Los Angeles. Indian rapper Hanumankind and producer Kalmi make their mark on the U.K. charts as well, with their track “Big Dawgs” jumping six spots to land at No. 15.

In other notable movements, Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, and D.O.D’s “Somedays” continues to climb, now at No. 16, while Taylor Swift’s “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” rises to No. 21 following the release of its Eras Tour-filmed music video.

Finally, Gigi Perez’s “Sailor Song” makes its first appearance in the Top 40, climbing to No. 35, and Gracie Abrams’ “I Love You, I’m Sorry” gains a new peak at No. 37.

Listen to “BACKBONE” by Chase & Status and Stormzy below.

Chase & Status and Stormzy are making a bold move on the U.K. Official Singles Chart this week with their explosive new track “BACKBONE.”
The track, a blend of Chase & Status’s dark drum and bass beats and Stormzy’s commanding flow, has surged to the top of the midweek chart. It marks a major moment for the duo, who could be on the brink of landing their first-ever collaborative U.K. No. 1 single.

For Stormzy, it would add yet another milestone to his impressive career, giving him his fourth No. 1 hit. He first hit No. 1 in 2019 with “Vossi Bop” and later that year with “Own It,” featuring Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy, and “Take Me Back to London” also with Sheeran.

However, the battle for the top spot is far from over.

Trending on Billboard

Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” has shown remarkable staying power, jumping back to No. 2. Roan’s track, a catchy pop anthem with an irresistible hook, has been a fan favorite, and its resurgence suggests it still has the potential to challenge for No. 1 by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish’s “Guess” has slipped to No. 3, but with its pulsating beats and the star power of both artists, it remains a strong contender in this week’s chart race. The song, which previously held the top spot, still remains a replay among listeners, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it make a late push back towards No. 1.

Beyond the top three, the charts are bustling with activity.

At No. 4, Billie Eilish continues to hold strong with Birds of a Feather. The track has shown remarkable staying power on the charts, maintaining its position near the top for 13 weeks. Meanwhile, Myles Smith is sitting comfortably at No. 5 with Stargazing, a track that has steadily climbed the charts over the past 14 weeks.

“Kisses,” the breakout summer hit from Bl3SS, CamrinWatsin, and bbyclose, continues its ascent, now perched at No. 6. The track’s smooth, laid-back vibe has made it a summer staple, and it’s edging ever closer to cracking the Top 5.

In a surprise move, Jade’s “Angel Of My Dreams” is set to re-enter the U.K. Top 10 at No. 8. The song, with its ethereal vocals and haunting melody, has been given new life by the release of its S.A.D. (Slow. Angelic. Dramatic.) version.

Further down the chart, Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, and D.O.D.’s “Somedays” is making a significant leap, climbing 19 places to land at No. 12. The track, a club-ready anthem with a driving beat, is vibing with listeners as we head deeper into summer.

This week’s chart battle is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. With “BACKBONE” currently leading the charge, the pressure is on for Chase & Status and Stormzy to maintain their momentum and secure that No. 1 spot.

But with strong competition from Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, and Billie Eilish, anything could happen by the time the U.K. Singles Chart is revealed.

Finally! We’re well into August and it took up until this week for a British act to reach No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart in 2024.
Charli XCX achieves the feat as her remix of “Guess,” featuring Billie Eilish, debuts at No. 1. It’s the first song by a British artist to top the Official U.K. Singles Chart since Wham!’s 1984 holiday perennial “Last Christmas” wrapped up a four-week run at No. 1 over the 2023 holidays. Since then, the No. 1 spot on the U.K. chart was held by seven American acts and one Irish act (Hozier, who led for two weeks with “Too Sweet”).

Sabrina Carpenter has held the top spot on the Official U.K. Singles Chart for a total of 12 weeks (so far) in 2024 – seven for “Espresso” and five for “Please Please Please.” The other hits by American acts that have topped the U.K. chart so far in 2024 are Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” (seven weeks), Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em” (five weeks), Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” (two weeks), Taylor Swift feat. Post Malone’s “Fortnight” (one week) and Eminem‘s “Houdini” (two weeks).

