Elton John’s Farewell Tour Is Now Third Biggest in History With $661M Gross … and Growing

Way back in 2018, Elton John launched the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, billed as his final, three-year-long global trek. The announcement of his final shows has paid dividends, generating more than half a billion dollars while he plays to more than four million fans. So far, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour has grossed $661.3 million and sold 4.5 million tickets across 257 shows around the world through Oct. 9.

John has been banking millions since the tour began, but stepped on the gas after returning from a two-year COVID-19 delay. After playing 39 North American arena dates in the spring, he flew to Europe for a 19-date stadium run, and then came back stateside for more than 30 domestic stadium shows. Of those, 20 have played so far, adding $133.4 million and 830,000 tickets to the tour’s sum.

From one North American leg to another, attendance jumped by 192% to 41,513 per show, and nightly revenue increased by 160% to $6.7 million.

The 39 stadium shows that have played so far in Europe and North America have earned $202.6 million and sold 1.3 million tickets, making up 31% and 30%, respectively, of the tour’s total figures, despite accounting for just 15% of its shows.

In getting to this point, John’s goodbye run is the third tour in Boxscore history to pass the $600 million threshold, following U2’s 360 Tour, which grossed $736.4 million in 2009-11, and Ed Sheeran’s reigning champ, The Divide Tour, which earned $776.4 million from 2017 to 2019.

Sheeran’s all-time champ is an interesting comparison point, with 258 shows throughout its two-and-a-half-year run – just one more than John’s tour has played so far. In contrast to Sheeran and U2, as well as other $500 million tours by Guns ‘N Roses, The Rolling Stones and Coldplay, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour has spent most of its time in arenas. While these classic rock greats made their sums quickly in 50,000-plus-capacity stadiums, John has been a road horse in 15,000-cap arenas, able to push high ticket prices in a relatively intimate setting.

The current North American leg continues with 13 more shows before its Nov. 20 close at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium. John continues with a 10-stadium run in Australia and New Zealand in January, plus a return to European arenas with more than 40 shows in the spring. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour is scheduled to close at Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena on July 8, 2023, and with just $115 million between him and the all-time record, John soldiers on at breakneck speed.

Across his career, John has grossed $1.7 billion and sold 19.1 million tickets, becoming the highest grossing solo act in Billboard Boxscore’s three-decade-plus history.

Is HYBE Ready for the Challenge of BTS’ Military Service?

For months, South Korean politicians have been scrambling to find a solution to the forced breakup of BTS, the biggest cultural export their country has known over the last several decades.

On Monday (Oct. 17), the boy band’s label Big Hit Music, a subsidiary of HYBE, appeared to put an end to the handwringing, saying that each of the BTS members would, in fact, serve their mandatory military service. That means, before long — Jin turns 30 in December — the group will not be able to perform with its full seven-member lineup until 2025.

While the timing will vary for the members — Jin, RM, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook — based on their age, the departures will create yet another challenge for Seoul-based HYBE. The company, which went public on the South Korean Stock Exchange in October of 2020, has been working to diversify its roster and silence financial analysts who said the company had the look of a one-hit wonder with BTS, the act that has landed six No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

HYBE had already been dealing with the stress put on the company by the act’s joint announcement in June that it was taking an undetermined break from group activities to pursue solo projects. But no amount of lobbying by politicians or HYBE itself has helped BTS avoid the responsibilities that all able-bodied South Korean males from 18 to 28 have to serve at least 18 months in the military, though the length of service may vary. In December of 2020, the South Korean National Assembly passed the so-called “BTS law” to allow K-pop entertainers to postpone required service until the age of 30 with a recommendation from the culture minister.

For now, the market seems to have priced in the reality that either through military service or their own desire to work on their solo careers, this version of BTS would not be able to stay together for much longer.

HYBE’s stock, traded on South Korea’s stock exchange, fell 2.54% to 115,000 won ($80.40) on Monday, with other K-pop companies’ stocks staying within 1% of their Friday closing price.

Mandatory military service issue has been a divisive issue in South Korea in recent years as K-pop’s popularity has grown worldwide. While many, including some lawmakers, say the musicians’ contribution to the country’s global recognition should qualify them for an exemption, others that include the defense ministry have opposed the move.

In a country that has superpower neighbors such as China and Russia, as well as a saber-rattling North Korea, many South Koreans believe that the military requirement serves as a social equalizer. And attempts to avoid mandatory service have suspended or derailed the careers of several entertainers and other public figures. Boy bands such as 2 PM and Bigbang have significantly limited their public appearances or paused group activities after its members entered the military.

Jin, the group’s eldest member, turns 30 in December and is expected to start his military service by the end of the year if no sudden amendments are made to the country’s compulsory draft legislation. Jungkook, the youngest member, is 25 years old.

For HYBE, the big question remains: Has the company done enough to diversify its artist roster to account for a potential drop in revenues from a less-active BTS. Since acquiring Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in April 2021, the share of HYBE’s revenue BTS accounts for, which was 85% in 2020, has fallen to about 60% in 2021, according to one analyst estimate.

Bernie Cho, owner of Seoul-based DFSB Kollective artists and label services agency, says HYBE “has silenced naysayers by rolling out a deep K-pop artists roster that goes beyond BTS,” including new acts Seventeen, TXT and ENHYPEN. Combined, the three groups, which debuted in 2021, accounted for 7.7 million album unit sales — more than half of HYBE’s 2021 total K-pop album sales worldwide, according to company filings. And this year, two girl bands – Le Sserafim and NewJeans – have joined their male labelmates as “some of the best-selling artists of the year,” Cho says.

Nevertheless, earlier this month, NH Investment & Securities, one of South Korea’s largest securities firms, lowered its target stock price for HYBE by 19% to 250,000 won ($177) citing a “delay in growth even after acquiring Ithaca Holdings.”

BTS fuels tremendous merchandise sales in Korea, along with physical CDs and is essentially the flagship act for a growing global K-pop industry. Attention around BTS helps generate some $3.54 billion in visits from foreigners and exports of consumer goods like clothes, makeup and food, according to the Hyundai Research Institute. One Korean politician, Sung-Il-jong of the ruling People Power Party, has estimated that a No. 1 song on the Billboard charts can create a halo effect that generates an economic boom of $1.38 billion for the South Korean economy.

Twelve full months of revenue from HYBE America — which houses artist management and Big Machine Label Group, which manages top international acts like Justin Bieber — are expected to further strengthen HYBE’s income statement.

The company also will try to cobble together BTS-like sales and streams from BTS solo projects. In July, J-Hope was the first to release solo material with the album Jack in the Box, which featured singles “MORE” and “Arson.”

The members, for their part, seem to want to try to stay together as BTS. At a special free concert on Saturday in Busan, South Korea, where 55,000 fans attended, Jin teased a solo project as the members pledged to carry on group activities well into their careers. “We will continue for 30 years,” Jimin said, “and even perform when we are 70 years old.”

But it was J-Hope, the first to open up about the group’s future, who seemed to signal that military service was looming — and that the group could be entering a challenging period. “I think we’re in a phase where we need your trust,” he said.

DaBaby Discovers Daughter Playing Bizarre Video Game Featuring Himself: ‘Somebody Owe Me Money’

DaBaby has learned that he’s a playable character in a video game, and he wants to know why he hasn’t been paid for it.

The Charlottesville rapper heard his signature “Let’s go” adlib emanating from his daughter’s iPad, and saw she was playing a bizarre tablet game involving DaBaby’s head as a car trying to dodge oncoming traffic.

“Look at what my daughter’s end up playing man,” Baby said in an Instagram post. “Go head though. Who the fuck made this game? And where I get my money at? This game got my head as a car, it got my head from the side as a car. It’s like this with some wheels on it.”

He reaffirmed in the caption, “Somebody owe me some money bruh.”

DaBaby could use the money judging by his string of bad luck recently. In September, the rapper’s show in New Orleans was reportedly canceled after selling less than 500 tickets, though the rapper’s team denied this.

“DaBaby’s New Orleans show was pulled by the artist’s team due to the promoter being in breach of contract,” said DaBaby’s booking agent Andrew Lieber. “DaBaby will be back in New Orleans very soon to make it up to his fans.”