“Guess” becomes Charli’s second No. 1 in the U.K. — and her first as a lead artist. She first topped the chart in 2013 as the featured artist on Icona Pop’s “I Love It.”

Trending on Billboard

“Guess” is the third U.K. chart-topper for Eilish, which is two more than she has had in her home country. (“Bad Guy” remains her only No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to date.) Moreover, “Guess” is Eilish’s first U.K. No. 1 that wasn’t from a film. Her two previous U.K. No. 1s are “No Time to Die” (2020) and “What Was I Made For?” (2023), her Oscar-winning songs from the James Bond film of the same name and Barbie, respectively.

“Guess” first appeared on the deluxe edition of Charli XCX’s album Brat, dubbed Brat and It’s the Same but There’s Three More Songs So It’s Not.

“Guess” has yet to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, but, writing in the weekly Trending Up column, Jason Lipshutz suggests that that will soon change: “Don’t be shocked if ‘Guess’ crashes the top 20 of the Hot 100 next week.”

Chappell Roan’s first full-length album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, reaches No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart in its 17th week. That’s higher than the album has climbed on the Billboard 200, where it inches up to No. 4 this week, its highest ranking to date.

Roan is the ninth American artist to reach No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums chart in 2024, following Green Day, Kahan, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Swift, Eilish, Gracie Abrams and Eminem.

Charli XCX is making serious headway in the U.K. chart race with her latest single, “Guess“.
With a viral remix featuring none other than Billie Eilish, Charli is ready to nab her first solo No. 1 hit in the U.K. It’s been a while since she reigned at the top—back in 2012, she soared to No. 1 as part of Icona Pop’s infectious banger, “I Love It“. Now, it looks like it’s finally Charli’s time to shine on her own.

Charli’s chart domination doesn’t stop there.

Her track “Apple” is also expected to crash into the Top 10 for the very first time, according to an early update published by the Official Charts Company. Currently at No. 10, the summer anthem is proving to be an unstoppable force. Meanwhile, “360” is climbing higher, reaching a new midweek peak at No. 11.

It’s safe to say Charli is on fire, and there’s no extinguishing BRAT summer.

In other chart news, Jordan Adetunji’s track “Kehlani” is set to hit a new high, rising to No. 13.

The boost comes thanks to a fresh remix featuring the actual Kehlani, adding some extra flair to the already popular track.

Not to be outdone, Adam Port, Stryv & KeineMusik are shaking up the dance scene with their hit “Move”, which is expected to leap three places to No. 15, marking a fresh peak for this dancefloor sensation.

And for a touch of nostalgia, get ready for *NSYNC to make a surprise comeback. Their classic hit “Bye Bye Bye” is set to re-enter the U.K. Top 20 at No. 16, marking the first time the song has been this high in the charts in a whopping 24 years. Originally peaking at No. 3 back in 2000, this resurgence is all thanks to the ongoing buzz around Deadpool & Wolverine.

As we await the final results this Friday, all eyes are on Charli XCX. Will she secure her first solo No. 1, or will the competition be too fierce?

One thing’s for sure—this week’s U.K. charts are shaping up to be an exciting ride for music fans everywhere, so stay tuned.

Stay tuned to see who will claim the top spot next week and what surprises the charts have in store.

Earlier this month, an alarming stat sent a shudder through the U.K. music industry. When the Official Singles Charts announced the biggest songs of the year so far in the country, only four of the top 20 were by British artists: Artemas (“I Like The Way You Kiss Me”), Cassö (“Prada” featuring Raye and D-Block Europe), Sophie Ellis-Bextor (“Murder On The Dance Floor”) and Natasha Bedingfield (“Unwritten”), the latter two enjoying a boost from film syncs in Saltburn and Anyone But You, respectively.
It was a chilling omen nonetheless. Where are the breakout stars from the U.K., and how will they get onto the international stage?

Trending on Billboard

2024 has proved a particularly tough one for U.K. artists: no single from a British artist has hit No. 1 on the charts. The last was by Wham! for the seasonal hit “Last Christmas;” before that, it was the Beatles with the AI-assisted single “Now and Then.” In 2022, the top 10 songs in the U.K. were all made by homegrown artists like Ed Sheeran, Sam Fender and Kate Bush. Now, questions are being asked about the success of U.K. artists on a global scale — particularly pop — and why the landscape is not particularly rosy.