The “BOP” rapper also had a rough rollout of his latest album, which he blamed on being “blackballed” from the industry.

DaBaby Accused Of Ripping Off Another Artist’s Track: ‘You’re Stealing From Women’

The surprise release of Baby On Baby 2 on September 23 moved only 16,000 units in its first week. By contrast, Baby’s previous solo project, 2020’s BLAME IT ON BABY, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and moved 124,000 album-equivalent units, per Billboard. Still, DaBaby wasn’t sweating the tepid projections and gave himself a pat on the back for his sales.

“No bad for da BlackBalled Baby,” the rapper wrote on his Instagram Stories.

Regardless of how the album commercially performed, DaBaby will soon be hitting the road for his fall Baby On Baby 2 Tour, which kicks off on Oct. 27 in Minneapolis. From there, the “BOP” rapper will head to Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, New York, Boston, and others before wrapping in Los Angeles, California on November 19.

Miami made the announcement official with a social media post on Monday (October 17). Caresha will be playing the role of Deanna Washington in Season 2.

“MEET DEANNA SEASON 2 #BMF Season 2 this January on Starz @bmfstarz,” she excitedly wrote to Twitter.

Season 2 will hit STARZ at the top of 2023 with a premiere set for January. Look for plenty of celebrity cameos this season as Snoop Dogg, Mo’Nique and Leslie Jones will be making appearances in addition to Yung Miami.

This isn’t to be confused with the documentary 50 Cent is executive producing about the infamous crime family that is also coming to STARZ later this month. The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast will premiere on October 23.

“The docuseries will offer an inside look at different perspectives from all of those involved, BMF — Blowing Money Fast,” 50 said in a statement at the time.

Yung Miami doesn’t boast much acting experience in Hollywood. However, she does serve as an executive producer on Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t as the HBO show was partially inspired by the City Girls’ rise to fame.

Photos of the Month: October 2022

With fall and spooky season in full swing, October has been filled to the brim with highly anticipated concerts and awards shows.

Just a day after Blink-182 announced a reunion with former singer-guitarist Tom DeLonge for a 2023 global tour and new music, singer-bassist Mark Hoppus was seen chucking up the deuces at Ball Arena for the Denver Avalanche vs. Chicago Blackhawks game.

It was a month of throwbacks for rock fans in general, as Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance took over the Kia Forum in Los Angeles for their own respective concerts. Marcus Mumford also headed out on tour in support of his debut solo album, and took over the Ventura Theater on Oct. 4 in Ventura, Calif.

October was also a month of fashion, as members of K-pop groups SEVENTEEN and Girls’ Generation dressed to the nines while attending the ‘AMI’ 23 SS collection show in Seoul, South Korea. Meanwhile Renjun, Jeno, Jisung, Jaemin and Chenle of NCT Dream attended the 2022 The Fact Music Awards.

Over on the theater side, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of Hamilton headed over to Hamburg, Germany, on Oct. 6 to celebrate the wildly popular production’s German premiere at Stage Operettenhaus. In one of the sweetest photos from the month, Miranda is seen walking onstage to take his bow at the end of the performance, with a hand on his heart and a grateful look on his face.

Jack Harlow Set To Host & Perform On Next Episode Of Saturday Night Live

Jack Harlow will join an exclusive list of people after announcing he would be the latest guest to host and perform on Saturday Night Live.

The legendary sketch comedy show made the announcement on its Twitter page with a post showing his name on two different Post-it notes. Harlow will be stopping by the show to handle hosting and performing duties on October 29.

“JACK HARLOW JACK HARLOW,” read the caption of the tweet.

This will be the second time Jack Harlow visits Saturday Night Live, as he played a school janitor alongside comedian Pete Davidson in an NFT-rap sketch. Jack Harlow already has experience with hosting, too, as he shared the spotlight alongside Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show a few weeks ago.

The Louisville native’s double-duty appearance will also be the first time SNL will have two people host and perform on consecutive weekends. Megan Thee Stallion took over the show this past weekend where she appeared in six different skits and delivered performances for “NDA” and “Plan B.”

However, her rendition of “Anxiety” saw her fighting back the tears as she performed the personal song with a lot of emotion. The whole performance had Megan looking serious throughout until the tears started to flow when she began rapping the second verse — which finds her imagining writing a letter to her mother, who passed away in 2019.

She briefly regained her composure but got emotional once again towards the end of the performance.

Jack Harlow, on the other hand, has been having a hell of a year. In August, the “WHAT’S POPPIN” rapper was the biggest winner at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on August 28.

Harlow took home four “Moonman” trophies, more than any other artist this year. “First Class” won Song of the Summer, while his “Industry Baby” collaboration with Lil Nas X grabbed three awards for Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.

The 24-year-old was nominated in four other categories, including Artist of the Year, Best Choreography and the coveted Video of the Year.

Lil Baby Denies Rumors He Paid $16K For Sex With A Porn Star

Lil Baby cleared the air during his early morning visit to The Breakfast Club regarding rumors that he paid $16,000 to have sex with a porn star.

The Atlanta rapper wasted no time denying the rumors as DJ Envy asked him about coughing up $16,000 just for an intimate moment with someone. According to Lil Baby, the rumors couldn’t be any further from the truth.

“Man that is so untrue,” Lil Baby said after Envy asked him the question. “So untrue. I never paid anybody $16,000 to do nothing. Ever.”

Envy asked where the rumor came from, to which Baby said it had to come from the pornstar because it wasn’t from him or anyone on his team. Charlamagne then asked him if he tricks with his women and he admitted he does but not for an insane $16,000.

“I ain’t doing that, I’m not taking you shopping, I’m not one of those types of guys,” Lil Baby said. “I pay you to leave.”

The Breakfast Club erupted in laughter before Charlamagne asked Lil Baby what’s the largest amount he’s paid a woman to leave and he explained only “a couple thousand.”

“They know where I gotta go and how quick I need you to leave,” he added.

The rumors of Lil Baby’s alleged $16,000 sexcapade started when adult film actress Ms. London shared a post on Twitter allegedly exposing Baby for paying her the large amount just for a one-night stand.

“I’m legit about to talk shit all night,” Ms. London began in a drunken rant. “The best dick I ever had came from a millionaire who didn’t say more than two full sentences to me. He literally beat me to the mattress soon as I got in the room. Not dropping no names, but Jayda not leaving this man ever.”

She continued to say she was incredibly drunk and shouldn’t have revealed their agreement, but was very complimentary of Baby’s sex game even though there wouldn’t be a second time. Ms. London also hinted she had footage of her tryst with Baby she’d be willing to post.

Things got even more interesting when the porn star exposed a DM from Baby who said, “What’s the point of paying if you do all that!! You fuccin the game up!! If I pay for pussy youn to speak on it. That’s bad business mama.”

Baby went into full damage control mode shortly after that to call cap on Ms. London in a series of his own deleted tweets.

“Like huh? WTF be wrong with y’all people,” he wrote. “I get it !! Say Baby’s name and get clout. Y’all need to stop the desperate shit.”

The Grammy-nominated rapper continued to deny Ms. London’s claims, “Jayda been wit me my whole bday including Vegas y’all be on bs.”

The allegations seemed to still bother Baby as he took to Twitter shortly after to continue speaking his truth regarding the sexual rendezvous with the porn star. The My Turn rapper tweeted, and then deleted, that he would never pay for a night with any woman and then seemingly admitted he did have sex with London.

“An ill never give a hoe 16k to fucc,” Baby tweeted initially.

Minutes later he came back with a questionable post that read, “I’m wrong for giving the inch fasho but bitches be taking a inch an stretch that shit for miles!”

Lil Baby Seemingly Responds To Quavo’s Saweetie Cheating Claim

“Niggas fucc up fasho but who go harder for they girl then me ? Stop playing with me,” he added with a third tweet.

Sam Smith & Kim Petras’ ‘Unholy’ Tops Billboard Global Charts for Third Week

Sam Smith and Kim Petras‘ “Unholy” posts a third week at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, two weeks after it launched at the summit of both surveys.