The U.K. appears to be in an era of importing music. Alongside stalwarts like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, new names like Noah Kahan, Benson Boone, Teddy Swims, Tate McRae and Shaboozey have flourished in a way that local talent has not. Annabella Coldrick, CEO of the Music Managers Forum, says that strong performances on the U.K. Charts can be key milestones for acts as they head to international markets. “If we’re not even dominating the charts in our own market,” Coldrick says, “then who follows?”

So how can the U.K.’s emerging artists keep pace? Competing with the resources and spending that the major labels can unlock in the U.S .market is an uphill battle, but music journalist Alim Kheraj suggests it runs deeper than that: “The U.K. [industry] has been so focused on hip-hop and singer-songwriters for a while now, so perhaps that’s why there’s been fewer pop stars transferring to the global stage.” There’s been international success for Artemas and Myles Smith, whose single “Stargazing” blazed onto the Hot 100 earlier this year, and other British artists like dance act Fred Again… and rapper Central Cee, but few in the more traditional pop sphere.

Coldrick says that we could see a change in the majors’ involvement with supporting new talent. “Maybe there’s a world in which the catalog labels become entirely separate from investment in new music,” she says. “That might be a good thing as it’s a different kind of investment business.” Following the announcement that resources at several labels at Universal Music would be merged, there are fears that non-priority artists will fall even further down the chain given their return on investment compared to catalog hits.

There are a myriad of issues that touring U.K. musicians face in 2024. Production costs and visa fees have risen substantially and the after-effects of Brexit have meant that touring EU countries is less profitable. “We’ve got very little government investment and a hostile environment for touring,” Coldrick says. “Artists and managers will do anything to make things work as they’re innovative problem solvers, but that’s a huge burden for them.”

Coldrick also notes that the U.K. is lagging behind other markets’ approach to exporting music. She celebrates the success of regional music scenes, particularly in Latin American countries and Asia, but says that lack of a “joined-up” export program is holding back U.K. artists. Those schemes can help provide funds to cover tour and visa costs and provide practical advice.

In 2022, a report by UK Music said that the value of exporting British talent — led by Harry Styles and Glass Animals — generated £4 billion to the economy. The Music Export Growth Scheme, Coldrick notes, is relatively slight compared to initiatives by Australia and the Netherlands. “We’ve been putting barriers up,” she says. “We’ve rested on our laurels a little bit and always relied on our great heritage and history.”

Kheraj suggests that there needs to be a recalibration of what we consider a “breakout artist.”’” He notes that the forthcoming new album from breakout act Sabrina Carpenter will be her sixth and follows success in the Disney stable, as well as a recent support slot on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Similarly, buzzy new act Chappell Roan first signed with Atlantic in 2015 and released music consistently until her 2023 debut album. Charli XCX’s first megahits — “Boom Clap” and Iggy Azalea team-up “Fancy” — were released in 2014; a decade later, she’s a key endorsement for Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election and in the midst of a Brat Summer.

“Someone like Olivia Rodrigo was a star and had a hit right out the gate, but that is so rare these days for an artist to launch with that level of commercial success,” Kheraj says. “We should be looking at people who’ve been doing it for a while longer as it does take time.”

There is no shortage of talent. Earlier this month Griff, who first released music on Warner Music in 2019, shared her debut LP Vertigo and had the best-selling opening week for a debut album by a British female since Raye’s 2021 debut; in October she will support Carpenter on a run of U.S. tour dates. Kheraj points to the early success of Jade Thirlwall’s debut solo single “Angel of My Dreams” on the U.K. Singles Charts as a bright spot. “She gets all the cultural touch points, is a fan of that world and has already operated on a global stage,” he says of the Little Mix member. “I think we could see her cross over to ‘Main Pop Girl.’”

Other names have made solid starts in their careers domestically and overseas: Holly Humberstone, Olivia Dean, Maisie Peters, Cat Burns and FLO to name a few. With malleable genres disrupting the pure “pop” tag, indie artists like Rachel Chinouriri, Wet Leg and The Last Dinner Party could all scale up rapidly on the international stage.