The two charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Billboard Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the U.S.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Unholy’ Atop Global 200 for Third Week

Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” claims a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, with 81.5 million streams (down 2%) and 18,000 downloads sold worldwide (up 9%) in the Oct. 7-13 tracking week.

Notably, songs by acts all from outside the U.S. have topped the Global 200 for 34 consecutive weeks, spanning seven titles (and five countries), both record streaks since the chart began. Here’s a recap:

“Heat Waves,” Glass Animals (U.K.), six weeks at No. 1, beginning March 5
“As It Was,” Harry Styles (U.K.), 15, April 16
“Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” Kate Bush (U.K.), three, June 18
“Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 52,” Bizarrap (Argentina) & Quevedo (Spain), four, July 30
“Pink Venom,” BLACKPINK (South Korea), two, Sept. 3
“Shut Down,” BLACKPINK (South Korea), one, Oct. 1
“Unholy,” Sam Smith (UK) & Kim Petras (Germany), three to-date, Oct. 8

The Global 200’s top five holds in place, with David Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s “I’m Good (Blue)” at its No. 2 high; Harry Styles’ “As It Was” at No. 3 following its record 15-week reign; Chris Brown’s “Under the Influence” at its No. 4 best; and OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried” at its No. 5 highpoint.

Elsewhere in the Global 200’s top 10, Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit” rebounds to its No. 10 best, from No. 12, up 3% to 37.6 million streams worldwide. It previously spent a week in the region on the Aug. 27 chart.

Smith, Petras Continue Atop Global Excl. U.S.

Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” concurrently logs a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, with 59.3 million streams (down 2%) and 6,000 downloads sold (up 8%) worldwide in territories outside the U.S. in the Oct. 7-13 tracking week.

Similar to the Global 200, songs by acts from outside the U.S. have dominated the Global Excl. U.S. chart for 32 weeks in a row, covering nine titles (and six countries), likewise record streaks:

“Heat Waves,” Glass Animals (U.K.), three weeks at No. 1, beginning March 19

The Global Excl. U.S. top five is stationary, with David Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s “I’m Good (Blue)” at its No. 2 best; Manuel Turizo’s “La Bachata” at its No. 3 high; Harry Styles’ “As It Was” at No. 4 following its record 13-week rule; and Bizarrap and Quevedo’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 52” at No. 5, after it reigned for six weeks.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Oct. 22, 2022) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Oct. 18). Watch Kelly Clarkson & Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Honor Loretta Lynn With a Duet

Kelly Clarkson kicked off a new week of The Kelly Clarkson Show with a very special Kellyoke featuring Dwayne Johnson! The twosome opened the Monday (Oct. 17) daytime talk show by duetting on Loretta Lynn‘s 1967 classic “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’.”

“An extra special #Kellyoke duet with Dwayne @therock Johnson in memory of the late, great @LorettaLynn,” the show’s Twitter account announced that morning.

“No, don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind/ Just stay out there, on the town and see what you can find/ ‘Cause if you want that kind of love, well, you don’t need none of mine/ So don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind,” the pair sing in unison over the song’s honky-tonk instrumentation. (During the performance, Clarkson also rebuffed a playful kiss from the movie star as she sang, “You come in, kissin’ on me/ It happens every time.”)

Released off the late country icon’s ninth solo studio album, “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’” earned the Coal Miner’s Daughter her very first No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, a feat she would replicate 15 more times throughout her accomplished career. It was later recorded by Tammy Wynette on her 1967 album Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad, and also covered by Gretchen Wilson on the 2010 LP Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn.

Johnson may be known for his acting, but he also notched his own Billboard Hot 100 entry back in 2016 when “You’re Welcome” from Disney’s Moana debuted at No. 83 on the all-genre chart.

Last week, Clarkson also welcomed Sam Smith to join her for a Kellyoke duet of her own 2004 smash “Breakaway” before covering Olivia Rodrigo’s “Traitor,” “Whitney Houston’s “Queen of the Night” and Alec Benjamin’s “Let Me Down Slowly” featuring Alessia Cara over her next four shows.

Watch Clarkson and Johnson pay tribute to Lynn below.