Perhaps 2024 will act as something of a recalibration for success in the pop world and beyond. There’s no denying that the U.K. has the right talent to succeed, it’s now a question of how to make the world hear it.

It looks like Sabrina Carpenter’s reign on the Official U.K. Singles Chart with “Please Please Please” isn’t ending anytime soon.
Projections indicate she’ll hold the No. 1 spot for a fourth consecutive week. Meanwhile, her former chart-topper “Espresso” remains steady at No. 2 in the midweek update.

But watch out Sabrina — Shaboozey is shaking things up! His single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – which famously interpolates J-Kwon’s 2004 smash “Tipsy” – is currently just over 1,000 chart units behind Carpenter, sitting pretty at No. 3.

Meanwhile, British breakout star Myles Smith is aiming high with his track “Stargazing.” The single is set to leap two spots to No. 4, marking his highest chart position to date. Smith first appeared on the Official U.K. Singles Chart with his 2024 single “Solo,” which peaked at No. 69. His debut EP, You Promised A Lifetime, reached No. 30 on the Official Albums Downloads Chart.

Following their show-stopping headline slot at Glastonbury Festival, Coldplay’s latest track “feelslikeimfallinginlove” is on a sky-high trajectory, projected to reach a new peak in the top 20, landing at No. 12.

Meanwhile, Shady’s back (back again), as Eminem returns with his new track “Tobey” featuring Big Sean and Babytron, from his forthcoming album The Death of Slim Shady. “Tobey” is climbing a whopping 59 places to No. 17.

It follows the success of Eminem’s previous single “Houdini,” which marked his 11th U.K. No. 1 single in June 2024.

“Houdini” was the Detroit rapper’s first fully solo No. 1 since “Toy Soldiers” in 2005 and his first U.K. chart-topper since 2020’s “Godzilla,” featuring Juice WRLD.

Sabrina Carpenter is in the midst of a major battle, and her fiercest competitor is none other than herself.
As the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart reaches its midweek point, Carpenter’s smash hit “Espresso” remains piping hot and is neck-and-neck with “Please Please Please” (both via Island Records) as both singles vie for the coveted No. 1 spot.

“Espresso” debuted straight in at No. 6 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart upon its release, and on May 3, 2024, it became Carpenter’s very first U.K. leader. It also marked the highest-charting U.K. No. 1 about caffeine in 24 years, since All Saints’ 2000 hit “Black Coffee.”

Meanwhile “Please Please Please,” the second single from Carpenter’s sixth studio album Short ‘n’ Sweet, toppled Eminem‘s “Houdini” back in late June to secure Sabrina her second U.K. No. 1 single in less than two months, while “Espresso” stayed at No. 2. In doing so, Sabrina set a new Official Chart record, becoming the youngest female artist in history to hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Official Singles Chart in the same week.

In other U.K. singles chart news, rising star Chappell Roan is also making waves. Her catchy and heartfelt single “Good Luck, Babe!” (via Island) is poised to hit a new peak at No. 4, up from its debut in the top 10 last week.

Based on midweek sales and streaming data published by the Official Charts Company, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” (via EMI) is expected to re-enter the top 10 at No. 10, riding the wave of excitement from her The Eras Tour. Swift’s ability to keep her music relevant and engaging is once again on full display, as fans continue to support her timeless hits.

Dua Lipa, fresh off her headline performance at Glastonbury Festival, is seeing her track “Illusion” (via Warner Records) re-enter the top 20, currently at No. 13. The festival’s influence is also boosting Coldplay, with their new song “feelslikeimfallinginlove” (via Atlantic) set to reach a new peak at No. 21. Both acts have clearly benefited from their standout performances, drawing renewed attention to their latest releases.

BTS icon Jimin is aiming for his third top 40 U.K. single with “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” (via Big Hit Music) featuring rapper Loco, with the track projected to land at No. 18. Inspired by The Beatles‘ iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the K-Pop star’s latest solo effort sees him once again collaborate with renowned producers Pdogg, GHSTLOOP, and EVAN, who previously worked on his debut solo album, FACE.

Stay tuned for the final chart results at the end of the week to see which tracks secure their positions.
